Well, it turned out to not be so spectacular, but I did what I set out to do.  :)  I survived just long enough to get the last medal for clearing Hell's Arena in AoMs at N! difficulty and died on the next level.  :P  It was good enough to get me Heroic Diamond!  :D

I recorded a video of myself playing through Hell's Arena here.

What I did was I stocked up on shells on level one, (taking advantage of N! spawning of Sergeants) and got myself Dodgemaster, so I could dodge the Cacodemon's shots and also outwalk the demons.  (I also entered HA while berserk which may have helped a little)  I still suck at avoiding damage, but I was still (just barely) able to do it.  :)  In the end, I died because I got cornered by multiple Cacodemons and there was no room to maneuver my Dodgemaster ability.  Oh well...

So, I decided to try a different strategy this time...  I left my Strength low so I could put more focus on Dexterity.  It's an expensive investment, since Dexterity points cost more, but I was hoping that the increased dodge chance would pay off in the long run.  It meant that I had to spend a lot more time kiting the larger monsters, but I was still doing pretty well and even as late as Night 12, I still had a good collection of resources.

The end came pretty unexpectedly.  I was running ahead of that horde of monsters you see in the mortem, (including a demon) and I had a priceless opportunity to get a swing at a Wraith that was severely wounded and at the front of the group.  I had 6 hitpoints, but I was berserk at the time.  I thought I had a good chance of killing it with one hit.  I thought that, even if it got a swing at me, (which wasn't certain) there was a good chance it would miss, and even if it hit, I really didn't expect it to be able to do 6 damage through my extra defense from being berserk.  Looking at the game and analyzing it afterward, I still think my death had a really low probability to happen.

Oh well...  on the plus side, it's my highest scoring game so far!  Highest number of kills too; almost 2000!  :D

Berserk! / Crash! D:

I was playing BerserkRL, doing fairly well, Night 10 with decent equipment, and the game suddenly crashed.  :(  It displayed the text of the error message right on the game screen and I copy/pasted it from there, so there's a bit of in-game text mixed in with the error message, but I'm sure you can figure it out.  :)  (I also made a copy of the log.txt file too just in case)

Post Mortem / [E|98%|YAVP] Untouchable Cross! :D

Let this be an indicator of how bad I am at avoiding damage that this is my first time getting the medal for taking less than 50 damage in a game and I had to do it on easy mode.  :P

I don't even remember when I started this game; I just loaded up DRL today and there was a saved game there that I'd forgotten about and I decided to finish it off.  :)  (It was on Hell 2 and had only taken 9 damage so far!)  I took 4 more damage before the end from a Cacodemon that was on the other side of a wall which I broke through with a Shockwave pack.  (I thought I was far away enough that it wouldn't be able to shoot me; oh well...)

I could have easily gotten 100% kills and conqueror, but by the end, I figured I should just stick to the original goal and I homing phased out on the second last level, so I could be invulnerable against the Mastermind.  :)  On a related note, I just realized for the first time that the Missile Launcher has a full reload option; going up against the Mastermind while invulnerable was the first time such a feature was welcome.  :D

I now have all badges except Chessmaster's Cross!  Back in my heyday, I would probably have tried to play some spectacular game to get the last one, but I don't know if anyone's paying attention any more, so maybe I'll just play a short, perfunctory game just for the sake of getting it.  :P

I just discovered an unread PM in my inbox from April that I had no idea about!  :o  My profile settings say to "always" send me an e-mail notification when I receive a PM, but I don't think I got anything.  (Unless it got caught by my spam filter?)  Anyway, I don't know if anyone is looking after this forum these days, but I thought I'd mention it in case anyone else is having this issue.

Berserk! / [0.8.5|Endless|12|YASD] Run!

