Requests For Features / Re: The Rocket Launcher.

The problem with rocket launchers is that they're weak, slow, inaccurate, destroy items and have no natural synergy amongst any of the traits -- and to top it off their ammo doesn't stack well at all.  I never use them in serious combat situations due to the above.  I view the launcher as solely a means of corpse disposal.

What I want to know is how you do not simply die fighting the Agony Elemental.  I'm picturing a sea of lost souls dozens deep coming for you.

The shotgun:  the perfect weapon.  The only thing to say about the early game is that I've finally mastered Nightmare! arena and Chained Court.  I like getting Hellrunner x2 as my first two traits regardless of what build I'm going for, and Dodgemaster is endlessly helpful for baiting enemies as well as making basically immune to Arena damage.  I just gather all the monsters together at one pillar and dance around until a Caco gibs them.  The Chained Court involves, again, dancing in front of Barons until they wander too close to the lava, at which point I shotgun them in.  The Arena Master dies to normal corner shooting.

I scored a lucky Invulnerability globe near the stairs to the Anomaly, which made it easy to clear the first Ambush.  The Brothers simply cannot stand up against a double shotgun.  Fun times.  With Dodgemaster the Cyberdemon couldn't land a hit, naturally.

I was feeling cocky and there was yet another conveniently placed Invuln globe so I dived into the Mortuary.   I managed to kill all the Viles and snag the nuclear BFG, but without method of gibbing corpses I had to retreat.  I was a little concerned that this would leave enough enemies alive to put me below 80%, but as you can see it didn't actually matter.

JC was actually killed by friendly fire.  Hell's a rough place.

I think this has to be my favorite build aside from pure melee (which feels so overpowered that it strips the fun right out of the game).  A speed-equipped Scout with Shottyhead moves and fires four times a second, which is just a real problem for enemies to deal with.  Also, in addition to making it very easy to never take damage ever, Intuition + Shotgun knockback is amazing for corpse elimination.

Nope, I play on Nightmare exclusively now, so DoomRL doesn't get exited at all.  You're right about the Platinum -- I guess I just assumed I had it.  I also have no idea what actually triggered this bug... I only noticed when I looked at my scoreboard after getting Centurial Diamond.

This one wasn't too hard.  After a few attempts to do the Unholy Cathedral for a melee game I just reverted to my usual intuition/shotgun scout.  Nothing really special to say here... you might ask me, "why not Shottyhead?" and the answer was I didn't think I'd have enough traits in time at level 7.  I really dislike Juggler, anyway.  Its only use is when you lose control of combat... and really, that should never happen.   

Another question might be "How did you intend to beat JC without Dodgemaster?" and the answer here is I didn't.  Even if I had an opportunity to nuke the Mastermind I was going to pass... which turned out to be moot, so, meh. 

The game threw a Pain Elemental cave at me.  Best level ever.

I can't see myself ever doing a Scavenger build... the trait locks just really gimp the potential of any character who takes it.  Moreover, I think Scavenger is even *less* useful on Ao100 in 0.9.9.6 compared to 0.9.9.5.  My last run I got 2 nanos, 2 firestorms, 2 onyxs, and a sniper.  If I had taken Scavenger I would have felt pretty stupid.  In addition, many assemblies have been reworked to require fewer rare mods. 

Honestly, the only real use for a "tons more mods" perk is dualgunning pistols when you need twice the mods to for twice the weapons... but with dualgunner explicitly banned this just leaves the trait without a natural build.

Intuition just has to be removed.  In the hands of a skilled player it is total immunity to damage -- fun for badges, bad for the game.  An alternate idea is to reduce it to vision-area only, meaning you can see behind walls but not spot enemies beyond sight range.

Eh, honestly I think the system is just married too tightly to the three-locks-per-master pattern.  Sure, some masters need to have three locks to prevent them from being overpowered, but who are we kidding when we have Ammochain lock SoG?

