Discussion / Music in Ao100
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:58 »
So, I was wondering...

If you're doing a 100-level game, does the music go back up to level2 in the lua when you get to level 26?

Or could I, say, add a bunch of new lines at the end of the list to stuff in sirgalahad's Doom II music?

Just a thought I had. :V

Requests For Features / A Keys Idea That Isn't Boring
« on: February 02, 2011, 00:59 »
I'm pretty sure we've talked about keys before, and I'm also pretty sure we've discarded them, because although "find the key" gameplay was a cornerstone of the era Doom is from, it would really screw up DoomRL's coffee break pacing.

I fixed it!

If a key is on a level, whether it is generated or carried, there is a chance a vault will be on it with indestructible walls and a door of the same color. But they shouldn't just be vaults. It's more fun if we make the color mean something. Blue doors could hide meds and powerups. Yellow doors contain equipment and mods. Red doors contain a whole bunch of overleveled monsters.

Even more fun!

As long as we're coloring things, let's paint some levers, too. A blue lever megaspheres you when you pull it and doesn't run out. A yellow lever dumps a bunch of ammo every where. A red lever smashes you into pulp.

So why would I want a red key?

Because the colors in these descriptions were placeholders. Remember how in old school roguelikes, you wouldn't know what a wand did until you tested it? A particular color of key is a mystery until you find something to stick it in. Good luck! :V

I think AoDD makes anything harder than NTR easier due to the early chainguns. This is my first HMP win, and there's a guy down the page with a N! run, so it can't be complete nonsense.

I didn't get the addresses this time, but when it happened, I realized that my most recent crash was part of a pattern. The majority of my crashes happens, regardless of what I'm doing at the time, at the moment when command control.mid ends and is about to loop. This is not reliable or repeatable per se, however I distinctly remember several times when a crash coincided precisely with the distinctive final note of that song, on both XP and Vista. It may be coincidence or my imagination that it was that song so often, and the bug is just something about the way the game handles music in general, but in either case, I think that's where attention should be focused.

This one was apparently totally messed up. I was doing one of two things when the crash happened: moving out of a doorway into a room I suspect contained enemies, or reloading my Cleric Beretta.

Requests For Features / Rebuild .dats from Mortem Folder
« on: June 15, 2008, 03:11 »
If you can't figure out why this is happening, there's a way to provide a temporary solution. Create a program that reconstructs the .dats using the finished games in /mortem as input. This way, if a player's running total breaks for any reason, they can fix it instantly by running this little .bat. Of course, this would make it easier to falsify the .dats, but that could be prevented by including a checksum of some kind at the end of each mortem, and if somebody really wants to fake stuff then bully for them anyway. Not everyone is interested in unlocks.

After failing repeatedly with HMP in both conventional and shotgun styles, I decided to toy with AoMr. I had this crazy idea that, what with the bonuses and all, and less inventory problems, and a fairly compact-ish build, it might actually be a little easier than just plain HMP.

Unfortunately, I will never know whether that hypothesis is true or not, because the RNG decided to dump his love all over me today. I can only assume it's the result of naming my character for one of the greatest snipers in history.

Some of you might be wondering why I saved, and broke my demo into three parts. The answer is that on those two breaks, I backed up my save. No, I wasn't savescumming! If I actually died, I'd delete it, just like a good marine should. But you see, I seem to have this weird pattern. We all get crashes, of course, but it seems like mine pretty much always fall on my best runs. I get some choice relic, or pass some roadblock I've been struggling with in the gametype I'm on. Then I get gremlins.

If you got a Blaster and a Trigun in an AoMr run, you'd want to keep a crash from eating them, too. If that had happened, I probably wouldn't have a monitor anymore. So, good thing that didn't come into play.

Don't forget to watch that demo! You might see that loadout and think "pssh, he had it easy." And... you're pretty much right, generally speaking. But there were a couple spots where I dug myself out of some insanity. You should've seen what this bitch did to me with Arch-viles. Crazy, man.

PS: Oh my god.

All that bragging, and I could've gone for a full win, but I forgot which stupid relic gives you the Angel Arm. Why did the wiki have to be down today? I loathe everything with the burning intensity of a thousand suns. And I just deleted my goddamn backup. DAMMIT. ITALICS.

