Requests For Features / Re: Option to clear input buffer
« on: November 13, 2009, 12:42 »
I used to play like this... then I started my N! AoMC runs. That really beats tactical defense into you, as well as single tapping.

Unfortunately for me, I already have the AoMC diamond badge and I still haven't completely learned this lesson. Come to think of it, I've been playing roguelikes for ~15 years and I still only slow down when I perceive that there might be danger... or I'm on an elemental plane in Nethack (you only have to die once on the plain of air before you smarten up). Maybe I'll learn one day, but I bet I'll still get burned from being "too comfortable".

We can?

O_o

How?

At the bottom of doomrl.ini lets you add custom messages to appear in color. RED, BROWN, BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN are valid colors, PURPLE and ORANGE not so much. Here are the extra five entries I added to my ini:

Code: [Select]
YELLOW_1     = "You shiver from cold...";
YELLOW_2     = "You sense a passage to a place beyond...";
YELLOW_3     = "You feel a breeze of morbid air...";
GREEN_1      = "You feel there is something really valuable here!";
GREEN_2      = "A sense of loss comes over you.";

Other colors could be valid, the ones I listed were the only ones I tested.

Requests For Features / Option to clear input buffer
« on: November 12, 2009, 18:06 »
I realize this will be met with people saying I should just play slower, but I'd like to see an option in the config file that when turned on would discard all incoming key presses prior to displaying any new messages. This would help me greatly when I'm looking for the last mob on the level and stupidly hold down a movement key. Currently I'll just get murdered because by the time I see the mob/message that I'm being shot, I probably have another 10 or so movement inputs queued. Clearing the buffer would solve most of the problem, assuming I can let go of the key the moment the message popped up, but in practice (depending on the repeat speed) it would still turn a large number of queued inputs into around 1 or 2, which is much more live-able. Just a thought.

Bug Reports / 0.9.9 EmptyConfirm message delay
« on: November 11, 2009, 00:02 »
I was poking around the ini file and noticed the EmptyConfirm option for pausing the game when you try to fire an empty weapon. Unfortunately it appears (in Windows XP and Linux) that the message comes after pressing enter. So if you try to fire an empty weapon the game appears to stop responding to key presses, but really it is waiting for you to hit enter, then it tells you it was waiting for you to hit enter.

Bug Reports / Re: Problem with AoMC and SoB?
« on: November 10, 2009, 16:00 »
I'll volunteer, I could use a break from N! AoI runs anyway. Too bad I wasn't paying attention during my last AoMC run, I went ammochain, but focused on firing speed instead of damage. How should one test it properly? I was thinking charting distance, # of shots fired/hit, current traits and weapon mod status. Is there a better way?

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|AoH|44%|YASD] Longinus Diamond Badge
« on: November 08, 2009, 17:21 »
I carried the chainsaw from the court to deal with the lost souls, even with picking them off one by one I still needed a medpack after the ordeal. The demons went into the lava to rid myself of the corpses, I didn't want to deal with them raising while dealing with the Angel. At least I assume they would have raised, I don't actually know.

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|AoMC|52%|9|YASD] So very pissed off...
« on: November 07, 2009, 11:00 »
In before the "you should memorize all the badges crowd". I keep a second copy of DoomRL around so I can run it to see what badges are mid-game. The death that caused me to do that isn't at the forefront of my memory, but I can sympathize given that it can be quite aggravating, I was rather annoyed when it happened.

On the bright side you got the Arena platinum, so the Destroyer diamond is definitely within your reach.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My first serious Max Carnage run, hence the reason I got all four Destroyer badges this run. I ventured into Hell's Arena because of the berserk pack near the stairs, didn't actually expect to finish it, but figured at least I could get a platinum that run. I only went to the Mortuary because of the invul. globe near the stairs, managed to clear the place out while still invincible. The level before cybie I found an invul globe, nuke and stairs all near each other. I could have tried for the full win, but considering how well I had done up to that point and all the mobs near the stairs, I decided to play it safe and just go for the standard win.

Actually I did take the armor off for the Lost Souls and Demons, because I needed it at 100% for the Angel. Good thing too, because the armor wouldn't have survived the next hit, and the speed loss probably would have killed me. Funny how both my diamond badges (this and Pacifism) both involved me not attacking things.

I stand corrected, the idea must not have been that far fetched then. There is still the minor detail of surviving, but I assume you know the trick to that.

Discussion / Re: Well then.
« on: November 05, 2009, 22:16 »
Speaking only in theory, it shouldn't be that hard to swipe tiles from Dwarf Fortress, assuming it is widely known how the official GFX mode is looking to load the images (or textures). As long as that information is available it should be easy to make custom tiles, or at least write something to convert an image into a "tile", possibly splicing it into a data file.

As for the processing concerns, I can't see why it would peg the processor. The OpenGL term I wrote barely uses the processor (2.53 dual core, shouldn't matter) when playing DoomRL. Part of the Dwarf Fortress problem is the lack of "down time". Since the game progresses instead of waiting for a keypress, there are squares that change even when the game is paused and DF is only single threaded the interface has to work a bit differently, which leaves a lot of room for inefficiency. Assuming the display screen->accept keypress->display screen->etc. paradigm is kept, it's easy to write efficient code with only one or two threads (I like threads though). Even if that paradigm isn't followed, good code can still be written, just won't be as easy.

Either way, it'd be cool to play with an ASCII tileset, mainly so the window was a touch bigger on my screen (hopefully).

Images before the fight:

Images after the fight:

My guess is that after looking at these quite a few people are going to be scratching their head trying to figure out just what I did to clear the level. I don't want to spoil the surprise right away, but I'm interested to see if anyone catches on. If it makes anyone feel better, I've never even seen Dragonslayer, never mind gotten a chance to try to pick it up, so I'm not some all-knowing-player.....yet... :)

Side note: This is the first time I've actually used my website for "public" use, so if the images just disappear or the server stops responding, then either I lost power briefly and my server turned off, or I was sloppy writing the webserver (gotta reinvent the wheel...) and screwed something up, so lets hope for the best.

Pretty stupid death, but the entire point was the Longinus Diamond badge so after I got that, I wasn't really trying as hard. I took screenshots of my character/inventory pre/post Unholy Cathedral, I can post those if there is any interest. Oh yeah, ignore the game time, the moment I made it to the Cathedral, I had to go grocery shopping, eat dinner and watch a movie. Which gave me a good few hours of anticipation, because I was pretty sure I made it there with enough gear to pull it off, but I had to wait a bit before I could devote my full attention to it.

Heh, if someone felt like making a 32x64 tileset I already have an OpenGL term, so with swapping a few textures around DoomRL could easily be played with a tileset. Difficulty: Linux only and I've been playing roguelikes for too long to leave ASCII, even OpenGL ASCII.