So, after my last run failed because I put too many levels into fancy stuff like Whirlwind, I decided to focus purely on running and then put all my levels into Ironman after that.  It worked very well, especially once I started putting levels into Willpower so I could replenish my energy faster.  (I probably should have put more levels into Willpower, actually, but I wanted to see how high I could make my strength go)  :)

Much of my strategy involved running ahead of the mobs of enemies so I would only have to take one or two at a time.  (This became especially important when the game was spamming Mandagore spawns all over the place, but fortunately, they're relatively slow, so I was able to kite them somewhat)  Any time the hordes built up to unmanageable levels, I would hit them with a bomb or cannon blast to thin their numbers.  This strategy turned out to not be the most sustainable, though, because in the last couple of nights, they were spawning far faster than I could kill them and I ran myself out of bombs and cannonballs, and by the end, I was wondering if I should have taken Whirlwind after all.

Toward the end, I got myself completely surrounded by some densely packed enemies and my only way out was very painful.  I dropped a bomb into their midst at point-blank range which almost gave me a path out and I started to run, but a nearby Wraith started raising corpses around me and my pain level was too high from the bomb to fight them effectively, so I had to use a second bomb to clear those out, (which was also quite painful) and I expended my energy running away until the pain levels subsided enough to fight again.  I held on for a little while longer after that, but eventually they surrounded me again and I was finally done for.  (That 23 kill combo listed in the mortem happened right at the end from a well-placed cannon blast)  :)

Berserk! / [0.8.5|Endless|8|YASD] Too much Whirlwind?

On a whim, I decided to play this game the other day for no particular reason.

This feels like the best attempt I've made at it, but according to the score, it's only my second best.  I think I would have survived longer if I hadn't been so focused on getting the Whirlwind ability.  I was doing better using my energy to run away to take enemies one at a time.  Even with level 2 Whirlwind, I wasn't able to take out enemies reliably enough...  Like I would have 8 surrounding me and the Whirlwind attack would take 50 energy to kill 2 or 3 of them; it just wasn't worth it.  Oh well, lesson for next time, I guess.

Post Mortem / [U|AoCn|YAAM] Malicious Daredevil

So, yesterday, I got a request from NeonBuddha to record an Angel of Confidence video, so I decided to see if I could get Daredevil Platinum while I was at it and I was successful!  :)

I decided to do it with a Malicious Blades build, but quickly came to regret that choice...  My reasoning at the time was that I wanted to see if I could get Conqueror while I was at it, so I wanted to get Dodgemaster early on so I could deal with the Shambler(s) and the relatively early Cyberdemon.  It was helpful in evading damage, but not so much at killing my enemies, so I had ammo and health worries for about the first half of the game...  That all changed when I hit level 7 and could finally pick up the master trait and everything became considerably easier after that, with my dual-wielded Chainswords!  :D  (Later replaced by Azrael's Scythe)  :)

I had to abandon the idea of getting Conqueror very early on, when I exhausted my supplies trying to clear Deimos Lab.  I was in no shape to defeat two Shamblers and I didn't want to risk a game in which I found two power mods and two bulk mods so early.  (Perfect for my plan of dual-wielding Chainswords!)  :D  Interestingly, it still credits me as having completed that level even though I didn't unleash the Shamblers.  Other than that, I skipped every special level except for Unholy Cathedral, (a must for any melee build) and Lava Pits, which I totally didn't intend to do except that I happened to find a nuke and invulnerability, so I figured, why not?  :)

Nightmare! / [N!|AoLT|57%|YAVP] Gutt's Heart

So, after failing a bunch of times to get some more Angelic badges, I decided to try something a little easier and went for the Gutt's Heart medal.  This meant going for the secret guaranteed Dragonslayer from Unholy Cathedral that I believe is now common knowledge.  This also meant that I had to do Hell's Arena damageless at Nightmare!  I decided the easiest way of doing this, short of AoMC, (which would mean a slow, painful slog through the whole game and an even more painful melee-only endgame) was to play Angel of Light Travel for the speed boost to help keep me ahead of Demons and Cacodemons to maneuver them into corpse-stacking positions.  I went into HA with the shellbox I started with, 3 stacks of shells, and 2 med packs that I kept around for the stamina boost in case I needed to run.  (I finished with just over 50 shells to spare!  36 of which were in the shellbox)

Hell's Arena was the hardest part; using Int 2 to keep Cacodemons from getting any free shots on me and hoping that the shotgun knocked enemies the right number of squares away, so they would stack properly.  Chained Court was also fairly challenging, as always; I hadn't been looking forward to dealing with the Arena Master, but I couldn't pass up the Chainsaw on a melee build game.  :)  After that, I alternated between Chainsaw and Shotgun for a while, until I got Blademaster trait and then it was pretty much a Chainsaw-fueled stair-dive from then on.  I also happened to pick up a Hatred Skull in Abyssal Plains, which I used to ensure that my berserk continued in UC long enough for me to pick up DS.

I got Gutt's Heart once before in a different install, but I wanted to get the medal properly, so it's grouped with the rest of my collection.  :)  I'm up to 41 out of 43 medals now!  The only ones I'm missing are Untouchable Cross and Chessmaster's Cross.

Century Lounge / [U|AoHu+Ao100|YAAM] Everyman Diamond Centurion

So recently, (12 days ago) Icy made the discovery that it's possible to get Thomas' Medal, Everyman Platinum, and Everyman Diamond in Ao100 and I've been trying to do it ever since.  This isn't a combination of challenges I had ever seriously considered before; the idea of taking Angel of Humanity, a game which is by nature, a slow, painstaking game, being careful not to ever let anything into your view, and then dragging it out over 100 levels does not really appeal to me...  but then, Sereg said some fateful words...

And now for the fateful words - if you manage to earn Thomas' Medal on Ao100, I will be very impressed. (shh, don't let Tormuse overhear >.> <.< >.>)

Damn it, Sereg!  You should know by now that I see such comments as a challenge!  :D

Anyway, that 22 hours down there was solid gameplay time spread over the last couple of weeks; any time I took a break, I saved the game and came back to it later.  I didn't bother recording a video of this one for reasons that I think are obvious.

I went back and forth a lot, trying to decide what build to go with.   I definitely wanted to be a Technician for the ability to insta-use medpacks; I correctly anticipated that that ability would save my life.  I considered Malicious Blades for the protection, but the lack of Eagle Eye or Intuition would have made a lot of the late game very difficult.  I also considered Sharpshooter, but I didn't want to be too reliant on one weapon if I ever got mobbed, (and Sharpshooter blocks SoB) so I ended up deciding to go masterless, (though I kept my options open until level 9, when I finally picked up SoB, in case I found a unique pistol or something) and I did pick up Scavenger to get myself a few extra mods, which I didn't end up really getting any benefit out of until I got a Nano pack out of the Trigun toward the end.  (I'm still disappointed that I didn't find or scavenge a single Firestorm mod in the entire game; Firestorm-modded Hyperblasters kick ass!)  :D  I think it's also worth noting that I got three Sniper mods back-to-back within two levels in the late 70's, the first ones I found in the game, one of which created a Plasmatic Shotgun which was very useful for corpse-disposal to prevent pesky Arch-Viles from reviving stuff.  :)

That Energy Shield carried me through most of the early and middle levels; things would've been a lot tougher without the 80% fire/acid/plasma protection.  It took quite a beating over time, once going as low as 44%, but I was able to repair it with the occasional Megasphere.  I had the Ballistic Shield around in case anything reached melee range, but I only used that once when a Nightmare Demon cornered me and I didn't want to shotgun it due to barrels nearby.  Before that, I was alternating between agility-modded red armour and power-modded blue armour, depending on what enemies I was facing, and toward the end, I was exclusively using the Phaseshift set, once I made a Cerberus version of the suit, which was extremely useful for the occasional slip-ups where something got a shot at me.  Before I got that Cerberus Phaseshift suit, there were two notable slip-ups that nearly got me killed.  (Sorry, I don't remember level numbers)

