Nightmare! / [N!|AoMC|100%|YAFW] Veteran Angelic

Of all the Angelic's this is the one I always thought was within my grasp. I usually play a damage focused game (lots of SoB levels) but this time I went for a speed focused build. The initial idea was to get another Longinus Diamond (got it before in 0.9.9.6) but as I went through the levels everything clicked and I realised I was on track for another Angelic. I guess it's a little tacky using AoMC to get it but I think this is a good platform to aim for an Elite :-)
There was a plasma shotgun in Deimos Lab but I got a sniper/power mod combo and chose to make a plasmatic combat shotgun instead. I thought it would make more sense because shells are easier to manage as an ammo source. After that I just rolled along - with guaranteed corpse disposal nightmare isn't that bad :-)
My first Longinus Diamond used the knife throwing technique but this time I wanted to do it properly. Between HR3, Fin3 and the ripper the AoD went down hard (although it wasn't damageless - took me a moment to work out the right rhythm to avoid getting hit).
Limbo was alright, felt easier than the Mortuary (first time I've finished it!). Helped a lot that I had some seriously big guns and corpse disposal at the ready.
I periodically ran out of plasma but never shells which, I think, validates my decision with the combat shotgun. Having a massively damaging melee option didn't hurt either :-)
And now I'm finally a full General :-)

Nightmare! / [N!|AoSh+AoOC|87%|YAVP] Angel of Sergeant Farming! (Shottyman Angelic)

Whoo hoo! First Angelic! With two bonus diamonds!
I got lucky with the first 2 levels - nice layouts and I was able to farm a few hundred sergeants on level 2. Had a bad moment on level 1 when I got caught by a Mancubus/Baron tag team. I'd been camping so they were respawning faster than I could kill them! Luckily I managed to make to the level exit... Level 2 was better and left as my kill count hit 1000 - I thought that would be enough to carry me through :-) Level 3 had a great layout and an invulnerability sphere next to the stairs. I was doing really well when I got caught between a Mancubus and a Hell Knight, again! This time I was in a tight spot and what saved my bacon was a hastily slammed door (breaking line of sight with the Mancubus), an env suit and a mad dash to the invulnerability. I just made it! My kill count was good so I basically stair dived from there. Level 7 spawned me right next to a Mancubus Vile pack. Luckily I had a spare env suit and the stairs weren't too far...
I used the Tormuse Method (check out his Everyman Angelic - it's required viewing!) to take down the Spider Mastermind and it worked like a charm!
I get why everyone says this is the easiest Angelic to get - just takes a bit of luck and persistence. I had a great run yesterday when I found a plasma shotgun - was going amazingly until I ran out of ammo on level 6. Oh well - got it today!

Nightmare! / [N!|AoMr|81%|YAVP] Marksman Diamond!

I just checked my mortems and this was my 90th attempt in the past 3 months :-) I've been after this badge for years (since 2013 when I got the Marksman Platinum for the first time). It's quite a relief to finally get it and the icing on the cake: I have a recording of the run for posterity!
This was a very lucky game - I had a good supply of medpacks, great level layouts, lots of timely berzerks and maps and a power/bulk mod combo in the Chained Court gave me a high power pistol which I relied on heavily. This is the first AoMr game I've managed that actually spawned a pistol I could use: blaster. It helped a ton with the Revenants.
The other extremely lucky bit was an invulnerability globe just before the anomaly which helped me get through it in one piece. That more than anything else probably made the run.
Worst moment was the first door I opened in Deimos. I had to get up and walk around a bit to catch my breath and when I got back I got greeted with a rocket to the face from a Mancubus. I lost a very promising run recently in almost exactly the same way but for once I managed to do the right and the knock back from the pistol saved me. From there on the run was comfortable.
For me my biggest problem is playing too fast and screwing things up so I took a leaf out of Tormuse's book and took a lot of short breaks to clear my head when I needed it.
Overall I'm super chuffed.

Nightmare! / [N!|21%|YAVP] UAC Diamond

So in my last post (https://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,8314.0.html) I mentioned that I was really close to getting a pretty decent jump in rank. All I needed was a to get a gold/platinum/diamond run. Turns out 'only' needing a diamond is, uh, tricky. I gave up and started trying for that ever elusive Marksman Diamond (I've been trying for ages now) and approximately 100 attempts a few weeks later I was... frustrated. So I started browsing through the forums looking for advice when I found this: https://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,7290.msg64012.html#msg64012 and I thought to myself - that looks like fun, maybe I should try?
That was awesome. I had tons of luck (three really nicely timed invulnerability globes) and basically did a kamikaze stair dive the whole way. So I've done it: jumped from Lt. Colonel to Lt. General in one game :-)

I realised that I was two gold badges away from a very nice jump in rank. So I thought the best way to get a gold badge is to get a platinum badge :-) This run wasn't particularly interesting - AoMC makes things much easier as usual. But I've set myself up now for the next run - if I can snag a diamond/platinum/gold combo I'll jump from Lt Colonel to Lt. General in one game. Definitely aiming for that now!

My first conqueror medal! The worst part of getting this badge is Phobos Labs. That level tripped me up everytime. I was really happy to see the Military Base this time - it's so much easier it's not funny.
I almost got this badge yesterday when I messed it up by accidentally using a homing phase in Phobos Lab - I was stuck and couldn't complete the level. I kept going but, as I suspected, it didn't count as a proper level completion. Sigh. The MVP for the Mortuary was the super shotgun. That thing is amazing - I cleared the level without too much trouble. I had two shell boxes which really helped as well. Also I was extremely lucky to find two onyx mods which allowed me to try the lava boots for the first time which also made a huge difference. The Lava Pits were a formality really.
All in all this was a blast. Some of the most fun I've had in doomrl. Three platinums in about a week - I'm feeling ready to take on some diamonds! Although... I probably need to get back to work... (looks guilty)

Did this the easy way with AoMC. Had a few false starts (one game lasted exactly 17 seconds) but I eventually got going. Only bad moment was an early hell level where I spawned right next to a pack of revenants, mancubi and 2 arch-viles. Luckily I had a phase or I'd have been toast. The rest went pretty smoothly.

So... It's been 5 years since I last posted here... Honestly doesn't feel that long. I haven't played much in the meantime but I got hit by a sudden wave of nostalgia so I thought I'd fire things up again and pick up where I left off.
I never played melee before but I got inspired by Tormuse's youtube videos so I thought I'd give it a try. Vampyre is awesome! The only problem is that it tends to lead to catastrophic mistakes when I play too fast because I think I'm invincible. Seriously I lost a game after clearing the Mortuary with something like 5 large medpacks just sitting there because I forgot to check my health! Sigh. I now have a message sitting above my pc - Former Commandos Deserve Respect.
This was something like my fifth or sixth proper run and I finally managed not to get myself killed in stupidly creative ways. I screwed things up in the Mortuary so I ended up phasing out which irked me because I cleared it last time I tried... Sigh. That's the only reason I missed a YAAM.
My last try with JC ended like this: https://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,6102.msg52748.html so I was expecting a big fight. He went down almost immediately. Azrael's Scythe hits hard.

Post Mortem / [U|AoMC|YAAM] Gatekeeper + Scavenger Diamond, Destroyer Platinum.

I had to leave this one overnight and I struggled to get to sleep. I must've been dreaming of chaingunning demons :-) I'm kinda proud of this run because it feels like I'm beginning to get the hang of getting through the game without taking too much damage. (I know AoMC is DoomRL 'easy-mode' but it still counts!)
Stats: Damage taken - 177 Best streak: 174 (second best 166).
My strategy was simple: quit the moment my damage counter went above 200, quit if my damage counter went over 130 before the anomaly. Quit if I took a hit in the anomaly. Rinse, repeat. I didn't worry too much about taking damage in Phobos Base but I tried to keep it as low as possible. I only quit if it went higher than 20. Funny though - trying to do a damageless base entry netted me more losses than just trying to do it normally :-)
I avoided all special levels I couldn't reliably get through with minimal damage. This meant I couldn't use the tactic of running through the Anomaly - HR2 is not enough to avoid taking damage when the walls come down and I can't do CC+ without taking a few hits so that meant I had no access to agility mods (not that they're guaranteed anymore). Phobos Lab was not an option :-) I ended up having to rely on phases but luckily the new version seems to be quite generous so I usually had at least one when I got there.
I saw a post somewhere suggesting the easiest way to get Scavenger Diamond is to use AS. So - that's exactly what I did, works like a charm :-) Trying to get a 100% kill rate isn't too bad - the worst part of any level is the start when you never know if you're going to spawn next to a pack of Mancubi. Speed is the best defence here - I found in those situations I could usually run for cover before they even moved. The worst moment was when I spawned in an open level right in between a Vile/Mancubi pack and a pack of Knights and Barons. I had to phase out of that one and luckily ended up far away from the... excitement...
The level I took the most damage in was the Unholy Cathedral. When I got there I had about 91 damage but my melee skills suck so I took a beating from the lost souls. I can't quite get the hang of the new AI. I left with about 145 damage and, most importantly, the AS.
Feels good to have some diamonds again - this is my third Gatekeeper which is definitely the easiest one to get. I have my sights set on a few more though (Marksman is calling me and, of course, Destroyer :-) )

