0.9.9.3 / Re: [M|86%|22|YASD] Beaten in the bowels of Hell
« on: July 25, 2011, 05:27 »
You spent a lot of time shooting arachnotrons with a shotgun at max range. That's not really the best use of your traits (DM, SM) or your weapon ;)
If I were in your place, I would play very aggressively: I would close the distance and only fire at point blank range. There were so many enemies, that only a few of them would get a clear shot at you - most would either miss or hurt each other.
Better luck next time.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------
Before him 60 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
37 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
2 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 4 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 16 souls claim to have killed him...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
13 killed the bastard and survived.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The early game was quite simple. I lured formers and killed them on door tiles. I never left corpses behind me - after clearing 3-4 rooms the danger level really drops.
I was very lucky to find a Revenant's Launcher on level 3, which I used to destroy imp corpses (they don't pick up items and they die from onevolley from a chaingun - I didn't have the patience to lure them with a pistol). Later on I used it to destroy Hell Knight and Baron corpses (it's hard to time them so that they die on a door tile).
My biggest worry in the early game was the hard version of the Chained Court. My plan was to immediately run to the right, kill the barons and destroy their corpses - it worked perfectly.
The Wall was easy - I created a tunnel near the middle and spammed rockets and shells until everything was dead. A few times a Baron would get right in my face, but shotty + max damage = ridiculous knockback.
In the Halls of Carnage I sprinted to the stairs and waited until the lava killed everything (wow it moves fast).
I killed everything and destroyed all corpses until level 16. Just as I was going to enter the UC to get Longinus Diamond, I realized I didn't have any melee weapons :( At this point I abandoned the YAAM attempt and concentrated on finishing the game in one piece.
The Vaults were really easy - I fired a combat shotty around a corner to lure Viles and finished them off with the plasma rifle. After all of the Viles were dead I just walked right into the middle vault and I killed the remaining Revenants.
I entered the Mortuary with two invulnerability globes running which allowed me to quickly kill 4-5 viles. I also had a blood skull which I used immediately, and a metric fuckton of rockets from the vaults. After my invulnerability ran out, I was at the right side of the level and I started destroying corpses with rockets. After the right side was cleared I spammed plasma into the middle and mopped up with the BFG. I didn't actually use the BFG that much - I fired maybe 3-4 shots total.
After the Mortuary I spawned near the down stairs, I used a homing phase device on level 24 and I killed the Cyberdemon with the plasma rifle (3xHR,DM,MAc = easy).
Fun fact #1: Arch-Vile corpses don't respawn, or respawn veeery slowly. (Can someone confirm this? Maybe it was my speed, but I don't recall a single Arch-Vile rising from the dead.)
Fun fact #2: After completing the Mortuary, reviving doesn't stop like in the Hell's Arena.
From now on, aiming for YAAM is my go-to tactic on Nightmare. It fits perfectly with my style of play. We'll see how it works on other challenges.

Modding / Re: HereticRL demo
« on: July 22, 2011, 23:02 »
It doesn't work on Linux, because paths on Linux are case sensitive. I had to rename all files in the sound directory to match those in heretic_sound.lua to get it to run. Also, the command to run the mod on Linux should contain slashes (/) not backslashes (\).
I really like the level design - especially the double-wide corridors. It feels like a finished game, not a demo ;)
Could you make gargoyle & warrior projectiles move a little faster? A few times I moved while a projectile was still in the air, which allowed them to take free shots at me.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.3] Volume is muted when too many sounds play at once (includes a fix).
« on: July 21, 2011, 17:29 »
I'm running DoomRL 0.9.9.3 on GNU/Linux (with sound). As far as I know, this bug does not happen on Windnows.
When DoomRL tries to play many sounds at once (e.g. when a lot of enemies are injured by a shotgun blast) the sound is either completely muted or cuts off abruptly. This makes radar shooting very hard on crowded levels and is generally very annoying (especially in the City of Skulls).
To see this in action download sound_test.lua into your DoomRL directory and run:
There are a few problems:
This is what happens on the test level:
The fix is easy:
Until this bug is fixed, you can use a small program to fix these issues. There is no guarantee that it will work, so backup your data before running it and don't whine if it formats your hard drive ;)
Download sound_fix.so into your DoomRL folder and run DoomRL like this:
If you want to compile sound_fix.so from source, download sound_fix.tar.gz, unpack it and run `make' in the created directory - this will produce the sound_fix.so file (make sure you have g++, SDL and SDL_mixer development packages installed).
I hope this helps.
Code: [Select]
./doomrl -sandbox sound_test.lua
You will be placed into an empty level with 50 barons just out of your vision range. Fire a few shots to the right in quick succession and most (if not all) pain sounds will be muted. There are a few problems:
- DoomRL doesn't allocate enough channels. SDL_mixer only allocates 8 by default, which is not enough when you have 20-30 enemies making sounds.
- DoomRL doesn't check the return value of Mix_PlayChannel() (when SDL_mixer runs out of channels, it returns -1). It then passes this value to Mix_Volume() and Mix_SetPanning(). Calling Mix_Volume(-1, ...) sets the volume of ALL channels.
This is what happens on the test level:
- 50 barons are injured by a shotgun blast.
- DoomRL tries to play 50 pain sounds at once and runs out of channels (only the first 8 are played).
- One baron far to the right makes another sound (a howl or something).
- DoomRL tries to play this sound, but it's too far to the right (volume=0) and there are no free channels (channel=-1), so it calls Mix_Volume(-1, 0) which mutes all sounds.
The fix is easy:
- Check the return value of Mix_PlayChannel() and don't call Mix_Volume()/Mix_SetPanning() if it's -1.
- After Mix_OpenAudio() call Mix_AllocateChannels() with a reasonable amount of channels (e.g. 100, maybe make it an option in the configuration file).
- Don't call Mix_PlayChannel() if you're going to set the volume to 0 afterwards (this will save some channels).
Until this bug is fixed, you can use a small program to fix these issues. There is no guarantee that it will work, so backup your data before running it and don't whine if it formats your hard drive ;)
Download sound_fix.so into your DoomRL folder and run DoomRL like this:
Code: [Select]
LD_PRELOAD=./sound_fix.so ./doomrl
or like this:Code: [Select]
export LD_PRELOAD=./sound_fix.so
./doomrl
If you want to compile sound_fix.so from source, download sound_fix.tar.gz, unpack it and run `make' in the created directory - this will produce the sound_fix.so file (make sure you have g++, SDL and SDL_mixer development packages installed).
I hope this helps.

