--------------------------------------------------------------

This is actually a mortem from last week that I finally got around to posting. A big step for me, this was my first ever victory on UV--and a full win, no less. Seven medals! I think that's the most I've ever gotten in one game.

I'm not the first one to point this out, but let me just say again that intuition(2) and Max Carnage are a POWERFUL combination. The diamond badge is to beat it N! without TaN/Iro, but I think that really needs to be reevaluated because intuition and hellrunner give you far more of an advantage. TaN actually isn't very good in Max Carnage games, because with higher damage rates a point of protection makes less difference. It is even less valuable now that there is a player class that can get badass without it. And while ironman is good, it's still not as good as in a regular game. Since both you and enemies can damage each other much more than in a regular game, hitting them before they hit you is more important than being able to take more damage yourself. That's what makes intuition so unbelievably powerful in this challenge, even more than ammochain (which is also less useful than a standard game because you can usually kill enemies with less than half as much ammo). Intuition is so great that even before version 0.9.9.4, I thought it was arguably worth the two levels you had to sink into a completely useless trait. But now that you don't need Eagle Eye, and you can get intuition(2) at level 2, this game becomes a cakewalk if you play as a scout. Hellrunner also allows you to dodge (possibly taking no damage), AND move faster than your enemies. If you have Cateye and 2 levels of hellrunner, you can make it through most levels without taking a hit as long as you're careful.

There is one genuinely difficult part (on UV or higher at least), and that is the Chained Court. All those captains shooting at you 4 times per round, doing 6 damage per hit, and almost never missing! Even if you can reduce the damage to 1, that's still usually 4 damage (8% health) per attack. If you have 3 or 4 of them attacking you, plus a couple Barons, plus the Arena Master, you are going to lose your health FAST even with your zerk armor on.

So that took me a few tries. But once I beat the chained court it was smooth sailing. Cateye allowed me to kill pretty much everything except Archviles with my gatling gun, before they could even get close enough to see me. And if I did see an Archvile, I would just pull out my high power plasma rifle and kill them in one volley.

Time listed as over 4 hours. That includes some time leaving the computer on as I went away to do other stuff.

First time making the Cerberus Armor. I thought the Onyx Armor would be a perfect match, giving me indesructible armor with crazy resistances, but I didn't notice that it drops your defense by 2. Oops! It probably would have been better used on regular red armor--the slowdown isn't as bad, you get some extra fire resistance, and 2 extra defense points on top of it. I imagine it would take so long to deteriorate that you wouldn't even really need a bulk armor mod.

EDIT: It turns out that I either misread the wiki, or it was mistaken. I tried making a Cerberus Armor set with Red Armor, but it turns out that your defense and speed do NOT stack with the original armor. Nor do your fire, plasma, or acid resistances. No matter what armor you use, you will have 0 defense and 30% speed reduction. So in fact it turns out that Onyx Armor arguably IS the best choice if you make Cerberus Armor. Also, I notice that your resistances to melee, bullets, and shotguns are unaffected. So armor that is strong against those would also be good choices.

Nonetheless, my cerberus armor became almost instantly useless when I found the energy shield. Holy CRAP does that take the edge off of late-game enemies! Even with max carnage, revenants and mancubi were taking off 10% or so per attack.

I was hoping for the arachnotron lair and/or city of skulls--both would have made things a lot easier. Especially the arachnotron lair. But even without it, things were pretty easy overall.

Very few problems in the Mortuary. I went in with plenty of plasma cells, allowing me to clear out one side easily thanks to my BFG. Then I could take my time on the other side, taking advantage of ammo drops from captains, commandos, and arachnotrons.

I debated whether or not to fight JC... glad I did. Again, thanks to the energy shield, he was quite easy. I basically just spammed the BFG at him over and over. He hit me with a few rockets but with the energy shield on I was able to shrug them off.

All in all an awesome run.

EDIT: Fixed a few parts where I thought the writing was unclear.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My last run on version 0.9.9.3!

I'm surprised that more people don't recommend The Vampyre master trait for Angel of Masochism. I was surprised at how easy this made the game--once you have it, every berserk pack or invincibility powerup is basically a chance to refill your health. With the Longinus Spear, you can keep your berserk going longer which means I was almost always at 200%.

Shotguns worked great until I got the Longinus Spear. Super Shotgun with Firestorm mod pack was sweet, but a few levels later I got the Longinus Spear which made it pretty much obsolete. I just scouted the levels and used powerups to kill really nasty enemies like Viles, Mancubi, and Revenants. By the time that was done I usually only had a few weak enemies left over that were easy to clean up with my combat shottie.