First win in the new version (because I'm stubborn and wanted my first win to be a UV one :-) )
The big moment in this game was when I entered the Phobos Lab - I've done it a few times on HMP and I honestly thought that the jump in difficulty between HMP and UV would involve sprinkling a few Barons/Knights around. I did not expect the nightmare demons... Luckily I walked in with tons of medkits, an ammo chain and Sharpshooter - I would never have survived without those. After pulling the second lever I ran back through the acid to soften up the surprise wave of demons and managed to get through. I'm not sure I'm going to do that again on my AoMr runs - if it wasn't for the technician being able to use multiple medkits without using up any time I would've been toast...
After that things went pretty smoothly - all the extra mods that are available now makes Sharpshooter quite potent - I don't usually bother with WK2 but this time round I had so many mods it made quite a difference.
Thoughts on the new version:
- I really like the new levels: Phobos Lab made me jump the first time I played it ;-)
- Whoever worked on the linux version did a superb job. It's much smoother and it doesn't max out the cpu anymore (on the console version - I never play the graphical version)
- Dual-Angels are... intriguing. I like the idea of mixing my favourite AoMC with some other challenges....
- I'm glad to see more of the nightmare enemies. I see they can turn up now in normal play on UV which adds an extra element of danger. Plus they creep me out - so quiet!
- I'd like to add myself to the list of people disappointed at the loss of the nuclear plasma rifle in the Spiders Lair. Maybe we can have a guaranteed nuke in one of the other levels? It doesn't matter much on my AoMr runs but my next goal is to get a full win... (I know there's a nuclear BFG in the mortuary... but it's the Mortuary goddammit!).
And before skarczew asks: I did try a Glass Cannon Cat-Eye build and it was pretty epic - until I very stupidly got blindsided by a Baron and ended up in a pool of lava. I'm definitely going to play it more in the future. Sharpshooter is probably still my favourite though (by a whisker :-) )

- I'd like to add myself to the list of people disappointed at the loss of the nuclear plasma rifle in the Spiders Lair. Maybe we can have a guaranteed nuke in one of the other levels? It doesn't matter much on my AoMr runs but my next goal is to get a full win... (I know there's a nuclear BFG in the mortuary... but it's the Mortuary goddammit!).
And before skarczew asks: I did try a Glass Cannon Cat-Eye build and it was pretty epic - until I very stupidly got blindsided by a Baron and ended up in a pool of lava. I'm definitely going to play it more in the future. Sharpshooter is probably still my favourite though (by a whisker :-) )

Diamond no. 2 :-) (Btw: I'm not sure if losing to JC counts as a YASD or YAVP since the game counts it as a standard win. I'm personally counting it as a YASD :-) )
Despite the Diamond (yay!) this game was a comedy of errors. First off I did clear the Wall but something must have resurrected just as I left. Second - I missed Hells Armoury! I didn't even realise it until I got a bit deeper and found stairs to the Halls of Carnage. Then in the Halls of Carnage I took too much time (went to get the last supercharge) and the lava swept away the BFG...
The only thing that went as planned was the Unholy Cathedral. I have a small confession to make - this is the first time I've ever attempted it! I just about never play melee builds and the AoD is kinda scary if you walk in without Brute... I used GameHunter's strategy (there's a youtube vid somewhere where he goes through how to beat the AoD safely without Brute) and it worked perfectly. Two diamonds now!
I had a homing phase so I tried the Mortuary with the idea of snagging the nuclear BFG. I ended up at the assault shotgun... In hindsight I was probably better off making a mad dash for the BFG.
The big plan was to fully finish the game - something I've yet to do. I've faced JC once before on UV and came up short that time as well. This time I was much better prepared - I had a bulk modded red armor and two envirosuits and a couple of large medpacks. The fight was going well but I found it difficult to pin JC down with all the teleporting. I made a huge mistake at a critical point in the fight when I had a clear shot but had run out of ammo on the nuclear plasma rifle. I swapped to what I thought was my backup plasma rifle and fired twice... Except it was the assault shotgun I'd used a little earlier to clear away some skulls :-( If I'd used the plasma rilfe I'm pretty sure I'd have been very close to taking him down.
After that things just got too crazy and I made a few other stupid mistakes (i.e. forgot I had a missle launcher). I really needed that BFG... JC absorbs huge amounts of damage on N! - I reckon my plasmas were doing over 70 points of damage a round (on AoMC of course) and I still couldn't bring him down fast enough to prevent the summoning from getting out of control. Time to rethink strategy.
Those of you who do this routinely - how do you cope with the teleporting? Running around playing hide and seek wasn't fun when I was a kid and really isn't fun in hell :-)

