Nightmare! / [N!|97%|YAFW] Promotion!
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:58 »
The noteworthiness of this run was mostly personal; it earned my 7th Diamond badge and thus promotion to Marshall!  That'd been a goal of mine for a while, so I was rather excited to finally achieve it.

I was so stinking close to a 100% Nightmare! run until approximately level 4 of Hell.  Frankly I'm not sure when I screwed it up; I noticed the problem in Limbo when I checked my kill count to see if I'd gotten them all.  I assume that some corpses resurrected on an earlier level right before I descended the stairs.  I was trying to be careful but I probably mistook a "real" corpse for a vile corpse.  There were a lot of those on level 4 :)

Speaking of Limbo, it was the most challenging level by far due to ammo shortages.  I cleared the left side pretty quickly but then starting running out of ammo.  As I pushed right I was almost completely unarmed - I was forced to isolate some Nightmare Arachnotrons and farm them for power cells.  Definitely would have preferred regular Arachnotrons, but no appropriate corpses were available - whoopsie, killed them too quickly!  After 10 farming cycles I felt confident enough to finish clearing the right side of the level.

It turned out to be a good thing than I missed 100% earlier in Hell.  I was going for a full win, and if had stayed committed to 100% then I would have had no choice but to attempt the Lava Pits.  I had found zero environment suits the entire game.  I had similarly poor luck with mod packs; after investing in Whizkid I was afforded few opportunities to make use of it.

I had good luck with level spawns, though.  That's usually the way my Nightmare! runs end... spawn on a level and immediately curse, "Oh crap I'm dead."

Discussion / Re: Rebalancing barrels?
« on: February 17, 2014, 06:42 »
Choosing to walk near a barrel is always a calculated risk.  You [almost] always have the option to blow the barrel from a distance.  There may be guaranteed negative consequences (destroying cover, valuable items, or forcing yourself to walk over lava later), but those consequences must be weighed against the worst case scenario of the barrel exploding in your face.

There are items to mitigate the risks: phase devices, fire-resistant armor, rocket launchers for creating your own secondary routes.  Games with procedurally generated levels often rely on preparation and creativity by the player to balance the randomized "unfairness."  It still ends up being unfair sometimes... fortunately these games have lots of replay value :)

I can remember being killed from 100% a couple of times by barrels.  I don't think it's happened while I was wearing good armor, though - not without help from nearby enemies.

General Discussion / Re: Design Rant : Inventory

Here's a biggie -- I think about removing items on floor altogether. Items can be found on (highlighted) corpses, lockers, boxes, etc. Dropped items get destroyed. This would prevent doing tedious stash micromanagement, and increase the pace of the game. Also, it'd work well with the boxes idea -- players wont be tempted to do tedious backtracking to get ammo they left behind and couldn't pick up. This is probably the most controversial decision, but it would (IMHO) benefit the game much.

1) In general I don't like the feel of destroy-on-drop; it feels a little too contrived.  I don't find the stash management to be all that tedious personally.
2) I don't think this mechanic would alleviate backtracking much anyway, as players will still backtrack to get at the corpses, lockers, boxes, etc...
3) OTOH, perhaps you could include a scavenger-type enemy or mechanic that eats/destroys items on the floor when the player isn't around?  Your stuff wouldn't get eaten 100% of the time but it would always be at risk.

Discussion / Re: Nightmare Anomaly
« on: November 11, 2013, 09:02 »
I've passed it a few times on N! but am by no means an expert.  Here's my 2 cents:

Your build looks slow for N!.  No finesse, no hellrunner, and it looks like you're not playing a Scout (technician I presume?).  Running is not an option for you, and you fire slowly enough that enemies will get frequent double moves.

There are basically two ways to fight these guys. You'll want to use a chokepoint for either method, so immediately rocket jump to your left or your right.  After that you need either shotguns or Berserker+Chainsaw.  I find shotguns work better than rapid-fire weapons in this case because the enemies clump up.  As they get clogged in the chokepoint they also take friendly fire from cacodemons.

A shell box is very helpful to keep your shotguns running at a good pace.  Also, remember that bulk mod packs can significantly reduce reload time for shotguns, double shotguns, and rocket launchers.

The Compet-n Platinum Badge has been eluding me forever!  I much prefer a slower, deliberate pace.  I've come close before, though, which both drove me nuts but also convinced me that I had a good shot of eventually making it.  My previous best time for a standard game was 10:02; the game must have been literally mocking me at that point, and it's a wonder I didn't need to buy a new keyboard after that :)

But here it is, and with more than 2 minutes to spare!  Also, my hands hurt.

