First time reaching the mastermind. I didn't look up how it attacks beforehand and knew nothing whatsoever about it... I was going into the fight blind and rather poorly equipped.

0.9.9.5 / Re: [M|AoMr|81%|YAVP] To Hell with guns! :P
« on: January 06, 2012, 20:33 »
Really? I had a pretty easy time with the Anomaly in M|AoMr, but it might have to do with my loadout selections. I grabbed Hellrunner at L4/5 and made Tactical Armor as soon as possible.
My general strategy was to walk out until the walls broke, start running, retreat back into the entry room so only one lost soul can hit me, switch to better armor and gun them down that way. With Scout+Tactical Armor+HR1, I could move faster than the lost souls so I didn't take too many hits retreating.
Now, fighting the brothers... I have trouble with timing missile-users.

0.9.9.5 / [M|AoOC|17%|YAVP] I like AoOC...

Picked up .9.9.5 a few days back. Spent most of my time on AoMr runs only to die horrible deaths to stupid things... and the more luck I had with equipment, the stupider the death. So, switch to something else: AoOC--
Scout was an obvious pick for this one-- being woefully undergeared and underlevelled meant running straight down the stairs, whether it was an extra floor or a normal one, was the best option. Taking two levels of Hellrunner was done to aid in this endeavor, as well as possibly getting Dodgemaster for the big fight against the Cyberdemon. Luckily, there were two invulnerability orbs and managed to skip five floors with it on, including two Arachnotron caverns. On the final floor, it was a warehouse filled with crates... and the stairs in the far opposite corner.
-----
Sneaking through between the crates in the first two rooms was a trivial task: it was like the forces of Hell had never expected a lone marine to storm its depths. Not a single creature was spotted. Foolishly, Adam left the cover of the crates to swiftly move along the wall in the third and final room. As soon as he stepped around the final crate before the wall, he found himself staring into the ghastly visage of an archvile. Six successive shots of an assault shotgun echoed around the room as he retreated back behind the crate.
Reaching back to reload, he cursed his foolishness as he realized he had made the mistake of a novice, not a hardened marine: he felt a chain of 10mm ammo where there should've been a box of life-giving shotgun shells. Crucial moments were lost as he fumbled to reload his weapon... moments during which he felt the harsh sizzle of boiling metal grate against his ears as his battered armor fell to pieces around him. Cooked rare, Adam unloaded his weapon, through the muzzle, into the arch-vile. It was dead, probably in a hell even worse than this place, he mused.
Resolving to be cautious, Adam patched himself up with his medkits. They didn't seem to do much for the wounds, but at least they kept him alive. He advanced amongst the edge of the crates, rather than the exposed wall he rushed at so excitedly earlier. It was fortunate he did this, for it was here he found a weapon precious beyond all others: the nuclear plasma rifle. Grimly steeling himself against necessity, he felt that this singular tool would be decisive to his destiny. He tossed it in his bag. Laden with destiny or not, his trusty shotgun and shell box were his old comrades here.
Finely honed senses indicated that his final destination lay just a few steps behind the final crate. Having learned from his previous encounter with the arch-vile, Adam poked his shotgun around the corner and fired blindly. The harsh scream of an arachnotron showed that he had guessed correctly. This floor wasn't empty... they were simply waiting for him. Exposed, the arachnotron charged around the corner, but the fierce shotgun blasts kept it at bay, where it couldn't properly aim. With a final blast, followed by a wail, Adam confidently stepped out to find another incensed arachnotron standing over the body of its comrade. Stepping back behind the crate, this arachnotron proved no more intelligent than its partner and quickly fell.
Mentally and physically prepared, Adam began his descent into the Phobos Arena.
Something was horribly, horribly wrong. There was no open floor, punctuated by pillars. The loud, clanking steps, described to him by supposed survivors wasn't there. This wasn't the Phobos Arena. All his training, his knowledge of missile speeds, his honed reflexes, his agility, would be useless against an opponent that didn't fight like that. With a look of determined resignation, he knew that fate had not truly forsaken him and he would do honor to the marines by fulfilling his mission. He pulled out the nuclear plasma rifle.
-----
Sorry about the horrible writing. I kept stopping and starting, so there might be a few disconnects in there. And yes, I forgot about that little change regarding the new boss. Instead of going up against it, totally unprepared and probably losing, I just nuked the floor and called it good.
For the non-literary version of what happened on the last floor, it was one of those crate-floors. I ran into an arch-vile but shot it from around a corner until it died, taking a few hits in the process due to player error. Moving to the stairs, I came across a revenant, but just walked away. (It didn't follow.) Grabbed the nuclear plasma rifle (luckily didn't run into anything else-- it was a few blocks in), headed towards the stairs, ran into arachnotrons... shotgunned those from around the corner and headed down. Really the only interesting floor. The other ones consisted of "Run straight for the stairs a few steps away", "Oh hey, an exposed imp. Shoot it for the xp!" and "Humdeedum. Invulnerability orb. CHAAAAAAAAARGE!" Most of those kills were right after I got my first invincibility orb... and walked into an exposed room with a mancubus and revenant.
As for the post title? I tend to do full clears or Ao100 so I'm used to having an incredible assortment of tools (or medkits) to fall back on. Or, if not that, skills built up well enough to fight, run or evade. AoOC forced me, the player, to not fully explore floors and to play defensively for once.

