Bug Reports / [0997G] Visual failure INT2 - again

Previously discussed and reported for 0996G and deemed 'bug', this still persists: when going Berserk in graphics mode, the red colour scheme makes the INT2 enemy locators more or less invisible. If memory serves, same goes for wearing an envirosuit.

Was this intentionally not altered, or simply overlooked?

Wow, that was brief (yeah it says half an hour, but I was on the phone for half of that).

So: good to be back! Glad to see I still know how stuff works - sort of - and good to know I can still sorely underestimate the Chained Court. It does appear the cacos have either gotten stronger or better AI; both in HA and the CC I got surprised by their attacking behaviour (cornershooting-ish behaviour when I expected it to move, charging into combat when I expected it to shoot).

At first I had some issues with the sound (think it was the music engine), where halfway through a level or 2 the samplerate for playback sounded like it suffered from a heartattack and everything - including gameplay - started stuttering. Readjusting the music/sound volumes halfway through has, until proven otherwise, fixed this. I think I occassionally had the same problem with 0996 as well.

Bonus points on the random name engine. With a first draw like this, I'll be honoured to bear anything the RNG cares to slap on me :)

Let's see how long it takes me to score a win this time around...

Off Topic / Getting reacquainted

Hi everyone,

Since I've been a bad supporter over the past half a year or so, and I suddenly have quite some time on my hands due to personal circumstances, I thought I'd do a proper check-up on how things are going here. Seems I picked the perfect time, with 0997 just being released :) Take a couple of minutes for this little story and then off we go, first game since June or July, I think.

I tried keeping tabs on the forum, especially the PBF bit - I really hope the Dark Heresy thing gets reanimated - but unfortunately several key figures either don't respond to my msgs or seem to have disappeared completely. The Bubblegum thing also petered out just as I was gearing up to step in, it appears.
As such: I'd like to launch a PBF myself, for up to about 4 players. System/rules are of minor importance, setting is up for discussion. Anyone who has ideas, please reply so I can get a feel for things.

In the meantime I've been working on some music as well, finally getting things going. I'm hoping to post my first true production on YouTube soon, and I won't hesitate to annoy you with it. I've been talking to Kornel about contributing music to the Forge on a couple of occassions, but as of yet nothing solid came from this. I am very much willing to try commissioned work though, for games or short animations for example, so anyone who's looking for such, please give me a shout. Check out my YouTube Channel for influences and such; I did upload some songs to which I've contributed, but none of them truly reflect the way I'm heading.

So. Now to descend into Hell and see what's happening.

Discussion / Bounty Research: Level Design and Generation

I've been thinking about posting a bounty for quite some time now, and since I'd rather have Kornel work for my money than simply make another donation, here's what I'm toying with:

{I} New Features
In the past, there has already been some discussion in regard to cosmetic changes in the level design. Some of the features discussed might warrant special attention in regard to side effects they might have, but that's not what I'm currently interested in. I think a little more visual variation might do the game a lot of good. This might range from simply swapping tiles - I seem to remember dark blue floors in some of the UAC bases in the original game, to be used in vaults or similar rooms for example - to more complex features that have different effects on visibility, movement and weaponry, depending on the type of feature.
Windows for examply would allow sight and shots to pass through, but would restrict movement (possible exceptions for Souls and Arachnotrons, which I remember being tiny); force fields/barriers would only allow sight to pass; other contraptions could only allow movement - think of the rotating fireplace/bookshelf in ScoobyDooesque detective tales.

We'd have to take stock of the possibilities, determine what would be deemed a good addition and what wouldn't be, and see what's feasible to add. Entering phase 1: fire off your ideas! Think of the effects listed above, and possibly more (I'm not a programmer, so I have no idea how vast the sea of flags is), but bear the features or at least the idea of the original Doom in mind.

{II} Prefab Levels - What, In A Roguelike? - Yes, Hear Me Out, Will You?
Except for the special levels such as the Entry, the Arena, the Court, etc, I assume every level is generated randomly at some point during the game. The second part of my suggestion is to create an additional pool of prefab levels that have a small chance of appearing instead of a normal level, decided when determining the level type (cave/maze/arena/etc). These levels could be references to the original Doom, other shoot-em-ups, movies, books, comics, whatever. Content such as monsters and items could still be generated randomly, so in the best case the player only knows what layout to expect. I'm willing to bet a few digits on my left hand that I'm not the only player who's been toying with ideas in this regard, and who knows what talents there may be among us?

You could even run competitions to increase the numbers of these levels while maintaining the quality of the design. Again, it'd all start with getting some ideas going. Somebody'd need to list the basic demands level design would have to meet, and people'd have to get drawing.

So... who's up for it? Post your thoughts, custom features, design ideas or complete designs and whatnot and let's see if we can broaden the content a little. Additionally, since I take it this would also take up a lot of time on the developers' side, who's willing to help me carry this bounty?