I'm personally of the opinion that the most powerful builds avoid masters entirely... master traits tend to be cute little perks while the real power of a character comes from the basic traits and in a few cases from the advanced traits.  Is this what we want?  Dunno.  I would like to see the General Masters category rejiggered to have no trait locks, but only slight bonuses -- perhaps enhancements on the starting class perks.

So seeing as how DoomRL has a nice Berserk subtext I thought it'd be fun to play a Guts-themed runthrough.  Obviously, this meant a melee-focused game though I allowed a shotgun to take the place of Guts' Cannon Arm.  This gun then evolved into a rocket launcher, and from there into the Biggest Fucking Gun which I can't help but think is appropriate.  Other than that Guts is obviously a Marine, and just as obviously not a Vampire.  I found an onyx armor in the teens which I used to assemble power-modded cerberus onyx armor, which was much, much, much better than even the unique armors I found.  I found two nano packs burned one for grav boots (of course), and was saving the other in case I could assemble some interesting cybernano armor... but honestly, I doubt anything could top cerberus onyx [2]. 

The low point the game came around level sixty when I found the Dragonslayer... and couldn't pick it up.  Apparently my Guts runthrough was not impressing gravity.  Didn't it see what my name was?  I have no idea what else to say about this except that if this character can't pick up Dragonslayer, nobody can.  I don't even.

Which brings me to my next point:  Dragonslayer wasn't needed as this build is completely, utterly, totally overpowered.  Once I got my hands on modded cerberus armor around level thirty every subsequent level and encounter was identical, and towards the end more than a little boring.  See pack:  charge pack:  berserk:  mass murder.  I don't think I ever shot the BiggestFG in earnest -- only while screwing around.  95% resist of all the common late-game damage (with 5 armor on top) made it impossible for me to die.  I even let myself get down to ~12% health a couple times just to see what it was like.  I went entire levels without looking at my health while being constantly shot by Mancubi, Revenants, and Viles.  It got real dull.

Anyway, as for other thoughts I learned pretty quickly that level five was the make-or-break point for this character.  I could pass the first four levels pretty consistently, but around ~75% of the time level five would come up with a way to just completely screw me, like flanking me with imp-and-knight spawns or tossing a knight-filled maze where it was real hard to dispose of corpses.  After level 10 the game stabilized as, oddly enough, it was much easier to fight a small number of hard enemies than a large number of weak ones, again mostly due to corpse disposal.  After that, it was fairly smooth until level thirty or so at which point I either had onyx armor or I did not.  If I did, the game continued.  If I did not, I would slowly run out of medkits. 

I dunno, fun enough.  I do not think I will be attempting this again.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.6G Windows] Lost AoMr Badges

Awhile ago I completed AoMr on Nightmare to receive the Marksman Diamond Badge. 

Today I completed Ao100 on Nightmare to receive the Centurial Diamond Badge... but notice that my Marksman Diamond is now missing, as well as the Silver, Gold, and Platinum.  The Bronze Badge is still credited, and on the Player Info (Challenges) page it still shows I have one standard win on AoMr Nightmare.

I've restarted the game seeing if it will read the wad file better, but it does not.  I am very sad.

The first Revenant is the hardest -- it usually comes at a time when your bullets do basically nothing to it.  All I can do is bait it into a good position and corner shoot it for awhile, then shoot it at melee while it punches me down.  Luckily the Revenant's melee attack is fairly weak, and the AI doesn't back off so it can use its rockets (would be a nice tweak for Nightmare Revanants, though). 

Later, once you get the 5th level of SoG Revenants die just like anything else.  You shoot them, they fall, you move on.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.5| Win7] Crash at end of game.

I was playing through a UV Angel of Shotgunnery and made it down to JC.  I successfully killed him... and then it crashed.  The game saved, and when I restarted the program I was able to re-attempt Hell Fortress.  Unfortunately, I did not have sufficient items to defeat JC a second time so I was unable to determine if the bug is repeatable.
