PS: Is World of Darkness free?

Nope, sorry. If you wanna check it out, the site is .

Great system once you get into it.  I prefer it much over D&D and other d20 games.

That's cool!  Good to see you two are getting along, as I love DoomRL and as soon as I get my video card back in (had to reload the whole thing when it died, too lazy to do it) and buy Doom III + Expansion, I'll try out DD (Hah, great initials...) as I'm VERY interested in that.  However, I don't think I'll prefer one over the other.

But y'know what'd be great?  If you two worked together..?

Discussion / How do you run?
« on: November 30, 2005, 23:05 »
I think I used it once.  Seems to have the same effect that "running" does in most RLs: it moves you in the specified direction until you are blocked by a wall/monster.  Doesn't move you any faster in-game, it just skips the turns for you so it takes less time for you.  Useful once you've cleared a floor in some RLs where hallways can get quite large, but DoomRL levels (and rooms) are pretty small.

Pretty funny that you don't remember adding it in, though. XD  Maybe it really DOES have a mind of it's own..?  Would explain why you can't get it to compile right sometimes, and other times it will.

At the moment, I'm working on a World of Darkness campaign (role playing game by White Wolf) and playing a lot of Resident Evil 4 (PS2 version).  i'm still playing quite a bit of DoomRL, checking the forums, and even updating the Wiki, though.  Can't wait for 0.9.9!

Discussion / DoomRL Forum's design got appriciated :-)

That's very cool!  I agree with Turgor: simple designs are the best.  This one's simple, yet it's still very cool.  The only suggestion I have is trying to add transparency to the avatars.  Against the grey posts you can't tell, but on the black posts you can still see a grey box.  It's not bad or stupid-looking, but I'm annoyed by the smallest things. XD

That's pretty funny.  I do think some companies just reserve a lot of strange stuff just in case.  Seriously, you'd be amazed what odd domains you can find taken.

Yeah, Commanders are a joke with Coward on, and Arachs become considerably less scary.  I like taking two points because it gives you even better accuracy than you'd have in Cautious with no points, which is pretty damn nice.  I'm pretty sure that three points would garuntee all hits even in Coward, but I've never bothered to try it.  That reminds me, Kornel, you really should put some better docs on the tactics.  I didn't even know you could change for my first four games, and then I only figured out what they did through trial-and-error in the next ten or so.

Congrats!  Man, I must have the worst luck ever, as I can never find any plasma ammo, and once I start to get lower, rocket ammo is extremely scarce.  I never find any rares, either.  I mean, yeah, I've got the advanced launcher from The Wall every time I've made it that far, but I think aside from that the only yellow I've EVER found was, like... An advanced pistol or something, when I was on level 10+.

Anyways, good job, nice win ratio too!

Pre-0.9.9 / My first run....

That was a version or two ago, so I dunno what changes have happened since then...  Anyways, you're seriously underestimating my ability to suck.  I mean, I'm better now.  I get to 15+ on a good amount of my runs now.  But I still haven't even SEEN Cyber.  Anyways, once again, great job.  I think The Wall's difficulty is horribly blown out of proportion myself, (lost about 10% the first time I did it) but for your first game you're awesome to even MAKE IT there.

Wow.  You made it to Arachs on your first run?  I couldn't even beat Hell's Arena my first five times! XD  Geez, and you took down The Wall, too.  Good job.  Now try again!  Bet you'll dominate in no time.

I like the idea, but you might have to put some limiters on it.  I mean, wont everyone just dump their points into Son of a Gun and whatever it is that buff your melee damage?  Unless melee gets fixed.  But, hey, I suppose you'd still be playing through the game with no traits, and that's hard enough.  Ah well.

Cool.  Sounds like a good read!  I'm mostly interested in DoomRL, but the rest of your work's equal or higher quality, right?  If so, good!

