Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [E|97%|Win] YAFVP - My first Cybie
« on: March 24, 2007, 08:49 »
The first RL I came in contact with was probably Nethack, and that one looks so immensely complex that I gave it up completely after a few tries. DoomRL is much easier to get a grip on, so now maybe I can "ascend" to the more complex ones :). I guess I'll give ADOM a try soon.

I can't believe how much challenge games, rank requirements and cross-death stats add to the enjoyment of the game.

0.9.8.5 was the first version I tried, but I always thought what really makes half the game is the music and the sounds. It gives you this great atmosphere. And I never even played the original Doom yet (I know, shame on me), I guess it adds even more for the people who did. But yeah, I really like the challenge games too. Actually a third of the games I played yet were probably AoMr challenges :-)

Congrats, that's a fast one. I played over 80 games before my first win.

Thank you, I'll go on to do some challenges next, got to make the next rank :-)

Are you aware of what it takes to get a full win?

No, not yet. From another mortem posted here I take it involves beating another boss after defeating Cybie. I wonder if you could do it with an inv globe and two nukes. No idea yet how to produce an alternative ending in the Phobos Arena, maybe you have to walk around Cybie to discover something? Please don't tell me yet, I'll try out a few things the next times I get to L25.

« on: March 10, 2007, 18:26 »
Well, I wanted to finally get a win for chrissake, so I took the Intuition-Path everyone said was so easy. Well, it is. I went into Phobos Arena in the end and didn't even get shot at, because Cybie got four BFG blasts and died before I saw him at all. On l24 I even found an inv globe (and I had two nukes in my pack), but I couldn't use that because a resident Arch-Vile blew it up when I was trying to get it.
Now, to figure out what you have to do to get a full win... :-)

I managed to get to Cybie again, using the same perk path. Rand() was a bit easier on me today so I got less Arachnatrons and only one or two Arch-Viles, but my ammo supply was quite short towards the end. This time, I entered the Phobos arena not with one, but two overcharged Plasma Rifles (still didn't get a BFG, though that was by stupidity). The fight looked good at the beginning, but took a bad turn once my red armor was destroyed. I got him down to "mortally wounded" again, then hit him with a rocket then when he was out of view, and another burst of Plasma. He fired a rocket back, and I was down to 30-some percent health and no medkits left, so I started up the nuke and fired my very last burst of Plasma (really the last in my inventory). In came his next rocket which took me down, but at least I took him with me this time :-). Can't show the mortem though because of the Nuke-explodes-after-death-in-phobos-arena-mortem-bug. Would this be considered a "partial win" without the bug?

Seems then that I don't understand the armor system correctly. I get (for SoB3):
RL: 4d4+3-4 = 4d4-1
PR: (1d8+3-4)x8 = (1d8-1)x8
Max damage: 15 (RL) vs. 56 (PR)
Min damage: 3(RL) vs. 0(PR)
Avg damage: 9(RL) vs. 28(PR)

So I guess small damage is reduced by another factor?

Thanks. I figured the RL does less damage in average than the Chaingun/Plasma Rifle at SoB3, so it'd be only useful against several enemies standing close together (or for blasting through walls). So I dumped it to have more place for ammo.

First time I ever got this far and faced the Cyberdemon. I almost got him, too. First emptied an overcharged Plasma Rifle at him and he was only scratched (ok...). After that, just bathing him in plasma (never got a BFG) until he was mortally wounded, then I made a mistake and delayed my last health pack a bit too long. I was at 40-some percent health when I got hit again by his rocket launcher, and that was it.

I just ran for the stairs in most lower levels, since the Aracs were getting on my nerves and the Arch-Viles were pretty unpleasant... I got one, which was unfortunately between me and the stairs, with an overcharged plasma rifle. But after that I just managed to run to the next level whenever I heard one.

Thanks. I'm not too happy with the guitar as well. I even considered playing the part myself, but gave that up quite fast after trying it out. I'll continue working on it when I've finished my next exam, which will be this friday (I'm studying Computer Science).

A first attempt: I used the original midi-file and simply assigned instruments from different soundfonts to the channels, which I thought sounded fitting. Then I did some editing (reverb, equalizer, volume and stereo adjustments) and you can listen to the result here:http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~smaxein/Runningfromevil.ogg. Consider this a WIP please, and I'd love to get feedback.

A good Running From Evil remix is what I dream about xDDDDD. BTW, would you be interested in doing a few remixes for my new upcomming roguelike? Or anyone else for that matter? All I can award for it tough is Beta access :/.

I won't promise anything, because as I said, that would be my first remix ever. First I'll have to find out if I'm any good at it.
Maybe I should have waited with posting until I actually had something done. :-)

Discussion / Re: doom soundtrack remix album

Hi there, new to the forum.
DoomRL has actually been the reason why I installed a software midi synth (timitidy++) as my standard windows midi driver, and hunted the web for a large and good soundfont. I also just checked Paul's Version of the soundtrack and the Classic Doom files. Paul's sound generally a deal better than what I get, but there are some flaws; Bunny is IMO horrible with most soundfonts and not much better in Paul's mp3, i really prefer what I currently have (http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~smaxein/bunny.ogg, rendered with AirFont340) in that particular case. Also, the compression he applied is quite audible in some places and I think it takes away a bit of the atmosphere.

Now this is coming from someone with virtually no knowlege in music production, but it's something I've wanted to try for quite a while, and I'm going to have quite a bit of free time coming in about 2-3 weeks. So I might try to remix some music from doom, which would by popular demand include "Running from evil" :-)

I can't promise anything, but the worst that can happen is some badly done music hitting the web, which happens so much anyway that noone would notice.

Edit: Well, I was a bit fast on the keyboard there, the Classic Doom Soundtrack definitely sounds better than anything I could whip up. I could still do "Running from Evil", though it remains to be seen if it'd be a good remix. Don't hold your breath ;).
