Last week I found myself thinking about the Angel of Marksmanship challenge of DoomRL and wondered if I could capture the feel of it in the renders I do in my spare time.
These are the results of my attempt:

He's heard the enemy approaching from behind, and wondered, were there enough rounds loaded in his sidearms?

Almost the same as the first image, but look at the sidearms...

Hope they are well received by the DoomRL community.
There's a great utility out there called dropbox that lets you download a small application to drag and drop your files to an internet hosting site (after you create an account).
Their program even includes a "Public" folder, which you can use to automatically generate links to the items you're hosting.
When you sign up, you get 2 gigs of storage. If you wanted to join and get an extra 250MB, you could use this link (http://db.tt/fgAmMmk). Yes, it would also give me free storage as well. It's just that awesome. ;)
P.S. If you prefer, you could just use it online, but the desktop client is just so simple to use.
Wow. That's...wow. Great work! Great atmosphere, great angle, and the lighting/contrast lets you see exactly what you want to see.
Can't really figure it out: what's the green orb in front of the marine?
Shinji, do you do only composition, or also modelling?
Haha, epic. :Dwhich image were you calling epic i'd like to know, and thanks for the statement.
LOL yes, that's pretty much what those barrel levels can look like.i know. i got this idea at work, and i couldn't even get to sleep until i created it that night with work the next morning. it kept me up till 3+ in the morn and i had less then 3-4 hours of sleep as a result so i hope every one likes it.
I don't know if he's scratching his head thinking what to do, or he knows so he's reaching for trusty chainsaw. :)
I think my problem with it is that the dude looks nothing like a doomguy :/
Nicely executed, though, so don't let my aesthetics get you down :)
Of course he'd be over there cornershooting all the things. That's basically what he was doing, but the two in the center of the main image are on his side. As it is, to help them with the nasty that is entering from the left side he'll have to move to get a clearer shot.

This one gave me a broad smile on my face.
Hey Shinji_Ikari_9th, it's okay, life catches up sooner or later! =D
Good luck on your finals.
Thanks laptop,
I had the test yesterday, and felt good about how I did. Now all I need is to register for next term witch starts on the 9th of next month.
BTW I had a crazy idea for a render tonight. I was thinking, 'Why does Doomguy need to be out fighting all the time in my shots? Even he needs a break every now and then.'
Maybe I can create a scene that takes place before the game starts? I think I have just the location to use for this idea so I just may go with it.
He looks... badass! =D
And pissed off.Now that I look at him again, I have to agree with you both.
Now that I look at him again, I have to agree with you both.
Thanks.
He looks... badass! =D
Just how much of a badass is he laptop?12 on a scale of 10!
12 on a scale of 10!
Yesterday marked the 8 year aniversery of my late father's passing. Seeing as how he was the one who first got me into Doom, I plan to do a tribute to him in one of my upcoming peaces.Go for it! It's still within the theme, right?
Hope that this is ok with everyone.
Go for it! It's still within the theme, right?
I plan to cast him as a tech character because he worked as a draftsmen in life. Maybe he could have another with him as a team?Make yourself a part of his team. Given that he brought you to Doom, it seems fitting for you to continue with his legacy :).
Make yourself a part of his team. Given that he brought you to Doom, it seems fitting for you to continue with his legacy :).
Yeah! Double-team action against the denizens of hell!
I like the badassery conveyed in this render. =)
my wild guess, there should be something behind the kid, either a demon or corpses, or both, and I'd say he uses radio wrongly, he should seek cover first.
just a heads up that i'm trying to set-up and render another sceen with dad and i.
have to go now because it's 0330 here and i have work at 0830. this idea was not letting me get any shuteye.
night.
Very very nice render! Gives that air of anticipation of you and your dad, cautious anticipation.
I gotta, say, this one's probably my favourite that I've seen so far.
