Bug Reports / [0.9.9.1] Multiple Gothic Boots = Immobilized
« on: March 26, 2010, 22:09 »
I'm using the Linux version of DoomRL 0.9.9.1, running on Debian Lenny 5.0 in an Xterm window.
I had the (good?) fortune to run across two gothic boots. I was wearing my current set because the new ones were on the other side of some lava. My inventory was full, so I dropped my other boots on a square next to the new gothic boots. I picked up the new ones and equipped them, replacing my old ones. This triggered the "Suddenly you feel immobilized. You feel like a fortress!" message that is supposed to happen when you equip gothic boots and gothic armor at the same time. And then I got stuck.
I'm not allowed to move. Switching between the two pairs of boots triggers the "Suddenly you feel immobilized!" message. If I drop a pair and unequip the other pair, I still can't move. If I unequip my armor (blue, bulk modded), I'm still stuck. Unequipping my weapons also does nothing.

Seems to run fine on my EeePC 701 running Debian, though it says something about an access violation every time I exit. I'll test it out more thoroughly later.

A fairly basic Ammochain run which became awesome. First time clearing out The Mortuary on HNTR too, though I managed to clear it back in 0.9.8.5 on ITYTD. Spamming about a dozen BFG shots is a good solution to most problems. Vile packs were no problem. I'd say this was my best run ever. I think it's the only time I've reached character level 11.I got a lot of mods, enough so that sinking another point into Whizkid was more than worthwhile. Yes, those are 3 Agility mods on my plasma rifle. Yes, I was able to accurately spam 8 shots of d8+3 plasma whenever I wanted to. Yes, it kicked a lot of ass. It's probably my favorite weapon I've ever had. I should probably give it a name. Um, Michal.

0.9.9.1 / Re: [M|AoPc|8%|YAVP] RUN RUN RUN
« on: March 16, 2010, 03:11 »
Surprisingly, not all that hard. If you've got two ranks in Hellrunner and Dodgemaster and you start running you're pretty much uncatchable, though a lost soul might bite you now and then. Use a medkit if you get tired and just breeze right past all the enemies. Fireballs can't hit you and the teleporter out is straight through the middle.

This was my second try at AoPc, the first try ended with me getting stuck in an alley between an imp and a lost soul. I got pretty lucky in some aspects. A lot of convenient stairs (as you can see by my time), plenty of medkits, mods, and armor (I love my agility modded red armor), but very few phase devices. I don't think I found a single homing phase device. This was a lot of fun, the blind rush through levels looking for the stairs was exhilarating. Also, running with Hellrunner seems to make you too fast to be seen. A few times I ran next to a couple of monsters (revenants) and then back out of their line of sight without them firing at me. I also managed to catch a rocket right before the nuke went off, making the ending text more awesome. A+, would play again.
If you're curious where I got the name, it's from this video. :)

Glad to see you liked the medkit sound effect I found.
The small changes to the game make it even better; all I need to do now is figure out how to beat it. :P Probably has something to do with using more grenades.

I don't think drum 'n' bass will fit the sci-fi theme Kornel's got going with it. Sure, drum 'n' bass goes with almost everything, but not everyone agrees.
I saw this site a few months ago, bookmarked it in case it would be helpful.
The Recordist - Sound Effects For Games
It's got a bunch of sci-fi sound effects that you might be able to use.

Requests For Features / "Classic Mode" - premade map challenge
« on: March 04, 2007, 12:15 »
This is an idea I got one night. What if, instead of randomly generating levels like in a Roguelike, there was the option to play a premade series of maps like in the original Doom? I know that somebody was working on ASCII maps of Doom E1, and my idea is like that.
There would be maps, like the special levels, which would always be the same no matter how many times you play them. If you die, you can restart the level with the same items, health and stats you had when you entered the level.
To balance this, traits would either be disabled or less effective, you can only hold a certain amount of ammo (but you can hold more if you get the backpack! :P), items would be activated/used as soon as you pick them up (a la AoI) and no unique/improved (extended, advanced) items.
Scores would be determined at the end of each level based on percentages of par turns, enemies killed and secrets found.
This would probably make DoomRL more Doomish than RLish, but I think it might be fun to try. The ability to load in new user-made levels would also be a must if this is implemented. Y'know, like if you just get an urge to play the Chained Court but don't want to go through several other levels to get to it.
This might significantly increase the download size, but I don't think it would be too hard to use, since DoomRL already has the special levels in their own files.

Pre-0.9.9 / [E|86%|26] I am a lucky SOB.
« on: February 21, 2007, 14:29 »
Some of you in the IRC channel may have noticed me making several comments about my game, usually about how many BFGs I had (4, 3 normal and 1 advanced) or how many invulnerability globes were near the stairs. Anyway, after getting an invulnerability globe right before going to The Wall, having Intuition 3 when facing the Mortuary, and getting 2 invulnerability globes before facing the Cyberdemon (and having a thermonuclear bomb, too :D), I got to the final boss. Sadly, even 4 overcharged BFG shots were not enough. Next time, no overcharging.
Technically this was a win, but I still died on level 26.
Looking at my inventory, I didn't do too good of a job. I get distracted easily. :P
This was a lot of fun. I can't wait for the next version.

If you're not allowed to use the files based on Doom, you could look to the Freedoom project for inspiration. That was a project to allow people to be able to use a Doom source port without having the original pwad file.
Anyway, I agree with people who say id software shouldn't be too upset about DoomRL. Playing DoomRL is not going to keep me from buying any of their products, since it is a fan game. Remember Doom 2D?

Just allow a .ini option for autosaving, set to off by default. It seems to be the easiest to implement, and it will allow people to quit levels quickly if they need to.
But AI which builds civilizations would be good too. Maybe have them starting to construct a city of hell on some levels... :P

I like the idea of making the tutorial a prequel after you complete it.
Make sure the tutorial explains some of the lesser known functions, like Unloading weapons and using the "Prepared" equipment slot.

Strange... I've beaten The Wall twice on Too Young To Die. It's just a matter of breaking through at the top, then taking out whatever enters your field of vision. It's easier than in other modes, since there are no Barons of Hell, just Hell Knights.
It's probably easier if you have points in Reloader.