The toughest part (other than making really stupid mistakes and double-tapping keys) is making snap decisions regarding what's absolutely necessary for your survival vs. what you ought to just run straight past.  In the end I decided that there's not much that's necessary :)

Post Mortem / Re: [UV|100%|YAFW] MSc sux fix pls

I've had some good luck with it in the Angel of 100 challenge where you have more chances to find uniques.  Being able to stack MSc with Int2 is also very, very nice.  But yes, the RNG can indeed make it worthless for you.

Discussion / [0.9.9.3] Enjoying
« on: May 13, 2011, 10:10 »
Just wanted to say that I'm loving the new version.  Congratulations on an excellent update!  So far I like every change that I've noticed, and that's a rare treat.  I especially like the MAc change - requiring Reloader make more sense, and going for Ammochain is no longer a no-brainer.  In fact, I just got my Elite Platinum and decided to forgo Ammochain in favor of a Juggler/Whizkid/Berzerker combo.  I can still see myself taking Ammochain occasionally, though, especially for Ao100.

Discussion / Re: Ah, I remember why I don't like AoB...
« on: April 07, 2011, 17:02 »

And what do I do in situations like these?

In that screenshot you're as good as dead.  There are a couple faint glimmers of hope, though:

1) There are two fuel barrels in the far southeast room that could be pushed into the room directly to your east side.  If positioned against the wall properly and then detonated by throwing your combat knife, these barrels might kill enough enemies to give you a fighting chance.  This is not a good chance for survival, but it's better than trying to run 10 tiles to the stairs with two former sergeants gunning for you.

2) With a little more health you could try gift-dropping your green armor 1 tile to the northwest - but you're almost guaranteed to take some damage, so it probably wouldn't work in this case.

AoB is definitely not a "fair" challenge; there are frequent no-win scenarios, especially prior to The Chained Court.  On harder difficulty levels it can be a major challenge just to survive past level 2.  You need some good luck to make it to The Chained Court on Ultra-Violence or Nightmare.  Or at least you need the absence of bad luck.

Once you've got your chainsaw and the Berserker trait then your survivability rate goes up a bit.

Before him 159 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 141 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 3 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 13 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
9 killed the bastard and survived.
3 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The entire purpose of this run was to get the Gatekeeper Diamond badge.  I was half tempted to just suicide after I'd achieved the objective, but I guess you can't have too many Cyberdemon heads mounted on the wall.

Of all the Diamond badges this is the only one that I feel is consistently achievable, at least for me.  No powerups or extreme luck are required, just gotta be careful and take the right traits.

... but HOLY COW was the RNG ever trying to kill me!  I got *six* stinking Arachnotron caves.  If this hadn't been an AoMC run then I probably would have died; being able to consistently one-shot Arachnotrons is one of the benefits of that challenge mode.

An early minigun was a nice find, but wasn't really necessary since I had gobs of power cells from Arachnotron caves.  Got the Firestorm pack from the armory - really wished I had an extra bulk mod to slap on my plasma rifle, 'cuz running out of ammo after just 5 shots sucks!

If you're wondering why I kept the rocket launcher after getting the missile launcher, it's because I love my Juggler trait and (7) happens to be a favorite weapon key.  With the backpack for storing big ammo piles I figured I could afford the space.

Anyway, woohoo! Sorry if the wall of text is a little excessive.

No apologies needed!  A good victory deserves some text to go with it.

Congrats on a well-played run, especially after that huge all-in at the Lava Pits.  Platinum never tasted so sweet!

I notice that you took Brute a bit later than I'm usually comfortable with; I'm always afraid that I won't get enough XP to get Berserker before the Unholy Cathedral.  Do you remember how far along you were when you finally got Berserker?  Typically I go for Juggler ASAP, so that slows down my usual MAc build compared to yours.

Discussion / Re: Nightmare! Tips
« on: March 26, 2011, 14:52 »
Everything that GameHunter said is good advice.  I would also like to mention what I call "Corpse Management":

* If you kill monsters that are standing in water then they cannot respawn because no corpse is created.  Therefore it's sometimes worth it to herd enemies into a pool of water.
* Occasionally you'll get a level feeling indicating that there's a lever which can flood the entire level with water.  This is a great find on Nightmare, as it means you can clear the entire level without worrying about enemies respawning.
* If you kill a monster which is standing on top of another corpse then a new corpse is not created - you can reduce the potential number of respawns this way.
* Gibbing corpses with barrels / rockets can prevent monsters from respawning, but this is not 100% effective because gibbing is somewhat random
* Acid and napalm barrels are very effective at destroying corpses - napalm is 100% effective, while acid is somewhat less than that

I only had about 20 minutes to play DoomRL, so I started out just messing around - I was not expecting a win!  My goal was just to play as fast as possible.  I made plenty of near-fatal mistakes just by not thinking about my moves clearly.  At one point I was literally running around Phobos Hell with just 1 HP thinking I was a dead man.  And then I saw it... the most beautiful Large Health Globe that I'd ever laid eyes on.  It was sitting right next to two barrels of Napalm, but with only 1 HP I had very little to lose.

