Ooh!  Very close to Pacifist Gold, too!  And yes, Marine seems to be the class of choice for Angel of Pacifism.  :)

I can definitely speak highly of the benefit of getting out there.  For me, it was bike-riding in a nearby park that I found very relaxing and took the edge off the depression, though, as you say, it doesn't remove it completely.

And yes, spending time with other people is a big help too.  (And I too favour meeting people in real life rather than chatting online)  For me, the big problem in the past year was that my relationship troubles, work troubles, and friend troubles hit me all at the same time.  If it had been just one of them or even two of them, then I would at least have had the third thing to distract me from my problems.  As it was, I was spending a lot of time sitting at home with nothing to distract me from how miserable I was...  (except DoomRL, of course)  ;)

Don't forget that while your brain is working, you have all the resources to make yourself happy...

While that may be technically true, that attitude can frequently fuel depression.

I read a good book on the subject of depression recently that says that often, people's attempts to reason themselves out of it makes it worse.  That sentiment of "I can be happy if I want to" leads to thoughts of, "then why am I not happy?  I should be happy!  What's wrong with me?"  This leads into a downward spiral that makes you feel worse and worse the more you dwell on what you're feeling.  The unfortunate truth is that emotions are frequently unreasonable and irrational and you can't reason your way out of them.

I think it's best to find something to distract you from what you're feeling.  Feeling sad sometimes is normal.  You just have to find something else to think about so you don't make it worse.

YASD stands for "Yet Another Sudden Death" or "Yet Another Stupid Death."  YAVP stands for "Yet Another Victory Post."

There's also YAAM, which stands for "Yet Another Ass-kicking Marine" (If you get 100% kills) and YAFW, which stands for "Yet Another Full Win."  (If you get the bonus ending for DoomRL)

I also invented another one, YAAAM, which I use when I get 99% kills.  The extra A stands for "Almost."  :P  (So far, it hasn't caught on, but I kind of like it)  :)

EDIT:  Argh!  Ninja'd!  I really need to type faster!  :P

Meh, I've kind of been having a bad year...  :|

I've been struggling to find employment, finally fell back on a job at Wal-Mart, and now, they're cutting back my hours, when I was barely getting enough as it is.

A relationship that I was really hopeful about crashed and burned and now it seems like we can't even be friends and I'm seriously considering telling her we have to break off contact permanently.  (We've been in contact 8 years)

Most of my friends that I previously relied on stopped returning my calls and became distant for mysterious reasons.

I decided to go back to college and didn't get my first choice of program I wanted to enter.

I've been struggling with depression and anxiety and generally feeling burned out.

So, all in all, I've been having a pretty shitty time for a while.  I'm still hopeful that it can get better, though.  :)

0.9.9.6 / Re: [U|95%|5|YASD] More failure

Yeah, Malicious Blades is pretty powerful once you get it; the problem is the work you need to do to get it.  :)

Effective use of Dodgemaster can be a big help.  For example, in that situation you found yourself in at the end, you could have zig-zagged up to the imp to shotgun him at point-blank range for a better chance to insta-kill him.  (I suggest getting used to walking around in a zig-zag pattern anyway, actually)  Alternatively, you could have backed away from him to shoot him from outside his visual range so he doesn't get a shot back.  (Two levels of HR means you'll always be able to outrun him)

I doubt he did, why would you do need to clear it without taking damage? You can get some damage there and still get Berserker Armor.

The "Angelic Badge" is the award for clearing the Mortuary without taking damage.

EDIT:  (Argh!  Ninja'd!)  :P

If it makes you feel any better, I failed in all my attempts to get Untouchable Cross in AoMC, so it makes your run look pretty darn good to me!  :)

24.46 kills per minute, or 2.45 seconds per kill.
Untouchable cross.
On Nightmare!
While doing everything past Unholy Cathedral with only melee.

And you can do this regularly.

BRB, abandoning self-esteem.

And all in less than an hour...

visiting all generated levels...

with 95% kills...

Wha...?

This does not compute...

Modding / Re: Modding Tutorial (WIP)
« on: April 08, 2012, 14:25 »
Thanks, Game Hunter!  :)

I re-downloaded them and gave Hell's Arena a whirl and it worked fine up until the end where it failed to display the mortem and gave this message:  (After winning all three rounds at ITYTD)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The irc channel would be a great place to get answers to modding questions.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have to go to a family Easter dinner now and I'm already late, but I'll probably drop by IRC another time.

