Title: Gaslamp RTD - OOC/Q&A
Post by: S.K. Ren on August 05, 2011, 00:44
A while back I picked up on a RP system called Roll to Dodge. The rules are pretty fast and loose allowing for more focus on RP and less on stats, but still subject to whims of the Random Number God. Basic rules are as follows

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With that out of the way, back to the main topic. Is anyone interested in playing this? I can make any setting you want and will work to make a decent scenario if people show interest. If you are interested, please post your desired setting as well as your vote of interest. If no majority is reached I will pick one at random from generic settings to make a scenario from. I will be using a 3d6 table for anyone concerned by the small 1d6 range.

Sounds interesting enough to try, and I don't have to cough up some complicated character.

Count me in!

Good to hear. I would like at least two more people. Also I need a vote between these 5 themes for the RTD:
If you have a request for an already existing world setting I can take that into consideration as most fit into one of these 5 catagories.

I have fond memories of RTD, although the system I used was a little more elaborate...

Count me in. I vote for whatever everyone else votes for.

Can I be in? I vote for Dark Fantasy.

Count me in. Basically, anything goes, but mostly Dark Fantasy or Steampunk.

Gaslamp or Steampunk for me.

Girl Genius is a great inspiration.

So we have thelaptop, Silhar, Angles, The Page and my brother irl. The votes were 2 Dark Fantasy, 2 Gaslamp and 2 Steampunk. A d3 chose Gaslamp so i'll kill myself tonight to get a proper scenario together. Is there any Gaslamp Fantasy out there other than Girl Genius?

@The Page: We'll I just gave the streamlined version. I support earning skills through repeated actions or luck or whimsy... I just didn't want to scare people off. I also support equipment but in the end its all abstract. A Shotgun will do the same damage as a Sniper rifle on a hit, it's the chance to hit that may vary from weapon to weapon skill. Anyways I'll post the scenario in it's own thread along with what I'll require for a character (Mostly a name, basic description and a preferred specialty. Ill try to assign you basic skills close to what you pick.)

Huzzah, gaslamp.

I'm sure there's plenty gaslamp other than Girl Genius, but you could always just think "Sherlock Holmes with fantascience and magick" and you'll do fine.

Sorry for the delay. I'm currently visiting my cousin and got dragged to a hookah bar lat night. I have schoolwork to finish today as well so I'll either post tonight or tomorrow night, no later.

Don't worry, PBFs here take a while to move anyway.

Take your time and do an awesome job.  =P

Sorry for confusion...

Main post is up and in the future I'd like all OOC questions to be asked here to avoid cluttering the main thread.

Q: I have a question. Do we pick any starting equipment?

A:It'll be random. You'll need to search your surroundings/stash and see what the dice give you. Ill base whatever you find around your skill. And besides even if you get a botched roll you still have your fists and can loot the guards. As you find stuff Ill make an armory spoiler on the first page. Ill also be keeping a character sheet summary at the bottom of each round's report and use the abbr tag to give a short description.

Sure, just be able to post regularly. You can start now. The requirements are in the main thread.

Is talking a free action (at least if it's short enough to actually be said during the primary action)? Does it have to be tacked onto the primary action with italics?

A: No, you don't need to italicize talking at all. But if you talk while performing an athletic or acrobatic action, I will penalize you cause you cant talk and breath at the same time and those action demand breathing.

Also I've decided to move on without The Page or Angles of Death. You guys can PM me your characters and Ill introduce them the round after I get them.

Could you give us the results table for 2d8? Maybe also add it to the rules spoiler in the main thread?

A: I had though of it but decided not to for two reasons. The first being I didn't want to make this a game so much as an RP with background mechanics. I want you guys to focus more on playing your character and not worrying about aiming for specific numbers. The second is that the tables changes based on the situation. Really all you need to know is that 2 is the worst, 16 is the best and 8-9  is an average success and this is covered in the rules section in the main post.

Your example for a d6 said that a 6 would be "over exertion" and in the case of say, shooting, would result in a grazing hit. I assumed that the highest numbers were worse than an average or above average number.

Look, if you're doing a really simple action and have bonuses up the wazoo and get a 16, Ill tack on a slight negative repercussion. For more normal actions you dont need to worry about it. Over exertion isn't strictly a bad thing but it just isn't as good as a normal success. Also the rules in this thread were just to give a rough idea about how RTDs generally work since no one seemed to have experience with them here. The rules in the main thread are the ones we are using for the game.

Question: What do your colour codes mean, and how do we know which guard we are entangled with at the moment?  Specifically, did I crush the guard that I landed on in a heap?

A:
White = Unwounded
Green = Barely wounded
Lime Green = Light Wounds
Yellow = Moderate wounds
Orange = Heavy wounds
Red = Critical wounds
Black = Dead or will be imminently

Also I'll use abbr to add notes to the NPCs and players. You should be able to highlight one of the guards and see "Restrained" pop up.

Also, for further clarification. If you roll a failure on your roll I may simply omit the result of your action or have you take a non-action if the failure is inconsequential. If you don't see your action resolved it probably means you failed the roll,

Point of information: You keep spelling "Twizmer" as "Twismer".  =P

Tis fine. Truth be told, no one else has bothered to remind me to post so I'll take that as a lack of interest. It was my first time actively DMing something and while I had plans for how to shape this, Ill just take it as experience for whatever I try to do next.

Hmm, no fair.  I kept asking you on IRC who's up next?

When? I mean, recently when? Cause if I missed the messages, my bad. But let me ask, did you just type them in chat and get no response or did you pm me and they just didn't come through? It doesn't help that my router died recently so everyone in the house is sharing the internet connection, limiting my access till we get a new one.

Also I may reboot this at a later date when I have a lot more preparation under my belt. I will do a conclusion of sorts to this little adventure... eventually, but for now I'm in no condition to keep up with it.

I'll think about it... I still need a bit more preparation before I do though.
