Title: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Gargulec on August 25, 2009, 05:36
Their name strike fear into hearts heretics, foul xenophils, mutants, even daemons of Warp tremble at their sight. For they were elevated above Human, by will of our Immortal Emperor. They are mankind saviours, who with flame and righteous fury cleanse and purge organism of Imperium from sickness within. They are mankind best servants, best protectors. Without them, we would fall.
Yes, we have all heard about Imperial Inquisition.
Sadly, they are too few to oversee every planet, every strange, unusual, possibly dangerous situation. And because of that, they need Acolytes.

You were chosen- though you do not know the reasons. Inquisitor Hereticus Pistis Sophia, of hive world Magna Delta offered you something of value far greater than any material thing- service in Inquisition, by her side, as her acolyte. Now, you have all gathered in her place, high in the spires of hive city Carnelia, to anxioulsy await meeting, and first assignment...

Character creation:
As in core rulebook, but wait-
1) No rolling for the attributes- not that I don't believe in you, but balanced stats are nice. You have 70 110 points to spend on attributes. You can not spend more than 20 on any given attribute, and you can not have any attribute with value higher than 50, including bonuses.
2) No divination rolls- I'll send you your divinations, when character creation is over.
3) You have additional 300 thrones to spend on equipment.
4) Rest as normal.
5) Character history STRICTLY required. No history- no play. It do not have to be long or very elaborate, but you must have it.
6) If you want to play as foul xeno (i. e. eldar) I'll allow it, but don't except to have an easy life (or life at all) Eldar slot already taken.

Post characters on forum.

So, um, where can I get the rules for this? I'd prefer not doing something utterly retarded. :S

As Malak said- get a core rulebook.
(It should be in net, try finding it as pdf)

If I create a psyker, do I roll for sanctioning effect, or will you assign one yourself?

Attention-
One week for character creation part, anybody who will not make in time will suffer terribly, and by this, he will make my day.

Regarding stats: just to be clear on something, is it just the 70 points all told, or 70 + the Homeworld Modifiers for each skill?
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Generic on August 25, 2009, 14:45
Okay, as soon as I can decipher this stupid 'Starting your Character' part of the rulebook, I'll start on my character. Don't be surprised if it's a Tech-Priest ;)

Son, I am disappointed!

No, seriously, usually I'm all for point buy generations in RPGs but when it comes to DH (and Traveller) it kind of spoils my fun of rolling stats and seing what I get and what it can work with. I'll cope with it if you insist, but still...

Seconding the question on the homeworld modifiers...
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Generic on August 25, 2009, 15:05
By the way, do you mean characteristic when you say attribute? I don't like confusion :S
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Gargulec on August 25, 2009, 15:07
Yup, 70 + homeworld modificators.
Sorry for no rolling, but my experience with randomized attributes is worse than bad (I've always ended up with creatures which could not hit broad side of barn and thought that 2+2 equals 5)

Yes, I mean characteristics.
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Generic on August 25, 2009, 15:08
But doesn't 2+2 equal 1? D:
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic

Only when you're talking about composite explosives, and the 1 is one mushroom cloud.

Post by: Gargulec on August 25, 2009, 15:15
Malek- if you want rolling badly, then roll. But if you end up with ass, not character, it will be only your fault;p!
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Generic on August 25, 2009, 15:29
Also, do we still use XP to increase skills, talents, traits, and crap like that? And if not, what do we do with that extra 400 xp?
Yes, I know, this is annoying, but I'm naturally going to ask all these questions. I'll probably get the hang of it in a week ;P

I'll take the chance. Emperor protects.

Let's see... Imperial World for multitude of options, rolls:
Stats, in order (2d10=13, 2d10=16, 2d10=12, 2d10=19, 2d10=14, 2d10=7, 2d10=16, 2d10=10, 2d10=15) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2226825/)

Which gives me:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All in all I have nothing to complain about except intellect. Using one re-roll as allowed by normal generation rules for that: Int, re-roll (2d10=20) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2226829/)

...okay, that was unexpected. That gives me final stats of:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rest of character generation will be eddited into this post later (or posted in other posts dunno), once I finish more important stuff. With BS of 36 Cleric idea lies in dirt in favor of either Assassin or marksman wannabe Guardsman.

Edit: Those rolls are a bit worrying to be honest, unless I miscalculated I got equivalent of 135 points X.x
Edit2: Seeing as 70 points means having roughly 7.5 points per stat, or 27 in stat on average I would consider upping the points for others.

