Post Mortem / Re: [U|AoHu+AoOC|YAVP] Everyman diamond
« on: April 03, 2013, 15:37 »
It is possible to get Conqueror multiple times; it just never gives you Conqueror for clearing all special levels in AoOC.  It didn't in the previous version either.

I see, no idea then. This seems to be one of those grey areas introduced by dual-angels, there could be some weird interactions between them.

Nevertheless, I do remember there being talk of nerfing it...  Then again, Thelaptop seems to be talking about nerfing everything these days.  :P

I hope it's not nerfed, this was a fun way to play AoHu. True enough, by the time you get vampyre Mr. Doomguy forgets he's human sometimes and facetanks missiles, but it's interesting that you can choose to purposely damage yourself to guarantee berserk and possibly save your butt.

I think a better long term strategy is something like 2Dev's approach to AoHu anyway, but he was starting from the beginning of course. Ammochain + whizkid + HR/DM in that order. Maybe it's just confirmation bias but the amount of mod packs that dropped on AoHu were ridiculous (same with 2Dev's mortem), I wonder if it's cranked higher on this mode.

I think it's interesting that you got the Diamond badge even though it doesn't credit you as having gotten Conqueror.  (I would have thought this badge would be impossible to get on AoOC, since it denies you Conqueror!)

Good call, maybe it doesn't show repeated instances of Conqueror? I've gotten it before.. Otherwise I don't know. Conqueror was described as "completing all generated levels" and not "all generated levels in a standard game", after all.

I have a feeling this wasn't intended; in fact, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Devteam removed that exploit for AoHu/Berserker.  I guess not.  :)

That was an exploit? It makes sense why it would work; there's a lot more damage sources that do "over one-third of your maximum health" in this. I take advantage of arch-viles on non-AoHu since their flames will always trigger my berserk.

Regardless, this looks like it was a crazy run!  You must have had some great skill/luck to pull this off.  Congrats!  :D  Also, that looks pretty ballsy, going toe-to-toe with the Mastermind instead of just nuking her!  :o

Thanks, even with the strategy in mind I had to learn how to respect the enemies and restart dozens of times.. xD I think standard AoMr N! is easier so I will try that next.

Wow...

Ironically, this is very good level. Arch-viles don't care about medkits, phase devices or armor, and clearing this level type gives an enormous amount of XP.

33
Wow, those unlucky "wrong-killing-source-processing" events just keep pursuing you. I think Kornel should have this issue as #1 bugfix for the next version :)

Anyway great job. I managed to complete the same challenge in beta but I used standart "Get HR2+DM, and just run through everything until the mastermind using shotgun" tactic. You managed to pull it off the hard way though.

I was probably going to do something similar, but I saw the nuclear plasma rifle and my eyes lit up, lol

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is definitely one of the most fun/tough dual angels so far. Based on the requirements for everyman diamond, I figured the only way you're ever killing AoD is to go for a melee build. From there I realized that AoHu + Berserk is ridiculously powerful in the end levels, you can go berserk from just about being sneezed at, and once you get Vampyre only former captains/commandos and arachnotrons can instakill you if you're not careful. It's still very tense though, as one false move will almost certainly get you killed.

Something I discovered on accident is that Azrael's Scythe special attack does not drop you below 5 max HP, and I cleared the vaults as well as the lava pits using it multiple times. I could have cleared the lava pits easily by the time I got there, but I wanted to make absolutely sure. I was extra lucky with the mortuary and had a invulnerability + nuke combo to clear it out instantly. I'm actually not sure if this is intended or if you were always meant to have your max HP capped at 5. Upgrading Ironman again seemed to bump my HP back up a bit.

