0.9.9.5 / [H|YAAM] My first 0995 game, and my first HMP win ever!

Of course, the Hurt me plenty part might just be because I spent so much time in 0.9.9.4 messing around with UV challenge runs :)
I decided to go for the old standby with a Ammochain + Whizkid run. Even after the MAc nerf a couple of versions back, it's still a fairly effective combination.
I was lucky enough to find the mod packs for a tactical shotgun, which helped a lot early on, especially in the Wall. But after that, the RNG was really stingy with exotics and uniques the whole game... and when I finally found the Necroarmor, I didn't have enough health for it to be worth using for a couple more levels.
Overall, I like this new version. The AI improvements kept the game unpredictable, though I think it also the last couple of levels easier than they would have been in 0.9.9.4 -- instead of staying clustered in the middle, all the Arch-viles came charging toward me to get cut down before there were any corpses to revive. The early game got quite a bit harder, with the level 8 bruiser brothers and level 16 Cyberdemon(!), and the enemies on the wall, the halls of carnage, armory, and so on harder to get good position on. Music is great, as always.
The Spider Mastermind is brutal; I took one burst from her before deciding to take the coward's way out and use the lava element to kill her.
Maybe not quite as impressive of a run as Tormuse's Conquerer HMP mortem from yesterday,but I was still quite amazed with myself when I pulled this one off.

This Angel of Marksmanship should have been a win, if only I hadn't stupidly run out of bullets with the Cyberdemon down to only 'heavily wounded'.
It didn't help that practically no ammo spawned in Phobos Hell, but I've come to expect that. No, what really made this a stupid death was level 24, which was one of those warehouse levels with 3 large rooms and a couple of smaller ones. I started in the left room, explored that room almost completely, then started to attack the center room full of two arch-vile/baron packs. A Bulletdance build is incredibly powerful in terms of raw damage -- by this point, I was killing viles in two or three six-bullet-bursts. The problem was that by the time I dealt with both viles on this floor, I was down to something like 50 bullets, and still no stairs. So of course I finally find them tucked away in the corner of that first room, in one of the two tiles I neglected to uncover in my first pass through the room.
If I had just explored that first room fully when I started level 24, I would have had plenty of ammo left for the Cyberdemon, and would have won the game easily.
Sigh.

Bug Reports / Re: [Linux, 0.9.9.3] DoomRL fails to start

I didn't have music enabled, so that's not it.
I noticed eventually that I had a typo in my keybindings.lua file -- I was trying to comment out the medkit example, and missed the last 'end,' line. I don't know enough about LUA to know why that brought down the whole show, but changing that fixed the problem.
Thanks anyway.
I guess the real bug here is that LUA crashed without giving any indication as to why.

Hi,
I've been playing DoomRL on and off for a few versions now.
I just downloaded 0.9.9.3 but it is refusing to start. When I execute doomrl, either directly or with any of the shell scripts, it pauses for a couple of seconds, then dies with no indication of anything going wrong. The only change is a file "log.txt" is created, which is not terribly helpful either:

I'm running Linux, Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition.
Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
