Title: what causes enemies to sometimes do INSANE damage?
Post by: flamewolf393 on October 06, 2015, 16:57
My most common death is when an enemy will just suddenly do like 10 times the amount of damage it normally does. Like just the last run, I had found a stash of insane items (an assualt shotgun, nyarly's boots, gothic armor, and a supercharge sphere. Feeling like god incarnate now, I go to find something to slaughter. An imp steps out around a corner.... and kills me in one hit. WTF WTF WTF RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGE *table flip*

Bunch of potential reasons:And did I mention that perhaps the RNG hates you?

Any chance we could see the mortem so we can tell what happened exactly?

... gothic armor ...
There. With its -70% movespeed penalty, it's almost certain that the imp got two hits in - if the imp was really the cause.
If you provide the mortem (especially the "last messages" section), we might be able to see better what exactly happened to you.

Maybe even three hits.  :|  I've learned to value speed and never wear the Gothic armour.

And of course, we have to consider the possibilty that the RNG hates Flamewolf393, because the RNG hates everyone.  :P

But doesn't Gothic Armor also provide 7 armor? And imps do 2d5 fire damage per attack...

That's partly why we'd all like to see Flamewolf's mortem.  We're all waiting on you, Flamewolf393; it should be in the mortem folder.

(Also, it's 6 armour)

If we continue in building theories - if the armor was severely damaged already (<25%), then the protection would drop to 1 while movement penalty would persist at full -70%.
Without the mortem, it's just speculations anyway.

EDIT: The protection/resistance reduction does not seem to be mentioned on the Wiki. I'll fix that.

It wasnt just this time though, I have it happen a LOT where an enemy will just somehow kill me from full health in one hit.

Seriously consider the following changes to your playstyle:If that fails, then my primary hypothesis that the RNG hates you must be the only reason left.

You do realize that there is no enemy that can one-shot you from full health in one hit, right? As far as I am aware, the absolute most damage you can take in one hit is 49 (not counting getting knocked into lava). This requires:
1) Running into an Elite Former Commando (which only shows up in UV/N! Military Base or Ao100/ArAo666 in levels 80+)
2) Having said commando be equipped with a Napalm Launcher (3 different weapons)
3) Getting hit for max damage (It deals 7d7 damage, so max of 49).
And even then, you have 50 health at max, so even that cannot one-shot you.

Unless...flamewolf, are you not, by any chance, getting one-shotted on Angel of Humanity mode?

Flamewolf, I just want to say, for the record, that I can identify with what you're feeling.  I once threw a tantrum (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,4054.msg33547.html#msg33547) over losing a game in a way I deemed (at the time) unfair.

That being said, I'm also skeptical that enemies are bringing you from 100% to 0% health in one move as often as you say they are.  Could you, perhaps, be tapping arrow keys more rapidly than you realize so that it takes a few moves for them to bring you down?  Or perhaps you're not paying as close attention to your health as you think you are so that your health is low when the last guy hits you?  In any case, if this really does happen to you a lot, I strongly recommend you take levels in Ironman and Tough as Nails; they really help cut down on late game deaths.