Finally: as opposed to all my previous AoPc runs, which - give or take 2 - ended in disaster before the Anomaly was in sight, the RNG finally deemed it fit to smile upon me. With the exception of 2 (normal) levels, I consistently spawned very close to the stairs and/or ran more or less straight at them. OK, so I was at Health 8% coming out of the Anomaly (I actually got shot once standing on the Pentaporter at the end, what the hell?), but having healed from that I never dropped back down below 60%.
I ran through the Tower of Babel without actually seeing the All-But-Gentle Giant (very satisfying to hear its footsteps shift from the right to left speaker), and passed through half of the Hell levels without ever running into anything too. Level 23 treated me to some Vile+Mancubus packs. And a Tracking map.
CUE MANIACAL LAUGHTER

Had armors and medpacks aplenty, as you can see, and even two pairs of boots that I subsequently immediately forgot to wear. I think this one went right by the book, and I was loving every single one of its 580 seconds. My heart was stuck somewhere between my nasal cavity and frontal sinus at the end, but that's a small price to pay.

Now that I'm getting the hang of dying, I might as well sink my teeth in. Another challenge that has thusfar gone uncompleted, but at least this time I was smart enough not to ragequit and watch my bronze go up in smoke.

Thought I'd give Sharpshooter another try, since it's still by far the most impressive build I've seen yet. After fullfilling the SOG requirement, I thought I'd take a detour past WK, since I'd have to assemble a storm bolter on the fly. It was actually a pretty good run; I was too chicken to do the wall, but the Anomaly went well enough without the missile launcher. Deimos got off to a promising start with a demon cave, and on the second level running into a knight I'd previously missed with no cover whatsoever, I simply took a gamble and he fell at my feet after I'd emptied a clip on him.

Then came the pain elemental. Even with a 0.4s fire time it managed to spawn 6 souls in 3 shots (seriously, what the hell?), 2 of which thus hit souls instead - I had no choice but to leg it. Since I obviously had no medpacks and was never going to make it to the door, or at least thought so, I decided to take the honourable way out instead and put a bullet through a barrel of lava I was standing next to.

In light of my previous demise, I might even try and see how many consecutive times I can't suffer death by lava barrel. So far, I'm starting to like it...

While Pacifist Gold is still firmly beyond my grasp (got exactly halfway in just over the required 10 minutes), Bronze is finally coming into view. I almost had this level nailed too when, fleeing from a Knight, I had no choice but to dodge past a lava barrel - which a captain suddenly appearing from the other end subsequently decided to do some target practice on.

I'm finally getting the hang of this challenge, and now I understand why most veterans have such an alarmingly high victory to deaths ratio (Or is it low? Lots of numbers in between either, at least). And why demons are such a complete pain in the ass.

Oh and about 20 out of 28 kills were due to the fact that I died on a level with an armed nuke present.

Dear fellow marines,

As some of you already know, I'm a musician and sound engineer who, after several years of little activity, is working on building a platform upon which to satisfy his creative urges. To achieve this, I'm creating my own semi-professional studio at home, which allows my to remix some of the recordings that I made in the course of my education, and to finally record all the tunes that keep floating through my head.
Eventually, I want to find other musicians to write and play with, and gradually start finding bands that want to have their music produced.

In order to start this all off, I'm creating my portfolio on both Facebook and YouTube, under the name of LuckyDeeIndustries. I hereby cordially invite you to check em out, and Like / Subscride if you like what you see/hear so far. It's still very much in its infancy, but I have more work to upload at hand, and once I have the equipment I want, even more material will be soon to follow.

To give you an idea of what to expect: I'm always on the lookout for music and bands that have their own sound, usually straying from the pop music norm.
Among my influences and music collection you will find names as Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, nearly everything that has Mike Patton in it (Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk e.a.), Helmet, Clutch, Ween, Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Them Crooked Vultures, A Perfect Circle, Kyuss, At the Drive-In, Melvins, And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Mastodon, Primus, Deftones, Massive Attack, Portishead, Zero7, Spinvis, dEUS, Soulwas, Millionaire, System of a Down and many many more.

After a lot of beef with the City of Skulls, and a very lucky run this time around, my first attempt at cracking the Mortuary was hilarious. Scored both the Onyx and Gothic armors on the Vaults, had 3 hatred skulls and 1 fire ready, plus the homing device, plus 2 BFGs. Eventually ended up clearing most of them with the LS, travelling from one supercharge to the next. I only counted 4 viles, so the 5th must have taken terminal offense at my volley of BFG blasts.

With the Angelic Arms and a zerk pack near the stairs to Dis, Spidey was a joke. For some reason I always have enough power to nuke Luxembourg prepared when I don't need it. Not that I care in this case: another 2 Gold in the pocket, which is one more than I needed for Captain. Huzzah!
