Discussion / Re: Badges Guide
« on: March 19, 2011, 02:46 »
It must've taken you quite a bit of time to reorganize the guide like that, Game Hunter. It's a much smoother read now, and it seems easier to actually remember all the advice in there. Very much appreciated!

2
Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely try a Gun Kata build for Quartermaster Gold. Not in the least because I still need to take out 19 more hell knights with pistols to achieve Hell Knight rank.

I did consider that a nuke guarantees a partial win even after death. It's just that I don't like the idea of setting off a nuke, then killing Cybie, and spending the remaining countdown realising I ruined a standard win. ;)

EDIT: Christ, I'm dense. I just realised the game might end in a standard win if you set off a nuke, and kill Cybie before it goes off. Which means I've been voluntarily throwing standard wins out the window. Am I right?

Woot, 2nd Lieutenant!

This run taught me that a HR->HR->DM build is very helpful (if not essential) for AoRA, but trying to get EE->EE->Int->Int was a mistake. I'm not sure what build would've been better though, perhaps Rel->Rel->SM->MFA makes more sense. On HNTR, a quick dive usually doesn't get me enough experience to get a master trait, but two levels of Rel make a big difference if you're reloading shotguns all the time.

I've done several quick dives lately. This seems to work out fine on HNTR if a partial win is all you need. I took pretty much every staircase as soon as it came into view, and didn't bother to hunt for experience if there was time left. I'm afraid I'm going to have to unlearn that for HMP and up.

With two levels of HR and DM, Hellgate becomes laughably easy if there's no need to clear it. You can just dart past everything and make a beeline for the exit. The cacodemons will take care of most flying skulls, and after that their missiles are mostly blocked by pink gorillas that are too slow to get you. The Beastie Boys seemed too drunk to aim straight.

After that I ran through two consecutive arachnotron caves relatively easy, with a little help from a berserk pack and a supercharge. I evaded most mancubi and revenants, and blindly killed one of each. Somewhere around level 22 I entered a level with huge rooms, which was crawling with arch-viles and mancubi. An extremely lucky phase sent me to the far end of the map, two tiles away from the staircase.

Once I made it to Phobos Arena, I was dangerously short on, well, everything, except shells. Some tattered rags for armor, an empty rocket launcher, a half loaded plasma rifle and a chain gun with no spare ammo. My 300 shotgun shells were useless, as I never seem to find a way to evade Cybie's rockets long enough to down him with buck shots. No BFG, no rockets, no hellwave pack, and above all, no nuke for a partial win.

So, after a short but tedious pillar-dance with Cybie, my futile attempt to take him down with my unimpressive arsenal was interrupted by a "Warning! Explosion in 4 minutes!" And only then did it hit me: the most basic and obvious principle of AoRA...

0.9.9.2 / Re: [E|99%|YAFW] First Full Win
« on: March 11, 2011, 03:48 »
That's one curb stomping first run, congratulations.

My understanding is that for Conqueror, you just have to win all the levels that you get to through red staircases.  (Hell Arena, Chained Court, etc.)  You don't have to beat JC's level at all.
The wiki entry for Conqueror says "generated levels include any that require you to take red stairs to reach them". I always figured this meant both special and normal levels. Perhaps only HF is excluded in the requirements?

I may be misinterpreting things though. For instance, I still haven't figured out whether a full win is awarded if you nuke JC and die in the blast.

5
Man, this makes the request in the Help Wanted thread for a system to tie these files into the forums pretty simple.
I think that's what Tavana was hinting at.

6
Nice. You wouldn't be inclined to post the XSD for that, Kornel? Or would that be spoiling? ;)

(Unfortunately it doesn't list the unachieved badges, so I can't use it, but thelaptop is bound to get some street cred for casually leaning into the watercooler and whipping out his forty page hardcopy.)

7
Seconded.

Especially for player.wad. I keep browsing the player info alongside the wiki/manuals to decide which badge to go for, and a text export would be useful.

Text format would be sufficient, but color-coded information would have to be displayed differently from the player info screens (achieved/remaining badges for instance are only distinguished by color).

0.9.9.2 / Re: [U|AoH|91%|8|YASD] nanofibre cybernetic armour
« on: March 07, 2011, 13:45 »
That's a very unfortunate death. But maybe you shouldn't be wearing a piece of armor with a 55% snail factor in the first place, if there are mancubi and arch-viles around.

