Discussion / Re: Tips for a new player?
« on: November 25, 2007, 18:05 »
Yeah, the Combat Shotgun, Double Shotgun, Plasma Rifle, Pistol, and BFG each have a special reload.

Pistols- Reload both pistols (Requires Dualgunner Trait and, obviously, two Pistols- one in the Weapon slot, and one in the Prepared Weapon slot.)
Combat Shotgun- Refills the magazine completely. Takes more time than usual.
Double Shotgun- Reloads one barrel instead of both. Does less damage, but takes less time.
Plasma Rifle- Overload. Fires the entire magazine dry, then destroys the rifle!
BFG- Overload!. Empties the entire magazine for more splash radius, and +20 damage.

I don't think "Try not to die" would cut it, so here's what worked for me:

If you ever get a Combat Shotgun, don't do the special reload (capital R- completely refills the magazine) unless you're absolutely sure you're in a safe spot. Reloading a gun takes time, and getting shot during that time sucks ass.

In the Angel of Marksmanship challenge game, don't pick up every 10mm ammo pack you find. Just because you can carry 1000 rounds of ammo doesn't mean you have to.

As everyone said, tactics (Tab key) help! Coward tactics improve your ability to dodge, but reduce your chance to hit (unless you're using a Shotgun. Shotguns always hit.) Aggressive tactics improve damage dealt and to hit, but lowers your dodge chance (if you're going this way, invest in the Hellrunner trait.)

Levels in the Ironman trait are a good way to start at first level. You could always use the extra 10 HP!

Same thing with Tough as Nails. Permanent DR 1/TaN level stacks with your armor bonus (...am I playing DoomRL or D&D?)

Use enemies to do some of your work for you! Anything with ranged weapons can accidentally hit their friends, allowing you to finish the job. Make sure you deal the finishing blow, otherwise the enemy gets XP for the kill.

Announcements / Re: Berserk! 0.8.5 (unstable) Released!
« on: November 20, 2007, 12:48 »
Running through it right now! Yay, new Berserk! version! ^_^x

The in-game text refers to your character alternately as "Gatsu" and "Guts". I know they're the same one-maniac-army, but someone else might get confused.

The messages displayed for the unique demons (Ian, AbDa, TurIan, and the others I probably haven't run into yet) should read "You hit [demon's name]!" instead of "You hit the [demon's name]!". Same thing for when they die- use "[demon's name] dies!" instead of "The [demon's name] dies!"

The Ice Devils give a new status effect (Freezing), but i can't really tell any difference while I'm affected by it. Does it affect damage?

Hoe noes, Yetis (or is it the Ice Devils?) create Blizzards! The Blizzards seem like useless sword fodder to me- easily killed in two or three hits.

More to come as I delve further into Endless/Massacre mode.

In Berserk, what knives are better than crossbow bolts is..
He can always REUSE them.
(They have much durability than bolts/arrows)

Just allow picking up thrown knives.
They should not disappear without any reason.

Thrown knives, you should be able to pick them up assuming you miss with them. Guts seems to be a pretty powerful sort, so I'd imagine that whatever he hits with a knife is gonna have it sunk all the way to the hilt.

And let's be honest, Remisa, would you want to waste time ripping an easily replaceable knife out of a bulldemon's skull? =p

Berserk! / Re: Request for Help : Monsters Needed!
« on: January 18, 2007, 16:19 »
Take this with as much a grain of salt as you want- I'm beyond terrible at creating/statting enemies, ever since I first discovered RPG Maker '03. (^_^;

---Monster template---
Name: Succubus

Strength: Poor/Fair
Dexterity: Good
Speed: Fair

Attack: Melee/Special (When she attacks and deals damage to Guts, she regains that much health.)

Special: Can blow Guts a kiss, which draws him towards her (and possibly other monsters!) and (maybe?) lowers his built up rage.

Behavior: When surrounded by a pack of tougher monsters, the succubus is brave- she blows Guts a kiss to draw him near, then she and her friends get to work. However, when she's alone, she hauls ass.

Character: Dark red "S"?
-----------------------

She's kinda intended as a bait type of character- she draws you in so the more powerful monsters can filet you.

I must say, this is quite a nice little after-work stress reliever! (Though I can never survive long enough to pick up the two-handed sword polevault.)