Modding / Re: Modding Tutorial (WIP)
« on: April 08, 2012, 02:33 »
Hi, I've been looking over the modding tutorials because I'm thinking of doing some modding.  I'm still very much a newbie at it, but I have a bit of experience in programming from a high school course I took years ago, so I think, with some practice, I could create some interesting designs.  :)

These tutorials have been helpful in getting me started, but I think, right now, I would get a lot of benefit from taking an existing Doom level and just playing around with it to figure out how to do stuff and also figure out what I *can* do.  I tried downloading the Hell's Arena and Infinite Arena maps cited in the tutorial, but both of them crash when I tried running them.  :(  I suspect it has to do with the fact that I'm running them in version 0.9.9.6 and they're designed for 0.9.9.4, because when I copied them over to that version, they worked fine.  So, now, I'm wondering how much of these tutorials I can trust to be up to date.  I know that at least *some* of it works, because when I copy/pasted the design for the basic map, it worked fine for 0.9.9.6.

So, I guess my question is what's the next step for me in learning how to make mods for 0.9.9.6?

...Not sure about malicious blades, but with Vampyre the pain elementals become health dispensors (you may end up healthy but naked though) and blademaster allows you to kill any and all adjacent lost souls in the blink of an eye.

The new AI makes City of Skulls a lot tougher for Vampyre or Malicious Blades builds than it used to be.  You have to be *very* careful that the Lost Souls don't overwhelm you.  Blademaster makes that level a cakewalk, though.

(no way am I taking on the Arena Master with my bare hands - yet),

I don't know if you're aware of this, so I'll just point out...  Unlike the original Doom, in which Berserk packs only boost your fists' damage, in DoomRL, Berserk packs boost the damage of *all* melee weapons.  This makes the Chainsaw very powerful and can make short work of the Arena Master.

...Maybe I have to go with Zecks and give the Halls a try, but I have the feeling I'm going come out looking like a Swiss cheese - if I come out at all..

The Sergeants will definitely fill you with holes, but three Supercharges help take the edge off that.  :)  Anyway, you don't have to kill all of the Sergeants;  just enough to get through the doors and then you can wait and let the lava overtake them.  You still get the experience for them even if they die by lava.

Incidentally, it's too bad you didn't reach MMB by the time you reached Cybie; the fire and melee resistances turn him into a pussycat.  If you had visited a couple of optional levels like Chained Court and Halls of Carnage, I think you would have made short work of him.

1317
Where the hell do these resistances come from? I've seen these in mortems before, and they seem rediculously high.Does running around naked with only a chainsaw confer special bonuses I've missed?

The next time you pick up a berserk pack, look at your resistances.  It gives you a 60% boost to everything.

1318
^ I'll have to try that.

As for Uniques, they are *mostly* indestructible.  Dropping them in lava won't destroy them.  Neither will nuking them, blowing up a barrel near them, or firing a rocket at them.  But you *can* destroy unique armour by gibbing a Former who is wearing it.  So, you still have to be careful about blowing up barrels if there are Formers are around.

0.9.9.6 / Re: [M|AoMr|89%|YASD] I don't even..

Those former humans would've made a nice target; one shot when you're almost out and then you insta-reload, ready to take on the next big enemy.

Taking on the Mortuary is pretty ballsy for a Marksman build, but it looks like you had a good chance here!  The AFJ is helpful for corpse removal so there are fewer enemies for the Archies to raise, but you have to really watch your ammo; you were dangerously low there!  Farming some Former Humans or Former Captains here would probably have been a good idea too.

But anyway, yeah...  looks like a rather disappointing finish to a very promising run.  :|

Funny thing - I killed cacodemon after dying. And even managed to dualreload! That's a real ninja..

LOL!  :D  That's a bug in the message display, but it sure is a funny image!  :)

Also notice that there is "The missile hits the arachnotron" message, which means no, at least one shot missed for sure.

Aha!  But that shot did hit!  It just didn't hit me!  :D

(Okay, fine, point taken; it still didn't save me from being killed instantly before I got a move)  :)