1)  Somewhere in the 20's or 30's, I started two tiles away from an Arch-Vile and I figured I'd be able to kill it before it could do anything to me, since it would take a few seconds to wake up and then another couple seconds to do its arm-raising thing, so I shot it with my Gatling Gun, (which at the time, wasn't tech-modded yet) and it unexpectedly got a double move on me, which it used to move one step closer and melee-attack me for 9 damage.  (No melee protection from the Energy Shield and 10 max HP meant this brought me to one hit point)  O_o

2)  Later on, (40's?  50's?) a Former Sergeant got one of those funny angles on me through a doorway where he could see me, but I couldn't see him, and he knocked me back into a pool of lava.  Fortunately, I had the Nyarlaptotep Boots on at the time, which mostly protected me from the lava damage and I had a level of TaN to protect me a little bit from the shotgun blast.  (The Energy Shield didn't)  Again, it brought me down to 1 HP.  (I could very easily have died there!)  :o

I considered turning that Nuclear Plasma Rifle into a Burst Cannon, since I've had good experiences with that in the past, but I was doing okay with it as it was and I calculated that the Burst Cannon modification would give it occasional knockback, so I figured just giving it some extra speed would be better.  I'm glad I did, especially when I started encountering the mini-bosses, Shamblers, Lava Elementals, and a Cyberdemon.  (Only one Cyberdemon?  I'm almost disappointed!)  :P  I was really nervous about encountering these guys until I realized that with all my speed-related traits, I could take a move action and fire action together in less than a second, and since Shamblers and Lava Elementals move at 1 move per second, I could safely get a shot off without them firing back any time they moved at the same time I moved.

Speaking of mini-bosses, the wiki is clearly wrong about when they start showing up; I encountered my first Lava Elemental on level 69, but the wiki says they start on level 70.  Also, according to the mortem, I had an Agony Elemental cave on level 74 and I know I encountered some before that, but the wiki says they start arriving on level 80.  I don't remember when Shamblers started showing up, but I suspect that number is off too.  I wonder if the wiki is referring to a lower difficulty level?

I came very, very close to getting an Untouchable Medal; I hovered at 199 damage for something like the last 20 levels of the game, and then it started throwing everything at me, a blast of unholy atmosphere, a Shambler, and two Lava Elementals, all on a level with no cover.  Taking damage was unavoidable and it was bad enough for me to consider using my homing phase device and just abandon getting 100% kills.  (At first, I was doing that just for the experience, but I didn't want to give up on YAAM after getting that far)  Oh well, here's a screenshot of my character screen on the last level for posterity:  :)

A ridiculously easy game which only ended prematurely due to bugs.  :(

So, after playing as Warrior and Sorcerer, I wanted to give the Rogue a try and had a heck of an easier time than the other two classes.  Having a ranged weapon with limitless ammo in a game where 90% of your enemies have melee attacks is ridiculous.  It gets extra ridiculous when you factor in the fact that the Rogue's bow gets a damage boost from Dexterity, so I don't have to bother enhancing any other stats; I can just pump everything into Dexterity to boost damage and to-hit chance at the same time!  And even if you don't factor that in, the Rogue definitely has a much higher base to-hit chance than the other classes.  I don't know the exact numbers, but I remember really struggling to hit my enemies with my staff in the Sorcerer game, at one point having 5 consecutive misses.  Compare that to my Rogue getting 17 consecutive hits despite the fact that the character screen indicated a lower to-hit bonus!  And that was all against enemies that were far from me and couldn't hit me back.