This is my second playthrough- I saw Defilers (and Spores) in the first one, but... this is (slightly) more successful. Not too sure about the Defiler's "dual" ability, though.

I guess "Beast" is a lot easier to put in the game than "Near-useless greatsword fodder." =p

And, Kornel, if you want to honor classic Id... BioMenace Major Stryker Duke Nukem Cosmo! Mystic Towers Monster BASH! Commander Keen =p

(Gyaaah, why can't I remember any classic Id franchises!?)

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 35 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 33 of those were killed.
2 of those were killed by something unknown.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Trait order was TaN/SoG/SoG/DG/DG/TaN

Two Archviles doubleteamed me on level 15!

Incidentally, I must say twin pistols work surprisingly well against Arachnotrons, Hell Knights, and Cacodemons. (And wow, was I lucky to have a Fastload Pistol spawn along the way!)

I had to skip Hell's Arena (no armor, one pistol, three small medkits) and The Wall (no rocket launcher, insufficient cover to reload pistols, reward unusable anyway).

I used Coward tactics up until I took Son of a Gun II, then went pure Aggressive.

Now I'm just wondering what exactly a d5 looks like =p

Bug Reports / Re: Some sounds' volume
« on: December 07, 2006, 20:39 »
Actually, there seem to be a few issues with the sound effects in general.

- Sometimes the chainsaw SFX are muted (so a fight against a Former Human sounds like "nnnnnnnnnhnnhnn pscha nnnnnnhnnhhnnn NNNNNNHNHNNNHHHNNHHHNNN GRrrrrrmmmmppph!" Your transliterations may vary.)
- Sometimes sound effects aren't played at all (sometimes when reloading, sometimes when picking up items.)
- Former Humans (Sergeants/Captains/Commandos) use death screams as their injured sound.
- Doors use the secret panel opening sound instead of the traditional "Ba-whIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR". =(
- I know there was an issue with Arachnotron injury/death screams as well.
- Hell Knights/Barons of Hell use their "alert" sound ("WooOOOOOORRRR~!") as their injured sound.
- The Double Shotgun uses the standard shotgun firing sound. I lieked Doom II's double shotgun firing sound T_T
- Not an issue, but I think unloading a gun should the item pickup sound ("Dun dun") instead of the reloading sound ("Ka-CLICK!")

Surprisingly, alcohol was not involved with this post (^_^;

Kornel: By "scary," do you mean "WHOAAAAAAAAAAA SHIT ARCHVILE" scary, or "Jesus H. he just wimped off 85% of my health in one attack!" scary? =p

28
Average turn duration should be 2.5 seconds- keeps things moving rather quickly (but would, rather unfortunately, lead to characters lasting about three hours T_T)

Igor: For health regeneration at the start of a day, you're topped off if you have 51~100% of your health. Otherwise, you heal to 50% (because Guts's body is too grievously injured to recover properly.)

29
I'm... gonna wisely assume that the center of that blood tornado is Guts. (^_^;

Well, so far, I think the general consensus in regards to improvements for Berserk!RL are (so far):

~ Improved documentation. (I can help on this, so I'm not a total blob of inert matter after all! Yayayay English degree!)
~ More throwing knives!
~ Additional Energy-using moves (I'll list some below.)
~ A body count. (Possibly dark red text in the lower left corner.)

As for the "additional moves," we already have the sprint and the three-square sweep attack. Moves suggested by others (as well as what I can ripof- err, permanently borrow- from the D&D PHB) could be:

~ Charge attack (run forward three squares, knocking enemies out of your path- great for quick escapes!)
~ Fingerzam's powerful blow (expend a lot of willpower to deal massive damage in the given direction)
~ Selric's overhand slash (attack the square in front of you and behind you)
~ Selric's thrust attack (attack two squares in the same direction)
~ Spin slash (attack all eight squares around you, at expense of a lot of willpower)

Also slightly less necessary but still helpful:

~ Pickups (Throwing knives, fairy dust, Triple Crossbow bolts, and Arm Cannon charges.). Just walk on 'em and they're yours.
~ Difficulty levels that buff/debuff enemies (Easy/Normal/Hard are too typical- something like Tough/Tougher/You've *Got* to Be Kidding. =p)

And last, but certainly kinda least:

~ Different gameplay modes (Campaign/Day Count/The Massacre!)

Whoo, these are the thoughts that make me want to learn programming and try to help Kornel out x_X
