Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [U|94%|YAVP] with DEMO!
« on: June 30, 2009, 20:00 »Tell me more about these hit and run tactics...I'm really poor at using the shotgun. All I do is zig-zag forwards and shoot. Or drop items around a corner and hope enemies conveniently wander up to me point blank.QuoteThe arena is too hard to tackle that early in UV, at least for me, so that greatly reduces the chance of getting a rocket launcher...so I had to skip the wall. I really love the backpack though...UV Arena is beatable with a Combat shotgun and around 3 medkits, if you don't mind using hit and run tactics on the Cacos. And probably you don't know but UV The Wall is *NOT* a fun place.
And I just checked the wiki - you're right, it's probably better to skip the wall on UV. The 2 archviles will probably make things rather tough at ~dlvl 7.

I was really surprised to come upon the Blaster so quickly after finding it in a previous run - but I'm not complaining. It really meshes with my playstyle, and allows me to be a lot more reckless - even standing out in the open shooting (lone) enemies. It also frees up loads of inventory slots that ordinarily would go to ammo.Once again I collected a small stack of mods and ended up ditching them one by one for other things. Advanced weapons are so much more mod-friendly than ordinary ones; but it's rare you get an advanced weapon that matches your already-determined build.
Maybe regular weapons should be allowed 2 mods + 2 more for each level of whizkid?
Useless planeshift boots - I already had some boots that gave me +10% speed (and -10% knockback), using the planeshift boots would have given me 5% more speed but a knockback penalty. I love the boots mobility mod.
Badass worked really well with nightmare - since all the powerups healed double as much, there was a much higher tendency to go >100% health, so slower erosion really allowed you to take advantage of that extra health.
Once again 3 Tan + 3 Iron really rocked, especially when my armor kept getting destroyed very quickly.
A close call on Phobos Hell 7: was a little too greedy for experience and was faced with a mass of archviles, mancubi, barons of hell, cacodemons, and revenants. Even after pasting them with 5 BFG shots and consuming 3 large medpacks - I had to retreat with a homing phase device.
Again I didn't use pistols against Cyberdemon...I probably could have, but whatever, I killed him just the same.
I took a lot fewer turns than my UV win; I'm getting more comfortable playing at high difficulty levels now. Of course part of the reason for the high number of turns in the UV win was because I kept running back and forth in the spider's lair waiting for the Arachnotrons to one by one randomly teleport in front of me at the side of the level.
Oh - and respawning Anarchnotrons supplied a ton of Power Cells.

Seeing all those medpacks in your inventory - you're a lot like me, saving them up and dying with them rather than using them wisely.
But I've started to force myself to use them much more liberally, especially if I have more than 5, and my survival rates have gone up immensely.

The Blaster is hands-down my favorite Unique - wish I could have it every time! Dual-gunning with the Beretta actually turned out LESS useful than expected - using the Blaster alone was better than pairing it with the Beretta in single-shot mode, and on any of the multiple-shot modes, it went through ammo way too quickly and wasn't accurate enough - I eventually abandoned the thing after running out of ammo, despite having over 800 rounds at one point. I used 3 phase devices in the vaults and still didn't get to enter the middle...and there was a Unique there. There was a Unique in the lava pits too, but my envirosuit ran out before I even got halfway across and I had to abandon my pursuit with a homing phase device. The Nuclear Plasma Rifle is pretty useless for my playstyle - and it recharges so slowly.
The arena is too hard to tackle that early in UV, at least for me, so that greatly reduces the chance of getting a rocket launcher...so I had to skip the wall. I really love the backpack though...
I'm still curious as to whether or not son of a gun bonuses come into play when the Beretta is in multishot mode? I'm guessing it does, but even then the Blaster was better alone. I could've taken a level of Badass instead, which would have been nice to reduce the knockback from all the explosions that hit me.
3 TaN and 3 Ironman are fabulous - you can take so much more damage; a lot of situations are far less dangerous, and even if you don't have enough armor, you can still survive.
First time I seriously used Cateye (rather than Intuition). Since I went for durability first, I couldn't wait 3 levels to get the benefit of 'telepathy'. And it turns out I wouldn't gain 3 further levels in any case.
Also - I almost never run into thermonuclear bombs - and never with an invulnerability on floor 24 (although I did get the latter alone this time - first time that happened to me, made Cyberdemon a snap). Wish I could take a crack at JC.
Next up - U/Ao100! I'm going to start tackling that again. Most of the other challenge modes don't particularly interest me.