Edit3: After some thoughts, assassin it is. That gives me:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also forgot about homeworld stuff:
-Blessed Ignorance {meh}
-Hagiography - Common Lore (Imperial Creed) [Int], Common Lore (Imperium) [Int], Common Lore (War) [Int] as basic skills {not shockingly usefull, but still}
-Liturgical Familiarity - Literacy [Int] and Speak Language (High Gothic) [Int] as basic skills {I know how to speak, amazing}
-Superior Origins {+3 WP, will do}

Some more rolling - Wounds, Fate Points, Thrones (1d5, 1d10, 3d10=[4], [10], [7, 8, 9]) (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2226899/) - leaves me with 12 wounds, 3 fate points and 444 thrones (this includes that bonus 300)

My starting 400xp will go towards:
-Simple Ballistic Skill Advance (100xp)
-Simple Agility Skill Advance (100xp)
-Catfall (100xp)
-Silent Move [Ag] (100xp)

Leaving shopping until I get some more info on what we can buy, and thus I'm left with:
Buying:
-Mesh Combat Cloak (350 thrones)
-Pump-Action Shotgun (75 thrones)
-Extra Charge Pack (Pistol) (10 Thrones)
-Extra 20 Bullets (1 Throne)
-20 Shells (1 Throne)

...which leaves me at 7 thrones... yikes.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Malek Deneith on August 25, 2009, 15:45
To be honest I'm not sure if I would be able to pull off a convincing cleric. Also regarding my Edit1 and Edit2 to stat-rolling post I did some very basic maths and I came up with this:
-we have 9 stats
-each stat has 2d10 roll, 11 on average
-thus the expected "sum" of rolls on which most of the game math is probably based is around 99
-considering this I would up the points of point-buyers to 100-110 give or take, or they will end up quite low-powered to typical stat-roll (not counting exceedingly lucky rolls as that one I presented above)
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Gargulec on August 25, 2009, 15:46
Shit, I miscalculated something with stats, sorry, edited post, new point amount is 110

How rare can be the items we buy at start? I'm thinking Combat Shotgun (Scarce) and Mesh Combat Cloak (Very Rare) here - available if I have enough thrones or not?

Nothing wrong with a little redundancy, I say.

After all, having multiple characters with the same skill assisting each other is one of the few legitimate ways of overcoming the notorious ineptitude of Rank 1-3 characters.

I am completely new to this game, my brothers. It would be an honour to slay the chaos descendants, however, I have to know as who.
Will the Machine God guide my aim? Will I storm the worthless minions of Khorne, purging the sinners with flames? I will certainly do everything for the Emperor, but I have to know as who.

Emperor, enlighten me, tell me, who should I be, the Tech-Priest, Psyker or the Pilot? Help me in my decision...

No such career as Pilot, two psykers per team are sure way to get cell eaten by beings of the warp, and Tech-Priests are damm cool.
Does it answer your question?

Also, there is nothing like "Our cell has too much firepower !"...

Someone good at talking people to death would also be useful. Scum, maybe ? A Cleric ? Y'know, Tech-Priests aren't too communicative.

For now we've got a Guardsman, an Assassin, an Outcast, a Psyker and a Tech-Priest, as far as I remember. Three guys to shoot and two to support, no party leader at all.

One guy to shoot them lots, one guy to shoot them once but proper, one guy to shoot them in the back, a Weirdboy, and a Mekboy.

When shall we kill the vile puppets of Chaos ?

Also, why is it that the Imperium uses such a stupid method to travel faster than light? It sounds like it only works 10% of the time :S

There's no other method, and due to The Dark Age of Technology, it's hard to invent something new now. People don't know how does technology work... With an exception of Adeptus Mechanicus.
Also, there are really not many crafts equipped with a Warp Drive, and due to accidents happening this number rapidly decreases. Am I right ?

Men I'd like to play, if I will ever be able to play, instead of being ass (GM, that is)

Finish this and we may exchange places, if you want. But in fact, I'm not an experienced GM... I shall observe and learn, but don't expect wonders, aye ?

Besides, the inquisitor's in charge, isn't she?

Nope. She has around a hundred cells under her management... And, yeah, you don't want those deus ex machina thingies while playing, do you ?
Title: Re: Machine Spirit PBF- character creation topic
Post by: Xander Morhaime on August 29, 2009, 06:19
Well, I'm sure the inquisitor can appoint someone to be in charge of the op once she meets our sorry bunch.
And on the note of warp-travel: sure, it is a hazardous means of transport, slow as well and definitely uncertain. But it is also the only actual method available to Humanity that works *at all*. The same goes for long-range communications via astropaths. It might suck, but it's the best thing we have.

And now for something completely different:
