Title: The NEW Horrible Ideas Thread
Post by: raekuul on February 08, 2013, 05:27
Not just for DoomRL ideas anymore...

So I had a funny idea for a Horrible Ideas Thread post, but then I came by and saw that the Horrible Ideas Thread had been locked. Which is a shame, because the HIT was probably the funniest thing on this site other than some of the mortems. So then I figured "Why not make a new one? One to cover all the Chaosforge roguelikes, not just DoomRL!"

So here we are, with the first Horrible Idea of 2013:

DoomRL - Angel of Chaos and Archangel of Discord.
One of the more bizarre experiments got loose. Nothing makes sense anymore.
Even though it had been suggested over a million times, Angel of Chaos takes the standard Roguelike formula of not automatically knowing what the letters represent and applies it to the items - basically, it randomly assigns a new color and letter to each major category of item: new icons for melee weapons, guns, boots, armors, medpacks, and powerups; new colors for the individual variations, exotics, and uniques. Is that purple 3 a pistol or a blue armor?

Archangel of Discord is that but with the enemies included. Is that blue c on level 7 a demon or a baron?

Is this blue c a demon or a chiangun? ;)

Angel of Reverse:  You start with character level 10  (maybe higher?)  and choose all your traits at the beginning.  Then, every time you level up, you instead *lose* a level and choose which trait you lose!  So, the more kills you get, the harder the game gets.  Diamond badge would be playing UV with 100% kills.  :P

I actually like this idea lol.

So during fight with Spidey / JC you would have minus few levels? :P

...Horrible Ideas Thread had been locked...
Eh, it timed out.  I'm not going to unlock it... let's use this one instead.

I was thinking it would just bottom out at level 1, but now that you mention it...  hmm...  Maybe it could keep deducting traits!  Go into minus levels of Ironman to lose 10 more max hp!  Or Finesse to slow down your rate of fire, or Brute to reduce your melee damage and chance to hit even further!  Losing more Intuition could reduce your sight radius.  Losing more badass would make your health decay down to 50% and increase your knockback.  Losing more Whizkid would disable any modding or assemblies.

2Dev would grab a damageless run in a week ;).

I don't think so, losing a Hellrunner past-bottom and losing WK2 before assembling at least an AA/A boots will break his and many people's strategy. Also, if the losses past level 1 will be random, losing a HR/Bad will net you a dead doomguy pretty quick, losing Fin/EE will delay the inevitable, losing Rel - uh oh, etc etc. Losing Bru/Ber, however, won't impact a ranged-only character. If the losses won't be random, it'll come to carefully using losses points to lose only those traits you can afford. Say, if you're out of pistols, you're free to drop all 5 levels of SoG in sequence and not suffer in the slightest. The former option sounds more challenging, but you will be subject to getting screwed by an unlucky stat loss, say you're a scout, you lose Int, lowering your sight range - welcome constant radarshooting, bam, you've lost HR, you move, bam there was an archvile or a mancubus, you suffer double blast, you're dead. Yes it's roguelikes, but it sounds like playing against an already BORED Xom (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Xom).

Angel of Boredom - like Ao100 (yes, I like Ao100), but without exotics and uniques, so you can't rely on them.
Angel of Extreme Boredom - same as above, but all levels are of Normal layout, and number of monster of particular type is proportional to their weighted chance for given level (i.e. not random).
Angel of Ultimate Boredom - all levels are exactly the same, up to monster and item placement. Monster stats are modified by deepness (i.e. there will be arch-viles on first level, but with health of 10 and attack of 5)

Adamantine Boots
;
[4/4]
Provides feet 80% acid resistance and feet 50% fire resistance
Silently causes an "alarm" effect (meaning the monsters basically are tracking you) on all levels when worn
Cursed

Archangel of impatience

You have to do everything right now
-Wait command disabled.
-Walking over items makes you use them, same goes for powerups.
-Same applies to levers
-You will never be in cautious state, if you can run, you will run.
-Any action longer than 1 second is disabled because it bores your character.
-No saving. That's boring.

Why is this on the Horrible ideas thread? This is actually a pretty decent Archangel, lol.

Archangel of Over 9000.
Archangel of Pacman: You can only finish the game in the same way you can beat Pacman. Note: we're talking about a 16-bit integer here. >.>

Doesn't pacman only have 256 boards?

How about Angel of Tetris? Now that one truly never ends...

Yea cause pacman stored the level on only a short 8-bit integer. In a modern program like DoomRL it would be a liiittle more. :P

Yeah just 8 orders of magnitude.  It's only a little bit more.

A difference between one cent and one million dollars.  That's all.

What would DoomRL's split screen level look like? Should be worth the epic journey to find out...

Angel of Silence - all ingame sounds are disabled.

Edit: Int2 should probably also be disabled, or maybe just Int as a whole, to prevent Cateye.

Inspired by this post. (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,6504.msg56806.html#msg56806)  A new category of medals: fails.  Medals would include ones for...

Dying on the last level of Angel of 100.   (or AAo666)

Dying to a Former Human's melee attack.

Setting a nuke while invulnerable and having the invulnerability wear off just before the nuke explodes.

Using a large med pack when at full health and still cautious status.

Having a phase device take you right next to a pack of large monsters.

Getting nearly 100% kills and missing it by one enemy.

Dying without getting a single kill.

Having regenerating armour (such as Tactical Armour) get destroyed.

Dropping an exotic item on an occupied square and having it fall into lava.

Failing to get a single kill during the duration of a berserk pack and having the berserk run out just as you're running up to an enemy.

The current Iron Skull medal could be a natural contender too.  :)

Anyone who wants to add suggestions to this list is welcome to do so.  I might add more if I think of any.  :)

EDIT:  Ooh, another one:  Dying while standing on a Supercharge or Megasphere.  (Or invulnerability or berserk pack, for that matter)  :)

More possible fail medals:

1. Using a homing phase device in a maze level when the stairs are in plain view

2. Getting killed with full health/boosted because you have armor on that grants negative resist to a damage type...and of course, you were killed from attacks of that damage type

3. FTL: Faster than Light had an achievement that involved missing a certain number of times in a row after having fully upgraded some aspects of your vessel...Perhaps something similar? Maybe have EE3 at a requirement too.

4. And inspired by the previous idea: Have a high dodge rate (maybe 50%, possible with HR3 and Tactical Armor, that's at least 50%, and maybe even have Dodgemaster), and then get hit a few times in a row despite attempts to dodge

5. Using two consecutive phase devices and didn't move a combined 10 tiles in any direction

6. Save at least 25 times outside of an Ao100 or ArchAo666 challenge (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,6475.msg56549.html#msg56549)
(No offense to GinDiamond, seriously, but hey if this goes through, you might be making history :D )

7. Changing tactics when having both pieces of the Gothic set equipped (Does that even do anything for your evasion chances?)

8. Spend a turn dual/full reloading...and die before you can perform any other actions

9. Clearing Archangel of Pacifism with 2 kills! :D

10. Die after flooding a floor with acid/lava.

11. Iron Skull medal.

How about making 100 failed attempts to pick up the Dragonslayer in one game.  Then everyone would have it.  :P

Rather hard to fail when you're the one who coded how to succeed =P

Then again, you could easily do so intentionally - you know what works, so just do anything at all else. It's really easy, I've managed it lots of times.

I think you're misreading the post: he says he's really good at failing to pick up DS. He's no match for me, though.

... although kinda impossible to get this through Phobos Base Entry. Those formers aren't exactly prone to suicide and one will always stay alive.

I can pretend that getting both pieces of the Inquisitor's Set before Cyberdemon is easier than hoping to get another nuke.

Trigun. Trigun is the answer to everything. (And invuln globes.)

DiabloRL now supports pistols, shotguns, chainguns, rocket launchers, plasma rifles and BFGs, but you can't find any ammunition for them other than what is in the weapon when you pick up.  From killing former commandos who spawn in the game.

And if any bipedal-two-armed being picks it up, they can use their resurrection abilities to regenerate the ammunition involved to fire the damn thing at you.