Discussion / Protip: Not sure if there's lava or acid underneath that item?
« on: February 14, 2009, 01:07 »
I figure the experienced players knew this already, but I thought I'd throw this out to those who are still frustrated by this. Use run (comma key) to try to run into the item. Run won't let you step into hazardous terrain, so if you cannot run to the spot where the item is, there's lava or acid underneath.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [H|98%|YAVP] First win on hard for me - pistols!
« on: February 14, 2009, 00:58 »
Son of a Gun's firing speed boost does not multiply like mods do, but add, which makes it even better. So 3x SoG means you only spend 40% of the usual time to fire a shot. With Dual gunner, you require 48% of the usual time to fire TWO shots.
Look at this post: http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php?topic=1814.msg14396#msg14396
I also don't prefer speed mods, but I had nothing else to choose from for the longest time. If you've got 3 damage mods already on the pistol though (happens to me once in a blue moon), throwing a few speed mods doesn't hurt.
Damage mods are rather nice, to counter enemy armor, especially. The magazine mod has turned out to be surprisingly useful, getting 8 shots off before needing to reload actually allows you to finish off enemies without needing to reload more often, which pays off a lot. It also decreases the impact of reload time as you don't need to reload as often.
Accuracy is underrated. If you're using the pistol from long range (or with intuition, especially), the chance to miss actually is nontrivial. But here taking the trait is better, as one trait level gives +2 acc, while 1 mod gives +1 acc.

« on: February 14, 2009, 00:51 »
Nice work. After hitting xp level 19 though, there's no need to kill enemies unless they're in your way - that'll save you lots of ammo. Your pistols must have hit really hard - 3 SoB AND 2 SoG? 10 damage minimum with the Anti-Freak Jackal (before enemy armor)! Not to mention your 1 Fin and 2 Rel. If you had the ammo, though, the Grammaton on full-auto (with SoG) is really something to behold. Not only do you shoot the same amount of shots as a chaingun with each pull of the trigger, you do a bit more damage, AND it takes much less time per shot.
That Necroarmor looks like it served you well. It's so much better than Baron/Gothic, as those slow you down so much.

!@#$^$%^#@#$#$%^&... If only I had done things differently (i.e. medpack -> hellstaff), or at the very least, put on that gothic armor I had been saving!I had an amazing run. The blaster early on helped me out a lot. (I always choose pistols regardless, so it was a huge boost.) For those of you who don't think much about the blaster compared to other uniques, look at its firing speed! You have the firing rate of two pistols in one weapon (and no dualgunner 20% penalty at that). And you never need to stop to reload (unless berserk), can save perhaps up to 6 inventory slots for ammo, and +1 accuracy to boot. With the blaster I could forgo dualgunner and get intuition one level earlier.
Hell staff - I didn't use it that often at first, but once I got below floor 50, it became a staple. Once I teleported into the midst of 5 mancubi though, that was almost an early death (floor 70 or so?). I tended to avoid using the unique slow armors - if I moved around in them, I'd get pegged by lots of shots. Any other armor evaporated very quickly - tough as nails was really helpful.
Whizkid - I regret taking it. But I suppose I had no idea I would come upon the missile launcher - before picking it up, I had a S3R3D1 advanced rocket launcher. Actually that made me hesitate to take the missile launcher but the accuracy (for firing with intution and hoping for a hit) and 4-clip magazine convinced me, even though my firing rate would be slower overall, and my damage and splash lower. Juggler is much better than I initially thought; it turns it it's very useful to switch between your bread and butter weapon and a rocket launcher without giving the enemy a turn.
Any time a crowd of enemies had a few arch-viles around, it was really painful. I would fire a dozen rockets into the crowd and hope that I took out the arch-vile before attempting pistol kills. There were more than enough rockets to go around though, with revenants and mancubi aplenty.
I hit xp level 19 on floor 41 - lots more floors to just slog through without any incentive to kill unless it was in my way. Nonetheless, very often enemies WERE in my way, so I had to kill most of them anyways. Ended up taking dualgunner really late as I found the Trigun. After this run I'm not that enamoured of it, actually - the 2 second reload time is a lot.
Tough as nails is very nice for survival, and paired with ironman, can really stretch your health out a long way, when medpacks or powerups are scarce.
Arena levels became very very scary, especially after floor 80. As you can see, I was killed in one (one step away from the stairs...).
Trait-wise, though, I'm mostly happy about what I picked. In hindsight I'd probably forgo 1 finesse and the whizkid, in favor of one more ironman and one reloader. Reloader mainly for rocket launcher use, but in this case it would have been useful for the trigun as well.
I don't particularly like the Nuclear weapons - especially the plasma rifle. They recharge so slowly! At least the BFG you can use it in a pinch for a big punch. I didn't find the Railgun particularly useful - rockets (or missiles) could hit multiple enemies in far more situations than the railgun could, and even when there was a line of enemies down a narrow hallway, I would need 3 railgun shots to kill a bunch of them (out of sight, using intuition). The first two levels of intuition are still useless though, but I still prefer 3 trait cost for intuition over 2 trait cost for cat's eye...
Finally, thanks to Xael for sharing your player.dat - I probably wouldn't have unlocked this even now on my own.
I actually got up to 19/2% experience - too bad all those kills after level 19 didn't contribute anything.

Requests For Features / Backpack for Ao100?
« on: February 09, 2009, 22:44 »
If there's any mode where the player could use more ammo storage, Ao100 would be it. Could we start with the backpack or somehow be able to obtain one?
