The Armory gave me a sniper mod. I thought about saving it for a plasmatic assault shotgun later but stuck it to a chaingun for safe keeping. Later on, though, disassembling some exotic (perhaps a blaster) gave me a second S mod, and I've never had two in one game before, so I knew I had to exploit that. I stuck them both on the nuclear plasma rifle and picked up Int2 so I could murder every magenta 'X' with efficiency.

I decided to ruin my 100% kill rate by entering the vaults, even though I knew I'd only be able to clear the outer two. It definitely paid off - I found the GCB, which I dismantled for an onyx mod (don't ask me how that works). The onyx went towards a pair of lava boots, always helpful in AoI.

I had lots of cells saved up by the time I hit the mortuary so I was able to clear it pretty easily with my nuclear sniper rifle, burst plasma and BFG.

A nuke pickup spawned on level 22 or so. If it hadn't been for Klear's recent post about nuking himself in AoI, I would have done the same thing. I was idly thinking about whether or not I should bring it along and try for a full win when I remembered with a start: oh yeah, that's not such a good idea.

I'm not sure exactly what happened with me and the mastermind. I went in equipping my sniper rifle, thinking that I might be able to do some damage to that big X from outside its attack range. When I got closer, the X was behind one of those boxy obstructions so I attacked it from a cornershooting position. It quickly caught up to me, though, which I somehow hadn't been expecting. When it closed to melee range I somehow decided that I'd be better off running away in my blue armor instead of just tanking its melee attacks in my phaseshift. Even worse, I got shot to death on a turn when I ran backwards from the mastermind instead of dodging to the side.

Out of curiosity, how do most players get Mastermind's Brain? I don't reach her too often so I haven't had enough opportunities to practice.

The next challenge on my to-do list is Angel of Impatience. I figured I'd use rapid-fire Scavenger builds for this one, partly because the extra challenge is forcing me to play carefully (active, passive and tactical defence are all quite weak while this build gets going) and also because I wanted to see if the Scavenger trait could get around the tricky restrictions on mod use that this challenge imposes. The answer: yes! If you find a mod before you have a use for it, slap it on a random pistol that's lying around and just dismantle the weapon later. For the curious, once you've taken apart a modded weapon in AoI, the mod remains in your inventory, where it can be used at your leisure. No time to waste? We'll see about that.

In this particular game, I found a plasma rifle in a vault on the first level of Phobos. This was a great safety net for the first few levels and helped me get the Hell Arena Key badge, something I almost never earn thanks to my careless playstyle. I killed the Arena Master by chainfiring the rifle, which is just as turn-efficient as rocket-jumping into his face and chainsawing him, while considerably less risky. Side note: I was astounded to find out the first time I got this far that you can't even pick up the Arena Master's staff on this challenge, which makes the vaults impossible to complete (since you can't carry phases either). The mods and XP still make CC+ worth doing, but I'm less than thrilled.

The wall was quite doable thanks to a shell box I'd found a floor or two above, but I was careful to gib all corpses as they dropped since a slowpoke character like this with no portable health is very vulnerable here. This is usually where I drop the rocket launcher from Hell's Arena but I saved it so I could rocket-jump out of the demon horde on Phobos Anomaly. I usually forget about that alt-fire but it's surprisingly effective in the right circumstances.

The lab cache in Hell's Armory had an onyx mod, which is a great find in this challenge. Even though you can't slap it on a weapon and use it later with Scavenger, an easy pair of lava boots is great when you can't carry envirosuits around. This also let me grab the supercharge from behind the lab - a little treasure I only recently discovered.

City of Skulls was the beginning of the end. I stupidly got nearly-surrounded by the agony elemental's spawn, and in retrospect I should have rocket-jumped away to save the majority of my HP. I optimistically used the blood skull he dropped hoping to get a few HP back, but, of course, nothing happened. The next level after that was an arachnotron cave with no healing items except for a single health globe, and the stairs to Spider's Lair. I was just walking around the level, collecting scraps of ammo and thinking about my disturbingly low chance of survival no matter which stairs I took, when I accidentally walked into one completely isolated lava tile, my lava boots stowed safely in my bag.

