the need for food is meant to force players to dive deeper. doomrl has no need for such a mechanic because there's no benefit to hanging around and you can't revisit levels.

Has there ever been a roguelike other than DoomRL made where killing random wildlife isn't a major part of both the gameplay and fun included in the game? And more to the point, when the previous part is true, did they all turn out to be awesome?

Actually, I think this covers all decent rpgs. Maybe as an allegory of the human condition or something.

I'll keep thinking on this.......

We should probably all take a moment to stop and thank the moderators. It's generally a thankless job cleaning up spam and keeping people civil, but we all benefit from it. I guess it helps that almost 0% of the user base are idiots (I can't place my finger on it, but I could have sworn I saw one post were I thought the poster was an idiot). Still any time I've seen a spam post it goes away pretty quickly. Great job.

Guys, it's obvious that Angles is in Hell right now. He is under the effects of the Hercules Complex from Doom 3 which causes people to never get tired and gives you infinite stamina in Hell. Angles, everything is going to be okay, just keep running and avoid the center of the map. We'll put together a squad and go rescue you.

It got removed, but I think it destroyed a system file. Every time I boot up my computer, I get the message "Windows could not find WOW64" or something similar to that.

Yeah, I will after I back up my hard drive. According to a quick Google search, WOW64 is the file that allows my computer to run 36 bit programs. 36 bit programs still run completely fine, though...

Terribly unlucky today. Oh come on, how fair is it that the game is littering every map with armor shards, but doesn't generate any armor (not even by the time I start to see barons and commandos)? Combat shotguns came extremely late too. I was also aiming to go for an assault rifle 3 or 4 times, and I've seen any kind of mod except agility (except once in CC+, which I got after managing to beat hmp HArena without combat shotty nor armor).
This is pissing me off pretty bad...

I remember seeing an article that apparently a placebo can still work if you tell them it's a placebo, so the answer to B might indeed be that it works better. Can't say anything about A, but if you make the message flashy enough, probably it would sell better as well.

Some us unfortunately have to celebrate it by going to work. On the other hand, we have today off to celebrate the birthday of a redundant monarch (ie the current one), on the date of birth of another redundant monarch (her mother). Americans look American when they're being patriotic, the Dutch simply tend to look stupid: "Oooooh I found an inflatable red, white and blue windmill that fits on my head...." I can't even continue this train of thought.

We have millions/billions to economize, which is along the same lines of the royal family's allowance, for looking nice in pictures with other world leaders. Yeah, isn't it amazing how some songs never fail to put you in a good mood? This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eab5mqt2wpw) always does the trick for me, even though, upon closer inspection, the lyrics are actually really depressing. The raw energy of combined music and lyrics really gets my adreline going, though.

On a different note, there's some songs that never fail to get me melancholy. Check this one out, it's Dutch but you can probably find a halfway decent translation if you want (or I'll do it for you); the title roughly translates to 'All I want is to go swimming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYl-HO_3Jp0)'. It starts of really laid-back, but the build-up is brilliant and when it reaches its peak it just makes you want to float around in bittersweet agony. This guy is a genius when it comes to slapping sounds and melodies together and create songs out of them - or, for that matter, slapping words and expressions together in order to convey a message. If the translation you might find doesn't make a lot of sense, then it might well be correct.

I may sound completely backwards, what with the song sounding how it is, but when it's playing and I look out the window, I seem to forget whatever was troubling me and take a few minutes to realise just how fortunate I am.

Heh :) Not much of a sports fan myself (although I like to play squash to keep in shape, and very much enjoy watching a good rugby match). I would be much obliged if you can post daily updates on numbers of teeth knocked out (hardest hitters, most easily bruised, etc). Random violence makes sport fun :)

Heh, I know the feeling. Try being a drummer and watching Chris Pennie - the original drummer for Dillinger Escape Plan - at work. It's very dispiriting, not only is he extremely fast, but the time signatures are simply insane. On the other hand, these guys can even make a 4/4 sound completely alien: check out the intro to Panasonic Youth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGNb-YT5ECA), which inconspicuously maintains 4 over 4 for more than half a minute.

On the subject: end of last week I bought the album 'Ex Lives' by Every Time I Die. Woah. I knew I was going to be in for a treat, but it's just bloody amazing. It's sort of a crossbreed between metal, metalcore and mathcore, reminding me of Slayer, Dillinger, Botch, Melvins and more. Vocals are brilliant going from a great metalcore style grunt to a really nice and crisp singing voice, and sometimes layering one on top of the other Clutch-style for a really great effect.

Check out Revival Mode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEp-Owhqbr0), which is actually the most easy-going song on the album but with an incredibly creepy video. The video for the opening track, Underwater Bimbos From Outer Space (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1gi_aOe334&feature=relmfu) is pretty sickening as well, and the song is more representative for the rest of the album.
Greatest in my opinion is Partying Is Such Sweet Sorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrU-YBrOZfs), since it goes virtually everywhere - the banjo intro kinda gives it away - and makes best use of the singer's vocal talent, especially the part starting at 0:55.