Century Lounge / [M|Ao100|YAAM] Easiest run ever...
« on: September 11, 2011, 02:17 »
Ed. Oh darn it. Submitted then I just noticed there's a separate sub-board for Ao100s and I can't remove my own posts. Sorry about that. ><
GH: Moved and retagged for ya.
What made this run particularly easy?
1. Getting enviroboots really early.
2. Assembling red cybernano armor early-- had to disassemble both the Jackal and Trigun to get the parts. [1/18th odds of getting the right pieces, I believe?]
3. Found a napalm launcher around the 20s.
4. Disassembled a revenant's launcher into a nano pack.
Between an SoB-enhanced minigun, combat shotgun and double shotgun, I got down into the 40s quite easily. Didn't have the ammo to use any other weapons with any kind of regularity. Disassembled the revenant's launcher as soon as I got it at 35, but idiotically, I didn't toss it onto the launcher straight off. (I've been trying to assemble a Biggest Fucking Gun since it was introduced and still haven't gotten all the parts in a single run yet...) Around the early 60s, I was running into packs of mancubi and revenants so I scrapped my hope of a BFG and dropped the nano onto the launcher. That pretty much finished things off... don't think I dropped below 100%HP for the rest of the game. Disassembled some random exotic into a sniper pack around the mid-80s and learned that the no-miss element of the sniper pack also works for things out of LoS. Spent the rest of the time carpet bombing, effectively.
There were two things that proved to be mildly problematic: Lava elementals and not blowing up walls from a distance. Immune to the napalm launcher, I had to swap to other weapons... namely, the plasma rifle or the BFG10k (which, sadly, actually saw very little use). The problem with not blowing up walls is that it made it easier for things to get to me, particularly upon going to a new floor. Immunity to standing in a puddle of lava does not mean immunity to a lava-filled rocket blowing up point blank...
There's an inordinately high number of saves since every Ao100 I do well in fails for one reason or another to something that isn't gameplay.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.4] Scavenging Multiple Unique Mods
« on: September 09, 2011, 02:21 »
Not sure if it's intentional behavior as mods are a bit different from straight-up equipment, but it's possible to generate multiple unique mods via scavenging. Specific one in this case being an Onyx.

As silly as it is, one of my first notable reactions occurred when looking at the traits screen for Techs:
Malicious Blades
You can attack with a blade in every hand at the same time...
"Do we get to have more than two hands now?!"

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.4] Trait on the wrong class?
« on: September 08, 2011, 02:50 »
According to the changelog:
[add] -- TR#---: Scout Master Traits - Shottyhead, Running Man, Sharpshooter!
[add] -- TR#---: Technician Master Traits - Scavenger, Entrenchment and Malicious Blades!
I'm getting scouts with Shottyhead and Running Man... and technicians with Malicious Blades, Sharpshooter, Entrenchment and Scavenger.
Ed. Frankly, I'm surprised I didn't see this posted on the forums already, though I did only check the first two pages and the Known Bugs sticky. And if I somehow missed it... apologies.

Requests For Features / Re: The Horrible Ideas Thread

Angel of Age
Right now, you're in the peak of health! Unfortunately, fighting your way through hell is making you feel tired, weary and old.
You begin by selecting 15 perks. Every two floors, you lose one (while still respecting prerequisites). Every three floors, you either lose an inventory slot, dropping whatever you were holding in that slot onto the ground.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.3] Armor sets triggering oddly
« on: May 16, 2011, 17:37 »
Short version: Set bonuses for Gothic and Phaseshift appear to be behaving oddly. No intentional unusual behavior, prevents further gameplay, occurred on L83 of Ao100.
-----
I picked up a set of Gothic and Phaseshift equipment.
As I recall from previous versions, putting on set equipment would instantly [or close enough] trigger their set bonuses. This time, I blew out a bridge over a lava river and decided to phaseshift back over it... and never levitated. Ran around a bit, nothing happened. Okay, well, since my boots were modded, maybe I accidentally destroyed the levitation mechanism or my mods were too heavy. *walks over lava*
Then, I ended up against three arch-viles and a Revenant due to sloppy BFG9k firing, so I decided to go fortress-mode. Nope, that didn't trigger either so back to popping medkits.
A few floors later, I notice I find an extra power mod and decide to upgrade one of the spare red armors I've been hauling around for a while. I swap it with my Gothic and..."You feel like a fortress!" And no amount of further armor swapping will get rid of that. Just to be sure, I even dumped all my stuff on the ground. *sighs at L83*

I happen to be standing on the stairs here. Good thing I didn't throw out that homing phase device I've been hauling around for fifty floors...
Edit: This map might also call for modification; I was the impression that normal acid/lava wave floors started you off towards the left with the stairs in the right. In this particular cavernous floor, it's clearly way over to the left.

Discussion / Re: Assembly Mod Slots
« on: May 15, 2011, 02:32 »
Another question about how mods are handled: the wiki mentions being able to craft Nanofiber Skin Cybernetic Armor. However, when I actually try to assemble it, I first get the prompt about turning it into Nanofiber Armor, which I reject, then a line about how it can't take another one of those mods despite having two ranks of Whizkid.
It seems like there's some interesting behavior when putting mods on before having both levels of Whizkid-- I DID put the first mod on before getting Whizkid(2)... Did I break something in the process, am I supposed to turn it into Nanofiber first, or has it been changed so that Cybernetic can't be given Nanofiber Skin?

No backpack, but a few versions back, you could find the chainsaw. It's actually just an ordinary exotic that happens to have a guaranteed spawn in the normal mode.
Edit: Confirmed, you can still find the chainsaw randomly in the latest version. Happened to find this specific one on... Phobos Hell L21 in an Ao100 run.