Awesome videos, as always. I can't wait to see you fight shambler. Do you have a reliable strategy to deal with him? For some reason I always have trouble killing him.
Your wall strategy is a little risky and I think it relies too heavily on the tactical armor/boots combo. I used to do it your way, but I lost quite a few guys when an explosion knocked me to the left (which is pretty much an insta-death on higher difficulties).
Maybe I'm just impatient (or I suck :P), but I've found that an alternative strategy works better for me (especially if my speed sucks *cough*AoHu*cough*).

0.9.9.3 / Re: [M|AoHu|95%|YAVP] Thomas's Medal / Heroic Platinum
« on: June 26, 2011, 05:20 »Really? [...] I seem to recall getting the 9th level halfway through UCYes, I got to level 9 in the UC, but I really wanted MVm before I hit the first demon. I was afraid that if I had to use medpacks while fighting demons, my berserk would run out (I was really paranoid at that point).
I really assumed this would be harder (Spider's Lair spawned over the Vaults in my run) but I never practice the vaults, so I'm surprised to hear that you can just corner shoot everything.I almost never took any damage in the Vaults. Barons would be lured by stuff dropped by other dead barons, and if I ran in place long enough, the Arachnotrons would come too (sometimes I just rushed in with the LS after the barons were dead).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This isn't true. In my run I got hit while I was on 100% HP with Iro 4 and about 9 armour (TaN 3 + Modified Red Armour) and it left me with about 20% HP. Iro 4 puts you on 18 HP, and his average damage is 21 (max is 36) so if I went in there with 200% HP even a really unlucky roll wouldn't've killed me.You are correct, I didn't account for 200% hp. But I think my original point still stands - he will get you down to 100% eventually, and then all it takes is one rocket to kill you.
Theory: 36 max damage - 7 (angelic) - 3 (TaNx3) = 26 max damage > 18 hp (Irox4)
Practice:
You use a large med-pack. You feel fully healed. The Cyberdemon fires! You
are hit! Your Angelic Armor is damaged! You die!... Press <Enter>...
And my armor ended up like this (I'm pretty sure it was at 7/7 before the hit, but who knows):
[a] [ Armor ] Angelic Armor [3/7] (29%)

I promise this is my last AoHu mortem (at least in this version :>).
I skipped levels 22 and 24 (thanks GH) so no YAAM,
Special levels:
- UC - purely luck based. Kill demons and hope for a berserk. I didn't get it in 3 attemps out of 18 that reached UC. If you kill everything before UC, you'll be level 8.
- Vaults - super easy with a tactical shotgun and around 100-150 shells. Just corner-shoot everything.
- Mortuary - hard if you're not berserked, medium-hard if you are. In this run I had two hatred skulls and all 5 Arch-Viles spawned clustered on the right. With Irox3, TaNx3 and a red armor (P) I was taking <10% damage from Viles while berserked.
- Lava Pits - easy. I used the second hatred skull before exiting the Mortuary and I killed most things with the LS. The boss was killed with the missile launcher and I think I didn't get hit once.
- Cyberdemon - almost impossible without a nuke ;).
If my calculations are correct, he can kill you in one turn even if you have [7/7] armor, 200% hp and maxxed Iro/TaN.He killed me once (100%-0) so this run I played it safe (thanks GH)
This is dedication (or lack of skill :P):

-- General ---------------------------------------------------
Before him 293 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
215 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
6 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 18 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 53 souls claim to have killed him...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
50 killed the bastard and survived.

Thomas's medal is cursed...
Level 23 had an armed nuke, so I picked up the pace... and I blew myself up with the missile launcher (someone should really fix this bug where the projectile path suddenly switches to a wall).
Highlights:
- AoD killed by throwing a bulk modded knife (took around 1.5h). I was afraid I was going to miss a lot, but I missed maybe 5 times total (I guess EE applies to thrown weapons)
- Mortuary cleared without taking damage: two skulls, ~600 cells, two BFGs, 2xInt, obvious strategy :P
- Armory, Wall, Hellgate, Skulls & Vaults cleared without taking damage
- Spiders cleared with minimal damage (I sidestepped one volley and it took me down to 40%).

Awesome videos. Even though I don't always learn anything new, I find that I play a lot more carefully after watching them, so big thanks.
Also, that UV AoMr arena run was hilarious:
