Play-By-Forum / If I were to try to PBF a boardgame...

Hi. Long time no see. I was kinda absent for a while, and I see I've missed a lot.

So, if I were to try to PBF a boardgame here, would anybody actually play that? You know, not those make-believe games which have flooded this entire forum, but rather those boardgames where you constantly roll dice and move figures around? Like snakes and ladders except much more complicated?

Preceding the question "what boardgame?" -  a one you never heard about, because it's of my own creation. All I can say that it's based on Doom the Boardgame(although the basic idea of the game has changed a LOT), and it is somewhat like chess, except much less boring and much more imbalanced.

So if anybody shows interest in playing a boardgame over a forum, I'll post the rules of it. There is no hard limit on amount of players, though the maximum amount I have attempted is 3 and I have no idea how well it will work with more.

Someone said I will have troubles during AoMr? Well, not very much!
That was harder than my melee run(17 tries compared to 8), but easier than my first HNTR win ever(34 tries compared to 17). So, it's far not that hard. Even the revenants weren't that much of a problem.
Altho, for the E3M7 and Dis, I've encountered the worst problem I could ever encounter in the whole game... AMMO LACKAGE.
No, seriously, thats awful. The latter levels don't hold any bullets AT ALL. I haven't found any for several levels, holding purely on ammo chains I gathered from Phobos and Deimos(and 5 stacks 100 bullets each). That was pretty much the only reason I just nuked mastermind without trying to kill it by conventional means(or eathing the lava element and fighting JC).

Welp.

Also, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. 99%. Could that be caused by the fact that I nuked the mastermind? Because I don't remember exiting any level without "feeling myself relatively safe" before.

Also, is it just me or my generic YAVP has MUCH more self-saves than a generic YAVP of a generic guy around?

EDIT: god, I just noticed that I had a BFG9000 in inventory. What it did there providing I couldn't use it? Talisman? lol

Welp, subj. If you wield two pistols, and you know the dualgunner trait, normal reload suddenly becomes dualreload, and alternate reload suddenly becomes single reload. Because, you know, dualreload is used much more often than single reload(especially if you use pistols with high clip size/low reload time), and I don't really like to switch my habits from R to Shift+R. Altho, what I fear more, is continiously clicking Shift+R to reload when I will go back to non-pistol builds.
Or, if you try R while one pistol is fully loaded, and while prepared isn't, you reload the prepared.

EDIT: Oh god, even worse. I started to pressing Shift+F instead of F because of that goddamn reload. Thats not good at all.

My second HNTR win, as a melee marine build. I must say that this is NOTHING compared to my first HNTR, generic technican build.

For first few levels, my character was really bad. The melee weapons were pretty much useless anywhere apart from the Chained Court where berserk packs lie everywhere. After a few deaths, I realized that and used chaingun and double barreled shotgun(which I found at E1M2 lol) everywhere. But when I got the Berserker trait at the Wall(this could actually happen earlier, at Hell Arena)...

...my completely idiotic doomguy transformed into a machine of mass destruction, eviscerating pretty much everything that stood in the way.

Since then, there were almost NO moments where I ever opted to use anything exept the thrusty Butcher's Cleaver, and, after UC, the Spear. The only exeptions were:
Shambler fight, where I decided to use SSG and Shell Box instead. I feel like I could easily do that with cleaver, but I then still underestimated the power of melee.
A few tight moments where I couldnt get in luck of berserking and opted to chaingun everything
The Mortuary. I feel like I could do that with melee only, but hell, I've stacked myself with 950(!) cells for a reason! BFG SPAMMAGE
E3M6 where I got in a tight situation featuring mancubi and archvile spam. Nothing a bit of BFG spam couldn't fix.

For pretty much everything else, everything, I used melee and only melee. Even for cybie, mastermind and JC.
BTW, first full win. I couldn't stack up on envirosuit packs previous time and couldn't get the lava element, neither I had the luck to get an invulnerability sphere before the stairs, so only standart win. Killed that bitch with a bfg instead of thermonuke, tho.

So, summary: while opting to options any sane human would do in a real life situation(e.g. heavy firepower weapons), I've died 33 times before getting a first win. While opting to crazy suicidal melee berserk charges, I've died 8 times before getting a win, and 6 of theese happened before I could get berserker trait, with seventh being in Vaults and eight being on Lava Pits(accidently derped myself).

TL;DR - Novices, use melee builds. NOW.

Requests For Features / Some mostly cosmetic suggestions.

Me again. I decided to put everything in one topic instead of spamming them.

First of all. I am almost sure this has been mentioned before, but I am still asking for it.

SAVES AT ANY TIME OF THE LEVEL

No, seriously. Losing an almost ideal game just because I had to quickly shutdown computer in the start of the level and therefore commiting suicide is not fun. At all.

2) With the graphics version being released(which, btw, is awesome), most of problems with mistaking cacodemons, berserks and large medpacks with blood got fixed right. But a new problem arised - the automap. In general, I can't see things on it. On the other hand, making it larger/less translucent can make it obscurive, so, a button should be made that turns on/off map mode, which shows an automap on the full screen size. I would suggest TAB as map button and moving run button to SHIFT, because, well, thats how it is done in original game. But where it will be isn't that important. Of course, the map mode won't apply to the console version because the whole version is in "perma-map" mode.

3) Can HUD show the spare ammo left for the currently wielded weapon? Because, I don't really like if I have to hit "I" to check it.

4) Can there be a "use from the floor" button? So, if you find something you could use right away, and your inventory happens to be full, you could just run over that thing and press a single button instead of dropping something, picking that thing up, using it, moving to one of the adjacent squares and pick back the thing you dropped. That's QUITE tedious. If you'd use that on a weapon/armor, you wield it, if on a consumable, you use it, if on a mod pack, you modify whatever you can.

5) For the same reason, can ammo chains/shell boxes be wieldable? So, if you want to place something else in prepared slot, you don't have to unprepare the chain/box, swap, select the weapon you want and then, in case your inventory was full again, picking chain/box again, but you could just swap the weapon with the chain/box and select the weapon of your choice. Of course, if you try to fire/reload the chain/box, it won't do anything.(altho would be fun if you could take a bullet from the chain and throw it in the nearest monster for lulz)

6) I don't seem to be able to scrap chainsaw with technican's scavenger perk. Am I doing something wrong or that's supposed to be?

7) While that's more of a bug, I'm still writing it here. Stats say I've encountered five bullet proof vests, but I am sure I've seen only one.

Requests For Features / Some kind of cruise mode or something

No ideas how to name it, but, there is a thing in current Doom RL that should be somehow countered.

The thing is that I like to just hold down the arrow key and blaze trough the level at lightning speeds. The problem is, due to me moving at exessively high speed(I mean realtime) I can bump in a room with monsters and fail to react and stop in time, resulting in continuing moving forward and taking a few hits. I am also a fan of not using portable medkits til very, very dire need, and therefore often run around with less than 30 hp, so taking those few hits can end up being fatal. Of course, I could just not run around like crazy in first place, but that's boring.

What solution I am suggesting? Well, normally, you just can't hold the movement keys. The game won't do anything, it will require you to move space by space, space by space. But then, you can enter some mode where you can hold the arrows and run around like crazy. But, if a monster is spotted, or you're being attacked, or something else bad happens, the mode is automatically exited, and you stop, instead of continuing running and taking hits from monsters.

Well, at least something like that.
