Delphine Software - Another World

One of the first cinematic games; and it has amazing graphics for it's time.
(very hard, though!)

Thanks for inspiration for this evening!

Web Programmer

Skills needed
  • good knowledge of PHP/Python/MySQL

Responsible for
  • writing a scoreboard and player database ( parsing of score.wad/player.wad )
  • writing rankings, charts and handling of player data
  • designing a fun and exciting system of browsing the forementioned data
  • maintenace of the system once it's completed, integration into the forum

Difficulty : medium
Responsibility : medium
Time investment : medium
Currently on team : NO ONE

Hi Kornel,
first, to introduce myself: During my university times, I was doing some side-job PHP/MySQL programming. One of these was an application for maintaining contact databases, exported from MS Outlook and imported via CSV files. Further funcionality allowed searching within this database by text-parsed criteria, allowing several criteria in a single text line.

This is why I consider myself to be able to do such parsing of those .wad files, once I know their structure.

In my current full-time job, I'm heavily involved in data warehouse building, which requires me to build a sufficient DB structure for quick data reading, and eventually building comprehensive reports upon these DWs. If you ever heard of Business Intelligence, you know what I'm talking about :).

For this reasons, I trust myself to be able to create a quickly-responding DB structure of the parsed data, and, if the data amount is too high to be quick enough, I have experience with data aggregation, which further enhances the DB access.

Now, it's been quite some time since my last PHP experience (about four years), but I know that I can get back on this train quickly. Also, I have no experience with Python - but again, I learn quickly when I find something interesting.
Also, to be honest, I'm no graphic designer - I know CSS and can well use any standing CSS for displaying the results, but I simply am not too good with creating any new graphics. Also, my availability differs from time to time - my full-time simply needs to have priority.

Now, from what I know about the .wad file structures, I assume that you'd like something like a player.wad and score.wad, with _all_ players included, and with similar filtering functions as present now in DoomRL, with abilities to display individual player's .wad files, as well as their aggregations based on whatever conditions. Is that right?

If you have any particular ideas about the stats display and forum integration, go ahead and post them. If you are also willing to share the .wad structure with me, I can set up my own free webspace and try to get some work done on the parser and the subsequent DB work.

With regards,
ZicherCZ

Got robbed of Czech republic's top score recently, and I _will_ claim it back!

The first win is always the most precious one - congratulations, and keep rocking! :)

Hi,

I found a minor, yet annoying bug when accessing the Traits screen from ingame ("T" command, not tested during level-up).
When a trait that the player doesn't currently have available for picking (in grey text) is selected, then the ESC key doesn't leave the screen back to the game, and stays in the screen.
The player then has to scroll to an available talent (any written in red, seems that whether the player already has the trait, doesn't matter) for ESC to work.

Requests For Features / Re: New level event ideas
« on: July 13, 2011, 09:21 »
Hope it was not posted earlier, but let me get a shot.

After the player kills the last monster, a slightly modified message appears:

You feel relatively safe ... for now.

After clearing a level. 30-90 seconds game-time pass, when Arch-Vile(s) comes up the stairs (i.e. is generated close to them) and starts reviving corpses.

The arrival time and perhaps the number of Viles (1 on ITYTD and HNTR, 1-2 HMP, 2-3 UV and N! ?) should be subject to the difficulty level (the higher level, the sooner Vile(s) arrive). Also, this should not happen too early before Viles can normally appear (3 floors before, perhaps?), and never on special levels.

The arriving Viles don't provide XP (to prevent farming).

This will notify the player to get the hell out of the level, leaving scattered powerups behind.

And perhaps, to give a warning, another message pops up when the Viles arrive, perhaps along the lines:

You feel a great evil coming!

All in all, I think that this will really add to the horror feeling, and I beleive it would not be difficult to code either.

EDIT: Of course, the player should _not_ be aware of this level event before he clears the level, in any way.

0.9.9.3 / [M|AoB|84%|YAVP] Another angel down!
« on: July 13, 2011, 04:33 »
Pretty much a very basic and standard AoB run.
I got lucky to get the Chained Court already on L4. Since then, fun times started.

Observations:
Tactical armor plus tactical boots are quite an effective combination - movement speed at 0.64s when cautious and without a single HR allowed me to outrun nearly everything. Too bad I found my first steel boots somewhere around L19 ...
Vampyre + A pain elemental = 200% health in no time flat. Thanks to GameHunter for this tip :).

Then, I just ran to Cybie before he even had a chance to fire a single rocket. On the third cut, berserk kicked in and then I just enjoyed the victory and my second Angel down.

Now, what next? A UV win? Another angel? I had a great shot at Ao100, dying on L94 - I may try to get this one done ...

AoMC seems to me as designed for rapid-fire builds. Too bad I'm way too unskilled with these builds ;).

* ZicherCZ  searches for the first former captain to come by ...

778
* ZicherCZ takes out his BFG and rises from the dead on L94
*Real* marksmen quickly find out that they need no to be marksmen ;)

@thelaptop: Thanks. For me, it's the very first Angel won. Well, given time, I may get a shot on the other ones as well (if time permits - Dungeon Crawl tourney is coming close, and I have quite a spot to defend :) ).

779
Now this is a strange combination.

Anyway: Well done!

Perhaps you feel safer in Death's embrace than in Hell?
Feature proposal: "You feel relatively safe now" after each and every death :).

And thanks :).

780
So happy to finally get my first Angel completed! :)

The only notable thing about this game is that I found pretty much no helpful equipment. Bulked red armour as best, no pistol exotics or uniques, a single speedloader. And in the end, I even ran out of ammo once ...
No wonder I ran down the stairs when I saw them in later levels. Until Hellgate, however, I maintained a 100% kill rate.
At times, I was lucky to have found large medpacks when I needed them, and a nuke. Without it, with the ammo left, I'd be down for the count for sure.