Finally done it! After all these years - a nightmare win :-) Man was this intense!
I was aiming for a Longinus Diamond but I realised when I got to level 17 that I wouldn't be fast enough to outrun the AoD (at least I think so - a scout with 2 levels of hellrunner would only put you at 140% - really needed some tactical boots but the rng was being stingy with the agility mods) :-( Had a piercing blade prepared and ready too... Sigh... Got through the anomaly on a lucky invulnerability globe which netted me my 3rd platinum :-)
Nightmare impressions: It's tough. Real tough. Even though AoMC makes it easier you still need to count your shots carefully, luring the big guys into doorways, water, close to barrels - it gets pretty tense. On UV once you get Int2 you can pretty much chug along from there - on nightmare you have to be extremely careful about disposing bodies. Luckily ammo problems are pretty much non-existent, I almost ran out of plasma at one point but farming an arachnotron got me back up to reasonable levels by the time I left :-)
I was too chicken to do the unchained court but, in hindsight, I really should have. Anyway - I should've been working but this damn game keeps drawing me in :-)

By my not so very good calculations this took me about 60 tries to get right. I was oscillating between Gun Kata/Sharpshooter attempts until I realised I much prefer Sharpshooter. It's a much harder early game but everything gets easier at level 7 :-)
This was also the first time I found the Anti-Freak Jackal. Funnily enough I ended up favouring my modded pistols using it only for certain situations (and it's great being able to shoot through walls with it). I whimped out and took Int2 but I don't think I really needed it. It was mostly just a crutch - I need to learn to do without it.
I love AoMr runs - this was quite a lot of fun (once I got the hang of it - all my previous AoMr wins were on HMP which is a walk in the park compared to this...)
As a final note: a weird coincidence - I use random names but for some reason all of my top scoring games were by Igor Savin :-)

I've been lurking on these forums for quite a while now - never felt the need to post. Until now! This was the most awesome DoomRL game I've ever played (and I've been playing since 0.9.9.2) :-) The difference maker for me was finding an early power mod which gave me just enough extra fire power with the chaingun to get by in the early game (just about all my AoMC games end before the Anomaly...). I've been having trouble with the Chained Court recently but I've tried the tactic of heading towards the Arena Master early (finishing off the Barons while I still have cover) and using the rocket launcher to keep him back (Int2 is a godsend for AoMC). I've got about a 50% success rate now which doesn't sound great but is a huge improvement over my Stay-close-to-the-Berserk-globes-and-wait-for-the-Barons-to-shred-you tactic...
For the Anomaly I went with a Need for Speed build - HellRunner 2, tactical armour and agility modded boots. That's not enough to guarantee you won't get hit as you sprint through but it seems to work 1 game in 3 (remember to shoot the door down before you sprint! Sigh...). Everything was downhill after that - a fast rapid-fire build is just about unstoppable. It felt good to cut through everything like a knife - my previous AoMC wins are usually mad scrambles for the stairs, this time I took sweet revenge... The Mastermind went down without any trouble - by then I could hit and run with impunity.
This is probably the only Diamond I'm going to be getting for a while though - I'm an Ultraviolence player, Nightmare kicks my ass almost immediately. I haven't got any Platinum Badges yet - there are a few UV ones that I might go for... Not sure what to do next, I've become a bit of an AoMC specialist (it's my favourite, followed closely by AoMr. I almost never play anything else...) so I guess Destroyer Platinum/Diamond should be the next goals but they both look like Hell to achieve...
Anyway - I'm really stoked with this - it's taken me months!