The strategy here:
1. Try to take cover someplace and shotgun to death whatever is nearby. Advance by blind firing around the area you're taking cover next. It's really easy to get unlucky here and die.
2. Don't wander around until you're level 3 where you can get berserker. You're going to level up fast unless you get a terrible level type like a cacodemon cave or something.
3. Collect as many things as possible. This run I managed to get Conqueror by collecting an unholy amount of medkits, but you can simply phase into the middle in the vaults though it's luck based.
4. Your starting equipment is enough to do AoD, given that you get to level 4. Just assemble a ballistic red armor and AoD's attacks will only do 1 damage per hit.
5. Mortuary is very dangerous, Limbo felt easier even with the nightmare enemies because clearing the middle meant you could take your time luring enemies little by little to the middle which has solid corner cover and refilling your health back up. I cleared Limbo a few times by using a skull to reduce the number of corpses first and securing the middle. I also did the same with a BFG10K on another attempt, but that's really rare.
6. Vaults are luck based unless you can nuke the place while invulnerable, get a lucky phase or have enough medkits to spam Azrael's Scythe until everything dies.
7. Lava pits need one/two envirosuits to do, but not as difficult to do as Mortuary/Limbo otherwise.

Things that always trigger berserk in 1st hit:
1. Walking, not running into a tile of lava
2. Direct shotgun blast from sergeants
2. Revenant rocket (almost always)
3. Archvile flame attack
4. Mancubi rockets
5. Direct hits from baron of hell projectiles
6. Rocket jumping (!)
7. AoD

I'll try standard AoHu someday, at least UV Phobos Anomaly is much more manageable than N!, I don't even wanna look at ArchAoHu though x)

--------------------------------------------------------------

I had godlike luck this run, during the beginning I was using a shotgun/double shotgun to kill everything from a safe distance, and I got an exotic nuclear plasma rifle pretty early on thanks to those treasure rooms spawned by a level message. From there I carefully killed everything, making sure I only get 1 enemy in sight at a time. I got a nano pack as a reward for hell's armory, allowing me to get a powered armor. I even found an invulnerability globe close enough to the mortuary which let me walk to the nuclear BFG. My weird upgrade path was just me getting traits as needed to make my nuclear plasma rifle as beefy as possible, in the end I got A1B1P1 on it.

But alas, it was not meant to be, overloading my nuclear weapons seems to have counted as a melee kill. I was fairly certain that was the only time I didn't have a weapon equipped. T_T

Discussion / Re: Damageless hells arena N! ?
« on: April 02, 2013, 13:34 »
Damageless probably has a lot of luck involved no matter what, but here's the strategy I was thinking on using:

Grab a a shotgun (preferably a combat shotgun as a rare drop), a chaingun, and enough ammo. You'd need a lucky spawn so you can take cover safely, then blindfire cacodemons to lure them in and corner shoot them with the shotgun.

Once you can set up this situation, hit them until they're mortally wounded/almost dead and switch to chaingun as they get in melee range, this way they will die on the same spot. Now you can stand on top of it to keep it from respawning and blindfire the next enemy in or just wait. This way the worst that could happen is that two cacodemons get into your line of sight, or your corpse stack revives in the turns it takes to corner shoot the next enemy to death. Getting the right angles so that corpses can be gibbed can be inconsistent, so this should be a backup strategy in case there's more than 1 corpse hanging around. Hope this helps~

Discussion / Re: On exploiting dualangels...
« on: April 02, 2013, 10:50 »
There's no creativity in getting something via AoOC. Rush 7 levels, win. Optionally take nuclear BFG from Mortuary/Limbo. Skill, strategy, weapon choice? Meh, just run and run.
Same with AoMC - free damage and accuracy boost?Sure, why not.

Getting old Marksman Diamond via Vampire - now that was creative.

To be fair, you still need some form of strategy, it's just some of them are pretty much just luck once you figure out exactly what it is you need to do.

I'm just going to throw out there that in AoOC, 99% of the attempts are still probably going to die on level 1, but you only need that one lucky game to win in just a few minutes.  I wouldn't say that combining Angels with AoOC makes things easier per se; it's just that with the game so much shorter, it makes it faster to just keep restarting until you get a lucky starting position and then breeze through the rest of it.

This. You're also exempt from thinking of a long term strategy: planning out what to keep in your inventory and what special levels to visit, making sure you're ready for anomaly/cyberdemon etc. Dual-angels in AoOC are actually pretty fun and VERY useful since you get to practice the last parts of the game with typically worse equipment, so I'd definitely like to have the option of having AoOC dual angels, even if the badges are blocked.

