(Unless 'Shade' is a very recent character....)

Yes, she is... She was the new character introduced in Bioware's Sonic Chronicles... I felt it (as long as I was following the theme of naming my marines after Sonic characters) made sense to name the AoD&D marine after a character who made her debut appearence in an RPG...

Third: I'm afraid I don't really know the title thread reference at all, but I'll take a guess.  Maybe it's from Full Metal Jacket?

Nope, though I have now edited my opening post to hide in it a second reference to the same thing...

With those two out of the way, let's talk bad news.  I believe for one of the ranks - and I hate to say this - you are going to be forced to finish Angel of Berserk.  It's not for Major, though, so you've got a while (and if you can get to level 15 and still have a few large medpacks, there's probably a fair chance of you winning, I would think).

Doesn't matter... The last three challenge modes unlock at major anyway...

For Hell's Arena.  If at any point you're having trouble doing it without already having a chaingun, try using a combat shotgun (this may work with the standard shotgun too, although I didn't try it that way) and shooting from around the corners of the pillars.  Takes a while longer but with the shotguns' spread and the fact that they ignore accuracy (they're just less damaging farther away), it exposes you far less.

Yes, yes... I know that... I was merely noting that Hell's Arena becomes much easier if you already have a chaingun...

For The Wall, there's actually an easier way.  Shoot out either the far bottom or far top of the wall with rockets, and let the barons come to you.

Well that's the thing, I did shoot out the wall at the far top... You mean wait for the barons to come around the hole you make? That could be a problem considering all the monsters naturally gravitate towards the centre of the map and away from the edges...

About weapon grafting... What would happen if you tried to graft a unique weapon?

I'd figure it just wouldn't work, like trying to use a weapon mod on a unique... Alternatively, you could of course just make it so grafting worked for uniques as well...

This thread is going to incorporate three mortems here, all of which I just played today at the time of posting...

First off, I finally reached level 15 in Angel of Berserk and made Captain... Unfortunately, level 15 also turned out to be the level in which Knuckles (so-named for the Sonic the Hedgehog character of the same name) decided to kark it...

He didn't like it too rough.

He killed 153 out of 238 hellspawn. (64%)*
He was an Angel of Berserk!

*I began to panic around level 11 or so and, desperate to just make it to level 15 so I could make Captain and not have to put myself through this shit again, I fell back on my "I'll just run past everything" instinct...

**Lol, I die to lava with three enviropacks on my person... It really is a problem not being able to see the tile under an item....

***This was enough to advance my experience rank from Imp to Demon as well (note that I had already killed some Demons in melee in games prior, most of them AoB attempts)...

****After entering level 7 and getting the "in the state of Denmark" message and having enviropacks to burn (I had five on me at that point), I pulled the lever (only after killing everything in the room... silly sausage I am), turned on an enviropack and calmly made my way over to the stairs, pausing only to turn on another one after the first one failed.

*****I made many more attempts at AoB than is shown here, but by manually exiting after it says "you die!" but before the mortem comes up, I am able to avoid getting yet another "Knuckles, level 1 Imp Lieutenant, was killed by a former sergeant on level 2 of Phobos base" mortem...

Once that was done and dusted, I had a look at the new challenges I had unlocked and after having a look at Angel of Red Alert (quitting after deciding I couldn't be arsed, as I'm the kind of player who hates being rushed), I fired up a game of Angel of D&D on HTNR and, as others have said, it actually does seem easier than the regular game and my first playthrough was a smashing success...

Now I thought that was pretty good, but then I decided to go after my first HMP win as a step towards getting Major... I was going to give just a standard HMP game a shot, but then I figured, "if AoD&D is easier on HNTR, then it's probably easier on HMP too", so I fired up another AoD&D game, this time on HMP and no only was it too a smashing success, but I achieved my first full win since I began playing DoomRL... *There was quite literally one move separating a full win from a partial win in this run... When I got to the stairs in level 24, I had already faffed about and was worried my invincibility would run out after I dropped the nuke but before the nuke exploded. I still went though and lo and behold, my powerup holds, the nuke goes off, I survive and, as it turns out, the turn the nuke went off was the very same turn my powerup gave out. Fortunately, the powerup still counts as functional on the turn it gives out... Damn was that ever close...

**I was rather short of armour for quite some time during this run, having to make do with green armour, or even no armour at all for a number of "Phobos Hell" levels...

***Hell's Arena really isn't that difficult when you've already picked up a chaingun before you go there...

****You'll notice I accidentally missed the chained court... It did spawn and I did see the stairs to it, but ultimately I somehow got side-tracked and took the standard stairs...