And so I finished the run in 15 minutes, 8 seconds.

Alas, AoB challenge is not eligible for the Speedrunner badges.  And I needed those, too :(

Discussion / Re: Assemblies and game balance
« on: March 18, 2011, 04:54 »
The Elephant Gun hits almost as hard (12d3 vs. 16d3 if I'm understanding the double shotgun bug right) at a considerably longer range. Shottyman completely negates the reload issue.

But consider the following: If you take a regular combat shotty and apply a technical mod pack then you can fire in 0.8 seconds and pump in the next shell in 0.2 seconds.  That's a total of 1 second per shell, at least for the first 5 shots.

With the elephant gun it'll cost you 1 second to fire plus your movement speed to reload (usually around 0.6 or 0.7 for me since Hellrunner is blocked on MAD runs).  Once you factor in the movement time, the DPS of the elephant gun is worse than the modded combat shotgun.

Also, I'm almost always using my shotguns from cover.  Shottyman is practically useless in that situation because I don't want to step outside of my cover.  If I take a step backwards and then forwards then the sum cost of two steps is just as slow as a regular reload.

Discussion / Re: Assemblies and game balance
« on: March 17, 2011, 20:06 »
I've completed several runs since 0.9.9.2 was released, so I figured I'd just throw in my $0.02 regarding the basic assemblies.  I still don't have much experience with advanced/master assemblies, so I won't comment on those.

Tactical Boots
Of all the assemblies, the tactical boots are the only basic assembly that I think borders on being overpowered.  Out of a dozen runs I've only regretted using these boots once (lots of lava to run across), and that was an extreme situation which could have otherwise been mitigated using other means: environment suit, powerups, etc...

If it were up to me I would remove the knockback resistance.  Otherwise the only reason I would *not* make these boots is because I want to use the mods on a plasma rifle instead.

Tactical Armor
This assembly is pretty well-balanced IMO.  Useful for much of the game, but not overpowered.  The level of protection is an obvious drawback, but regen and speed make the assembly tempting anyway.

However, if I have to choose between tactical boots and tactical armor, I'll choose to make the boots every time - and it's pretty rare that I fail to find steel boots before the Chained Court.

Speedloader Pistol
Meh.  I'm not crazy about this assembly.  If I'm focusing on pistols then I usually go for Gun Kata, which makes reload time irrelevant (except for Cybie - but he's easy to dodge anyway).  And if I'm not focusing on pistols then I'm certainly not going to waste mod packs on them.

Elephant Gun
There's almost no reason to make this gun, especially since it uses up valuable power mods that could be applied to armor.  Shotty users will usually find a double shotgun long before acquiring two power mods.  At short range the double shotgun has a bigger punch, and at long range this gun is practically the same as the combat shotty but with poorer reload time.

Chainsword
No use outside of a Strongman Badge attempt, but that's probably reason enough to leave this assembly alone.

Gatling Gun
This is a great assembly.  It's definitely an upgrade to the standard chaingun, but not quite as good as a plasma rifle.  It's not a no-brainer either, as you might want to keep the bulk mods around for an eventual BFG upgrade.

Micro Launcher
Why would I want one of my biggest guns to do *less* damage?  Seriously, if I want a launcher more suited for combat then I'll probably clean out The Wall and grab a missile launcher.  Its 4-rocket capacity is much better suited to heavy combat situations than the negligible speed improvements of the Micro Launcher.  Practically speaking, most of my rockets are used for busting walls anyway - so this assembly is a definite downgrade.

Nanofiber Armor
Personally I'll never use it because I hate speed penalties.  The assembly might appeal to other players.

High Power Weapon
As other posters have mentioned I think the clip size penalty is too harsh.  I've used these with Ammochain (since clip size doesn't matter), but even then it was a tough decision - I'd already invested in Whizkid at that point, and I could just as easily have preferred to stick some agility mods on the gun instead.

Woohoo!  I thought I was going to have much more trouble with this badge, but I guess luck was on my side.  This was my second attempt (first ended rather abruptly).

There were a couple of close calls (although I suppose with only 10 HP the whole game is a close call):
- I finished clearing a cave-like level at one point, only to find the stairs behind 3 tiles of lava.  No environment suit.  Fortunately there was a Invulnerability Globe on the level.  It was so far away that if I hadn't removed my armor before attempting the run then I might not have made it.
- For more than half of the game I was relying almost exclusively on a combat shotgun for scouting and killing stuff (chaingun too unreliable due to poor accuracy and no damage buffs).  At about level 13 I was down to my last 10 shells when the RNG was merciful and gifted me with 3 former sergeants.  Back in the game!
- Encountered two Arachnotron caves; had to use a homing phase for one of them, and the last one probably would have killed me if the stairs hadn't been within running distance.