For a good chunk of the early game, I was using a bow that conferred knockback, and as much as I complained about the drawbacks of knockback in the Warrior and Sorcerer games, it's much better when you're knocking back with an infinite ammo ranged weapon; any time I encountered a room full of enemies, I could just hold my finger on the F key until they were all dead, without worrying that any of them could touch me.  Even moreso, once I got a bow that had enhanced speed on top of the Rogue's already enhanced bow speed, and those groups of monsters seemed to be moving in slow motion as I picked them off one by one before they could react.  The whole game really lacked any challenge compared to the other two classes.

My memory of the original Diablo is hazy, but it may have been like this too, so the ridiculous imbalance may just come from copying the original.  To balance things properly, the Rogue needs some kind of nerf, like reduced accuracy at longer range, or faster degradation of the bow, or reduced damage per hit, or having to purchase ammo for the bow.  Maybe we should get TheLaptop on the Devteam; he's all about nerfing.  :)

In the end, though, I was unable to win because I encountered a buttload of bugs.  (Details below)  Short version is that I was unable to win, but I didn't want to just quit, because I still wanted a mortem, but I didn't have any means of suiciding, so I scoured the early levels until I found a Hidden enemy that I had missed and I let him kill me.  :P

(What follows is a description of bugginess I encountered which may only hold interest to the Devteam)

So, it started when I decided to test the Guardian spell, which I cast using a scroll while in a room full of enemies.  It summoned a Hydra, like it's supposed to, but the Hydra didn't shoot the enemies like it's supposed to and the message log filled with error messages.  I think that something the Hydra was doing was causing the game to go into infinite loops or something, because every action I took, the game froze for several seconds and then spit out another error message.  I tried going back up the stairs, thinking that if I could get off the floor with the Hydra, maybe the problem would go away, but I was unable to use the stairs!  And when I used the look command on the stairs the description had a single word, "False."  So I tried clearing the room of monsters with my bow instead, thinking that maybe the Hydra would stop screwing up once there were no enemies to target.  This took a long time, since the game would freeze for several seconds after each shot I fired, but it didn't work and it continued freezing after each action, even after all enemies were dead, and I still couldn't use the stairs and I couldn't access a Town Portal I had cast either.  :|  I tried (still very slowly) continuing on the level, hoping that the Hydra would disappear with time, since it's only supposed to be there for a limited time to begin with, but it persisted a lot longer than it's supposed to.  I even tried shooting the Hydra to see if I could get rid of it that way, but it seemed to be invulnerable.

So, I tried saving and reloading the game to see if that would help and when I reloaded, the Hydra was gone and the game seemed to operate normally...  Until the next time I went downstairs, entering the Cave levels, when the game crashed.  I started up DiabloRL again and it seemed the game had saved itself before the crash and when I loaded it, I was in the Caves...  only there were zero monsters and no staircases, up or down.  There were plenty of items, but there seemed to be no way to continue the game.  :(  I tried using a Town Portal to get back home, which worked, and tried re-entering the Caves from the stairs again and it crashed in the same way and again, when I reloaded, I was in the same stairless Cave level.  I tried exiting and re-entering through the Town Portal again and something interesting happened; the game didn't crash, but it froze, without me being able to move or access the menu, but the in-game music was still playing and I could still access my inventory and character screens, and when I tried to forcibly close the game, instead of closing, the game suddenly dumped me back into the Caves again.  (Really weird!)  That's about the time I gave up entirely and decided to seek some means of killing my character to end the game.

I tried copying the contents of the error log into this thread and almost crashed my computer because the error log is 44 Megs of text!  O_o  I guess it was printing tons of messages during all the times it froze.  I suppose someone from the Devteam can message me if they want to see it.

tl;dr:  If you want to play this game, DON'T USE THE GUARDIAN SPELL!!!  :P

So, I decided I wanted to record a game of DiabloRL to help promote it and maybe get people more interested in it.  (And maybe, maybe prompt the Devteam to finish it?)  ;)  As in my more recent videos, I included my face in the corner of the screen, but I just realized that I forgot to reposition my lamp in the second video, so you can't see my face very well; just a creepy silhouette.  Oh well, maybe it enhances the atmosphere or something.  :P

First four levels.  (The Church)

First two levels of the Catacombs.

