Releases / Re: The Inferno Module

Any tips on dealing with Achlyses, especially on higher levels, when I don't have the luxury of killing them one by one? I'm trying to complete Inferno with a Technician - MEn build because I love the survivability it gives against nastier enemies (Revenants, Viles, Mancubi, etc), but Achlys attacks go through all armor and resistances and I can't defend against them at all.

This game started out quite well, with me being able to assemble a speedloader pistol right off the bat, without any startscumming. However, after that I didn't get any real weapon upgrades. I was aiming for a Storm Bolter as I usually do, but no firestorm pack spawned. Then I used up my two power mods on armor and found a sniper mod just sitting right next to my spawn on I believe Deimos level 7. I wanted to hit myself right there. I won't even mention the energy shield that kept me alive for the entirety of Deimos and got destroyed by my carelessness just before Cybie. After that, my speedloader proved pathetically underpowered, even with the insane firing speed I had thanks to my levels in Finesse and SoG and I finally got owned by a Revenant in the Vaults because I hoped to find a new weapon.

Highlights include:
- Beating the Arena without any armor. That was the first time I used up all my medpacks.
- Finding red armor on Phobos level 7, making the Anomaly kind of easy since I didn't have to conserve my armor.
- Picking up every single phase device I found and then forgetting I had them.
- Using up all my medpacks a second time for Cybie.
- Finding out that SoG3 with MSs lets me kill Viles before they can respond.

All in all, I really wish there were more pistol assemblies that didn't require exotic or unique mods.

Okay, so yeah, I overreacted a bit, I managed to get to Hell with a MSs build since I wrote that post, but I feel that it depends too heavily on luck and not just the normal luck of not spawning next to a monster that can kill me immediately or encountering Arachnotron caves. The only times I managed to get beyond the Arena was if it spawned on dlvl 3 instead of 2. And as you said, startscumming for a speedloader is almost certainly a must.

i assumed the agility mods were awards for beating hell's arena or for finding a rocket, this layout cuts the incentive for beating hell's arena drastically.  i'm not sure if that is what you were going for or not, but it is something to take into account (since beating it has a few negative to work with as well)
Well, beating Hell's Arena is still required if you want to get the Arena Master's Staff and it gives nice loot all on its own, so I can't really see your point here.

I've been having trouble playing AoMr in the new version and today it hit me why: in 0.9.9.4 I usually got past the Hellgate with the help of the items and experience from Hell's Armory. In the new version, not only can the Armory not spawn before the Hellgate, but the Gate itself comes 6 dlevels earlier, which means about 2-3 character levels depending on luck. I usually play Technician and go for MSs, since in the previous version, that was a pretty solid build. In the new version, however, it makes me severely underleveled because I don't dare attempt the Arena with only one pistol and the Chained Court is worthless without the Arena completion, because the mods are inaccessible. The Wall was always flat-out impossible, but with the new level progression, having to leave it out hurts much more. I'm lucky if I'm level 5 when I reach the Bruiser Brothers, who are of course just as strong as they were.

Why did you make non-Dualgunner pistol-only builds impossible, dev team? And if you did, why did you make a pistol master trait that forbids it? This smacks of bad design. And regardless of all this the difficulty of AoMr indicated in the menu should really be bumped up to at least Medium.

Because the primary benefit of reloading from a shell box is that it's faster than a standard reload. However, they don't make you move faster, meaning that there's no benefit from using the (limited, non-refillable) boxes for a move-load.
There is a very clear benefit, which is that shell boxes hold twice the amount of ammo that normal stacks do. As it stands, after getting Shottyman, shell boxes, which should be great for conserving inventory space, become USELESS because of this. It's 100 shells that I can't use unless I stop to manually reload. How is that in any way sensible?

Just as the thread title says, moving while having Shottyman reloads from the inventory instead of a prepared shell box. This is something that I've noticed across many playthroughs and I'm not sure if it's intended behaviour (why?) or a bug.

So yeah, Storm Bolter is all kinds of awesome when coupled with MSs. It eats through ammo like nobody's business though. I should probably have taken a few more stacks of 10mm in place of all those medpacks. Playing after the Armory was basically walk-point-shoot-repeat. Anything that didn't fall after one burst got knocked so far back that I was out of its line of sight. Also, two new level events! The frozen one was a bit frightening when I accidentally shot thorugh the entire level, I didn't even notice the other one.

Also, running almost out of ammo on the penultimate level and having to leg it to the stairs sucks big time.

I love Entrenchment.

TaN and Badass, damage resistance bonuses, and on a class with easy access to Whizkid and instant item use to heal up mid-volley? The lack of Reloader is a huge weakness, yeah, but you can hook yourself up with an assault rifle and fix ammo consumption and reloading issues right quick.

Actually, looking at all the traits here, I get the idea the dev team went through and saw what kinds of builds players liked and made master traits to gel with those.
In fact, what with the Chained Court and all, an Assault Rifle is probably the first assembly most Technicians make. And it stays with you for a long time, even after you find a plasma rifle.

But yeah, Techs are basically the best tanks right now. Malicious Blades, Fireangel and Entrenchment are all geared towards taking a lot of damage and Sharpshooter is a godsend for AoMr. It's kind of weird, because you'd expect the Marine to be the tank class, but apart from Survivalist it's more of a kill-them-before-they-can-kill-you type of deal.

After a bit of fumbling around with Scouts and Technicians, I finally managed a decent run (all of my previous characters were killed within the first 6 levels) just to be killed by a ninja Manc. That felt really bad. Highlights include: Hell Champion Medal (fuck yeah), laser rifle on level 5 in a vault, onyx armor on level 7 in another vault, almost no shotgun use after the Arena (very uncharacteristic for me) until I assembled the focused double shotty, about ten technical mod packs (balance the mod packs a bit please, technicals spawn way too often, taking spots from everything else), constant ammo shortage due to prioritizing weapons and consumables (why I needed one of each kind of weapon, I may never know) and being a dumbass and using up all my healing at The Wall because I wanted a good shot.

I've learned that the Technician is an amazing tank, but like all tanks, suffers from lack of mobility. After I assembled the assault rifle, there were levels where I could just stand in place and shoot at everything that came into sight, only stopping when I realized they broke my armor. That's why the onyx armor was such a blessing. Hell, even the Shambler was basically "point and shoot" and that guy killed more of my characters in the previous version than all other enemies combined.

Because avoiding splash damage doesn't really have anything to do with being speedy, and the speed-based class gets a master trait that makes him actually do something faster.

I think of the Technician as someone able to fashion some additional protection or use his armor in a way other people can't.

What's not to like about the class system? Different Doomguys get different useful bonuses, and there's even more traits and possible builds now.
Mostly that there's no "standard" class. Everyone gets some kind of bonus. I'd like if there was a class for old-style DoomRL players with no starting bonuses.

I'm not sure I like the class system. I liked the generic Doom marine that could have any master trait. Also, how does the speed-based class not having Fireangel make sense?

Moreover, I think it should be "covered with blood".
"Covered in blood" would be even better.

It's because of something even I noticed, that while melee is slow to start and has a high mortality rate on the first few levels, it becomes the safest build if it survives them. Melee weapons have good attack speed and some of the best damage in the game with the melee traits backing them, they never run out of ammo, the lack of a need to carry ammo opens up inventory space for health packs, phase devices and other helpful items and as they'll likely spend most of the game after CC zerked, they are pretty much protected from everything that gives other builds grief (VMBR combos, lava rivers, rooms full of commandos, etc).