Here's a quick one. Playing Max Carnage, I descended to depth 4. I found myself surrounded on three sides by demons, a shotgun guy behind some barrels, and a pain elemental and his pre-spawned souls. After some awkward maneuvering to keep the shotgun guy from blowing up the barrels in my face (I couldn't kill him as the barrels were in the way) I was overcome by the lost souls. My mistake was not equipping the blue armor, which would have made the lost souls much more survivable.

I'm posting this just because the gods of DoomRL have clearly judged me as wanting. I am not destined to be their champion. A minigun and a powermod in a depth 2 vault, in AoMC, is something I will have to earn.

I don't know that there's anything to say about this mortem, really. I seem to be a middle-tier sort of player, where there's no need for others to give me helpful advice but I also have no truly impressive achievements to my name. Eh, whatever. Just look at what I found in the armory and feel jealous.

Angel of Light Travel was the next challenge on my list. I figured I'd play a scout to make the absolute most of the challenge's speed boost, and play a melee character to avoid ammo problems.

I got whizkid (2) as early as possible with the idea that I could stick mods onto my gear as soon as I'd find them and avoid having to carry them around. In practice that worked pretty well, though I never found enough tech mods (my phaseshift boots were supposed to be fireproof). One of those tech mods was wasted on a fireproof armor which I made out of habit, not considering the negative melee resistance. I idly let that armor get destroyed and made a red power armor instead. A waste of a nano mod? Perhaps, but I needed something durable and multi-purpose to replace the three highly-specialized armours I'd be carrying around in any other game.

I wasn't initially expecting to get Conquerer but the level with the stairs to the wall spawned a rocket launcher and two rocket stacks, which encouraged me to clear the wall and go for the badge.

I built a ripper out of curiosity as much as anything, even though I knew the Scythe would end up replacing it. I turns out the ripper is like a poor man's blademaster. With 'zerk, finesse and other bonuses, the attack time of the ripper gets so low that I was able to clear the City of Skulls mostly in melee even without Blademaster (which I finally unlocked shortly afterward).

JC died this time without giving me even a point of damage. There should be a badge for that.

So, I'm working my way through the challenge games, I guess, and I got a platinum badge and a full win in the process. I wasn't expecting either; I was just playing how I like to play - on UV, tackling as many special levels as possible, and not leaving until the level's name is blue.

The only pistol characters I played before this challenge were sharpshooters, and I've grown fond of the luxury of having whizkid. Four levels' worth of traits seemed like too much to spend, though, so I had to figure out how to live without it. Looking through other Gun Kata mortems, I saw that people are using high power pistols. Dualgunning with two 4-shot pistols is both completely ridiculous yet somehow the only viable strategy that doesn't count on finding exotics so I resigned myself to trying it. It does actually work pretty well, as long as everything dies when it's supposed to.

It helps that I found a blaster pretty early on, which I mostly used to deal with single revenants. (For some reason I decided to ruin its clip size by making it high power as well.) I also found a combat pistol and the mods to make it high-powered on the level before the Mortuary. That's also when I got level 5 SoG, which made me decide just barely in favour of being foolish enough to enter it. I didn't actually think I'd live through it but I was just aching to try. It actually went pretty well. With a movement time of around 0.25 seconds and my firing time at the floor, it was easy to keep chipping away at the horde as this or that monster came into the edge of my vision. Gradually I pushed forward until everything was dead.

This is the first game where I've used intuition. It's nice, but I still don't like shooting at monsters I can't see, especially when I'm working with such a small clip and need my shots to hit.

This is also the first time I've fought JC properly (instead of nuking him). The boss fight actually reminded me of the cyberdemon fight at the end of Doom 3. There, you have to charge your soul sphere by killing imps as they pop out of a hole. Here, I shot JC three times and then reloaded by popping one of the lost souls he summoned.

Can anyone tell me: is there a point to the "almost instant" counter-attacks you can make after dodging when firing your pistols only takes 0.1 seconds anyway?

