If you've been tracking my progress my first four wins were on HNTR. Eventually I hit that wall where, hey, looks like I'll need to get a bunch of silver medals to get the next rank. So naturally I had to scale my play up some in order to adapt to the new difficulty. It was hard at first, having to be more careful and methodical, but eventually I got the hang of it. The main thing that made the biggest difference was not being stingy with my med-packs. Other than that I learned a few tricks I can use to manage my inventory, ammochain being one of them.
Part of winning the game on higher difficulties is being able to adapt your playstyle to what the game randomly throws in your way. For example, I oftentimes have problems managing my inventory, and as a result, I sometimes end up with real problems later such as not having enough ammo, healing, or other miscellaneous tools. Having to walk across 5 tiles of lava because you didn't want to take that environment suit is not a worthwhile trade to make if you're carrying 8+ stacks of 10mm ammo or more than 4 or 5 med-packs. Carrying a good amount of rockets is hard to do, but I find carrying 20 + 1 in the pipe is a good amount. As many cells as you can carry, and 4 or 5 stacks of ammo for your primary if applicable. Shotguns can be really good late game and they don't get an ammochained weapon. Chainguns can be hard to keep ammo for until you get MAc but just remember to use your other weapons and you'll be fine.
MAc is a great master trait. You need triggerhappy with it which increases your average damage and you can get WK really easily from that too, and so with the amount of mods I was finding I decided that's exactly what I'd do. Ammochain also works wonderfully with Finesse and the right mods. My modified plasma rifle had 2 agility, 2 power, and 1 tech. The added accuracy was a must since I couldn't put any points into Eagle Eye. The power was a must because bulk wasn't an option, adding to the clip size with MAc is completely pointless. Tech mod to reduce the firing time helped save my skin in a lot of tight situations.
You'll notice how I cleaned up The Mortuary. It was kind of hard but since they were so generous with the placement of Supercharges I was able to defeat it no problem. I didn't find anything good there or at The Vaults, but I did get most of my mods from Hell's Armory. I spent most of the game in modified blue/red armor. Red armor with a power mod is pretty amazing. With 2 levels of WK, red armor with APT is even better. However, I found the Necroarmor after that, and AA after that. Once I had level 2 WK, it was all over. Nothing could stop me.
I went downstairs and killed cybie without even letting him fire at me.

Ah, thanks for the tip. As it turns out, quickkeys too take 0.8s to switch to. The more you know! Now I know to keep an extra chaingun handy instead of just reloading it.

How much time does it take to switch to a prepared weapon? How about an unprepared weapon (by pressing the number keys)?

0.9.9.2 / Re: [M|98%|YAVP] First AoMr win, turned out to be quite easy once I figured it out.
« on: March 02, 2011, 12:04 »No no no no, what is this? Pistol knock back is awesome. With how fast you can shoot, it's entirely possible to just juggle enemies in and out of your sight range without ever suffering return fire. And don't tell me rapidly blasting demons across the room with two tiny little pistols isn't cool. :D
Yeah, the thing about knockback with dualgunner is that you end up wasting shots when you kill or knockback the enemy with the first shot. This doesn't seem like a huge problem until you consider that all those shots take time, and time in a battle when you're not doing anything is time you don't want to have. I think dualgunner is inherently flawed in part due to the fact that you can't fire your pistols individually, and partially due to the fact that it's fairly equipment-dependent. This is all speculation on my part of course, but I am going to try it out on the harder difficulties because I don't see dualgunner being all that successful there.

Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.2] Imps vs Imps
« on: March 01, 2011, 22:47 »
That's not entirely accurate. Imp fireballs won't hurt imps, Baron and Hell Knight plasma won't hurt either, Arach plasma won't hurt Arachs, Cacos won't hurt cacos, and so forth. However, all former humans can hurt any other former humans, and the spider mastermind can hurt other spider masterminds. And all melee attacks hurt all monsters regardless of the source.

