Nightmare! / Re: [N!|AoLT|47%|YAVP]
« on: January 23, 2008, 18:08 »
Is this the first post-0.9.8.5 Nightmare win without a challenge that made it easier than normal nightmare mode? (AoH, AoPm, etc.)

Either way great going!

 12 of those were killed.
2 of those were killed by something unknown.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I've never really bothered with challenge games before. I tried AoB and AoMr a few times back in 0.9.8.5, but that's about it. The new challenges look like fun though, so I thought I'd see if I can't unlock some of them.

This was my second attempt at AoI. My first one failed on Level 15, because I stupidly tried taking on the City of Skulls. This round, I didn't do any challenges that were harder than normal levels, and it payed off by giving me exactly zero challenge throughout the game. I also used the chain weapon line instead of the shotgun line, since the chain weapon series is much better no matter how much I love the style of the SGs.

I never dipped below 40% health in the entire game, excepting for a level 15, in which I ran into a seemingly invincible Baron of Hell- Normally, they die in 2 or 3 bursts of a chaingun with SoaB3 (As opposed to 5 or 6 shots at close range from a Double Shotgun with Shottyman. >_>) But this one kept soaking up damage like nothing. I emptied an entire chaingun- 10 bursts- into the fucker, and he just kept on firing plasma balls at me as if I was throwing rice. After I reloaded the chaingun and desperately fired another 3 or 4 bursts, he finally keeled over with myself having gone from 100% health to 22%. Examining his dropped objects revealed the cause of the phenomenon: "Gothic Armor [7/7] (139%)". Bitch used up 61% of my armor! >:-[

After that, I grabbed a large medpack that was 5 spaces away from where we were fighting, and put the gothic armor in my backpack before continuing on my way. After that I had absolutely no problems, and was able to patch up the armor by taking it out whenever I saw an armor shard. By level 19, I had it back on 200% and put it on. That thing is just unfair- I got in a fight with an Arch-Vile, and his fire attack was doing no more than ~5% damage at a time- and I had 60HP. The Cyberdemon was really easy as always, I took it out in 4 shots of the BFG9000.

The sheer lack of difficulty surprise me in this challenge, as I expected having noon-demand medpacks would make this really difficult and intense. Definitely not the case however. IMO, even without the Gothic Armor, AoI on Medium in this version is significantly easier than non-challange Easy difficulty in 0.9.8.5 (Which is the only other version I'm willing to play, since 0.9.8.7 was unbearably glitchy and .8 was ridiculously unbalanced.) Kornel might want to look into that.

At any rate, I'm probably try for AoB or AoMr before doing AoLt for the level-up. (Angel of Darkness? What Angel of Darkness?)

Requests For Features / Re: Unique monsters and bosses
« on: January 21, 2008, 22:37 »
What about a system to generate random unique monsters (similar to diablo 2 or hell gate) where the monsters are based off common monsters but given more hp and some random traits?

Some monster trait ideas
Charged - After you hit this monster it releases a few plasma shots in random directions.
Hyper - Moves and attacks faster.
Mighty - Melee attacks hit harder.
Retrofitted - Comes equipped with two random standard weapons that it can fire at the same time.
Phased - Can move through walls and halves all damage taken.
Unstable - Explodes violently when killed.
Teleporter - Can teleport.  What a surprise.
Cursed - When hit with a weapon the attacker takes a small amount of damage.
Hardy - Improved armor resistance and more hp.
Spawner - Splits into ordinary copies of itself when it dies.
Vampiric - Drains health with non-weapon attacks.
Regrowth - Regenerates hp slowly.

I think these are definitely fitting for the lower levels of Angel of 100, but not for the main game.

As for boss monsters, fuck yes to Spider mastermind but I don't really like the others.

Discussion / Re: Spoiler/Wiki Random Artifact List?
« on: January 21, 2008, 16:57 »
Are Planeshift Boots a special item? I found those, but I didn't see a special message in the level I got them, and they didn't seem to do anything special.

For future reference, instead of putting "HNTR" in the title, put the difficulty marking that corresponds to the difficulty, as shown in the highscores. (E/M/H/U/N!)

Requests For Features / Re: Revenant and Doom 3 monsters.
« on: January 18, 2008, 22:22 »
1)First one is the Revenant - the only original monster (sans Spider Mastermind, which is a boss-type monster and thus in completly diffrent league) that still havn't made it to the game.

You're forgetting Baphomet =p

Then again, I suppose Endguy already covers that post, seeing as he spawns monsters and otherwise sits there waiting for you to kill him.

Massive spoilers, for both DoomRL ad Doom 2:

Odd, it seems that a disproportionate number of crashes seem to happen on the Chained Court.

Anyway, enjoy I guess.

You spent all that time spelling out that word, but then you randomly put one of the letters in lowercase while the rest are uppercase!

Now you have to do the challenge all over again to fix that!

Whatever did happen to the live feed anyway? I liked looking through it to see what was coming up for the new releases.

Maybe Kornel should add some additional surprises for AoPa players on Nightmare!. Like no powerups. :-P

Anyway, nice.

Kornel should stop adding stuff already, fix all the bugs and call it finished.

Not until we have Spider Mastermind.
This.

Although aside from SM and possibly rebalancing/new challenges I agree with Karry that that project should be starting to get wrapped up at this point.

Requests For Features / Re: Get experience by doing
« on: January 17, 2008, 18:06 »
Doesn't fit well with DoomRL at all, but could be a good idea for GenRogue.

The main benefit of traits is that each of them gives an "almost visible" change, that is instant gratification. Instant gratification is fun. Slow progress of invisible stats is not fun. At least that's my opinion, but I'd like to hear others.
CIVIL WAR: I'm with Kornel!
What are you talking about? Unless you didn't catch Potman's sarcasm.

Requests For Features / Re: A coffeebreak game
« on: January 17, 2008, 18:03 »
An average game, for me, lasts maybe five minutes - up to half hours if I manage to beat the game. I'd qualify it a coffeebreak game all right.

Really? My wins always take upwards of 2 hours.

It's certainly a coffeebreak game compared to...well, pretty much every non-Kornel Roguelike in existance. I mean, the average first ascention on NetHack is something like 25 hours, and other titles like Angband take much, much longer than that.

However, I definitely see where you're coming from. You should try checking out Berserk!, that game is VERY fast-paced and short. It makes DoomRL seem like...something that takes a large amount of time.

I generally play Berserk! when I just want to kill 5 or 10 minutes between classes or whatever, and DoomRL when I can dedicate at least half an hour to it.

Pre-0.9.9 / [M|91%|YAVP] First win of the new version!
« on: January 17, 2008, 17:53 »
lol, late to the party.

I've unfortunately been really busy lately, and so haven't really had a chance to play video games nearly as much as I'd like. This game was actually played over the course of four days, with about half an hour a day.

On the other hand, I really, really like what I've seen so far in this version. I haven't actually played much DoomRL at all since 0.9.8.5, because .7 kept crashing and erasing my data which caused me to quit playing after the third reset, and I got so annoyed by chain weapons in  .8B that I quit playing after I won one game with them.

In .9, though, all of Kornel's ideas that he's implemented starting with .7 seem to have really come full circle, and massive amount of cool new stuff since .5 is really sweet. The game also is balanced enough now that I can really enjoy it and enjoy all the new stuff so, I can see myself dumping a lot of time into this version when I get a chance to do so.

Massive props to Kornel for this, you've done a great job.

The difficulty (or lack thereof) is something a lot of people have noted. Maybe limiting Son of a Gun to 2 levels would help?