Since I just finished a game as a Warrior, I decided to play as a Sorcerer just to get a feel for the other end of the spectrum and really test the magical abilities rather than brute forcing my way through everything.  It makes for a more challenging game and speaks to how well balanced the characters are that I found myself relying quite heavily on my magic to survive, though this meant that I was going through mana potions like crazy.  :|  Trying to whack the enemies with my staff just wasn't effective a majority of the time, especially in the last half of the game, and I was very dependent on my Firebolt spell.  (And later Fireball)

I also found a bug that when you're wielding a weapon that has knockback, it makes all your spells have knockback too!  :o  This could potentially be a useful exploit if you want to choose when your spells have knockback, but for this game, it just caused lots of problems, since I ran into the same issue as in my Warrior game that I was just knocking back the injured enemies so that only the uninjured ones could get to me and the injured ones healed up while I was dealing with the uninjured ones.  This was a big drain on my resources which led to a crisis where I turned to shop-scumming (I don't know if that's a word, but it seems to fit)  :P  where I repeatedly left town and came back until Adria, the magic-dealer had some decent, non-knockback gear.

In the end, I died from trying to be too efficient.  :P  I had just started a new dungeon level and enemies were coming at me from all directions and I really should have used my Mana Shield spell that I had just picked up to protect me, but I wanted to use up some mana before reading the spellbook, since it gives your mana a boost when you read it, so I was continuing to pelt my enemies with Firebolts and I saw a particularly nice opportunity to use a Fireball spell to hit a group of enemies when I should have healed myself.  I just didn't expect that Stalker to get a double move on me right at the end.  :(

DiabloRL / [0.5.0|Warrior|YAVP] I should've played this sooner!

I've only played DiabloRL once before, ages ago, (2012, by the looks of it) and never got into it; barely started and just left the saved game there, unfinished.  Well, I decided to give it another try the other day and loaded it up.  My first impression was that it was buggy as hell, right up to the point that it crashed and erased my game, :|  but then I realized that I was playing an old beta and that there are newer, stabler versions out there.  So, I went to the main Chaosforge site and downloaded the latest version and followed the instructions on the site to import the music and sound from the original Diablo.  (I had to do some digging to find my old Diablo CD, but I wanted to test this properly)  :)

Holy crap!  :o  What a difference having the music and sound makes!  O_o  It's way more immersive and interesting than the old beta I had been playing and brought back all kinds of nostalgia for the original Diablo.  :)  And I can see that a lot of work went into DiabloRL making everything look and sound and feel like the original and in some ways improving on it!  (Like the ability to use the look command to look over the whole map, and the simplification of the inventory system, and the Fast Travel system is so helpful, I found myself wishing it was in DRL too...  and maybe in every game ever, now that I think about it)  :P  I can see that a lot of work has gone into making a very polished product and I admit that I was kind of disappointed that the game just ended when I got to Hell.  :(  I'm thinking of playing another game and making a recording of it to help generate more interest in this; maybe we can see the game get finished!  :)

Anyway, I played as a warrior, intending to play to his strengths by building up my strength trait and getting strong weapons and armour, though I still found myself picking up some magic skills along the way too.  I spent most of the game with a "sword of the bear," thinking that the knockback would be good for dealing with mobs of enemies and help keep me fighting one at a time and it was mostly good for small groups, but the biggest struggles came at the beginnings of levels where I frequently found myself surrounded by 10 or 15 enemies (or more?) and the knockback actually made it harder, because any time I knocked someone back, one of his buddies took his place and so I was constantly facing the ones with full hitpoints because all the injured ones were getting knocked away, and that gave them time to heal before facing me again and it was taking a lot longer than it should have to defeat them, so when I switched to a weapon without knockback, it was a big help.  :)

