Pre-0.9.9 / [H|98%|YASD] Good new version - the Vaults're nice :)

As you can see, I died in the center vault, making an otherwise shameful defeat bittersweet - this was my first time in the vaults, and my second game for this version (the first ended terribly, somewhere at the beginning).
Before the vaults, the game was going perfectly smooth, with very few tight spots. But that wasn't much of a challenge, really - I lucked out on some of the best equipment around.
It says I found Necroarmor on dlvl5, but actually I found it in the Chained Court, much to my surprise and childlike cheers :) It made the next few levels amusingly easy. But I wonder - when the self-repair (and the damage thus caused) factors in, is it really much better than red armor with a protection mod? There's the speed bonus, but still...
Trigun was found later. My only question about this one is "does it benefit from SoaG?". If so, well... Heh... Heheheh... Mmmm...
Blaster I found even later. Looks like the perfect sidearm, but with Trigun I never really had a use for it.

My guess is that Mancubi "suffer" from the same bug that grants rockets double-damage on a direct hit. I'm quite certain I had more than 60%, and dare I say even 70%, health before I was shot down. The main lesson here's not to stand near walls when fighting mancubi :) but I still find their incredible damage potential to be quite unfair - especially considering that the new maze levels sometimes make being hit by them while up against a wall unavoidable.
My 29-bullet clip-size made battle rather interesting. With mods it was obviously superior to a chaingun, with a magazine over half the size of a CGs, firing 10 controlled rounds per 1000 energy, reloading fast and causing more damage, and with what seemed to be higher accuracy. Things would have been even worse, if I would have found Hell's Armory, which I suspect I missed. I mean, all this but with ~2d10 damage...? Heh... :P

At long last! :)
I got this one the day before yesterday, or so.
With only 6 AVs throughout the entire game, this one was rather easy for the difflvl. But a victory's a victory never the less, and I'm quite pleased with myself :)
This is only the second time I did the CoS, and with a PD working well, it was quite a breeze. It was also the source of my BFG, after terrible luck led to my not breaking down the HoC vault door without taking the BFG with it. The 6 rockets around it, however, survived just fine, to my slight annoyance :P
Spider's Lair went very well, with invulnerability and berserk globes taken just before I entered. I actually wanted to nuke the Lair, and see if there's a Mastermind hidden somewhere beneath, but sadly had no nuke. I blasted them down with my steroid-pumped Rocket Launcher, knocking back, badly wounding and outright killing most of them before the warmup period ended.
Taking on the Cyberdemon I've discovered that BFGs can, without much of a doubt, miss. Not a very pleasant discovery, but not enough to save Cybie. In fact, I was much more troubled by the fact that when I tried waiting for him to enter my LOS (instead of marching into his and being shot at), he both moved and fired at me on my one waiting turn! This happened a few times, afterwhich I gave up on seeing him and just took blind shots with said BFG. I would have gladly nuked the bastard for an attempt at a full win, instead of gunning him down, but, contrary to my other games, I had invulnerbility but no nuke.
I got this one the day before yesterday, or so.

Bug Reports / Save crash in an acid-flooded room

DoomRL v0.9.8.7
Win2000
-room was flooded with acid (lever)
-attempted to save on stairs
-the stairs were right above a door, i.e. on the very side of the room and right over to a door.
The door was to the right of the stairs.
-game crashed
I have a screenshot of the crash frame, but it's a 615k BMP, which of course can't load... If the site accepts JPGs or something, I'll change it, just let me know.
-upon accessing DoomRL again, it said there's a save to continue from, normally, but it didn't work and I deleted it. It gave some more information when I tried loading; I'll post it later.

I mentioned this game earlier somewhere, and here it is.
I think it's a good idea to add a line to the mortem where it says how much health you had before the shot that killed you. It could have made this mortem a lot less embarassing. I was in good shape, and everything was going great, 'till this Baron takes me out with a RL - which I had no idea he had. I would have otherwise healed, with any of my many medkits, from the ~50% health I had (which is normally enough to take 2-3 additional hits from a Baron, especially considering the red armor I had, as the last messages show).
Other than that, my luck on the new version has been dismal, as I keep YASDing in ways I'd never thought possible. I'm very happy with getting to dlvl16, but I haven't made it anywhere close since this game. I think I'll restart my player after I get back in shape, and keep playing without the terrible sense that my game's jinxed ;)

Pre-0.9.9 / [H|98%|10] My first Mancubus YASD

This is my first game beside those to test that bug and a couple of others to access new traits and die. As you'll see, I decided to start fresh immediately, after all.
44% of my health lost in three shots fired on the same round. I wasn't aware of the amount of damage they can cause, so I can't say I'm too disappointed.
Just before that damn 'M' took me out (though I must thank it for finishing one Arach off for me), I had overpowered 2 Arachs, a Pain Elemental, several Lost Souls (which I successfully engineered to block line of fire for the rest of the bastards by maneuvering them into the hallway to my left), a Baron, a few Hell Knights, at least one captain and maybe a couple of others, attacking me in two groups - one team just as I had entered the level, and the other as I was dealing with the first. If not for Juggler, it wouldn't have lasted half as long - once that baron blasted me into that room on the bottom left, surrounding me with Lost Souls and 1-2 of those Arachs which had previously been conveniently locked away, the only thing that saved me was an immediate rocket blast, taking out Lost Souls and knocking back everything else, including myself who was thrown back out of that room. The turn it would have taken me to switch without having Juggler would have ment certain death by nibble - a sad end for any marine...

Bug Reports / Message colour bug

It breaks if the message continues to a new line (i.e. the first part, on the line where it starts, is coloured while the second part, on the new line, is not), at least in the message history. This is pretty bad if you're trying to find that "relatively safe" message by colour after missing it when it first appeared (which happens a lot, to me anyway :) ).

Don't worry, this shouldn't fry your machine or anything like that, but just in case this is a real threat to player.dats everywhere (it might not be salvageable once the bug kicks in), I warmly recommend everybody back theirs up.
(EDIT: assuming this bug really is bad, is there any way to have this thread clearly visible to people entering the forum?)

This one's about as old as the ++ version.
It involved heavy experimentation, which is why my skill list is not nearly ideal.
I consider it quite successful as I was able to get quite far with terrible planning and being mostly unprepared, as prior to the ++ version all my games had crashed early on. By the time I had killed the queen I was short on ammo and was unaware of the hordes awaiting me on my way down. I was overpowered easily, but at least I killed her first.
It involved heavy experimentation, which is why my skill list is not nearly ideal.

I've had this around for quite a while and kept forgetting to post it.
My conclusions and opinions:
- Marines'll be better balanced by just having their bonuses. Pure weapon chars aren't that efficient as it is, and any better rounded class'll have plenty of XP points saved through their bonuses to pursue weapon skills with at least the same ease as marines.
- Technicians are only slightly better than marines, as while their bonus is much higher, high technical skill isn't very useful right now, compared with other skills.
- Medics are the best class available, considering just how useful high medical skill is and how many XP points are saved by accessing that high skill level through a medic. By starting a medic with one level in sidearms you might have a *slightly* rough start (fighting for advanced sidearm skill), but everything clears up once you can recover from almost any degree of injury using one medpack. With that, you're free to pursue other skills - with a saving of thousands of XP points (300+600+900 for a medic of expert medical skill. Consider that advanced sidearms skill costs him 800+1600, which means he buys them for 600 points beyond the bonus).
- Scouts are next best, considering that sidearms are currently the most useful weapons and that his general bonus is otherwise very good. Still, if you intend on putting many levels into medical, you're saving more points by picking a medic.
