Title: Alternative Background Music for DoomRL
Post by: LuckyDee on June 06, 2013, 02:31
Since I am very much into music and curious as to what bands and styles other players like, here's a mental excersize for you: let's say Doom(RL) came without a musical soundtrack, just the option to insert whatever you'd want to listen to. What bands/songs/styles/etc would you add?

Here's a couple of my thoughts:
Tool - Pushit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge5giteZxto)
Rammstein - Du Riechst So Gut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3nUZi8TuQQ)
Millionaire - I'm on a High (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wukLdlDoRY)
Air - Clouds Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A00RKr6pji4)
At The Drive-In - Arcarsenal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA_F7T06aaI)
Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igJAJV-ckIk)

Tool & Air mainly for the atmoshpere of the songs; Rammstein, Millionaire and ATDI for the cojones plus the fact that they have something unique to their sound, and DEP because it's really really twisted (this is one of their 'lite' songs), much like the mindset DoomRL requires.

How bout'chu?

Well, I had turned off the ingame music(as usual) the other day, and was playing some Children of Bodom (on low volume to avoid interfering with critical ingame sounds) in the background. It seemed to fit rather well.

Well, there are certainly some songs that thematically fit really well.

Phobos Base Entry: Sabaton - Primo Victoria (starting with the words "Through the gates of Hell ...")
Hell Arena: Arakain - Gladiator
UnChained Court: Hammerfall - Unchained
The Wall: Guess what ;)
Tower of Babel: Rage - Sent By The Devil
Unholy Cathedral: Slayer - Angel of Death
Lava Pits/Mt.Erebus: Metallica - Fight Fire With Fire
Phobos Anomaly: Gamma Ray - Somewhere out in Space (somehow it fits there :) )
Mortuary/Limbo: Rage - Straight to Hell

I could definitely think of more :).

Well, I could see that for any floor of (Arch)AoRA :-D.

This seems like a pretty legit playlist o.O

How about Dio - Holy Diver on repeat for all 666 floors of AAo666?

Could work. I can see Stratovarius - Infinity as more fitting though. At least for the first level, so you know what you're getting into :).

Another thought for speedruns: Sabaton - Speeder.

Speedruns: Summon - Loud as Hell, Fast as Fuck
AoRA: Suicide Commando - Evacuate (Where's the Exit Remix)
AoB: Daath - Sharpen the Blades

I'll have to check this one out, since I was going to suggest Peter Pan Speedrock's 'We Want Blood' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V6vc2FNqL0) for just that purpose.

Just checked out your link - that one's not bad, either.

How about Behemoth - Slaying the Prophets ov Isa for the Apostle floor?

AoMs - Black Anvil - And You Thought You Knew Pain!
AoMC - Children of Bodom - Triple Corpse Hammerblow
Any Archangel game - Dark Tranquility - Arkhangelsk
Mt. Erebus - Devildriver - The Mountain
The Lava Pits - Disturbed - Inside The Fire
The Mortuary - Dissection - Where Dead Angels Lie
The Wall - Kataklysm - As The Wall Collapses
Upon equipping the Inqusitor's Set for the first time - Kataklysm - Serenity in Fire
Babel - Psychlon Nine - Hymn to the Angels' Descent
AoD - Skyfire - Darkness Descending
Spider's Lair - Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow

Haven't picked mp3 music since graphic version, so no alternate levels.
Rather obvious choices:
Hell Arena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbI8aGagJC4)
Chained Court (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Igs6_d1j4) (because gasoline!)
Spider's Lair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqZNMvIEHhs)
City of Skulls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjHPNPcgn64)
Not-so-obvious ones:
Phobos Base Entry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8YluAMCRT8)
Hell Armory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX-8J72TfSA)
Lava Pits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td-v6vG2Xhs)
And for normal levels there were random instrumental pieces by Malmsteen, John 5 and others. And some Dethklok too.

Now we're getting somewhere with the DoomRL music! Keep 'em coming!

Also, remembered one more. First level of Deimos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALBKFB28E0M) (IIRC that was level 16 back then), to set "things just got real" mood.

I'd probably throw in a rip of the DOOM music anyway. :p

Other than that, I...I'm not really sure what I'd put in. It would definitely be something rock, even if it might be a bit older/tamer than some of what you've posted. No specific examples come to mind. Also, game music like the Battlefield 1942 theme.

But they will, now that the seed's planted. If you come up with anything, please share. 'Tame' doesn't necessarily mean 'unfitting'. See my example of Air, above, or listen to things like Massive Attack, or for example this track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObomwH2ztTM) from Jeff Wayne's 'War of the Worlds' (1978!) (check out the full story here [disc 1] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfuRPP_L3jU) and here [disc 2] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RoPtTEswWM))

Fuck yeah. Sweet stuff, even though it's hardly near the top of my usual playlists. Or on my playlists at all, actually.

Metal never really interested me, but horror/speedcore is just as good, right? :)
I think it's a nice alternative, albeit a little more obscure.

I understand why people may immediately default to metal when people think of Doom though.

Right now I'm playing Ao100 on N! while listening to Nightmares on Wax - Ethnic Majority (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJC8EvEdB5o). Far from being music that I would think of in the context of doom, but the creepy atmosphere fits the game perfectly.

Heh, I just listen to a lot of metal in general, so that's my default for just about anything =P

Ao100 N!, huh? I can usually get to about level 4 or so. Then I start to have difficulty with corpse disposal for hell knights and other bigger things that I can't quite control death locations for - that, or enemies just come from everywhere and I can't make corpses to dispose before I become one =P

Unholy Cathedral
REDALiCE - Abaddon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP0A8WoiyUs)
Yea, "Feel the beats straight from hell"
Well played :P

EDIT: Oh, and by the way... if only it was still the classic 26 level format when the anomaly portal led to hell... this would be SO appropriate for dlvl15.
AC/DC - Highway to Hell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B0PJkS0iyk)

Also "I came from hell to bring you pain with my hardcore".
Electronic music loves their sound bites. :)

Yes, that one. It's probably more fitting for a special level or something. Maybe if Kornel bothered to secretly implement Nazi SS somehow. (Maybe the Apostle is a Nazi officer? Iunno.) I've got enough music and types of music on my computer to conclude that at least some of it might be appropriate for DOOMRL, anyhow; even including a little bit of metal. I've got diverse tastes. :p
