0.9.9.5 / [M|AoOC|76%|YAVP] First try ever of AoOC ended well...
« on: January 28, 2012, 14:42 »
Yeah, as the title says I decided to randomly give Angel of Over-Confidence a go, and happened to have it go very well, coming across a handful of modpacks and an early duelist armor to give myself some decent protection, and then coming across the Jackhammer at the very start of 6 and just destroying with it. Even better - Invulnerability globe on the floor before the Mastermind meant I was victorious on my first ever attempt at the challenge.

Decided it would be best to go a defensive trait set up and it didn't disappoint either - dodgemaster ASAP was golden at the start of the challenge, when combined with the knockback of the assault shotgun you're given basically means the only enemies who can really threaten you are archviles and mancubi, or revenants if you're caught in splashable range. Everything else simply served to get me going ASAP and allowed me to survive. I did happen to get a large amount of health pickups in the levels though (medpacks, 3 supercharges or so) so I dunno if it would go this well if I tried it again.

Regardless, extremely happy with it! I'm really feeling I should move beyond HNTR now, as I'm finding that serious attempts at victory (as in, not attempting a very difficult challenge for the first time) tend to result in victories 50% of the time now.

I might give this a go. Not like I need supporter status, but I've been playing a lot of this since I picked it back up again and I could probably write something to help fill out the wiki, although my skill level may not be super high (although a lot of that can be attributed to the fact that I love to play recklessly :P). I'll see what I can do.

Discussion / Re: Quick questions thread!
« on: January 22, 2012, 02:36 »
Two things:

1) So I died to JC on an AoMr run. But I still got a standard victory - I thought if you failed there you didn't get any victory. Am I just remembering this wrong?
2) How would you go about beating him on AoMr? I mean, I guess part of the problem was my weaponry - my damage at the end was a mere (2d4+5)x2 after perks. If I had actually found one of the rare weapon packs or rare pistols would I have been fine? I did manage to make it there just on speedloaders. Was kinda funny - had finesse 2, reloader 1, intuition 2, Soab 2, SoG 3, Dualgunner 1 - never did invest in Eagle Eye. But I was firing at a speed of 0.27s and reloading at 0.36 or something, so it was funny. Actually nuked the SM without the lava element - lucked out on invul globe after the lava pits proved to be a no go.

I'm almost positive you can use the nuclear plasma rifle as a nuke in AoB, since it's not the alt-fire but the alt-reload that turns it into a nuke.

Gah, maybe that's why it didn't work then. Oops. Not like it mattered here, but good to know in the future.

0.9.9.5 / [M|AoB|86%|YAFW] First AoB Win Ever
« on: January 21, 2012, 18:13 »
Well, I was typing a bunch of stuff up and then lost it all because I accidentally, stupidly navigated to another webpage! Gaaaaahhh.
Anyways, first AoB win ever, among other firsts. Hadn't played the game since 0.9.8.10, having won once on AoMr then and once plain on Easy. Always had hated doing AoB though, as my runs never got off the ground, usually getting slaughtered slowly but surely by the former sergeants early on. But this run, after the grinder that was the arena, started going very well. Especially once I did the Chained Court and got the chainsaw.

Did a lot of things for the first time - UC (easiest special level ever in AoB, only lost 20% of 200% if that), The Mortuary (ran away though, was too many enemies for me to handle ultimately), Dis (nuke+invinc), and fought JC. That battle was also hilariously easy - as I approached, he summoned a few lost souls that I almost immediately berserked cutting through on my way to him, and then slaughtered him in 8 turns of melee, taking almost no damage whatsoever. Really pathetic actually. Probably be harder for other characters though.

Didn't end up doing 100% as I originally wanted, after realizing I missed mobs in Halls of Carnage. Part of the reason I had so many medpacks left at the end. Also, had so many lava infested levels in the last few stages. It was starting to get silly, so I just sort of didn't bother trying to kill too many of the enemies then.

Saw a lot of nice items I sadly couldn't use though - Firestorm weapon pack (first time drop T.T), Missile Launcher (random spawn, skipped the wall), tons of mods I couldn't really utilize properly so I stopped picking most up, Cybernetic Armor (could've used, but didn't want to risk being stuck with something useless - ended up getting lots of red after a dearth of armor in general so I ended up being ok). Phaseshift boots were nice, though they spawned super late (Lava Pits). Acid-Proof boots were an early drop though, and made some acid river levels much easier.

Also, thought I could maybe use the Nuclear Rifle as a nuke also. Apparently can't on AoB, didn't know how the Alt-Fire would interact with the restriction.

