First of all, I am perfectly aware of the irony of the name. I originally was going to go for MAD, but I've found MFa to be far superior for this challenge.
There are three reasons this run failed.
1) I never found a double shotgun. That's right, in 19 floors (and most of them cleared) I never found a single double shotgun. That's a good argument for the worthiness of the elephant gun, because it can be used as a replacement if you can't find a double shotty.
2) I foolishly FOOLISHLY foolishly set down my plasma rifle in Hell's Gate in order to pick up the large medkits and the red armor. Inventory management isn't trivial in this challenge, and I should have realized I was missing something... Why is the plasma rifle important you may ask? Because it's a decently reliable way at causing damage to an enemy without knockback. For example, when you're fighting an Archvile or a Mancubus (using the plasma rifle at point blank), or if you're just trying to save shells.
3) My girlfriend. I have never gotten this far on this hazardous challenge, and I had a decent amount of supplies although I really wish I had that plasma rifle. I had cornered an Archvile against that left wall and was combat shotgunning it repeatedly when a demon started creeping in from above. I fired shells at both of them the best I could, and just managed to kill the demon. At this point, my girlfriend started hugging me and saying things. I lost focus, and hit "r." Unfortunately, my health being at 7%, I died. YASD.
I really hope I'm getting better at this challenge and this wasn't just a lucky run.

I'm sure there are a lot of players trying to make the jump from UV to N! I myself haven't played N! in far too long, and was wondering if anyone had any tips? I think a topic to compile N! specific tips is a great idea, if it hasn't already been done before (if so I apologize.)

Argh argh argh! I've struggled for as long as I can remember to complete this challenge. It seems like no matter what I do, it's just not happening.
I thought I'd take a hint from AoMs and start out with TaN to protect my hp pool. Naturally, taking TaN makes me want to run towards MAD, but...
It's not happening, at all. The special levels early on have a lot of good experience to grab before things start to heat up. In this release, Angel of Purity has become a lot more DIFFICULT to run. This is due to the difficulty in being able to fully run Hell's Arena and Chained court, and receiving the awards for both. Fully completing Hell's Arena basically gets rid of the chance of clearing a Chained Court guarded by AM, so the best option for an Angel of Purity char is to clear the first two waves of Hell's Arena, collect a small and large medpack and leave. Then stop by Chained Court, grab chainsaw for full heal and clear that out.
Here's the problem, it takes a lot of shells to clear all of that, and since you can't finish Hell's Arena and collect shells (or use berserk globes to collect shells in Chained Court) MAD seems to be out as far as I'm concerned, because otherwise that was a perfect starting run. Also, while taking TaN is a great way to extend your life in lower difficulties, the big enemies come at you too fast in UV for it to really be of any help.
Argh argh argh. The way I figure, the only builds that'll work through this are MFa, MAD, MCe, and MAC. I'm not sure there are enough shells to clear UV while safely protecting your health. Ammochain sounds theoretically amazing for the late game... if you can pull it off. The problem with any overly defensive game is the ammo consumption... so not sure if Cateye would work.
Well, any thoughts or ideas? Anybody pull this off recently or by some chance have come close during this release?

A few things make this run noteworthy. I found my first nano-pack during this release, and happened to have the ingredients fortuitously lying around in my inventory so I finished off all the basic assemblies. Ammo definitely became a problem later on, as well.
Also... I found the FREAKING DS! I have a pretty good idea of how to wield it... but sadly I couldn't meet the conditions. Was very close though... I still got credit for finding it, although I really shouldn't have imo.
As for the actual challenge... It's very tame in the new release. Tactical boots make this challenge very doable. I remember trying this challenge previously, albeit on UV, but I always ran out of time. After I got the tactcal boots and a few levels in hellrunner, I rarely came close to running out on time. The major difficulty lies in the beginning of the challenge before you have tactical gear / reliable way to break down walls. Rocket launcher is a must to break down those walls and give you quicker access to the map.
That being said, I think I'll try either a Cateye build or an other FireAngel build when going for Quartermaster Diamond. First though, I want to finish on my journey to acquire all the golds.
Angel of Purity is going to be a bitch though.

Decided to go Int 2 and Badass for this run, along with DM for cybie. Cybie is a problem since he can insta-gib, so no matter what build you have you need a strategy to deal with him. Anyway...
This would have been a perfect run, if not for blasted Floor 23, the same floor that killed me my last major run. I got cornered by an Arch-Vile, who brought me down to 30%. I used a large medpack to heal and he attacked me again. It wasn't until I ran out of large medpacks that I realized it didn't matter how many I had because he'd take me down to the same amount of hp every turn. (I thought his flame attack did 11 damage? I had armor that should have blocked 6 damage, plus two levels of TaN.... It ought to only do three damage to me but it was doing 7. Blah.)
Thankfully, I had a Hellwave Pack (which I was saving for Cybie) and it one hit the Arch-Vile. After that... I was out of medpacks and there was no healing in sight. I left the two enemies on that floor and ran away, and apparently the 12 enemies on floor 25, and went straight for cybie and dropped a nuke. I could have taken him with DM, I think... but alas, only a partial victory.
After playing AoHu, I'd like to say that the gap between gold and plat is insane... I don't want to go anywhere near this challenge on N!, especially with how fast the enemies are.
Finally, I won the Untouchable Badge (<500 damage taken total) but I've seen other people win an Untouchable Medal. How does this differ from the Untouchable Badge, what are the requirements for earning an Untouchable Medal? Anybody know?