Bug Reports / Scores Missing
« on: June 02, 2008, 13:52 »
I noticed yesterday that my highscore and player file are missing my first two HMP games. This is odd since, after I played them, I remember looking at them in the highscore table. Something must be overwriting the .dats. Here is my player.dat and score.dat, as well as the post mortems of the two missing games, which are intact.

This is my first AoMr victory. I've been hot the past couple days. Is this version of the game easier, or am I just playing it too much?

That said, this win was pretty insane. I met the Cyberdemon with the meager sum of 68 bullets, and put him down with all but 16 of them. I had to use all my armor, and when he tore all that up, it didn't matter that I was using large meds, my health stayed at or below fifty. That means that if either of the phase devices I came in with had been missing, I wouldn't be posting this.

The endgame was so stressful I can't really remember any other highlights. If you want a more nuanced look at this game, watch the demo I'm posting here.

Somewhere around Hell 4 or 5, I ran out of ammo. I mean completely out of ammo. I had already spent at least two levels using a rocket launcher as my main weapon and trying to avoid situations where I'd have to kill imps. It got so bad that when I found an Anti-Freak Jackal, the best thing I could do was unload it to feed my chaingun. And then it happened again on the very next level with a Trigun. I picked up a plasma rifle and ran around praying I'd run into some Arachnotrons or Revenants just so I could keep shooting after they died. Finally on Hell 6, I was really completely tapped. No rockets, no cells, four bullets in the chaingun. At the end of a short corridor: a former captain. Mana from heaven! I gleefully pranced over to tap him on the shoulder and politely ask for his weapon.

But he had a friend. Then two friends. And some other guys showed up. I had to double back down the hallway, and loop around to the other door; thank god they were all standing on a lever or something. There was a red blip in the room! I'm sav... oh, it's not a Berserk Pack. :(

I'm down to my last four bullets, I've burned through a bunch of armor and medkits, I'm up against the wall. I did the only thing I could. I charged the following group...
    2 sergeants
    3 captains
    2 lost souls
    2 imps
    a Baron of Hell (!)
...and beat them all to death with my bare hands.

I didn't have any ammo problems after that. Next level was a city with a room completely full of cells, so I dropped my rocket launcher and gruffled those up. The rest is history. YAVP.

Until literally 30 seconds ago, I was doing an AoB run. I had accidentally skipped the Chained Court.

By dint of dumb luck and unprecedented acts of cowardice tactical prowess, I made it to Hell.

I thought it was all over when I saw this.

Note the stairs, then note the arch-vile.

Result: I stabbed an arch-vile to death. Later, (as I was attempting to write this very post, actually) I was here.

I arrived here with several sets of armor, one large medpack, three phase devices, and the knife that had brought me all this way. Dodging between the Cyberdemon's rockets, I met him toe to toe. Long story short, I'm behind the red block, with just the armor on my back, 2% health, and my quarry just three steps away.

There is a weird AI bug. I sat behind that block and I waited. And waited. And waited. He just sat there, mooing at me. I moved around behind the block a little bit. I could hear him stomping around, matching my steps, but he made no move to close the distance. He just. Kept. Mooing. MOOOOOOOOOO

Just as I was steeling my resolve for the final descent into oblivion, a severe thunderstorm restarted my computer.

The Random Number God giveth, and he taketh away. The powers that be chose not to show us this brave marine's final fate, but whatever it was, let it be known: he had Guts.

Modding / A Note Regarding Multiple Mods
« on: March 10, 2008, 15:55 »
In both of the threads that are in this forum so far, people have more or less said that you shouldn't be able to do that.

This is silly. If you disallow it, it will just make people add more stuff to the mod they already have, and it will force them to reverse engineer a bunch of junk, and what they have will eventually become a totally gross and ugly ball of code.

Are there problems with having more than one mod loaded? Yes, there frequently will be. So? If there's a conflict, let the modder figure it out so they can change their work to make it fit with whatever they want it to fit with. Hacking away at arcane trash like that is half the fun of coding, isn't it? :p

I don't have much to say other than that, it would just be totally wicked awesome.
