Requests For Features / Equip menu tweaks
« on: March 15, 2010, 01:23 »
It would be cool if when I go to the equip menu to change armor or weapons if the menu wouldn't close automatically when I choose which slot I want to equip.

If I already have armor equipped and I want to change it, I have to bring up the menu, select armor, it unequipped my current armor, the menu closes automatically, I have to open the equip menu again, select the armor slot, then select the armor I want to equip. The same for weapons and boots etc.

I find it pretty annoying.

I think it would be better if when you pulled up the equip menu to choose which slot to equip, it should automatically go to the inventory screen, you pick which armor or whatever you are equipping to replace the current one, and the game swaps the one you picked into the equipment slot and your old one gets put into your inventory.

I think this would be a much better way to handle equipping and unequipping items. It would only take 3 steps to complete instead of 5 steps (or 6 steps if your inventory is full) like it takes now .

Discussion / automatic full screen?
« on: March 15, 2010, 01:07 »
I was wondering if there was a way to make DoomRL automatically run in full screen mode on start up. If so, how do I enable it?

I tried looking in the ini file and the properties tab of the exe, but couldn't find anything.

Discussion / What is this? (odd phobos level 2)
« on: March 15, 2010, 00:47 »
I was playing and when I entered level 2, I got this odd open level where I just got surrounded by enemies and barrels and got slaughtered pretty quickly.

I was going to post this in a topic I created a while ago about gamepad support, but it seems to have been locked.

I always thought doomrl would be perfect for playing with a gamepad. I tried joytokey, but was having issues because of the arrow keys and menus for some reason. Anyways, I tried the xpadder program to emulate keyboard commands on a gamepad and it works great.

I can play the game and fully control it with a single logitech precision gamepad. This works better for me since I play on a laptop and lack a 10-key number pad for precise movement. Now I can play with a controller and hook my laptop to my big screen so it's like playing DoomRL on a game console.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else was interested in playing with a gamepad.

Here's a link to a youtube video that explains how to set up xpadder.

Here's a link to the free version.

Xpadder 5.3 is the free version.

This is the only copy I could find. xpadder 5.3 is the last free version.

Discussion / Arrow key observation.
« on: March 14, 2010, 22:35 »
I noticed that the arrow keys used to navigate menus in the game work differently than when they are used to move the player. I noticed this because I was using JoyToKey so I could play the game with a gamepad. I had to remap the 4 movement keys to n, j, [, and ] in the doomrl ini file because mapping the arrow keys doesn't seem to register. I only have this problem with doomrl.

I can map it so I can move with the game pad, but the same keys for movement don't work for navigating the menu's. Only the arrow keys specifically can move in the menus.

Also, when I tried to map the left and right directions to b and m, the game didn't recognize them when I press the keys.

*note* this not a complaint. Just something I noticed and was curious about.

Requests For Features / Armor Shards
« on: October 20, 2009, 00:50 »
It would be cool if there were armor shards that act like the helmets in the original doom. One's that add a little bit more armor protection to the armor you have instead of having to lug around several sets for when your current armor wears out. I know there are levers that repair armor, but I don't seem to encounter them very often.

Requests For Features / Hail to the King trait
« on: October 08, 2009, 10:07 »
I though it would be cool if there was a trait that would let you dual wield a chainsaw and shotgun/double shotgun like Ash in Evil dead. That way, when enemies get close you can hit them with the chainsaw and use the shotgun for ranged without having to switch. Maybe make the reload time on the shotgun a little slower to compensate for having one hand full.

Not sure which traits should be required to get this one. Definitely shottyman, not sure about the other to one that should be required. maybe brute.

Requests For Features / Random music for levels
« on: October 08, 2009, 09:57 »
I think it would be cool if there was an option to make the music for each level change each time you play. After all, most the levels are randomly generated, why not make the music random each time as well?

Requests For Features / Gamepad support?
« on: September 27, 2009, 23:56 »
I was wondering if it was possible to support gamepads on doomrl? I think it would be great since doomrl doesn't require as many commands as other roguelikes. Would just have to make it so the menus can be navigated by using the d-pad instead of typing the letter. I think it would be fun to play this one with a gamepad. Would diagonal movement be possible that way too?

Discussion / Doom: Semper Fidelis
« on: May 03, 2007, 23:51 »
I came across this interesting solo game a while ago. I like the system it's simple and different. Kinda an abstract paper and pencil game. It's based on Doom by Id. I just wanted to share it with others who may not have seen it yet. I'm thinking of expanding on the idea a little to make the game better like making combat different and incorporate more monsters and give the player a few better more meaningful choices.

Requests For Features / drowning in water
« on: January 26, 2007, 12:47 »
Maybe if the player is in the water for too long, he/she could start "drowning" and slowly loosing life. It probably wouldn't come up too often, but it would give levers that flood levels with water a greater purpose and make it more hazardous.

Requests For Features / Save anytime
« on: January 15, 2007, 12:51 »
I think it would be great if the player was allowed to save at anytime they wanted to. Similar to the original. It would be a lot less frustrating when I'm playing a game but something comes up and I have to stop. I would rather be able to just save and leave instead of having to find the exit then save without completely exploring the level. Then load my game and I'm on the next level when I would have liked to finish the one I was on. I think the game would benefit greatly from being able to save anytime like in nethack or rogue.

Requests For Features / backpack
« on: December 15, 2006, 11:40 »
It would be cool if you could make a backpack item that would increase the number of inventory slots you have in the game. Not by much, but maybe by at least 5 more items that you could carry at one time. Or even 3 more.

Requests For Features / Game Menu sound fx
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:43 »
I think it would be cool if you could add the menue sound effects at the begining of the game and when you level up. Like when you press the first button, cycle through the traits and pick them, picking the difficulty, etc. LIke the original doom games you would kind of a clanging sound or something when you cycled through the difficulty levels and such. Also when you selected them. It really isn't a very important feature to the gameplay or anything, but I think it would be kinda cool.

Discussion / mp3 track for intro
« on: December 11, 2006, 01:40 »
WHat track do any of you guys use for the intro track when you use the mp3's for music? In the ini file, the mp3 tracks start at "Music2". So there's no intro music. I haven't tried using any other mp3 for it yet but I was curious what others use.