Yeah, pressing U (note the caps) while standing on a weapon makes you fully unload that weapon and put its ammo in your inventory (or if your inventory is full, it takes as much as you can hold).  If you are not standing on a weapon, then it prompts you with a list of your uneqipped weapons. Selecting one unloads it in the same manner.  Valuable inventory space saver, but I suppose when you really get down to it it doesn't help that much.  If you're lucky enough to get ahold of multiple BFGs, however, keep extras.  They hold 100 cells, which is more than you can hold in a stack (50).

Anyway, congrats!

I had a REAL hard time with ammo on the lower levels.  I had to juggle the Plasma, Rockets, and Chaingun like crazy to make sure I didn't run out yet didn't get creamed.  I don't know where the heck all those rockets that normally spawn went!  I even nabbed EVERY rocket up on Arena, Armory, and Wall, but by the time I hit floor 15 or so I was out!  Due to that, I thought Spider's Lair was a godsend, especially since it also got me my BFG and netted me some Plasma cells (which I was out of as well...)

I feel REALLY stupid about my death.  I had an extra large medkit and TWO Phase Devices!  As soon as I hit fire I noticed my 2% health, but by then it was too late.  I guess I got a little overconfident having just obtained a BFG and some fresh ammo, but my problem was that I was trying TOO hard not to hurt myself, so I ended up spreading the rockets around a bit much and didn't up killing anything.  In my defense, though, I did get knocked into a pool of lava and didn't really have the time (or space once I got surrounded) to move.  Oh, and those 10 enemies I didn't kill?  All Arachs, all onscreen.  That was a terrible starting point.  But again, it was my fault and it was stupid.

One thing I've noticed through my games, though, the third level of Eagle Eye is completely unnecessary.  With two points you can leave your tactics on Coward perfectly and miss maybe one out of every hundred shots.  Which reduces your damage considerably.  With Red Armor and three levels of Tough as Nails thrown into the mix, I never even saw my health move unless I was getting gang raped.  Oh, and yeah, I switch-powerleveled twice on level 4 or so.

I'm definitely getting better, but I still don't see how ANYONE could call this game EASY!  Also, exactly how are you guys getting so many cells?  I've had more than one person talk about how cells are everywhere, but I hardly have enough to clear a room of Arachs.

Anyways, I may not have even seen Cyberdemon yet, but I'm still proud of this! XD

(but seriously, there's enough plasma cells in most games.. unless you get very unlucky.)

I can barely get enough cells to take down a room of Arachs, let alone have spares for the BFG later. I guess I'm just REALLY unlucky.

Calculating: i know those explosion ranges..

That's a good point. I completely forgot to think that any reasonably intelligent player (not me) would have all the explosion ranges memorized.  But I guess when you're blasting stuff in a hurry you could notice when you otherwise wouldn't that you're in the blast radius.  Maybe it would be a warning and you have to confirm fire?  I dunno.  Thanks for pointing out the lameness of this idea. XD

Quoting: Turgor
Splasher: you mean shooting at the ground? yeah that would be great... offcourse, you realize that enemies could do this too right? so maybe dodging would become worthless.. hmm i think it would change the game a lot if this was implemented.

Well, since it's a trait and not actually a full-game tweak.  Maybe give it as a special ability that only SOME enemies have, if any.  Like maybe Cacos can do it, but Imps can't?  And besides, for non-explosion attacks this wouldn't make any difference, so dodging would still be perfectly viable against almost all enemies.  Perhaps add a small miss chance to this, as well, making your rocket keep going past that square?  Like a 5% or so, maybe modified by your traits and tactics?  Perhaps even have a higher modifier for deeper floor numbers?  Nah, that'd seem too much like the FLOOR was dodging you... XD

Quoting: Turgor
edit: how could you not notice a caco? it's a big friggin O!!

Yeah, but it's also the exact same color as blood. If you massacre an entire room, then you're picking up the spoils, and a Caco that missed the previous fight sneaks into the room and moves ONLY on blood-tiles, it's pretty easy to miss.

I'd also like to point out that the chainsaw stun was NOT my idea!  It was someone else's, brought up in another thread.  I'm too lazy to go find out whose right now, but I just wanted to make sure I don't take credit for someone ELSE'S idea!
