Requests For Features / Re: AoB improvement discussion
« on: January 20, 2009, 15:46 »
Start the character with an Advanced Combat Knife.

Also allow mods to be applied to all melee weapons.

Accuracy mods on the chainsaw or on a combat knife would help them a lot. An advanced Combat Knife may even make it so the character will want to stick with it the whole game after putting some damage, speed, and accuracy mods on it. And put the secret Chained Court mod in an accessible place in AoB and AoMr challenges.

I also like the idea of adding traits to allow dual-wielding Knives. Even if it does not allow chainsaw or the spear it would be useful (and fun) if mods could be applied to Knives. You could also make the Malicious Knives challenge a permanent part of DoomRL.

Discussion / Re: The Big Jump Poll
« on: January 12, 2009, 09:22 »
I voted for the first one. I am currently a Hell Baron General with little prospect of improving since I have not yet completed a Nightmare game and I don't want to spend the time to kill 100,000 enemies.

So I welcome a clean slate. It will give me the feeling of achieving things again. :)

The only thing I dread is having to complete the Masochism challenge again. That one was really hard for me.

Requests For Features / Rank requirements
« on: November 04, 2008, 13:15 »
I finally hunted down my 500th Mancubus to achieve Mancubus rank. Holy crap that was tedious!

I am going to echo the suggestion of Blade (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php?topic=1583.0).

The Rank requirements should be tweaked.

Just like Blade, I also jumped straight to Hell Knight rank because by the time I hunted down 500 Mancubi I had already met the requirements for the next rank.

For Hell Baron rank, I have already met the 800 Hell Baron kills (I have 1635) and the 5000 melee kills (I have 6946), but the 100,000 total kills seems a bit extreme. I have 46,240 total kills and I cannot imagine playing the game enough to get 100,000 kills. That could take a couple more years. I am all for long-term goals, but in the interest of making the goals do-able I think they should be modified so they are more attainable.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [M|AoMr|99%|YaSD] Good Luck, Bad Luck
« on: October 20, 2008, 13:18 »
It seems like when you get that kind of amazing luck the game is just setting you up for a YASD.

Too bad you got cornered. I hate it when I just get crunched in one turn without a chance to use a phase device or med-pack.

I probably would have kept the Advanced Pistol, though. After a few mods it ends up much better overall than the Beretta IMO.

Century Lounge / [H|Ao100|100%|YAVP] Mancubi Hunting
« on: October 20, 2008, 13:12 »
I am currently trying to get to the Mancubus rank and I figure that playing Ao100 gives me the best chance of finding lots of them. So I have been doing lots of Ao100 runs, but this one I actually managed to finish.

In this game, I decided to try for 100% kills and dual-wielding pistols. Good fortune gave me the Blaster on level 11 and an Advanced Pistol on around level 30. Once I got those I was pretty much unstoppable.

I also found a couple BFGs which I picked up for fun. I used them on about three levels when I was just too lazy to clear things with the pistols. :)

Ha ha! This game was fun! I loved having the extra inventory slots, but it made me too greedy. I ended up carrying piles of Large Medi-Packs and didn't have enough ammo. I still carried quite a bit of ammo, of course (perhaps 800 rounds) but I did not run into very many 100mm users in the last half of my descent.

I actually ran out of ammo fighting the Cyberdemon. If you read the last few messages in the mortem you will see that I had to finish of CD by punching him. :D

It's a good thing I found the Berserk globe or I never would have damaged him enough with my pistol to finish him off.

Anyway, the new damage from acid and lava was terrifying! It will make me think twice about finishing the Chained Court. And the Lava Pit was absolutely brutal! I started with one Enviropack, but that didn't even get me 1/4 of the way across. I was determined to see what was on the other side, so I toughed it out (using up about 5 Large Medi-Packs in the process). I had a Homing Phase device as a last resort if I ever got to the point of having to give up. Otherwise I probably would not have attempted it. Most of the time, though, I will be avoiding that level.