There isn't really anything special about the mortem. I think I just want to talk about Malicious Blades. It really isn't an offensive trait, is it? I found a load of mods this game and was able to make what I consider to be the ultimate pair of blades: two piercing combat knives (4d6) (B). (You have to add the P mod before the A or else they'll be 4d5.) Even with the doubled brute damage bonus (from having two attacks every turn) my DPS was still the same as when I just used the Longinus spear, and lower than when I used the ripper. The only reason to take MMB right now is for the passive resistances. I think I'd be a lot more excited about Malicious Blades if the trait description read like this:

"Knives, knives, knives! You can now attack with a blade in your off hand at the same time as any other melee attack! You also parry 75% melee damage and deflect 50% bullet and shrapnel damage!"

Powerful? Yes, but other melee masters will still do more raw damage in most cases thanks to their easy access to berserk. Also, note that I'm willing to give up fire resistance for this.

Army of the Dead is like a sub-challenge on top of the Angel of Shotgunnery challenge. I'm used to loading everything with mods and focusing on active defence traits, so it took some lateral thinking to make the most of basic assemblies and passive defence. I think buying berserker was a good move; I didn't know that when you take a big hit with berserker, the berserk resistance kicks in before damage is calculated. Going berserk and taking just one damage when a rocket hits you makes the cyberdemon a joke. The ranks of ironman that I got at the end might actually have been detrimental, since higher max health means berserker kicks in less often.

The first part of the game didn't feel too different than normal, as I always tend to go pretty heavy on the shotguns. Things started to change with chained court - I had to trap the arena master against a wall and chip away at him with a double shotgun while 'zerked. Phobos anomaly went well as I found an invulnerability sphere close to the stairs to it. I got lucky and was able to corner shoot the bruiser brothers without taking damage even after invulnerability wore off.

In Deimos, I left the medical powerarmor where it spawned as I've just never found a good use for it. I mostly used tactical armour and common armours instead. I found an onyx armour pack in the Armory which I saved for lava boots so I'd have more route options in hell levels. I beat Halls of Carnage because I knew it would be easy - same goes for City of Skulls, which spawned a hatred skull. An invulnerability sphere spawned close to the stairs to the Spider's Lair so I decided to tackle that too, though it got scary after the sphere ran out. Luckily, a combat shotgun with MAD does a decent amount of damage even beyond sight range, so I radar-shot my way to victory.

I was foolish enough to enter the mortuary. I used the hatred skull and a fire skull that I got from City of Skulls pretty much right away. Even while 'zerked I burned through every red armour and supercharge in the right half of the level, and when my 'zerk ran out on my way back to the left side I started to worry. Luckily, it seemed that I'd already managed to kill every vile in my all-consuming rage, so I just had to radar- and corner-shoot from the centre structure until everything was properly dead. The damage was done, though - I only had a stack and a half of shells left, which left me on a pretty tight schedule for the rest of the game. For some reason I went into the lava pits anyway, and wasted even more shells killing most monsters from out of sight range. I only had about thirty shells left leaving that level, so I knew that my one chance left was to nuke the last level of hell, wasting a nuke and lava element I was thinking about spending elsewhere, and then spend those last shells on the mastermind. I equipped the shielded armour and lured the mastermind into melee range so I could chip her health away with point-blank double shotgun blasts while she feebly scratched me. She died. The end!

After about a million failed experiments with pistol builds on different challenges and difficulties, I finally won something. The thread title is a crude onomatopoeic rendering of the soundtrack of this run: chipping away at yet another archvile with an energy pistol.

My strategy is to never plan on getting exotics/uniques, but to take advantage of them once they do show up. And man, did they show up. Finding the lava armor on level 20 won the game for me right then and there - it's such an amazing piece of gear that I was able to carelessly tank as much damage as I wanted afterwards. It also helps that I found an onyx armor pack early on. I made a pair of lava boots to help charge my armor, and I ended up wearing them for most of the game. I also made tactical and antigrav boots, but they mostly sat in my pack as it gets annoying having to constantly switch to protective boots in the lava-jammed hell levels.