Personally I don't save scum. It's the unfortunate deaths that make the narrow escapes and the hard-fought victories worthwhile. The RNG giveth, the RNG taketh away.

Besides, save scumming messes up the statistics in your player.wad.

9
Now about that ultimate ending....
Is that the old bit where you switch to the Butcher's Cleaver, use a phase device, and pray for that 1/1368 chance to land in JC's gut?

10

So, am I getting this correctly:

For a full win, you need a nuke (to reveal the stairs to HF), invulnerability (to survive the blast) and the means to beat JC.

Stuff that can be used as a nuke: thermonuclear bomb, nuclear BFG, and Trigun.

The Spider's Lair has a guaranteed thermonuclear bomb, but the level itself isn't guaranteed. The Mortuary has a guaranteed nuclear BFG, and the level is guaranteed if you play on at least HNTR. The Trigun isn't guaranteed.

Stuff that makes you invulnerable: invulnerability globe, lava element.

Invulnerability globes aren't guaranteed. The lava element is guaranteed in the Lava Pits.

What you're saying is, a full win can be planned as long as you play on HNTR or up, visit the Lava Pits to get the lava element, visit the Mortuary to get the nuclear BFG, and survive to beat JC?

Going for Strongman Silver, this meticulously levelled Vampyre, carrying a chainsword and two nukes, had a perfect kill rate when I got to level 24. Running into a mancubus and an arch-vile at the edge of my view, I decided to run for the stairs, leave a little present, and descend to face Cybie. (Why the kill count doesn't reflect the nuking is beyond me.)

With two red armors at 100%, a dozen big med packs, and a nuke, the worst that could happen was a partial win. As soon as I saw Cybie, I ran into melee range, and proceeded to carefully take him down. When he tore my red armor to shreds, I took a med pack, slipped into another red armor, and continued, keeping an eye on my health at all times. I was certain I could take another whack, when Cybie hit me, ruined my second red armor, hit me again in the same turn, and helped himself to my intestines.

Why, oh head-desking why, hadn't I set off that nuke?

Then, another run, in which another meticulously levelled near-Vampyre on unnecessarily low health daintily skipped 'round a corner on level 18, and was greeted by two imps' fireballs and a mancubi rocket.

Fuck this game.

Then, the third run, in which an absolutely unprepared and utterly careless foot-slogger, decided to just bash into everything on the shortest path to the down stairs...

...and found a lucky computer map which revealed a nuke, and invulnerability globes scattered all over the lower levels. Which lasted long enough to pick Cybie apart with an unmodded combat knife.

This was absolutely the most undeserving attempt at Strongman Silver ever. I never even got a knife until level 9. I waltzed through the Halls of Carnage just to get the Supercharge, and leave. I accidentally entered the Lava Pits because I was invulnerable and didn't read the stairs' description. I could've gotten another Compet-n Silver Cross with ease, and I might've used those homing phases to get a Major Icarus Cross. Had I cared.

But I'll take that Strongman Silver, thank you.

And I see that you've killed Cybie quite a few times considering the number of games you've played.
Those are mostly ITYTD wins, except for an AoMr full win on HNTR (marksmanship somehow seems overpowered to me, even without Gun Kata). I think I can get at least a partial win on ITYTD reliably, if I don't have the RNG against me. I've played earlier versions (up until 0.9.8 or 0.9.8.5 IIRC) but I put the game aside a couple of years ago - I didn't like the then-new mod packs at all, and I somehow thought the graphics version would be out soon. ;)

Quote
I see you put an Agility mod on your shotgun...don't! The accuracy statistic does not affect the chance to hit with shotguns as they hit everything in the firing spread.

If you're going to run an Ammochain build - put that accuracy mod on your rapid weapon, preferrably 2 of them!
Thanks for the tip. As said, I never liked mod packs and consider them a necessary evil. When I find a mod, I usually just slap it onto the first piece of equipment that accepts it. The new assemblies make mods a little less bad, though. I'll read up on the subject.

Quote
Don't be afraid to redesign the level layout with your rocket launcher if you get in to a jam like when you died there. (Retreat in to the room you were next to make an exit to the right side with the RL perhaps.)
I don't think I ran into trouble because I had no way out, but because I was bashing keys and stopped thinking. I could've easily taken an arch-vile and two mancubi if 1) I'd actually USED that high power BFG, 2) I'd taken off my Necroarmor, or 3) had given up on the perfect kill rate and fled downstairs.