The Mortuary was a cakewalk--one hatred skull, gave me more than enough berzerk charge to kill everything with ease. I don't think I ever even dropped below 50% health. I might have been able to even beat JC but didn't want to risk it.

Maybe some other, more skillful players could try this build out and see if it's as effective on the higher difficulty levels. You'd have to be a Marine, of course. ;) On HNTR, shotguns + Badass were more than effective enough until I picked up the Vampyre trait but it might be harder when you're meeting more powerful enemies earlier on. Also it might be harder to get in melee kills on the later levels, but I would think you could still get a lot of mileage from invincibility/berserk powerups. And Vampyre makes N! ridiculously easy, doesn't it?

(Oh, if you're wondering about the extremely long play time--I had to get up from my computer and stop playing in the middle of a level, so I just left the game running and put my computer in "sleep" mode.)

On the heels of my Ao100 win, I decided to try Angel of Pacifism. Man, I can't believe how lucky I was! Seriously, I found the phaseshift set, PLUS onyx armor pack! This game was a cakewalk. Look at all the leftover phase devices and med-packs that I didn't even use! I think I used maybe two large med-packs the whole game. I even had one level with two Arch-Viles blocking the exit, but I barely broke a sweat. I just turned on run mode, used one of my ample large medpacksa few steps from the exit, and got through no problem. Actually, I think this may have been my easiest win ever.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This one took a long time. I just kept stupidly killing myself halfway through. Maybe I could have gotten a quicker victory with Ammochain, I wanted to beat Ao100 without it. I just think it makes the game too boring, because you play every game almost the same and most exotics/uniques are useless to you. There is usually little challenge once you get ammochain.

Of course, this game was even easier than an ammochain game once I got the blaster. Seriously, the blaster has to be the most powerful weapon you can find in Ao100. You can stack SoG, SoB and Fin to give yourself +6 damage per shot, and fire speed of .14 seconds--makes an Ammochain plasma gun look like a pea shooter by comparison. Note that you can also fire through walls with it, and you can combine it with Intuition level 2--in other words, you can kill swarms of enemies on the other side of the screen before they even come close to getting you. And, of course, it regenerates ammo so fast that I never even saw it go down outside of berserk mode.

The plasma shotgun was nice. I think it's an underappreciated weapon--great for targeting Arch-Viles surrounded by other enemies. My first time using the Railgun, and though it wasn't as uber-powerful as I'd expected, it sure did come in handy combines with Int level 2. It seems to be a guaranteed hit even when the enemies are outside your field of vision. Just get the red dots lined up and blast away.

On level 90 I found the Trigun--that was just overkill. I was already killing enemies so fast I barely noticed, but let me tell you Trigun/blaster is a powerful combination. Revenants and Cacodemons take less than .5 seconds. Arch-Viles are nearly powerless since I can just knock them out of my field of vision over and over.

The decision to skip cateye and get Badass was a good one. I seldom even came close to 100%, and I think that extra bit of breathing room in case I got ambushed was better than being able to kill enemies before they can see me--especially since it was so easy to kill them with the blaster and intuition anyway.

While Ao100 is fun in the beginning it sure gets boring past level 50 or so, especially if you're going for 100% kills. Of course I wound up with 99%, so all that work was for nothing. Anyway, I don't think I'll be playing Ao100 much for awhile. Maybe I'll go for UV Max Carnage next time. I almost managed to beat it on an easier difficulty level, but I seriously underestimated the Cyberdemon. Man, it took like 2 hits for him to kill me at 100% health. Angel Armor didn't even make a difference.

Requests For Features / Changing rewards on special levels
« on: May 26, 2010, 16:10 »
Special levels. They're there to give a little extra reward, a little extra fun, and (sometimes) a little extra voluntary challenge. Some of them are way harder than the regular levels, and some of them are pretty much just freebies. I think they're well-designed for the most part, but I have a few ideas that would help balance them out, and make sure all of them are worth visiting, on almost any challenge mode. Please note that most of these changes are very minor--I think the levels are good the way they are, but some tweaking here and there could improve things.

And just to see if anyone else shares my view of things, I attached a little poll. Please respond to the poll on whether or not you agree with me, and the changes I suggested.