If anything, probably because it's lit well, nothing is blocking anything, the mood is set well, and there's no weirdness...(i.e. the "radio" one the guy's just kinda...flopping his gun around...)
But yeah, nice job!
In the past, I've tried to create renders from the character's point of view. I was just wondering if I should try to do this with Doomguy?Go for it man!
Let me know what you all think.
Go for it man!
The latest render is quite dark -- hard to see what is going on. Maybe some eerie (but appropriate) ambient light might be good.
Nice one, Shinji, yet again :).
One comment, though - the muzzle flash should probably be more centered on the muzzle itself.
And for inspiration - the gun has sights, so perhaps, for some other picture, the DoomGuy could be looking through them? Might look nice :).
I think the muzzle flash isn't really that big "in real life", and yes, it probably should be centred on the muzzle. Actually, since assault weapons also have muzzle flash suppressors, the flash origin should be [em]in[/em] the muzzle and be suppressed. Maybe some additional bullet holes on the charging foe would make this look more desperate for Doomguy.
But other than that, pretty awesome render! =D
Woah, DUAL ASSAULT RIFLES!
I can't even lift one properly with only one hand! =O
That teleporting effect looks a little too watery... was that intentional?
Damn. Why are their armours shinier than DoomGuy's? O.o??
It's not their armour - they found it before Doomguy did.
Great work Shinji, very impressive!
Damn. Why are their armours shinier than DoomGuy's? O.o??
I like how pinky there doesn't seem to care/notice that there's a chick on his back trying to stab him something fierce.
Did you forget to render the shadows or is it deliberate? I think it looks more obvious here because of the brighter ambient light and openness of the area, as compared to the other renders that you've done.
Other than that, I like the composition. It feels hardcore but with a tinge of whimsicality from the big bad. =)
Nick Fury meets Chthulu! Nice render!
You keep talking about a contest... is there a link to the place that you are submitting works to?
Hola Shinji! Don't worry about us -- real life is more important than what happens in the forums. Whenever you are ready for a new piece of render, put it up for us to feast our eyes on. =)
Bah, I wish I had some actual art talent because I'd be able to draw what I had in mind for a while or whenever I hear the Doom RL title music.
I can describe it quite well, but what I try to create on the art side of things just doesn't look the way I want it.
Basically, I see the Doom guy, helmet off and completely beat up. You can tell he's fought his way through the hordes of demons with how bruised and cut up he is, certain parts of his armor has been torn open along with scratches on his arms. He's holding a shotgun in one hand and his other hand has nothing. He's exhausted, but knows he must soldier on, thus is his task. He may win, he may not, but one thing is for sure; he won't stop fighting.
Mech__Warrior,
After re-reading your discription, I've decided to see if I can do the idea justice. I hope that what I can come up with will be to your expectations.
Shinji.
All right, that would be pretty cool to see. I'm sorry I left for so long, I had to move back to college and the like. I do like the render that you posted more recently, reminds me a lot of Doom 3 when you get the BFG 9000 in there and test the alternate fire. :) I am kind of eager to see what you come up with.
Whats the software used to model/render these?
Shinji here,
I was able to finish my interpretation of Mech__Warrior's idea this week, and am now passing the result on to all of you.
I hope everyone likes it, and Mech__Warrior, I hope I was able to do your thoughts justice.
It's close. :) I imagined him carrying the shotgun in one hand and his face bloodied from battle, but what you did is just as good. Sorry I haven't been around in a while to provide any input, but things got pretty crazy for me.
"Beam me up... Kornel?"
Sorry for not saying much in this thread -- life's been hectic for the past few weeks with respect to work. I like the new direction of "action shots" -- interesting concept for rendering.
As always, I enjoy the different takes that you keep having on the DoomGuy concept. Not sure if you have tried talking with Kornel about your rendering/modelling abilities -- he might need extra muscle for Jupiter Hell if you have spare capacity.