Well, what can I say about this run? When I first tried AoMr, I got all the way to cybie and then didn't know what to do, so I got blasted a whole bunch. I took the standard MGK route with that one. Pretty straightforward, although I did find a blaster so that was undoubtedly the thing that allowed me to carry on for as long as I did. I foolishly thought that the run was too easy, though, so I put it down in lieu of another run, AoB. That *was* actually pretty easy, and I posted my YAVP in the appropriate forum already as you may or may not know. Now, after my first AoMr run and when my rank upgrades began to demand pistol kills and silver badges, I decided to try my luck at AoMr since it indeed seemed like the easiest thing to get through. However, even with the standard MGK build I was having a lot of trouble. I didn't realize it was because I was just passing by all the special levels, thereby missing out on all that experience. I would only stick my head into Hell's Armory to get those precious, precious mods. But after a while, I figured out that I needed to go into every one I could, pretty much, but since I never figured out how to beat Hell's Arena on AoMr on this difficulty, I decided to say fuck it and just go into every one from Chained Court on. I skipped a few obvious ones, like Unholy Cathedral and Mortuary, but it ended up being perfectly okay since I did just fine with the experience I had. I was actually afraid that I was going to run out of ammo for a second there, but I'm sure I could have taken on 3 or 4 more cybies with the ammo I had left. I was doing a lot of damage.
So, let's talk about my build now. I'll admit, I didn't really have a plan, I was playing it by ear. I was noticing what I needed to boost at that specific time and getting the appropriate talent when the time came. I always always always go SoG SoG DG SoG at the beginning of AoMr, because I love dualgunner and SoGx3 is just so necessary when you've got that. After that I picked up a level of SoB which turned out to be a bit of a mistake since that caused me to knock back enemies with my shots. I don't really think it hurt me much except for in terms of wasting ammo which was a bit of a concern near the end of the game. After that I boosted my accuracy which I definitely needed as some of the later enemies weren't being hit at max range. Then I noticed that I was moving pretty slowly with the armor that I had, and also wasn't shooting fast enough while standing still, so I grabbed a level of HR. I could have grabbed Fin and been fine, probably, because I was drowning in useless mods and I'd have loved to slap more on that Gothic Armor I'd found in the last third of the game. Anyway, I ended up not getting it because as you can see, I never found a single technical mod throughout the entire run, and I figured that since my armor is quite heavy, I might as well mitigate that somewhat with some move speed. I got the HR, got the EE again, another level of HR, then a final level of SoB because I was fighting a lot of Rs and Vs on the last few levels before the cybie.
Cybie was a wimp. It was a good thing that I got 2 levels of HR and modified my Gothic Armor to reduce its movespeed penalty a bit, because I got one extra turn every I think sixth turn of the cybie. Regardless, it was the perfect amount for me to just run around the nearest pillar and plink away at him until he died, which is exactly what I did. Piece of cake. Now I just wonder what my next medals are going to be...

I've tried AoMr on HNTR plenty of times and in a lot of ways it feels harder than AoMr on HMP. The thing that hurts the most is the lack of experience. in that scenario, I am maybe level 6 by the time I get to level 15, and so the bruise brothers are a tad difficult to take on. I've also never managed to defeat the arena on HNTR AoMr, simply because all you have is a pistol with level 2 SoG and maybe a couple med packs. Not sure how you're meant to handle all the demons and like, what, six cacodemons with just a pistol. At least on AoSh I've got a combat shotgun, but in that case it's dead easy. I'm assuming it's (meaning AoMr arena on HNTR) just massively difficult to do, but I also imagine if you can pull it off you'll be set for the rest of the game, especially if you're also able to take out the arena master. But I don't see that happening. HMP? Sure, but not HNTR.

Didn't see one of these yet, and it seems like a good idea. So, let me start off with a little poll: AoMr chained court: yea or nay? Personally I like to go the normal route, because I rarely am equipped to tackle the arena OR the altered chained court by the time I face them in AoMr. Add to that the chance of better items and I almost invariably take the normal route. I might take the chained court route if I'm really hurting for health, or if I need an early EXP boost by killing those cacos that like to hang out there after I skipped the arena.

Discussion / Re: Assemblies thoughts
« on: February 22, 2011, 06:37 »MGK works pretty well when you consider the full extent of what you have:
- Two pistols at 120% firing speed (big DPS boost)
- HR helps match SoG so you have fast fire AND move speed
- MGK gives you (basically) a free shot whenever you dodge a projectile
- MGK also reloads your weapons whenever you kill something
So you can avoid, fire, avoid, fire some more, etc. It's pretty good against Cacodemons and Barons and the like, but naturally Revenants and Arch-viles have auto-damage so it doesn't help a lot there. I wouldn't mix high power pistols with it: PB-mixing is probably your best bet, however (just don't assemble it together). MGK is made for the more active pistol player who doesn't like "sneaking around the sides and corner shooting and doing other sorts of blind fire tricks," so maybe it's not the build for you if you happen to enjoy that kind of stuff.
Personally, my pistol build has been as follows:
SoG(x3) -> EE -> SoB -> Fin(x2) -> WK -> SoB(x2) -> WK
It can change depending on mods after level 5, but I play for a fully-moddable single pistol for maximum knockback effect. No DG, or MGK, just pure single-shot goodness. If you DO play DG, you shouldn't get so much knockback that you end up wasting bullets, meaning fewer SoB and probably some Rel.
Thanks for the input. After reading all that I got some pretty cool insights on how MGK should be used and I'm going to try a really cookie-cutter SoG SoG DG HR HR DM MGK build with two plain pistols. If I'm right there shouldn't be any problems after I get MGK, but I might have to get a little lucky until that point. That tip about not assembling the mods leaving you with a PB pistol hadn't occurred to me. I just thought it would not use it or something.
*** UPDATE ***
just tried pressing 'n', it won't let you unless you have WK. makes sense, but still, having a pistol with just one power mod on it is better than a High Power Pistol.