Hell's Arena:

The reward on the standard game is absoutely perfect. Enough to be worth the challenge, but not so much as to be gamebreaking or anything. I like that it gives special rewards on certain challenge modes, but maybe some of the challenge mode rewards could use a little tweaking.

AoB: The difficulty just seems way out of proportion to the rewards, especially now that demons have been buffed. It seems impossible in most games unless you're really lucky, or at least Blade-level skilled. And what do you get for toughing it out? A few med-packs that barely make up for the ones you'll probably use, and a homing device. Give me a break. Either the reward should be better--how about increasing the medpacks, and adding in plasteel boots with an agility mod? And a bulk mod for your chainsaw? That would make Hell's Arena worth the trouble. Either that, or keep the rewards weak, giving us a berserk pack after each round.

AoMk: Again, this one is considerably harder than the standard game, but the rewards are a lot weaker. Power mods aren't all that great with pistols. A blaster would be a nice reward, but maybe too overpowered. Agility mod + boots, like in AoB, might be better. Oh, and how about a phase device, for people attempting Brick Silver?

AoS: Double shotgun as final reward is good. It's not that powerful, but definitely very handy, and anyway Hell's Arena is pretty easy on AoS so the reward doesn't need to be that great. But how about, after the first round, you get a combat shotgun instead of a useless chaingun? AoS games where you don't find a combat shotgun for 5+ levels are REALLY annoying.

AoP: Why do we even get a supercharge when we can't use it? Just give us another large medkit instead.

AoRA: HOMING PHASE PLEEZ KTHXBYE.

The rest of the challenge modes are probably fine as-is.

Chained Court:

Getting a chainsaw is perfect--makes AoB much more doable. But I think the double agility mods really need to change, because they make Ammochain games way too easy. More about it in this topic: http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,3011.0.html
How about two random mods instead? With chance of getting one unique/exotic mod pack if you're lucky.

Second idea: one agility (or random) mod, plus one pair of boots. This wouldn't overlap my Hell's Arena ideas, since you would only get the boots on challenges where the secret rooms are almost impossible to enter.

The Wall:

More or less perfect, but how about a homing device in the backpack room? That way people attempting Brick Silver would only need a single phase device.

Hell's Armory:

I think it should have more weapons. This is supposed to be an armory, right? So why is it that almost every time I go there I wind up finding something like two pistols, a shotgun, and a chaingun? I say it should have one of every regular (non-exotic) ranged weapon. Nothing but blue and green armor is kinda weak, too.

How about a secret area with a motherload of guns and armor? I think you could fit some stuff over on the right side of the map. You would need to cross the lava and step on a certain spot, opening the door to two rooms guarded by Mancubi (Arachnotrons on easier difficulties). The rooms would contain lots of random weapons and armor (with high chance of exotic/unique).

Halls of Carnage:

No changes necessary.

Hellgate:

No changes necessary.

Uholy Cathedral:

No changes necessary, other than fixing the zerk armor bug. ;)

City of Skulls:

How about throwing shotgun/pistol users a bone and giving some ammo? Doesn't have to be that much, just enough that careful players will just about break even. A mod pack or two might be nice, too, to make it more worthwhile for players who don't need the BFG.

Spider's Lair:

I think it would be cool if this were kind of like an arena level. After defeating the spiders, you get a message like "You hear the sound of something terrifying crawling out from the webs!" and the Spider Mastermind appears right in the center, along with ammo and weapon(s)--maybe a nuclear plasma rifle?--scattered all over the map. Final reward would be same as before.

The Vaults:

This is another one where the reward isn't worth what a pain it is to get the treasure. It seems like most of the time there isn't even a single exotic or unique in either of the side vaults. The one time I got to the middle I didn't see any either (although there might have been some--I was fried almost instantly and so I didn't get a chance to see).

Is it possible to make it so that the left and right vaults have a guaranteed exotic (one total, not per vault) without specifying which one? And one exotic plus one unique in the middle? That would be nice. Also, it's been said before, but how about a couple phase devices? One per side.

The Mortuary:

This one is perfect as it is--super hard, with super items as your reward for finishing.

The Lava Pits:

I think everyone complains of the same thing: it's a pain in the ass to get through, and the rewards are piddly at that point. At that stage in the game, you're probably set to win already, so how about something fun? How about you get two random pieces of gothic / phase equipment? Maybe one time you'd get two gothic boots, and the next time you'd get 1 of each armor type, but the next time you get a phase armor set. All right! A chance to try out a gothic/phase set would make mucking through all that lava worthwhile.