"Damn you Arch Vile!" and here's a demonstration of a successful application of DodgeMaster as part of Gun Kata. =D
Are the flames placed as plane layers? Because I am seeing some weird horizontal artifacts near the bottom left corner.
I'd totally high-five DoomGuy right now.
Except he's holding a pistol. I don't want to catch a bullet with my mitts.
It's been a while! I'm glad to see you're still doing these awesome renders. Have a good year ahead too! =D
He was wearing a red shirt, that's why!
Hmmm... techno-bionic enemies.
I wonder how we can kill'em. Rip and... tear?
Skynet is sending in the Terminators!
DoomGuy meets Wolverine in ... Cyrodiil, perhaps? Nice :).
I just felt I needed more of an up-close and personal type of fighter this time rather then the ranged fighters I've had.Dragonslayer Doomguy.
...
Glad you like it though, it's feed back like this that keeps me looking for new inspiration.
Dragonslayer Doomguy.
Really, this is something I would love to see.
Somehow, the way Doomguy holds the sword seems a bit strange. I don't know - from the dynamic look of the picture it seems that Doomguy performed a horizontal swing, but the blade is vertical. I may be totally wrong, of course.
/me grabs his combat shotgun
BANG! click BANG! click BANG!
Damn! Why don't they die!
>.<
Nice, looks like someone tried to kill a Lost Soul, didn't finish the job and just made it even angrier!
/me grabs his own combat shotgun and falls in alongside thelaptop
BANG! click, click.
/me looks at combat shotgun
"$#@$#@ it I'm out of shells!"
/me throws combat shotgun to the side while drawing his pistol
POP! POP! POP! POP! POP! POP!
Thanks for complement Uranium, BUT WE COULD USE A HAND HERE!!!!
"Step aside."
/me draws a rocket launcher
FWOOOOOOSH!
BOOOOOM!!!
"Mwahahahah...er..."
/me looks at the lost souls scattered all around, looking barely scratched and even angrier
"F@#$ them and their fire resistance!"
/me snarls at ZicherCZ as he reloads his pistol
"ANY MORE BRIGHT IDEAS SOLDIER?!"
/me grabs a second pistol and duel-welds the pair.
"Because of" POP POP "that last stunt" POP POP "of yours, we" POP POP "have a serious case of CHARLIE" POP POP POP POP "DANCING THE FOXTROT!"
T'is a bit dark, but niice! Now, arm him with a shotgun. =D
That camo pattern is a little strange though. Vertical stripe down the centre of the face? Hmm...
Yeah, RogueLikes and RealLife can get nuts quite quickly. Good to see you back with a new render! It's always something to look forward to for me. =D
That camo pattern is a little strange though. Vertical stripe down the centre of the face? Hmm...
I think that's a light shining through an almost closed door... or Nebula cosplay. :)
But but... you could just replace the hard drive! >.<
It's okay, we'll wait patiently for your next renders. =D
This is pretty awesome.
Remember how I was saying that I had an idea stuck in my head after ZicherCZ's stunt during the role-play session that was sparked by my lost soul idea?
I was able to bring it to life tonight, and I must say that thelaptop, ZicherCZ, and I are in a real pickle as you can see in the fallowing image.
I'll add that this is one of, if not my most complex renders to date.
Looks like you boys are in a spot of trouble. Firing a rocket launcher at charging lost souls while there's a perfectly adequate shotgun right next to you. ;_;
Nice work though, i like the idea of lost souls portrayed like that. Makes it more sinister.
Wow, Shinji. This one is really great, and the lost souls really nightmare-fuelish.
I'll need to have a BFG rendered at my feet to get out of this mess ...
Ether you missed it, or you forgot maybe, but I ditched that shotgun back in the role-play chain when I ran out of shells for it with the FIRST SHOT!!
Unless ZicherCZ has any shells that he can slap into it, that thing may as well be a glorified club.
Unless ZicherCZ has any shells that he can slap into it, that thing may as well be a glorified club.
