I found the problem. The new config files only accept lower-case letters. The comment lines in the config file, however, have the available options always displayed in upper case, and until 0.9.9.2 upper case was accepted by the game.

It works now, so all's well.

Hi, I have the same error. However, I'm not making any typos. The game just won't read the config file if I make ANY changes to the game's configuration. Skip the intro? Unhandled exception. Turn off the music? Same thing. Always choose a random name? Ditto.

I'm using Notepad on a Windows XP machine to edit the files, could that be a problem?

I've been trying the new version of DoomRL. Great job. Came across a little snag though.

I was playing an Angel of Darkness game and was in The Mortuary, trying to escape from the Arch-Viles towards the SE corner when I got this message:

Code: [Select]
# An unhandled exception occurred at....
ERangeError : Range Check Error
TLEVEL_VISIBLE, line 407 of dflevel.pas
TBEING_VISIBLE, line 247 of dfbeing.pas
TBEING_RESURRECT, line 837 of dfbeing.pas
TBEING_AISCAN, line 626 of dfbeing.pas
TBEING_ACTION, line 776 of dfbeing.pas
TBEING_CALL, line 788 of dfbeing.pas
TLEVEL_TICK, line 744 of doombase.pas
TDOOM_RUN, line 376 of doombase.pas
main, line 21 of doomrl.pas

The game attempted to create a savegame and said it succeeded, but I haven't tried it yet to find out. Then it dumped me back into WinXP. Hope this helps squash this bug...if it hasn't already been squished.

Requests For Features / Re: Comments from a New Player
« on: May 13, 2007, 07:19 »
Hey there. I thought it would be better to recycle an old thread than to start a new one. I have a couple of questions and comments on the latest version of DoomRL.

# Are there any plans to include the Spider Mastermind and the Spectre (stealth demon)?

# Now that monsters can react to your presence when outside your LOS, how about nerfing them down? 9 times out of 10 I get killed by a monster I cannot see, but obviously can see me because it just fired at me. I hear that there is a 50% chance for a shot you fire outside your LOS will miss, regardless of everything else. Is this implemented for the monsters as well? If not, it should.

# Restricting weapon mods only to advanced weapons is, IMO, not practical. You can't count 100% on getting an advanced weapon of any kind (even though they're found in some of the named levels) except in one of the Challenges, so what use are they? A suggestion would be to allow a single mod on standard weapons, and more on the advanced types.

# Dual-wielding combat knives. I'd love to see this implemented in some way.

# Now that DoomRL includes Arachnotrons, hasn't the Former Human Commando become redundant? I like him, but he's just an Arachnotron with fewer legs. Maybe he should be changed somehow?

What about the Megasphere from Doom II? Supercharges you AND repairs your armour to 100%.

I mean, are they supposed to do this?

I've noticed this many times. Hell Knights and Barons Of Hell pick up stuff like Former Humans do, and if they get weapons they use them against me, even if they're weaker than their Plasma Blasts. They also use useable items if they have them. I've actually seen a Hell Knight use a Phase Device.

*As I used my true name in this particular game, I changed it here.

The thing that bothered me the most was that there was no BFG9000 waiting for me in the Halls of Carnage. I am wondering whether it was destroyed by splash damage from other weapons, even through the walls.

As I had no BFG9000, and only an empty chaingun and the rocket launcher for company, I skipped the Hall Of Skulls. Are there any other special levels besides the ones mentioned here?

I also found no Nukes in this game. No JC-bashing for me, then.

I killed the Cyberdemon in an unusual way. I waited until I saw him, then used a Phase Device, lined myself in a direct line against the Cyberdemon from my new position and fired Rockets non-stop. Surprisingly, I hit with all of them. When the Cyberdemon was close enough to see me again, I used another Phase Device and repeated the process. I killed it just before it could fire a rocket at me.