38
I believe I wrote about this in my both strongman diamond posts.

1) its ok to melee-kill someone while holding ranged weapon, kills count towards fist-kills.
2) if any monster dies from any other source (i.e. demons die in lava, or even mosters tele-killing each other [and that happened to me]) while you have a weapon in your hands - kills count towards that weapon.

Well, maybe I should write small article about this on wiki, I just don't have any spare time at all.

That'd be awesome. I'd love to know more about subtle details like these in DoomRL. I wish things like angel runs in general had a few more details so you can better devise a strategy for it. For example for Hell Arena Diamond I didn't know a Large globe spawned in the final wave of the arena level in AoB; that changes a lot!

Nightmare! / [N!|AoMr/AoOC|11%|YAVP] More dual-angel hilarity
« on: April 01, 2013, 15:22 »
A little backstory: I've been trying AoMr on nightmare, and I've gotten pretty good at getting past Phobos Anomaly. There's a couple of ways to escape the death-trap, all of them require that you get lucky with some kind of drop or powerup. I've escaped with a phase device, shockwave pack, berserk pack, invulnerability, and one time I even had invulnerability + nuke! Afterwards I simply got too cocky and tried out different rare assemblies only to find out to my horror that assemblies like demolition ammo and energy gun lower your max damage, and in a sharpshooter build having powerful knockback was my lifeblood. So after botching multiple runs by doing a little too much experimenting, I decided to try this approach just to see if it could be done:

Basically my strategy was to use Intuition to find any berserk packs, invulnerability globes or computer maps on the way to the stairs. If I grabbed a computer map I'd check if a nuke or homing phase device was on the level. If I can't find either safely, I just go straight to the stairs with anything I managed to grab. Most, if not all the kills were from collateral damage, which allowed me to level up HR to make the most out of the powerups and dodge enemies.

In this run I secured a homing phase device when I got to the mortuary, so I used that to phase to the top right which had the nuclear BFG. From there on I skipped to the stairs until I got to the SM. I got decent invulnerability globes and berserk pack drops, which is why I could nuke the SM while still invulnerable. Since I didn't have any extra nukes I just suicided on JC.. RIP Stephen Ward

Don't get me wrong, AoMr is really fun once you have a solid strategy for it, but doing quick runs through AoOC are quite fun in their own right, so I decided to experiment a bit. In fact, I'm probably going back to plain AoMr again, I just didn't want to burn myself out with repeated N! AoMr attempts; it requires a lot of patience from me.

Congratulations, good to see you finally got it. Your report raises as few questions though:

I don't see the connection... why useless on HMP with BAD2? Why useless at all, for that matter?

How so? The only advantage I see is 'melee resistance +30%' (which is a blessing against everything on a Strongman run, I should think), nothing against plasma, no other tricks up its armoured sleeves...

Knockback is almost never an issue by the time you get levels on badass. In HMP enemies are slightly less accurate too, which means you're less likely to get hit and consequently get knocked back by a very high damage roll. Of course, one or two are fine so you can build stuff like the ballistic vest, but I must have gotten around 5 which was frustrating. Upgrading a fresh armor with it gave me a marginal benefit at best, and it would be detrimental later on if I wanted to use something like a power or agility mod. Fireproof armor uses tech mods and were rather tempting, but the -30% melee damage penalty would only make it useful for wearing it temporarily while escaping from mancubi/revenants or something like that.

+30% melee resistance makes a big difference for hell knights and barons, specially if you just ran out of berserk time. You want to avoid plasma damage altogether by luring them around a corner whenever possible. Thankfully you can drop items to pull them in where you want them.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I think dropping any weapons I wielded worked; I hit u on accident a few times on top of a gun and I would unwield it immediately.

RNG was NOT very kind to me (until the last floors). I got a few decent invulnerability gloves and berserk packs, but aside from that I only got the bare minimum at the beginning which is a berserk pack on level 2 and a ton of medkits on level 3 to deal with demons and imps. I got tons of tech mods, which were mostly useless for mitigating knockback when you're in HMP difficulty with 2x badass. Ballistic armor is dangerous because of barrels and imp fireballs but it's quite useful to assemble one if you get Agility/Tech mods from chained court, it will make hell knights and barons much more manageable early on.

