Title: Savecumming? (I promise I have an excuse)
Post by: Cheesybox on December 06, 2012, 05:53
Wasn't sure if it was still possible and if so, how does one do it? I've got a game on a marathon challenge that is pretty easy mode at this point, but I want to have this saved so when I need to let off steam I can just run around with my P3S1T1 plasma gun and lava armor and dakka dakka all the things.
Thanks in advance

yes, interesting. Make a save for Ao100 on lvl 20-25 with good equipment and just repeat it time to time for relaxing, right?

As far as I try to use save scumming, I find that we need backup not only "save" but "player.wad" and "score.wad" too. And restore all 3 files or we _can_ have some strange problems on next run.

Well I thought after I posted I'm just gonna copy/paste the whole folder (its actually the 9.9.7 beta I'm playing right now so I don't know if it's different). Level 70 right now and was getting super paranoid that my power supply would die or something haha.
I didn't see anything about a NDA for the beta, but just in case there is I'll just say its not Ao100, its a lot more than that ;)

I think it best to stay away from save scumming. It's a slippery slope.

Uhh "I dont want to die from boredom" is the worst excuse for savescumming. The whole point is that its a brutal mental ordeal. Just do multiple sessions. You'll hone your "kill things without doing something stupid" abilities, which will pay off when you're trying other challenges later.

If you want to completely scum all of your data for everything, all three of those are necessary: if you just want to restore that one spot from that one game, you only need to copy the "save" file. Assuming you never actually complete that run, it won't affect the data WADs, which are only modified when it comes time to print the mortem (i.e., on death or victory).

Just note that savescumming into other versions isn't guaranteed to work (in case you still want it when there's a new release).

While savescumming is only allowed during alpha / betatesting in my eyes - I can understand the need for bloody rampage.
Still, there are easier difficulties in DoomRL - and thats what they are for :) .

Meh, there's not enough demons on the easier difficulties.

If you want an easy "blow through without a second's thought" game, it shouldn't be hard to create like, a 300-floor episode where you start with an infinite-ammo insta-killing gun and can't die. No scumming required!

There was a guide here, with step by step instructions. But it's christmas, so now there's not. Life's like that sometimes, even at christmas.