As I expected, I was able to assemble the high powered pistol just fine this time, I started a new AoMr. Must have just been a one time thing. Don't I look quite the fool.
edit: Can I just say here that dual wielding high powered pistols seems to be awful? They take the same time to reload as regular pistols and their clip is only half as large so if you don't kill whatever you're firing at (easily done when you're fighting cacos+) or you're fighting more than one thing at a time you're just forced to take tons of extra damage. If you've got two pistols each with a power mod, you've got more damage per clip with the same reload time and you don't even have to waste a bulk mod that halves the clip size. Sup with that?
Also this is pretty off topic but another thing that I noticed in that is that the +dodge talents don't really seem to mesh well with the pistol build. With the pistol you're mainly sneaking around the sides and corner shooting and doing other sorts of blind fire tricks, along with luring enemies one at a time. In any case, you're rarely being exposed to direct fire, and when you are, you have to stand still while firing unlike with shottyman build, which happens to be one of my favorites. Am I misunderstanding a fundamental aspect of the combat here or is the MGK build not really the ideal? Dodgemaster works really well against cybie, because you know exactly when he isn't going to fire, but I have a really hard time applying the same concept against other tough opponents like Bs or As.

Man, I don't know if this is a bug or not, but (the wikipedia says you don't need WK) in the midst of my AoMr run, it wouldn't let me assemble that high powered pistol until I got a point in WK. I hadn't tried any of the other assemblies that are supposedly doable without level 1 WK though, and I've already taken the talent so I can't test further. Anyone know what's up with this, or am I just dumb?

it wasn't too rough :) especially on the lower difficulties, this game is a lot more forgiving of a roguelike, and I come from a history of like, angband, ADOM, and crawl, so it's sorta breezy! also, i've played the older versions of doomrl, before the tactics thing was changed to running, but i never beat it back then.

0.9.9.2 / [M|88%|YAVP]
« on: February 20, 2011, 12:06 »
This marks my... I don't know, third win of doomRL ever. Something like that. It's getting easier every time.
Pretty standard build really. Had some trouble early in the game with bad sergeant placement, but as you can see I had plenty of health packs to last me through the game. I found a lot of awesome equipment like revenant launcher, jackhammer, and laser rifle that I never found in normal games, and I kept the firestorm pack just 'cuz I wanted to look at it on my player screen later.
I never had trouble after I got MVa except for when berserk wouldn't trigger, but again, large med packs and lots of armor helped me through. Also judicious use of the downstairs when it's surrounded by Ms and Bs. I'm pretty sure a 100% AoB run would be brutal as hell.
The Unholy Cathedral was mind bogglingly easy, I left with over 100% health because MVa makes that place trivial. Pain elementals become walking medkits with that trait. Lone archviles aren't that dangerous on HNTR with this build but if they're paired with anything stronger than a cacodemon then you should think carefully about how you approach the situation.
I found malek's armor soon after I got the LS which was nice but not entirely necessary. I got a ton of technical and bulk packs which weren't really that helpful. Got a few agility packs in the beginning which was really a lifesaver as I was able to boost my movespeed and knockback reduction enough to where sergeants didn't totally dick me over. Badass especially helped with this, but that didn't come 'til later.
Anyway, uh, yeah. I've already done an AoSh run and I died on the cybie on my last AoMr run because I didn't really know how dodging worked back then. Well, I still don't, just I know that it involves moving now. I think I'm going to try to win a standard game on HNTR, for some reason it seems more challenging to me with less restrictions because my build becomes too meandering and I invariably screw up somewhere along the line.
Also playing through the new version without spoilers (for the new stuff) is scary. I usually spoil myself when I come to a special level (especially for challenge games, wouldn't want to accidentally step into the Mortuary when all you've got is a chainsaw) but for example in the new armory in my AoMr game, it was quite difficult.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------
Before him 16 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
14 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.
