Discussion / The official ChaosForge Discord channel
« on: October 24, 2017, 12:40 »
Recently looking at the forum and actually engaging in some communication with current Inquisitorial staff made me realize that:
a) Since I stopped bothering with setting up an IRC client on latest hardware upgrade, my only means of communicating with those fine people is through this boards... and I visit like once every two months or so
b) ...hey, that reminds me there is a bunch of people still lurking on zombified corpse of what once was the official #Chaosforge IRC channel
So I decided to spend all of five minutes of my precious, precious time and thrown us together a barebone Discord channel. I mean, back when JH kickstarter was going on I breached the topic with Kornel, and he said he planned to do it post-KS... but he hasn't done it to date unless I'm mistaken, and I know such things can move at glacial pace here, so I decided to take initiative :P
So come, join and talk. About Jupiter Hell, older ChaosForge games, and other stuff. Or just lurk. Whatever rocks your collective boats. You're welcome. Unless you're a spambot. Invite link (note - I set having verified email on Discord as requirement for talking, just as a minor precaution at any spambots crawling to the link or something): https://discord.gg/P9ZA7hx
PS. For those not in the know Discord is essentially modern-day IRC, only decentralized, new, shiny, and doesn't require a client if you don't want to install one (it can be run in browser).

Thanks for the offer but I'd be a really ill fit for the sort of game you have in mind. I've been built for... simpler... things in mind ;)
Besides I ammoving crawling myself up to some GMing of my own. Planning to see if I can coerce convince some of my friends into playing some old old school megadungeon crawl/exploration game.

Hey Dee, got something for your perusal: Chronicles of the Grim Fist. Obviously being a written campaign journal rather than video series it's a different beast from Force Grey series, but still it's worth a look - the write up of the campaign reads real well and the way their adventuring goes and scope it reaches is amazeballs in my opinion.
Was going to link this much, much earlier but I'm a procrastinating procrastinator that procrastinates, and also things that divert my attention are ma-oooooh, shiny.
*ahem* Anyway I see you're also starting a game of your own. Not my cup of tea what you're planning but all the same I wish you good luck... Game Master

« on: February 28, 2017, 21:22 »Well, like I said before, the main problem I have with D&D is that if you look up just about any thread on just about any forum on it, it's always "MY CHARACTER DEALS MORE DAMAGE THAN YOURS".Might want to look into retroclones of earlier editions of D&D. Less options to min/max there, along with a bit different play ethos (currently reading a campaign journal of a campaign run with ACKS, a retroclone of Basic D&D... players end up running with a small army of henchlings and mercenaries and carving a literal domain for themselves :D)
Screw that. That's not what RPG is about. To be fair it kind of *is*, in a way. After all RPGs evolved from wargaming :P
Edit: Putting jokes aside though your problem probably arises from plenthora of character optimization threads/boards in D&D communities. To this I say: RPGs have numbers. People get attached to their numbers and like to see them grow. This is not wrong, it's kind of natural. Numbers themselves and excitement over them growing aren't the real problem, if anything the real problem is that newer (3e, 4e, possibly 5e though I don't know that one well enough to be sure), give players too much control over them, and too many options to tweak them in small ways (and also made more rigid rules frameworks). People have too much leeway in adjusting the numbers and hence character optimization threads happen. Older editions and their clones should have less of that problem since there is much, much less the player can do to pimp his character out without GM permitting it explicitly. (And before you say anything yes Hackmaster is a negative example here, but Hackmaster was intentionally built as crunchy and fiddly as it is, due to nature of what it represents)

You know, I had a fridge logic moment today at work and came to conclusion that part of the reason for that might be that D&D has this, hmmm, reputation for lack of a better work of a "less roleplaying" system, as opposed to the RP-heavy ones like, for example, anything by White Wolf. What I mean is look at the video you linked - the party there does roleplay their characters, obviously, but to me at least they approach it in a more light-hearted way. They focus on having fun first, "getting into character" second so to say. Which might lead to a different chemistry than other way around.
But maybe it's just me...

Only took a quick glance but this looks like it might be a fun series to watch. The intro was brilliant.
I'm even tempted to pick up D&D. Forsooth!Might be hard to find a DM that lives up to what Matthew Mercer shows there, he's pretty good from what I heard :P

Bug Reports / Re: Chainsword is a blunt weapon!

Not as much item category as create a new item with new ID. Coding in for knife challenges etc. to allow Chainsword would probably be trivial in itself, but the game would need to actually remove the knife you have from inventory and give you a (new item) Chainsword in it's place. As opposed to renaming your knife to Chainsword and changing it's stats which is, as far as I understand, what happens now.
Either way too much work just for one assembly.

To give a serious answer though, Chainsword being an assembly probably inherits Ccombat Knife's sounds. This means you *can* change the sound used to something more fitting (if you can find a fitting sound file that is), but then you'd have the Combat Knife sounding like a Chainsword.