ANYWAYS! It was an amazing run, the first AoB run I've ever done that's made it even a third of the way through the game, much less all the way. And I doubled my bronze medal count and got my first gold medal, along with I think my 2nd & 3rd silver medal. I no longer have a dislike for AoB anymore (I had originally just done this run to rank up! Oh the irony...)

Remember the homing phase devices. They *will* save your life.

Haha yeah. I'd like to attempt a YAAM, but if I think things are going south I'll be ready to use those and just book it.

UPDATE:
Of course, I think I didn't fully clear the Halls of Carnage when I did it... completely forgot about that level lol. ANYWAYS! Just beat the UC for the first time ever (hell, the first time I've ever attempted that level since I've never been that far in before with a melee character). Haven't tested out the spear yet, but the damage looks like it's going to be so much fun. Armor's not looking so well though unfortunately - just haven't been getting it to drop. Hopefully I start getting some better item drops, although i still have a couple of large medpacks and skulls for emergencies, along with a couple of each phase device. I should definitely attempt the Mortuary btw right? Since I hear there's a set bonus for using the AA with the LS? Also, went ahead and picked up a level of Finesse, going to grab a second at 10 and then attempt to finish out Tough as Nails by 12.

UPDATE 2:
I won! Took me a dozen plays, most of which were characters that died before they got off the ground. Mortem to be posted shortly.

Discussion / Need AoB Advice
« on: January 21, 2012, 01:28 »
Just passed the City of Skulls on this HNTR AoB run (saw my first Firestorm pack ever too...) and had a few questions, since I've never been NEARLY this far on AoB:

1) How do you do handle the really strong late-game enemies in a melee build? Specifically, I'm thinking of guys like the archviles and mancubi.
2) What should I used my mods on? So far, I've gotten a lot of agility that I've thrown onto armor when I could (the better to reach people to chainsaw them!). Will I be able to turn the cybernetic armor I just got into nanofiber cybernetic armor with another P, and is it worth doing, or is the speed loss too much? Also, since I can't check without starting my game up from save, can i throw a second bulk mod on my chainsaw without whizkid?
3) Just any other quick tips? Which levels should I avoid like the plague?

Don't worry about spoilers.
Thanks!

I just want to note that this is a really bad interpretation of the accuracy system. You're better off reading this Wiki page in order to understand it. Arachnotrons have +3 accuracy, which translates to a 74% chance to hit per shot. At peak vision it's 50% instead.

Some things that could have helped you out:
  • Equipping better armor. Even though it's plasma damage, Arachnotrons deal very little damage per shot (1d5), so red armor would have caused you to take less damage.
  • Using missile launcher or BFG. Even if they're not necessarily one-hit kills, they deal pretty good knockback, giving you time to run or make the most of your inventory.
Since Ammochain lacks accuracy, it's hard to bet on hitting enemies ASAP in a swarm situation such as this. Depending on where you started, finding a crevice where they will likely follow you into melee range would give you a major advantage (since they have pitiful melee damage when compared to the plasma volley). On HNTR it's typical to expect 4-5 Arachnotrons in a cave level, so don't think running into a new area will make much of a difference.

Still, for the amount of experience you had, this seems like it was a really nice run. So congrats to that.

Thanks. Yeah, there's just a lot of information and such that I haven't picked up as of yet for DoomRL. I'm actually pretty good at the roguelikes I've played before, like ADOM (I've won with monk, beastfighter, ranger, and wizard and ascended a wizard, although I'll never repeat that because ascensions are such a drag), so the general skillset is there (patience, decision making, patience, and did I mention patience? xD ). There's just lots of things I've yet to pick up to work on the "decision-making" process, such as my lack of understanding of certain enemies. That'll just come with time though, as while I like using the wiki to find assemblies and plan out builds and such nothing beats practical experience in learning the enemies.

The best thing would have been to carry more med-packs in the first place. Why were you carrying so much plasma if you had ammochain? I try to carry four large med-packs at all times. The amount spare armor was right, though.

I'd been saving up plasma for a while, and yeah it was a lot, but I didn't really have anything else to use space on - I'd had 2-3 medpacks in the cybie fight but he got me from offscreen several times (the only time I'd fought him previously was several versions before, where I don't recall him being able to shoot from out of your vision range, but oh well).

Quote
However, as I've said previously, large med-packs are really just second chances for when you screw up, anyway. Arachs don't have the best accuracy...they lose 4% hitrate per distance square. So they start off with a 24% chance of missing, which increases to 40% at a range of 5 squares. Not bad. If you're running, that goes up to 60%. Add in your tac armor set and you should have been able to make it to cover, no problem.

Of course, there was always the possibility of running into other spiders. The only guarantee would have been to have at least two large med-packs. The other thing about Arachs is that they deal plasma damage, which halves your armor protection. So red armor only saves 2 points per hit. Tac/green armor, for all I know, may save 0 points.