On the bright side, it seems that as long as you get past level 3-4 or so and find globes and medkits to heal up, you can live with not getting the best drops. The new layout for chained court seems doable even with fists only since no enemies will be hidden behind a lava pool, and aside from the mods it's a good way to level up with the sheer number of enemies.

I wasn't sure if a full win was needed so I was worried when I had to skip limbo; I simply didn't have the right equipment. If a skull didn't get rid of 90% of the corpses within the first few turns, my armor would vaporize and the run ends.

I DID find a nuke which basically opened the option of going to lava pits, the catch being I didn't have any envirosuits, and mashing on phase devices sounded too risky. I decided to do this:

Quote
On level 22 he assembled a fireproof boots!
On level 22 he arrived at Mt. Erebus.

It's hardly foolproof, but at least the boots will last until you find solid ground. I had a few close calls with running out of berserk while being shot at by mancubi and revenants, but after clearing the middle it turns out a Lava Armor spawned which turned out to guarantee the win. The lava elemental was almost harmless, SM got nuked and JC got punched in the face. The start is a little more luck reliant than an AoB run, but still a pretty fun challenge.

42
This was certainly true for previous versions, but not for this one.  I've played games in this version where I killed things with my fists while wielding a pistol and still got the Sunrise Iron Fist medal.  My understanding is that, for this version, Kornel changed it so that it only credits the kill to the weapon in your hand if something dies in the same turn that you fired the weapon.  This means that, for example, if you happen to fire your Rocket Launcher at a wall at the same time that a Demon wanders into lava at the opposite end of the map, it credits the Demon's death to the Rocket Launcher and you lose your Strongman conduct.  However, if you aren't firing it, and just happen to have the Rocket Launcher in your hands when the Demon dies, you can keep your Strongman conduct.

Appuru, did you fire a weapon at any time during your run?  Any time at all?  (Particularly if you got the message "You hear the scream of a freed soul" at any of those times)

I highly doubt it, the most I tried to do was see if I could punch crates to open them (so I tried to press F but you get a "no ranged weapon" message). I did keep a pistol wielded while punching things for a short time though since I pressed u to equip a pistol on accident. I used the skulls I grabbed from the city of skulls to clear limbo as well.

EDIT: And of course, sebsequent attempts have had terrible, terrible luck. I must have angered the RNG gods for missing this chance x)

43
Something spawned in lava/acid, or a demon ran into it? Or got shot by another monster?

I thought the only condition was use only your fists, not to avoid deaths from other means. If this wasn't the case nuking the Cyberdemon would invalidate the run, and there's mortems nuking the Cyberdemon while getting the badge (unless this was changed after 0.9.9.6)

44
So, any advice on how to make absolutely sure you will get the badge? I'm pretty sure I ONLY used fists. I might have picked up a pistol on accident by pressing 'u' to use a medpack while a pistol was underneath (I hadn't noticed it dropped underneath after killing a former human).

I got a nano pack on Deimos Lab, I promptly turned my red armor into a powered armor, it worked wonders for this. I could do Limbo thanks to the lava as well, I had two envirosuits so I could basically retreat to the lava while my armor regenerated.

Oh well =(

omg to the RNG man, a jackhammer and a shielded armor in just the first 2 levels?
I'm pretty sure it would be almost impossible without these.

Early levels in Overconfidence are true hell anyway unless the RNG throws pain elemental caves at you or uber weapons.

Still gratz, 20 tries is pretty good, personally I have never even found those 2 overpowered items. Some day...

PS: The only really good thing with overconfidence is that runs "can" be done in one sitting. Even in nightmare.

There's definitely a luck element involved, but you can tell when you're screwed pretty quickly. In hindsight, you could probably startscum and get a lot of "good starts": super shotgun, jackhammer, any decent exotics/uniques or like you said a pain elemental cave. It IS pretty fun when you get a terrible spawn and manage to slip away though =)

There's more upsides too, AoOC/AoSh is pretty much redundant in the first levels, and IIRC you automatically start with the assault shotgun equipped which saves you some time, allowing you to take cover sooner and corner shoot everything to death.