*****Yea and it only took me something like four large health packs and two or three sets of armour to do it...

Well there you have it, I finally broke through the seemingly insurmountable barrier between myself and captain rank that was getting to level 15 in Angel of Berserk and am now, incredibly enough, actually finding myself having fun with this game again...

Oh see if you can figure out what this thread's title is referencing...

Hey, Pain Elementals do not respawn in DooM.
I don't think ANY monster respawns in Original Doom. They just are randomly spawned every X seconds, but I don't know of any previously killed enemies are brought back from the dead.

I believe he's refering to how Viles can't ressurect Pain Elementals in Doom...

I'll reiterate what I said in my thread, "Can someone explain to me how angel of berserk is meant to be possible?"...

Quote
Giftdropping would be so much easier if you could drop stuff in any of the nine squares around you, instead of only being able to drop it on the spot where you're standing... Maybe that could be made an option in the coming version... "d" for a regular drop as we have now and "D" for a directional drop (you'd get a "choose direction" message as you do when you press "c" whilst standing next to more than one open door or you press "f" when weilding a melee weapon)...

That way, in for example this situation...

.@# . . .
. . . . . h
. .# . . .

... I wouldn't have to come out of cover to drop something into the tile below me to attract the sargeant...

Note that the above is not an exact quote from my thread... I've edited slightly so it makes sense out of context with the rest of the thread...

I wonder what would happen if you connect a windows 95 or 98 to the internet now... It will probably be virussed like burning hell in seconds o_O

It depends on where you go on the Internet... Actually, I've seen at least a few people claim that they've used the Internet for years without any form of virus protection and have never seen a virus... I'd imagine any computer (protected or not) would be pretty safe as long as you stayed on the beaten path...

Anyway, I might try the compatibility thing at some point... However, where do you go to activate it? There's no "properties" option if you just right click on the desktop background (only "personalise"), so where do I go?

Requests For Features / Re: Weapon Mod: Tracer Shots
« on: December 17, 2008, 07:36 »
Excellent idea. Implement it as a unique AoE weapon called the flare gun that shoots shotgun shells (Or rockets? Rockets would be a bit too rare though.) and has a 1 radius splash that doesn't destroy walls or items. Does very little damage and has the special abilities of the tracer mod described above.

Its sight radius is 1 while flying and 2 when it explodes. You get a free action looking at the revealed tiles (Message: "Ah, that cleared things up a bit. -MORE-"). And then you press enter or space to make them dark again and continue with play.

OK, I reckon we have a definite winner here... I think that it should use shotgun shells (real flare guns tend to be 12 gauge anyway)... One might consider that the "low ammo useage" of the flare gun could be unbalancing, even when it does "very little damage", but when you consider how little ammo regular shotguns in the game (particularly when weilded by a skilled shotgun using player) use anyway, I doubt that could be the case... All we'd have to do then would be to figure out wether Angels of Berserk could be allowed to fire them or not (perhaps they could be allowed to, but have the flare deal no damage and only have its revealing effect)...

If you want to run DOS games, use DOSBox (google it). It emulates DOS pretty well, making possible to run games that are 15-20 years old.
As for "small windows games" and their developers, it is not their problem only. Most old drivers from XP do not work on Vista. But I am beyond the knowledge what the changes were and why M$ did that.

Err... yea... the games I'm thinking of aren't that old... I'm actually thinking more of games that came out for the PC in the late 90s and 2000 (and maybe 2001, but probably no later than that), such as Civil War Generals 2, the first Zoombinis game (which I occasionally play for nostalgic reasons), Axis & Allies (that is, the late 90s PC adaptation of the board game of the same name, not the 2004 RTS), Star Trek: Starfleet Command I and II and the first two Homeworld titles (I consider Cataclysm a seperate game)... I know I could probably get all these games to work on Vista by messing around with Vista's ability to emulate earlier versions of Windows and so on, but why bother when I can just leave the room, walk down a short corridor, entre another room and find a completely original (except for the keyboard and mouse, but we do still have the original keyboard and mouse and they work), fully functional Windows 98, plugged in, ready to be booted up and soon to celebrate a decade of loyal (and very reliable compared to the other computers) service (we bought it in '99)...

By the way, can any of you suggest ways for keeping the 98 in good shape? It doesn't access the Internet (and hasn't done so in quite a number of years), though I have transfered DoomRL, WinTrek and an earlier version of Battleships Forever (which didn't work) to it from my other computers... There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with its operation or its software... Hasn't been defragged in years though (I just never think of defragging it for some reason) and now that I've thought of defragging it I can't help but wonder if it's a bad idea, given how long it's been since its last one...