The toughest battle in the game was facing Leoric, the Skeleton King; he would hang back and let his minions fight me and I couldn't even get to him to do any damage because any time I killed one, he would raise it again.  The turning point came when I used a scroll of Stone Curse on him to stop him from raising the dead and I was able to thin out their numbers enough to get up to him, but my sword wasn't strong enough to do much to him, (and it kept knocking him away, since I was still foolishly using that sword of the bear at the time)  :P  so I ended up pounding on him with Holy Bolts and those seemed to work.  :)  Once I got his crown, and the life stealing effects thereof, the game kind of turned into a Vampyre build like that of DRL and I hardly had to use any more healing potions for the rest of the game after that!  :D

All that being said, as much as I enjoyed playing this, I did notice a number of bugs in it so I took notes as I was playing and I was wondering if it's worth reporting them here.  Is anyone doing any work on this game lately?

Forum / Hyperlink in sig?

Ever since I started video-recording my DRL games, I've had a link to my Youtube channel included in my sig like this:  Check out my Youtube channel for videos of me playing DRL!  :)  Today, when I went to update my sig to include my new badges, it wouldn't let me hyperlink the text; I got an error message that said:

Did we make some changes to the forum recently or something?  It wouldn't even let me save my sig as it already was!  :o  I was able to work around it by taking out the hyperlink, but it would be nice to be able to put the "URL" line back in there to make it look less cluttered.

That's right, I conquered the challenge that even 2Dev called hard!  :D  :D  :D

It feels like I've been trying to do this forever!  :o  173 recorded attempts, and that's just the ones that had videos; there were probably dozens of unrecorded attempts before that.  Most of those videos are collecting dust on my hard drive, but you can see some of my previous attempts at this badge here, here, here, here, and here.  My strategy has remained pretty consistent throughout, but this was the first time I truly pulled it off!  :)

It's mostly a stairdive, taking advantage of the Scout's stair sense, with occasional deviations for valuable equipment and some tricky decisions based around gauging which enemies were necessary to kill and which ones I could just run past and/or avoid.  The lucky find of a Combat Shotgun in a vault early on was a big help and the invulnerability/berserk combo going up against the Cyberdemon was a huge help!  :)  There were still some close calls here and there, but I was careful to not accidentally invoke the name of the RNG and He continued to favour me.  ;)

I was growing increasingly excited about possible victory the further I got into hell, especially when I arrived at Dis berserk, looking forward to taking down the Mastermind with my Piercing Chainsaw, but then...  disaster!  My berserk ran out!  O_o  I briefly sank into despair, but I knew I didn't want to give up after coming this far, so what followed was 25 minutes of excruciatingly tense corner-shooting with my shotgun, knowing that at any time, it could possibly only take one barrage from the Mastermind to kill me.  Her AI makes her somewhat unpredictable, but I've observed, in the past, that she tends to avoid positions where you can cornershoot her.  Like, if she gets hit when she can't see you, she'll move to try to come at you from another direction, so that meant that any time I hit her, I would be forced to retreat, and come at her from another direction.  There was a prolonged cat-and-mouse game, where I got her down to "lightly wounded" like this, but she managed to get a couple of barrages off at me, which I barely survived and made things all the tenser.  :|

And then, the turning point in the battle came when I realized I could use the geography to my advantage; specifically, the pillars in the middle top and bottom are one square from the edge of the map, so I figured that if I could maneuver her into that gap, I could pound on her repeatedly without her being able to evade or return fire.  It was tricky getting her into position and I still took another barrage on the way, but in the end, it worked out spectacularly well!  It was still very, very tense, but I kept it up, one shell after another until I eventually managed to bring her down.  (I considered delivering the coup de grace with my Rocket Launcher, but I didn't want to risk blowing up my cover and ruining the game)  :)