So here's what happened. I was doing an AoP run. I was in the Halls of Carnage, using my missile launcher to kill off everything. I wanted to make an opening in the wall, so I shot it. I stood right next to the wall and fired. Since I had Fireangel, it shouldn't have hurt me, right? Wrong. It took off the last of my health, killing me.

I had a Jackhammer. ;_;

Is there any need to comment? I think the mortem speaks for itself. Oh, except for the fact that the Baron of Hell was "mortally wounded" when I shot him. Probably "almost dead" as he retaliated. I'm not denying it's my fault--with more caution I probably would have made it through. Just sucks to lose when I was so close.

After countless other marines named SoG were killed off--Smart SoG,
Dumb SoG, Crazy SoG, and too many others to mention--Gay Son of
a Gun finally succeeded where his heterosexual brethren had failed.
Gay SoG sips a strawberry martini as he sits at a bar outside the
marine base, surrounded by fellow marines. They're all begging to
hear, one more time, about how he toppled the fearsome
Cyberdemon using only a pair of pistols. "Oh, pleeease!" laughs Gay
SoG. "So now, all of a sudden the Marines' policy has changed to 'Do
ask, DO tell'? Ah ha ha ha ha!"

THE END
--------------------------------------------------------------

Hooray! Finally, a victory outside of ITYTD. I think I managed to get my first victory deceptively easily--even if you have a lot of bad habits, you can still squeak by with just a little bit of luck. But on HNTR or higher, if you don't play smart the RNG will kill you, every time.

I think one major turning point was around L18. Up until that point, one of my big bad habits was trying to get 100% kills all the time. But then I opened the door to a small room and saw a Baron of Hell, accompanied by TWO Arch-Viles. And me with just two pistols. At that point, I knew running away like a little girl was my only option. I used a phase device, grabbed some armor shards and a supercharge I'd spotted around the periphery, and high-tailed it for the stairs. After that, I'd already broken 100% in this game so there was less temptation to stick around and hunt for that one last mancubus prowling around a level.

The phaseshift boots were a lucky find. The speed boost is a HUGE help. Gothic boots... not so much. They work well for when you have to run over a small patch of lava.

I decided to clear the lava pits, figuring it would be easy with the gothic boots. I was wrong. Total pain in the ass. I think I wasted 2 medpacks on that level. Even the experience didn't help me, since I didn't gain any levels between the lava pits and the Cyberdemon.

The final fight was harder than my melee battle, but still not too difficult. Gun Kata makes the Cyberdemon pretty easy. But most of us probably knew that already.

About the name: I was just going through a run of Marksman attempts where I named all my characters "_____ SoG." On a lark, I decided to try calling this character "Gay SoG"... and he happened to be the one that made it to the end! I guess I must have had rainbow power protecting me or something.

Next step is to rack up more silver medals, and build up my skills. From here on I'll be playing mostly on HMP level, except maybe some of the harder challenges like Angel of Berserk or Purity.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is a death from awhile ago. I named him "Stupid SoG"--at the time I was using "____ SoG" names for all my marksman characters. "Lucky SoG," "Crazy SoG," etc. In spite of the name, I actually didn't make that many stupid mistakes with this one.

I got demolished on level 16. I had about 66% health. I walked into a room with... 3 barrels, I think. Took 1 or 2 steps in, and a Mancubus fired as soon as I stepped into its line of vision. 1 Mancubus + 3 barrels + 1 enclosed area = 1 extremely dead space marine. It happened so fast, I didn't even know what hit me until I looked at the mortem.

A lot of players would probably write this off as unavoidable. But I try to treat each death as a learning experience, and ask myself: what could I have done to prevent this?

Well, I could have picked up those Small Health Globes. At least one of them. There's really no reason to leave Small Health Globes behind if they won't put you over 100%. Even if they will put you over 100%, it's debatable.

Of course, even with 100% health I might not have survived. My mistake was going into that room. I noticed the barrels, and the potential danger. But I was more concerned about destroying items than protecting myself Quite frankly I was getting cocky. I had the Beretta, and Gun Kata, which I had been using to rip through everything.

At that point in the game, there really weren't too many items that I needed, though. The chances of finding something really helpful in that one room were pretty low. On the other hand, the chances of running into an enemy that can blow up all those barrels and instakill me are fairly high. If it wasn't a Mancubus, it could have been a Revenant, or a Baron, or an Arch-Vile. Hell, even a shotgun sergeant could have messed me up pretty bad in that situation. So it probably would have been smarter to just blow up the barrels, then enter the room. I would have been fighting a severely weakened Mancubus, and dodging its shots enough to at least reduce the damage.