Quote
That 'run' command is always helpful!
I use it all the time. In the upper levels I even keep some small med packs for when I'm tired and need to be able to run.

Quote from: Deathwind
I would have rocket jumped south, ducked around the corner and kill them from there but when in doubt phase away.
It wasn't my position that got me into trouble in the first place, but I'll keep that tip in mind for when it does. Thanks.

Quote
also remember weapons can have more than one of a type of mod unlike armor
I know. I just happen to have a *cough* very sophisticated and elaborate strategy when it comes to mod packs, which often prevents the practical use of multiple mods of the same type in anything more complicated than a pair of tactical boots. ;)

EDIT, after reading a little on assemblies:

Are you sure about armor accepting only one type of mod, Deathwind? Or did you mean basic assemblies?

On the whole, I'm not sure anymore whether I like mod packs any better now that there are assemblies. The combinations are just too scarce, and too obscure. If at all a player figures out what mod packs to combine into an assembly, he'll still be at the mercy of the RNG for finding them, and will probably have to sacrifice one or two inventory slots for them as well. Also, I propose that the nanofiber green armor be renamed to "Cheibriados Fan Club T-Shirt".

Before him 32 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 22 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 7 souls claim to have killed him...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
2 killed the bastard and survived.
2 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

Finally I'm getting the slightest idea of how to play on HMP, and made it to Sergeant Major. I was going for UAC Silver and Veteran Silver, but died in the attempt and got Gatekeeper Silver instead. And a Gold Cluster UAC Star! I usually don't care much for medals, but 100 kills without taking damage has always seemed impossible to me, so I take a little pride in this one.

The one thing I've learned from this run is that it pays off to just wait around for some suckers to enter your FOV, and to fire blindly into suspicipous areas. Also, this is the first time I got Ammochain, and I have to admit I never had as much fun with a plasma rifle before.

I had a perfect kill rate until I met the charming couple of mancubi pictured above, accompanied by an arch-vile who just wouldn't go down. The three of them ate away all of my medkits. I did get that Arch-vile, but the third reincarnation of those mancubi did me in. Note to self: take off the Necroarmor before taking a beating; and don't forget you're carrying a High Power BFG and an assload of power cells, next time you're down to 6% health and scouting for mancubi.

So, with 18 Bronze, 3 Silver, and 1 Gold under my belt, I'll finally be able to experience the joys of Ao100! Playing at the same blinding speed as this run, it should only take me about 17 hours to complete...

Discussion / Re: Badges Guide
« on: February 25, 2011, 02:20 »

Great job on that guide, Game Hunter! As one who's only recently started playing the badges versions of DoomRL, I can say it's very helpful.

But if you don't mind my criticism, there's quite a bit of repetition in there. Have you considered grouping the chapters by challenge and dividing them by badge color?

So in stead of the current division:

...
4. Bronze badges
   4.1. UAC Bronze
   4.2. Veteran Bronze
   ...
5. Silver badges
   5.1. UAC Silver
   5.2. Veteran Silver
...

Consider this:

...
4. UAC Badges
   4.1. UAC Bronze
   4.2. UAC Silver
   ...
5. Veteran Badges
   5.1. Veteran Bronze
   5.2. Veteran Silver
   ...
...

You might be able to get rid of the repetitions that way, and group the subjects thematically. I think it makes sense for readers, to read all there's to a challenge in one chapter.

Requests For Features / Re: Purpose of Unlockables
« on: September 22, 2009, 12:44 »
The ranking system can be divorced from the unlockable system with little harm to the goals you've mentioned. Aiming for a higher rank will still be a perfectly viable pursuit, but now players wouldn't need to have to play many hours worth of play, or have to struggle in the earlier challenges to unlock the things. They can just go to what they want and participate in the same ranking system in their own way.

Kids today. Back in my day, we didn't have challenge modes, we didn't get to unlock crap, we didn't have weapon mods, or even Doom sounds! We set the code page manually, fired up the game from the command line, blasted our way through one godforsaken spider cave after the other, lost every fourth run to a different crash bug, AND WE LIKED IT!

I guess what I'm saying is that challenge modes and ranks were added to DoomRL together. Yes, separating them would make perfect sense. The only reason I'd hate to see that happen is because you're WRONG! because I feel unlocking an actual, playable game mode is a more tangible reward than receiving a disconnected rank in the player stats for its own sake.
