Hold on a second... Army of Darkness?
Don't you mean Army of the Dead?

Ha!  You're right... I've been misreading that trait name since I started playing DoomRL.  I always thought it was a reference to Ash and his trusty boomstick in the Army of Darkness movie.

I just had a thought.  Is it possible that knockback is the problem here?  I don't know what the normal order of events is, but if knockback is performed before enemies actually take damage from the shotgun blast then the damage could be significantly nerfed.  This gun routinely knocks enemies back 3-4 squares.  If the damage is calculated after the knockback then that's a reduction from 72 damage to 40, which would explain the results I'm seeing.

Discussion / [0.9.9.2] Why do my shotguns suck?
« on: March 15, 2011, 07:49 »
I already have Army of Darkness, so armor shouldn't be a problem.  I'm wielding a double shotgun that's been modded with a Firestorm mod pack.  The description *says* that it should be doing (8d3)x5 damage.  By my calculations that's an average of 72 damage at point-blank range (1 tile).

...and yet I still consistently fail to kill Cacodemons (40 hp according to the wiki) with one shot, even at point-blank range.

Here's my math:
8d3 damage = 16 average
x5 multiplier = 80
x 0.9 range falloff at 1 tile = 72
Army of Darkness = no armor adjustment

Am I doing something wrong?  Why do my shotguns suck?

EDIT: Oh, my trusty combat shotgun seems to perform just fine.  It's really only the double shotgun that seems to suck more than its description would imply.

0.9.9.2 / Re: [U|AoH|91%|8|YASD] nanofibre cybernetic armour
« on: March 08, 2011, 10:18 »
Walking around on Phobos Hell level 8 with less than 80% health is a huge mistake IMO.  Doing it with a 55% movement speed penalty and on Ultra-Violence is just begging for instant death.  Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I think you deserved to die.  Even at 100% health you're never completely safe at that depth and difficulty level.

I think the biggest lesson here is that movement penalties are terminally dangerous - particularly because you often don't notice there's a problem until a pack of Revenants and Mancubi all get double moves on you.  Think about it - every step for you was the time-penalty equivalent of reloading a rocket launcher!

The other lesson is that there's no reason to hoard small medkits at that depth.  They're practically useless in heavy combat because the monsters you're facing deal damage too quickly.  Their only practical use is when you're not immediately threatened but need some health.  (I suppose you could argue keeping them around for stamina boosts, but with 1.55 base movement speed you're not going to be able to run away from anything).

Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.2] BFG ball sequence
« on: February 14, 2011, 12:47 »
One of the nice qualities of the old, synchronous animation system was cause-and-effect were visually obvious.  Imp fireball explodes barrel X, which explodes barrel Y, which blasts a hole in the wall, which gives LOS to an Arch-Vile who then kills you.  Without knowing the order of events which cause the ultimate result, players may end up thinking to themselves "How the heck did THAT just happen?"  Learning from your mistakes becomes harder because causality is no longer obvious.

Also, I used to really like shooting stuff in levels full of barrels and then watching explosions go off for 30 seconds in a giant chain reaction :)

Finally, I just noticed that Dual Gunner is a little tough to use with asynchronous animation.  Both pistols animate at the same time, so there's no visual indication of whether you just fired one bullet or two.

Wow, I'm still sweating after this run!

I must have died 50 times going for this badge.  Frankly if it weren't for Intuition 2 I don't think I could have pulled it off.  If you don't know where the enemies are grouped then WHAM - you're dead in one turn.

I had to move... so.... slowly... to keep myself from double-tapping keys (which usually results in death) and from accidentally not noticing enemies respawning behind me.  I had so many close calls that I can't possibly remember them all.  The most drawn-out, though, was Phobos Hell Level 8.  It was a cave of Pain Elementals, and I was nearly out of ammunition.  No shells, a few rockets, and dwindling supplies of bullets and power cells.  I was forced to whip out the BFG twice to keep from being overrun.  Thankfully some Arachnotrons donated their precious cells to my cause on level 9.

Discussion / Re: That damn 'zerk bug...

I think I found it.  <snip> 100% of the time if berserker triggers on the killing blow the armor bonus does *NOT* kick in. Luckily if the berserker triggers on a *NON*-lethal blow everything seems to work fine. I didn't test the damage output though.

That's some great detective work.  Good job.

I just experienced the bug twice in a row.  Phobos Base, Level 7, Ultra-Violence.  I was not wearing any armor.  I was already tired.  After using a medkit, I returned to cautious - but the zerk armor still wasn't working.

EDIT: It just happened to me again on level 10.  This time I was not already tired, and I was wearing red armor [48%].

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|12%|AoPc|YAVP] Pacifism Gold
« on: August 18, 2010, 07:11 »
Congratulations on your first N! victory. FYI, the title reads "Pacifism Gold" when it should read "Pacifism Platinum", utterly confusing me before I read the mortem.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I corrected it.

Quote
Looks like a real bare-boned finish, too. Best way to end in Pacifism, I say: extra gear makes it look like you got too lucky. Best of luck to you, should you attempt the Diamond anytime soon.

Oh, I was extremely lucky with orbs.  Just not in the inventory department :)

I've never managed to win any Nightmare! game until now, despite a few dozen attempts.  Given my previous lack of success, I don't know why I attempted Pacifism... but somehow I survived all the way to level 25.  In fact, this actually felt easier than other Nightmare! games.  You don't have to worry much about monsters coming back to life, as you don't kill many in the first place :)

If not for a few timely invulnerability globes (and the increased effectiveness of said globes in Nightmare!) I would have died many times over.  On at least two occasions I had to run through arena-style levels packed with Viles in all directions, and no phase devices to help.

Requests For Features / Re: Online database?

If the seed value for the random number generator is provided along with the list of commands then that ought to be sufficient to replay a game.  Depending on how saved games are implemented, you might need to include a different seed value for the start of each level.

Monster movement, dodging, level generation, item drops, etc... can all be replicated exactly with the correct seed (and assuming player commands are issued exactly as before).

Discussion / Re: Levers
« on: August 04, 2010, 11:25 »
Stand on the lever and press the key bound to the "use" action.

I just learned the hard way: this is exactly why you should get in the habit of using the inventory screen to activate items such as medkits and phase devices.  It really sucks when you press "use" to use a medkit and then the level floods with lava (oops, forgot about that lever I was standing on).