On the hardware front, all of it (again, except for the keyboard and mouse) is completely original, the only problem we can decern being that the floppy drive's door broke a while ago and we had to remove it... We had to take the cover off to get sufficent access to the floppy drive to get the door off (as it was it was stuck on a diagonal and you couldn't get a floppy disk inside the drive) and while we were there we vaccumed up the nine years worth of dust that had settled on the bottom of the case and had a go at clearing the dust from the fan area as well... Right now the CPU is sitting on a clever little adjustable plastic stand that keeps it raised up off the floor...

So, yea that about covers it... What would you suggest, if anything?

I run. A LOT. Therefore, I get very pissed off when my character gets hit by something 50 times, but still keeps running. Could you have it so that your character stops when hit? It would save me a lot of frustration, and keyboards.

It's your own stupid fault for holding the movement keys down...

116
Also cyberdemon is easier using the DBS and shottyman than he is using the BFG. You move when he fires (Running bonus + Strafe bonus = He always misses) and fire when he reloads. The BFG can also do this, but you'll eventually need to stand still and reload, at which point he will peg you with one rocket.

What exactly is the base dodge bonus and how much does going diagonally add to it? I know running mode adds +20% and HR adds +10%, but it'd be nice to know what the underlying chance to dodge is...

The Good Samaritan:

Rather than following the traditional pattern of pistols being a quick-shooting dinky peashooter except for the Trigun, this gun is mean.  4 shots limit the clip an awful lot, but it does a TON of damage up front (Thinking 2d10 or 2d12).  Balancing off the high damage of the pistol is the low clip, the slow firing rate, and the slow reload time compared to other guns.

Actually, we already have four pistol uniques...

I tried to keep those two traits as balanced as possible.  And yes, I stole the quotes DIRECTLY from the Doom Comic, with all of its wonderfulness.

That's... pretty much what the quotes for all the current traits do anyway...

Tri-Barrel Shotgun: (This does exist in reality, I think.)  Very much a unique weapon.  Instead of having x3 modifier, it has a nicely increased x4 or x5 modifier.  However, it also takes 1.5x the time to reload as the regular Double Shotgun.

Yawn much?

Mining Blast Cannon: (Unique Weapon.)  Uses Energy Cells, when fired, sends a short-ranged yet extremely powerful energy shockwave in kind of this pattern.  The rationale I used for this kind of weapon to be in a UAC base is simple: They had to have some kind of effective mining operation going on, or else they'd be completely helpless without transports.

You might be able to make that into a kind of energy cell based shotgun... In fact, you'd pretty much have to or else people who might use it would just use the double shotgun (much better range) to do the same job...

The Shovel: (Unique Weapon) Oh, now you'll really get going.  This weapon hits for less damage than the chainsaw, more than the Combat Knife, but when you hit with it, the enemy is stunned for 2 turns.  I know of nothing that wouldn't be stunned by being smacked on the head with a shovel.  Could inspire "Angel of Shovel" challenge, where you must beat the game ONLY using a shovel and a Nuke at the end.

I suppose it might make AoB a little easier... Stun an enemy them swap to your main melee weapon and pulverise him... Keep in mind, however, that even moving one space is technically ten turns (there are ten turns to a second)...

Flamethrower: (Unique or not, Developer's Choice.)  To make the flamethrower easier, I hope, to code, it will have a range of 5 squares, and go in a straight line.  Each shot with the flamethrower hits for the same amount of damage as Lava, and it takes Energy Cells to operate.  It fires very quickly, obviously, since it's a continuous stream.  Eats cells like candy.

I think that'd be pretty easy to code... Just use the shotgun formula and give it a spread of 5x1 with no damage reduction over range... For graphical effects, just use the same ones as are used for rocket and barrel explosions currently... I certainly think it should be unique and maybe it should have a secondary reload (press "R", as you currently do to reload both pistols when you have dualgunner or to switch to semi-auto or atuo on the Cleric Beretta) where it does less damage but spreads over a wider area (5x3 maybe)...

Mancubus Arm: (Unique) Fires 3 Mancubus Fireballs, with their respective advantages and disadvantages.  Eats rockets like candy.

Not useful enough to warrant the aforementioned eating of rockets IMO...

Requests For Features / Re: Levers!

There's already levels that flood only one room, the one you're standing in, just FYI.

Voyeurism is undoomish, Tom.
XD
Took me a while to figure it out... :)

Umm... I must be missing something... :|

Anyway, in the past I suggested that there would be 2-3 different classes of levers, each with different beneficial, neutral and dangerous effects. That way you could gamble safely on lower tier levers even without ranks in Intuition. Right now levers are most often not worthwhile past the early stages of the game, which wastes them as a feature.

*Nods* I think this'd be a good idea... :)