This would have been a perfect run, if not for blasted Floor 23, the same floor that killed me my last major run. I got cornered by an Arch-Vile, who brought me down to 30%. I used a large medpack to heal and he attacked me again. It wasn't until I ran out of large medpacks that I realized it didn't matter how many I had because he'd take me down to the same amount of hp every turn. (I thought his flame attack did 11 damage? I had armor that should have blocked 6 damage, plus two levels of TaN.... It ought to only do three damage to me but it was doing 7. Blah.)
Thankfully, I had a Hellwave Pack (which I was saving for Cybie) and it one hit the Arch-Vile. After that... I was out of medpacks and there was no healing in sight. I left the two enemies on that floor and ran away, and apparently the 12 enemies on floor 25, and went straight for cybie and dropped a nuke. I could have taken him with DM, I think... but alas, only a partial victory.
After playing AoHu, I'd like to say that the gap between gold and plat is insane... I don't want to go anywhere near this challenge on N!, especially with how fast the enemies are.
Finally, I won the Untouchable Badge (<500 damage taken total) but I've seen other people win an Untouchable Medal. How does this differ from the Untouchable Badge, what are the requirements for earning an Untouchable Medal? Anybody know?

I fight packs of Mancubi and Archviles on the previous level and this is what kills me? Really? I mean REALLY?
After surviving through a Mancubi barrage at close range I was getting pretty cocky, unfortunately that kills you in AoHumanity.
I guess it could be worse. I am proud though to show off the Every Soldier's Medal, it's not quite as easy as it looks to get that.
If people are interested, I may post my strategy and thoughts on AoHu.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.2] Gatekeeper Diamond not functioning

Played through on Angel of Max Carnage on UV, and cleared Hellgate without taking damage as per specifications. I didn't receive Gatekeeper Diamond. Either it's bugged, or it requires it to be played through as a standard game, idk which.
Edit: Guess someone attempted this and it worked... So I dunno. I may have entered the level with more than 100% health and it decayed me and counted as a hit, I'm not sure how "take no damage" is calculated. If anyone knows the mystery behind this please chime in, but I guess I'll test it further.

Attempted a fist run on HMP, found a trigun and nuked a level, but not sure if that would still have counted. Didn't matter since I spawned next to a Vile and Mancubi pack on the next floor.

Requests For Features / Something that has ALWAYS bugged me - Computer map + berserk

I'm not sure if this has severely annoyed anyone else, but it's been a constant bother to me in every incarnation of DoomRL and I'd like to open it up for discussion.
Why, oh why, can't we use the look command to examine things that a computer map has displayed? I understand that in most cases it is moot, everything can be easily identified by knowing the color and symbol of the object. However, what about exotics and uniques? They are all the same color and have to be examined up close. Large healing globes can't be distinguished from berserk packs.
The real kicker, however, is that when under the effects of an envirosuit, berserk, or invulnerability not even the color is available to identify objects. I can understand that it's a very pretty graphical effect and it's true that it adds an extra element to gameplay. I still think it makes little to no sense that you can't distinguish many objects from their similarly shaped counterparts when "under the influence."
With the graphical version of DoomRL somewhere on the horizon, all the objects will have individual tiles and be distinguishable with a computer map anyway. That gameplay advantage alone is a good enough reason to play the tile version over the ASCII version.

Sometimes barrels I'm shooting at or otherwise attacking are invincible. This has happened to me when trying to destroy a barrel after I've spawned, and it also seems that when I push a barrel on top of a corpse the barrel becomes invincible as well. Tested this with fuel barrels a couple of times.

My first N! win (besides Pacifism, but since that seems to be easier on N! than anything else I'm not going to count it.)
The RNG was difficult for most of this game. I've found that playing AoMC on N! benefits from a lot of exp early on, so I was almost full clearing levels, including specials. I never knew Hell's Armory and The Wall could be generated on the same run. Did a stupid run through Hell's Armory (using up my phase devices and all medkits save one) only to find a Minigun which was no better than my modded plasma rifle by the time I found it.
Phaseshift armor was a god send, the ability to move and be able to attack first a good amount of the time helped a lot. Got lucky with an invuln. globe right before Hellgate. Hell was a grueling daunting tiptoe fest since one well placed mancubi or former commando can pretty much kill you outright. It didn't help that almost all of the levels were maze levels, pefect traps for Commandos and Mancubi. The RNG smiled upon me though the last 3-4 floors or so giving me a total of about 4 invulnerability globes. Dlvl24 was awesome, an Invulnerability globe, a supercharge globe, and a Megasphere all spawned next to me and the stairs ^_^. Cybie never was so screwed.
Sadly, didn't have enough phases to clear the Vault, and didn't want to mess up my win by tempting the mortuary or going for anything other than the stairs. No nuke, but still proud of my first real N! win.
(If Revenant's launcher could gib corpses on the floor, it would be the best unique for N! Too bad it doesn't D= )
