Requests For Features / Ironman needs more love
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:46 »
Super Soldier
Requires: Ironman (2)
When everything FUBARed, your squad could rely on you to keep on firing. You don't have a squad to fall back on anymore, but you do have these nifty little pills the army kept feeding you! The first level of this trait allows you use any med-packs instantly. The second extends your habit to all usable items.

Deathless
Requires: Super Soldier (1), Dodgemaster (1)
Blocks: Tough as nails, Brute, Son of a bitch
How many times do they have to kill you?! You're not sure yet, but you have a way of emerging from a hellstorm of bullets with nothing worse than surface wounds. With this trait, any turn that would have killed you from 1 HP or more instead leaves you alive with zero.
(NB Medial Armor obviously wouldn't work at that point.)

Alternatively ...

Deathseeker
Requires: Ironman (3), Intuition (1)
Blocks: Reloader, Finesse, Hellrunner
Your mates called you a thrill seeker. Your parents called you an adrenaline junkie. Your psychologist called you crazy. But in your dreams you can see the Reaper, and he is you. The trait reduces your movement, fire and reload times by 2% for every 3 HP you lose.

Discussion / Re: About the Gambler's Shield medal
« on: February 27, 2011, 21:14 »
Unless the number of levers is difficulty-dependent (in which I need to man up and try for more gold badges) or else I have been godly unlucky so far, I dispute that statistic. I don't recall levers appearing at all in cave or arena layouts, and it's not uncommon to find zero on a given level of any other type.

This feels like the Aurora Medallion all over again, except as well as luck you also need to continually take risks with your serious characters. Forget that, my 20/40 medals right now are nicely even anyway. :P

0.9.9.2 / [E|fists|78%|YAVP] For reals this time!
« on: February 27, 2011, 20:49 »
So despite finding TWO nukes this time, I challenged the cyberdemon to a showdown with good old fisticuffs. This was initially less than successful. Fortunately my berserk kicked in half way through my med-packs, greatly increasing my strength and making it trivial to finish him off!

Those are all TV Tropes links, BTW. You're welcome for the time I just killed. :)

Requests For Features / Re: The Horrible Ideas Thread
« on: February 27, 2011, 18:58 »
To be balanced, add a new lever effect with the identical message "The smell of a massacre..." that instagibs you instead of enemies. Do not include this change in the version notes.

From now on, playing on ITYTD move will automatically colour your marine pink. Instead of blood, you leave trails of flowers. Hits are replaced with 'distance hugs' and deaths with 'just remembered they were late for a meeting'. Guns are friendship beads (2d6 damage to meanness). The full ending is unlocked by showing the cyberdemon your Thermonuclear Bomb Protest Sign and accepting his invitation to tea with his best friend Jesus Christ.

Arachnotrons are wussy in melee, give them a touch of death attack that bypasses armor and invulnerability.

Killing the cyberdemon with a melee weapon splits it into two fully healed cyberdemons.

Barons of hell can now pick up and activate nukes.

Splash damage from explosions will now detonate rockets as well as barrels. This includes any in your inventory. The damage stacks.

Megaspheres are now ten times more common, but have a 90% chance of being a trap and spawning up to 8 arch-viles around you.

Vulnerability globes. They tire you out, reduce your health to 1, unload all of your weapons and dump your entire inventory and equipment on the floor. On the upside they can remove cursed armor, but they cease working when less than half of the level's enemies remain.

Paint mod pack. It doesn't increase any stats, but your flaming decal BFG has never looked so cool.

Jumbo med-pack. It heals you up to 200%, but you immediately vomit and are left helpless for ten game seconds. Consuming more than one increases all your speeds by .05 each use.

New unique: Antimatter Bomb. It destroys the entire planet, leaving you floating in space until your invulnerability wears off you and splatter. Partial victory, I guess?

New unique: Home-ing Phase Device. It resets your experience and sends you back to phobos base. It tires you, but isn't destroyed upon use. Unique hoarding time.

Special level: Hell's Lavatory. It's like the lava pits, only with acid and no enemies or rewards. It replaces Hell's Armory with a 50% chance.

Angel of 1000. Expect JC caves by level 150.

Angel of 1. For those with really short coffee breaks. Oh, and the one level is phobos arena.

Angel of Apollo: You begin with a (cursed) nano-modded rocket launcher, red armor and plasteel boots. You may swap armor, but if the set you are wearing is ever completely destroyed you instantly suffocate.

... wait a second, that last one sounds awesome.

Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.2] no ammo from gibbed enemies
« on: February 27, 2011, 17:33 »
Source material notwithstanding, it doesn't sound very thematic for you to hack up a former human into chunks flesh, splattering blood everywhere ... and then find a nice, neat pile of ammunition left behind. Plus it's a nice bit of game balance the way it is now - if you're overkilling the enemies you probably don't also need their usual drops.

Off Topic / Re: Now playing... (games)

Other than DoomRL, I am very slowly working my way through a list of semi-recent popular Interactive Fiction games. Some are really good, but I invariably end up spoiling half the puzzles to see the ends of the stories and try out the next one.

Tsk.
You must hate me, I've never even played the original Doom.

Discussion / Re: Assemblies thoughts
« on: February 27, 2011, 07:45 »
It's like somebody took all the thoughts I couldn't be bothered to type ... and then typed them! :D

Only thing I feel like adding is that having so many assemblies require the nano mod explicitly is really annoying for completionist players or even those who just want to try a few out. Waiting for a specific unique to spawn takes forever +1 and the one place it can appear regularly often rewards something less helpful and just as often doesn't appear in a given game at all.

Okay, I have to admit, this is the first mortem dump which has emotionally moved me by the end of it. Nice win, and very nice storytelling. :)

0.9.9.2 / Re: [E|fists|24|YASD] Revenant spam is not okay
« on: February 27, 2011, 07:24 »
Maths time!

When I entered level 24, I was holding (I think) 10 large med-packs. Let's say my armour on average cancels out any approach damage. TaN's damage reduction would still have let me take 3 nude melee hits from the cyberdemon before needing to heal. I could have made 3 safe attacks + 2 more after each medpack, so 23 total. Brute's attack bonus minus Cybie's natural armour would have averaged 6 damage a hit. Multiply that out, I was guaranteed to take down 2/3rds of Cybie's ITYTD health. Not quite enough, but call it a coin flip that my berserking would have kicked in half way through and ...

Sigh. Now I feel obliged to try this run again tomorrow, just for how awesome it could be.

Can you get this medal in an Ao100 run, and if not, what's the chance of > 25 levers actually spawning in a normal game? :/

Well, I've only tried for it once, but I swear I found like 6. At least I finally got that ITYTD full win. MLIA.

Requests For Features / Enemy suicide counter
« on: February 27, 2011, 00:32 »
Listen. Maneuvering enemies into killing themselves is too fun for DoomRL to NOT be keeping track of. I suggest changing the mortem kill percentage line to something like:

X out of Y hellspawn perished in his wake. (X/Y%)
Z killed themselves rather than face him!

You could also add a medal for Z reaching a high enough number, or percentage of total kills after a win (AoPc excluded). As for actually coding this ... I'm not sure how each turn is calculated (ie. if you could check whether an enemy was dying during the player's action or not) but an extra variable for who shot any given bullet or whose bullet caused any given barrel to explode shouldn't be too hard, right? [/clueless]