So in other words, if you had turned on running and swapped to red armor, you would have lowered their accuracy to 40% on average and saved up to 10 health points, or 20%, per plasma volley. So that would have made quite a difference. I hear you on the graphical beta though. It's MUCH harder to judge distance (but only b/c we're used to ASCII I guess.)

Yeah, graphical beta is great but the lack of knowing my relative position on the map can make judgement calls much harder. And I didn't know arachnotrons missed so much - I'd always assumed that if they unloaded they just pretty much hit (I really haven't had THAT much experience with them) because they were hitscan in Doom iirc. I'm just not very familiar with the mechanics behind a lot of the enemies behaviors.

Quote
Feel free to check the inventory guide in my signature for more tips...
Sounds good, ill give it a look.

I was a few spaces southwest of the medpack on the map when I spawned, with one north and one east of me. I may very well have been able to escape going west with run, but ofc I was afraid I'd bumble into yet another spider. And yeah, missile launcher was for pounding on cybie, or at least part of the battle I was using it. The biggest reason i probably survived the two, albeit barely, is i only took one volley from the both of them (shot one twice, then they responded, then finished the one).

You're right about the homing phase though - if I had recognized what the situation would do to me from the start I likely could have simply phased and then gone down stairs before they woke up.

0.9.9.5 / [M|98%|YASD] I don't know how I could've avoid this...
« on: January 17, 2012, 16:43 »
Heya, just recently came back to this after a long absence after noticing the graphical beta was up, and decided to start playing it again. Imagine my surprise at how much had changed (thought I'd won when I beat the cyberdemon). Anyways, it was a fun run, and only my second time ever beating him (did two or three dozen runs prior to now, and this was my 5th run since starting it up again) and then I got thrown into a situation I don't know if I could've handle better, so I thought I'd see if anyone had any words of wisdom for me. I was spawned with two arachnotrons within view of me, so I immediately unloaded with my plasma rifle (nuclear plasma rifle + ammochain is hilariously fun, although I didn't get to enjoy it for long), after taking down both of them I was almost dead, and having used up my healing when I got shot from off screen by cybie I moved onwards, only to run into a third arachnotron before I could reach either the medpack or berserk pack in view. Considering I was almost dead, and not thinking I'd have time to run and escape, I used my homing phase device only to find that the stairs were still in his view range and he killed me.

The only thing I could think of would've been to possibly move away from the center of the lvl and try to get congregation to occur (but it's incredibly difficult for me to discern where I am relative to the lvl in the graphics beta, as I can't view the whole map) or to move left instead of right (I guess there were two health globes over there) but I'm wondering if there would've been a better response to the initial situation that wouldn't have whittled down my remaining 50-60% hp to 7% before I ran into the third arachnotron. Maybe switching armor at the start, but I'm not very aware of the time value for that and didn't want to get pummeled while I was changing. Any opinions? Bad luck or easily survivable?

Discussion / Re: Minigun - Useful w/Master Trait?

I didn't even think to use the rocket launcher, as I still had one >.>
Also, I actually did manage to kill him recently with pistols. My first ever win on AoMr (I need to post that...) where I only had a single unique during the entire game (which was destroyed offscreen, an arena level) and was forced to use the same pistols that I'd been using since lv1. Never found another advanced pistol either. Was fun, max SoG, max Int (at 2), EE2 and completely own.

Yep. Made my plasma rifle very deadly (especially with A2 to make up for no eagle eye). Sadly though, I died to the cyberdemon. CL10, couldn't damage him fast enough, despite entering with a nigh full baron armor and almost 200% health. BFG just wasn't cutting it for me, and I got him to severely wounded with it before I was down to 39 cells (1 short, lol). Gunning him down with the plasma rifle fell short as he killed me while he was at Mortally Wounded. T.T So close to winning on Angel of Impatience too (first try even!)

Discussion / Minigun - Useful w/Master Trait?
« on: September 01, 2009, 16:19 »
Just thought I'd pose this question, as hearsay has told me that it is a very inaccurate weapon. I'm currently running an Angel of Impatience, and just finished Phobos Base lv9 where I found the minigun. Since I'll also have whizkid, I guess the question is if it would be more valuable to mod a chaingun (hopefully advanced) with agility and damage mods than to use the minigun? Is the minigun better than the chaingun in the meantime, what with only a single agility mod on the chaingun? (A1, that's the accuracy one in the beta, right?)

Any opinions on this?

EDIT: Note that I will NOT have Eagle Eye, because of the aforementioned master trait.
EDIT 2: Make that an A2 chaingun :D