Another option would have been to go around and enter from a different doorway. The Mancubus might have hurt me, but probably not enough to kill.

So basically, it was bad luck that killed me, but with more caution I probably could have survived it. You have to prepare for the possibility that things will go wrong.

Discussion / The Adventures of Private YASD!
« on: February 08, 2010, 23:30 »
This is kind of a "spinoff" of the screenshots topic, but with a common theme. It features the adventures of a Space Marine called Private YASD who just can't seem to stop killing himself through bad luck and stupidity (mostly stupidity).

Hopefully we can read the stories of Private YASD, have a laugh, and remember some of our own stupid mistakes.

For those of you who are wondering, yes, I did alter the screenshots in order for some of the jokes to work. I'm not dedicated enough to this idea to give myself a real YASD just to post a joke.

I will put each one in its own post, complete with title. Hope you all enjoy!

--------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, I know it's a victory on easy. I'm still a "n00b" at this game--I've only been playing a few weeks.

It took me 51 deaths to beat this game... I probably would have beaten the game a lot sooner if it weren't for my own stupidity.

One lesson learned the hard way: don't hold down the cursor keys to move, ESPECIALLY when there are enemies around. There's nothing like a marine with ammochain and a plasma rifle with sniper and power mods being killed by a Baron that he walked into and punched until the Baron ripped him to shreds.

I haven't been playing ITTYD because it seems too easy. I found myself getting bored after awhile and dying because I wasn't paying attention. I figured I could beat it on that level if I applied myself, but would rather do the game on HNTR which is a lot more fun.

But then decided to try an all melee ITYTD game. I figured the melee aspect would make it reasonably challenging, and anyway it would give me a chance to get a lot of badges in one sitting. Unfortunately I missed the 100% kills badge by quite a bit--I probably shouldn't have gone to the Vault, since there probably wouldn't have been much worthwhile stuff for me anyway.

It is nice to have something to show my own progress, but I think this is enough of ITYTD level for me. From now on, it's HNTR or better all the way. To be honest, I didn't get all that big a feeling of accomplishment. I just breezed through the last few levels, staying over 100% health almost the whole time. The Cyberdemon fight seemed to end almost before it started, with me never even coming close to running out of med-packs. Once I went berserk it was over. Maybe next I'll try the Marksman challenge. Wish me luck!

Quick question for future strongman games: Can I use the rocket launcher to open passageways? Will just firing the rocket launcher make me lose the Strongman badge, or do I have to actually kill a monster with it? Having access to those agility mods in the chained court would make a strongman win a lot easier.

Discussion / Display problems--SOLVED!!

I'm a huge fan of both Doom and roguelikes. Recently I finally downloaded DoomRL. It seems like a game I would really love, but unfortunately I am having trouble with the display on my computer. First, here is a screenshot taken with the "F9" key. This is what I SHOULD be seeing.

Next, this is a screenshot image of my screen. This is what I am ACTUALLY seeing:

Notice how two of the former humans, and some of the walls, and my own character, are not displayed? And the dots that make up the floor are extra wide, taking up two spaces each.

I am running this game in Windows Vista, on a Japanese computer. Japanese computers interpret a lot of ASCII characters differently. For example, in games like Nethack, the backslash always comes out as a "yen" symbol. And if I set the display options to "IBMGraphics" I get all sorts of random Japanese characters.

It looks like something similar to this is happening here. Japanese computers have a "wide" font for characters. This is because the standard font size is too small to display kanji properly, so they can switch the display to "wide" mode for Japanese text.

It looks like certain floor tiles are being displayed in "wide" mode, and that objects will only be displayed if they align a certain way with the floor tiles. So half of all objects are invisible! The game is pretty much unplayable this way. I'm getting shot by invisible sergeants, missing essential items, and getting blown up by invisible barrels.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how to fix it. Other roguelikes usually allow you to change the type of ASCII display, and by fiddling with that I've always been able to get something good enough not to hamper my game in any way. But I don't see any options to change the display type in DoomRL.

Can anyone help me? Do you know of any ways that I can change the display in DoomRL? Or, do you know any ways I can configure Windows so that DoomRL will display properly?

If anyone can help me, I would REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks!