Looks like you're getting a lot better with lighting and use of perspectives. These last few are your best! It's getting down-right impressive recently.
Welcome back! I was sort of safe over the holiday, especially with my old friend.
/me raises his 12-gauge to a salute
Are we missing some shadows in the latest render?
These Marines need to learn to use that Predator's cloaking device properly :).
Those bad mothers are gonna rip one's arm off if one's not careful!
I can't tell what the tattoo is though. Maybe I'm not nerdy enough. >.<
Woah, the perspectives are quite interesting in these renders! O.O
This might be the first time we need to justify the DS requirements for wielding a firearm or something. >.<
It almost looks as though it were a homage to Leonard Nimoy, for dude on the left.
Very shadowy...
...I don't think I've seen a not-so-shadowy render in a while. Got any in stock?
Also, shared annoyance on not knowing how your entry placed, assuming you are annoyed. lol
Really, really nice pictures!
The armour looks sooo... different!
It feels a little dark, and the muzzle flash is a bit odd. But yes, that demonic face is nightmare fuel right there, especially if you made it MUCH LARGER!
/me runs and takes cover with his shotgun at the ready
/me ducks and rolls towards cover
Damnit! Stop scaring me like this! That said, the previous render is very nice, different feel from your usual renders.
Very... masonic. Heheheheheh... The lighting seems more natural than the others before though -- I'm really digging it!
That's a lot of fired rounds... is it deliberate that the fiend has such a smooth texture?
Rendered this last night.
And now we all know how an elite former commando looks like (besides h of course).
High bars of expectations are a good way to improve! Can't wait to see what you have in store for us! =D
This guy's grin and eyes are terrifying. O.O
Also, assuming that the top is the barrel and the bottom some kind of light source, you may be missing a bullet and/or depth for the barrel itself. =)
Ooo... shiny!
I think shadows are your weak points. With many of your renders, you often have more than one light source, but the shadows don't seem to match up well.
Sometimes when I look at a render, my eyes detect that something is "missing" when my brain cannot really say why.
But... don't be discouraged! I still like your renders! They have a tendency to play with space a lot -- contrasting between narrow spaces with the wide in a way that is terrifying/dynamic. =D
Woah man... all that shadow and fog... I dig it!
Fog's really hard to get right though... =/
The hair looks wonderful! And he has arms of steel to fire at full-auto without the butt in his shoulder. =D
I am rather disturbed at the feet of the red demon on the other end though...
Heyo! Sorry for not replying to your previous posts -- had been rather busy lately. I like the latest render, but I'm not sure if the motion blur works as well here. Maybe have him run and gun and apply the motion blur to give it more dynamism as opposed to just the swinging of hands?
As always though, good work -- I always enjoy seeing the stuff you put out! =)
Hmmm... not sure about the pointy-eared goblin face though. But your shadow work is definitely improving! =)
That cybernetic/robot model looks pretty cool -- it has a very Fallout-esque feel to it.(https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22879643/Renders/iray%20idea%20128.jpg)
Have you considered rendering a more complex scene? You seem to focus heavily on macro shots, maybe something with a larger field might help with training your eye for shadows and posing?
I'm so glad I'm looking at that in day light -- the mapping made you look grotesque! Heheheheh...
Though I think that the relative size of the head with regard to the body needs to be tweaked a little to look more "heroic". =D
As always, I really enjoy seeing what you come up with for renders! Please do more experiments and share them! =)
Just great, I just got a email from dropbox saying that as of the 15th of this month my public folder that I've been saving my renders to will become a private folder, so I'll have to figure out how to go about sharing things with everyone after that. If there are any suggestions of other places to store things and share them, let me know. Otherwise I guess I can just share links until then...
Hi~ just got back from my vacation in Seattle. I like the latest render -- there's a much stronger sense of realism in it! =)
"How many starbucks are in Seattle?"
The quality of your work continues to improve. Very nicely done.
