Yeah, I try not to go through the wiki to find out about stuff I haven't encountered, but once I accidently assembly an elephant gun, I go straight there to find out what's so great about it.

Well, I have no idea how it works, since I didn't want to even look at it (I just know that some assembly combination would get stuck in my memory), but if you removed all the assembly data and let me fill in the ones I know, would that work, or would it result in just an empty spreadsheet?

Discussion / ASCII graphics for Doom

So... has anybody done that yet? Replace Doom's graphics, so that instead of zombiemen there are lowercase h's, weapons are brackets and the doomguy's face is now just "@"? Hell, you could even remake some of the special levels from DoomRL..!

Because if nobody did that before...

Download and installation:

Attached is the DoomRL.wad file with all the graphics and a .bat file which will allow you to run it, as long as you have ZDoom inside the Doom directory. It should work fine, but it's my first time doing something like this, so anything can go wrong.
I've tried to run it on vanilla Doom, but that just throws an error message. I can probably fix it, but it would be a major pain in the ass and as long as ZDoom works, it shouldn't be needed.

I've replaced all relevant textures and sprites present in Ultimate Doom, I think. It works just fine with Doom 2, but a lot of stuff is missing there.

Would it be possible to remove spoilers from it, so I could use it with just the assemblies I've already found?

I decided to find all of them the hard way (Hell's armory, there's no way I'll guess all of them by myself)

I thought there were large heath packs and berserk packs, where the former heals and later zerks, and both are still present in .995. You can/could get berserk from healing?

This was a close call - I'm playing Angel of Red Alert. I was all the way to the right and most of the top of the map was unexplored, when I was notified that I have 60 seconds to live... and no stairs in sight. I ran back through the unexplored rooms, had to blast the last imp that stood in my way, and then I found the stairs, with EXACTLY one second to spare. Phew! If I reloaded that shotgun on reflex, I would not make it.

BTW, earlier today something like this happened to be in Hell's armory, except that there I ended on the tile next to the stairs and blew up. It seems like I have the tendency to turn back at the last possible moment.

The only thing that allowed me to beat it is the plasma shield. I belive if you haven't a plasma damage protection i'ts better niking the level.

If you can close up on him, his melee attacks are quite weak, and since he doesn't get knockbacked, you can unload your double shotgun as much as you like. He's dead pretty soon.

I was playing HntR Angel of Shotgunnery, nuked Mastermind with overloaded nuclear BFG and proceeded to attack JC with my elephant gun. Just as he died, this happened. I can't recall anything out of ordinary (except the fact that I now routinely reach JC, gotta start with HMP soon =)


Edit: Damn, it seems the save file didn't get uploaded corrcetly and is gone for good - I played it again and got my ass handed to me by a morally wounded JC.

This time around, however, JC started spawning tougher enemies, in the first attempt he only ever spawned lost souls (which explains why I managed to take him down), so maybe that's related to the crash. In the first game he spawned lost souls 6+ times, while now he pretty soon switched them for cacodemons, knights, barons and then revenants.

I got a full win on AoPc now. Too bad I just missed the Compet-n platinum cross.
BTW, that perhaps lead to another bug - despite showing as a full win on the player statistics page, in high score it's listed as "Death by sacrifice", despite me surviving both nuclear explosions.