I liked being able to do the Halls of Carnage in an AoM game. I attempted the Wall, because I had read that everything has damage points now, but I am guessing you still cannot shoot through walls. I unloaded about 100 rounds into one wall space and it never was destroyed.

I also tried the Vaults, but had a similar problem. I used a phase device to get inside one of the vaults and cleared it, and then used a homing device to get back out.

I liked only having to put one point into Dualgunner. Since it is only for a specific purpose I think it is a good idea to reduce it to one level. That frees up points for different traits and makes trait choice more interesting (more options is always better and adds variety).

I also really liked the info in the inventory screen. All the inventory improvements are terrific!

Requests For Features / Re: Rewarding persistent players.
« on: March 31, 2008, 08:24 »
I like the idea of building up currency and being able to buy items at the start of the game.

One problem that often frustrates me is starting up a Marksmanship game and then finding the Butcher's Knife, or finding lots of great advanced weapons in a AoB challenge.

It would be very nice to be able to start the game with an advanced chaingun (if I just really wanted to play a chaingun game for example) or with an advanced double shotgun.

Or even buying the guarantee that a certain weapon would be generated before a certain level. So I don't start with an advanced double shotgun, but I knew that I would get one before level 10. That way I could play a Shottyman path game without the fear that I would never have a good weapon generated.

Discussion / Re: Angel of Purity
« on: March 27, 2008, 13:36 »
My approach to AoP is similar.

I went for Intuition so I could use levers to my advantage and know exactly where the enemies were. This helped me to avoid dangerous situations and also to be able to kill them off-screen.

My traits were:
EE->EE->Int->Iro->Iro->Iro->Int->Int->SoB->

I just used a Chaingun with a Damage mod and a Rocket Launcher with a Reload mod. I carried a Double Shotgun as a backup weapon but rarely used it once I could sense enemy locations.

Discussion / Re: Tips for AoB?

That is a good tip about taking Eagle Eye. The Chainsaw does have awful accuracy. At least one level in EE is probably a really good investment.

Discussion / Re: Tips for AoB?
« on: March 07, 2008, 14:15 »
Here are my general strategy tips for AoB:

1. Use the luring technique to kill former humans, hell knights, and barons.
Carry around 5 pistols with you for this purpose. If you know some of the above are on the other side of a doorway, drop a pistol in front of the door, move to the side one square (so you will be outside of their vision when the door opens) and open the door. Wait until they come to fetch the pistol and stab them repeatedly.
If you find one of the above mentioned enemies in the open, drop a pistol where you are. Move backwards towards a doorway, dropping pistols as needed to continue the trail. Wait on the other side of the doorway until they show up and then stab them repeatedly.
It takes a little experience to figure out exactly how the enemy movement and vision works and there are some quirks with it, but it is generally straight forward.

2. Avoid death until you get the chainsaw. This means avoiding demons at almost all costs. Also avoid imps, and rooms with levers unless you can get them in close range.

3. For trait path, do Brute->Brute->Berserker->Berserker->Berserker.
Maxing berserker is very important. When you are berserk, your movement bonus allows you to close with enemies very quickly. After that, do Hellrunner, Ironman, more Brute, etc however you feel like. Usually I will do 1 level of Ironman first just to increase my survivability.

4. Don't take chances or get cocky when you get the chainsaw.
Even after you get the chainsaw, the game is hard. Continue to play it safe.

5. Use the running tactic to get places quicker. This can be for getting to a globe, getting away from an enemy (outrunning a demon), running to the stairs, etc. Running is your friend. Globes and medi-packs reset your status to cautious from tired, allowing you to run again.

6. Plan on dying A LOT.
No way around it. It takes a combination of good strategy and some good luck in level layout, medi-packs, globe placement, etc.

Hopefully this is helpful. With some practice you should start to see the chainsaw more and more often. Then eventually you will get a couple games where the stars are aligned and you survive to the Unholy Cathedral. Then the game becomes extremely fun. :)