Even with all the pistol builds I've been playing lately I've still never once unlocked "dualgunner." Sharpshooters all the way! MSs just seems like a better trait to me - it's more accurate, more ammo efficient, and you spend less time reloading. Plus, you get to experiment with oddball pistol assemblies without worrying about whether your pistols match. I started off with a regular T-modded pistol until I was finally able to find enough B mods to turn it into a storm bolter. This is, as far as I know, the best pistol you can get without any exotic drops, and it served me well through most of the game. Once I found a combat pistol I turned it into an energy pistol, so that I'd be able to make good use of more than just one ammo type. This turned out to be very wise as there were occasional dry spells where bullets or cells wouldn't spawn. I found a second combat pistol fairly late in the game and decided to just mod it up. Overall, the P3 combat pistol was stronger than the energy pistol, but it took 3 shots to kill a revenant where the energy pistol only took 2. I was hoping to find a second sniper mod so I could play around with killing viles from across the map but only one ever turned up, not that I can really complain.

For shotguns, I went from a plain shotty to a lightly modded combat shotgun to a heavily modded assault shotgun. I finally dropped the latter when I found the Jackhammer, which I mostly just kept as a souvenir (though I did bust it out in a few nightmare demon caves). For rocket launchers, I went from a plain RL to a lightly modded missile launcher, which I eventually dropped when I had the idea of making a nanomanufacture napalm launcher. I was very happy to find the second nano pack I needed. A nanomachic napalm launcher is definitely one of the more ridiculous things you can assemble in this game, and since I already had lava boots I could blanket entire levels in lava without any real consequence. I also wanted to see if I could make a nuclear biggest fucking gun but no F mods ever spawned (though I easily could have destroyed a few with the aforementioned napalm launcher).

I've read that shotgun builds are supposed to be hard, since the supply of shells in hell is a touch low, so this game felt way too easy. The only thing that almost killed me was overconfidence. I got a bit closer to death than I should have a couple of times just by running and gunning without watching my health. The mastermind also almost did me in - I was pretty sure going into the fight that it deals bullet damage - but the only reason it was able to hit me at all is because I just stood out in the open while raining damage on it. It's just pretty hard to feel threatened when your action speeds are all hovering around 0.20 seconds.

It helps that I wasn't depending solely on shells to do damage - I was making full use of all the rockets and cells I found (most of the latter got funnelled back out through a plasma shotgun). It also helps that the requirement traits for Shottyhead are all extremely useful in general. Juggler, finesse, reloader and hellrunner all serve to keep you alive. As a point of contrast, I've also been attempting sharpshooter builds lately. Eagle eye is significantly less important after the first point you put into it, and son of a gun is useless without a good pistol. This being the case, none of my sharpshooters have lived long enough to earn the master.

Back to the mortem: I skipped the Cathedral as I didn't bother to invest in brute, and I skipped the lava pits as no envirosuits were ever generated and I didn't feel like wading through lava without one. Also, I have no idea where I missed that one kill.

I was goofing around in Angel of Pacifist today, HNTR difficulty, and the game crashed several times for me when I died in the late game. Looking through my mortems, the farthest that I got without the game crashing when I died was Deimos level 1. The last crash in the log posted below occurred at the instant of being killed by a lost soul on JC's level (shoulda packed another nuke). DoomRL attempted to save my game after each crash but the saves were corrupted.

Requests For Features / Small change request for Juggler

When I started playing (which was only about a week ago, I guess) I didn't know what quickkeys were, or I didn't think I should bother to use them, so the only benefit I got from juggler was the instant swapping with a prepared weapon. Now I realize that you can use juggler to instantly swap to any weapon from your inventory, as long as you have a quickkey bound to it. The problem that I have with this is that to get the full benefit of juggler, once you start using assemblies and uniques that don't have a quickkey by default, you have to save your game and edit the quickkeys configuration file to assign keys to your new weapons. I feel that the full benefits of juggler should be accessible from within the game itself. How about we just change juggler's functionality to, "You can now swap your weapons or equip any weapon from the inventory instantly," as this is effectively what the trait already does?

Or, if that seems overpowered when it's written out like this, how about "You can now swap your weapons instantly and equip weapons from the inventory in 0.5 seconds?" I think this would be interesting, as then there's still a major benefit to having a sidearm in your prepared slot rather than in the inventory, and the player then has to consider whether it's more important to equip a second weapon (for faster swapping) or ammo (for faster reloading).
