It becomes a lot easier once you have the chainsaw. The hardest part is surviving to the Chained Court.

2 questions:

1) How did you get Angelic Armor without any melee training?
2) What the hell are 2 BFG's good for? ;P

I do not think I understand what you are getting at with these questions. Why would you need melee training to get the Angelic Armor? The easiest way to get the Angelic Armor is to enter the Mortuary with a BFG and a lot of cells, and a backup weapon for when you need to kill a single enemy without wasting cells; and then you use mostly BFG fire to clear out the level.

A BFG holds more cells than an ordinary inventory slot, so you can use a spare BFG to store cells. Also, in a situation where you expect to be firing the BFG over and over again, you can make both your primary and secondary weapons BFGs, so that when your first BFG runs out of cells, you can swap weapons and continue firing; swapping weapons takes less time than reloading a BFG. This is useful when you are about to enter the Mortuary or the Phobos Arena, for instance.

Destroying 100.000 barrels, use 3.000 levers, and other requirements not related with KILLING: If you haven't realized, all the rank requirements are set around killing different amounts of different kinds of enemies, in some way or another, so these requirements don't fit.

Yes, the point is that they don't fit! So getting to a new rank level and seeing "destroy 100,000 barrels" as a requirement for the next level is surprising and maybe even rather funny.

Kill 7 enemies with one shot: Oh, too easy! Even I can kill 7 enemies in a single shot! By the time I reach the level with the Lost Soul rush, I already have gotten the first BFG9K.

I had forgotten about the BFG. Maybe that should read "Kill 7 enemies with one non-BFG shot," or something like that. I was thinking about the difficulty of killing large number of enemies with a single shotgun or rocket launcher shot.

Kill 1 Baron with your fists, kill 1 arch-vile with the combat knife, kill Cybie with the chainsaw: Now we're talking. Although, let me tell you, someone who has managed to kill the Angel of Death in the unholy cathedral will already have enough training to attain these challenges more or less easily. The Angel has a shit-ton of HP, more than Cybie, AND you have to take him out in melee in order to retrieve the Spear of Destiny. Therefore, we need some flavour of this requirement that proves to be a challenge, but still is out of the threshold of absurdity.

"Killing Cyberdemon with chainsaw," for example, asks the player to not only keep the chainsaw after getting the Spear of Destiny, something that players ordinarily wouldn't do, instead filling up their inventory with med packs and phase devices; it also requires the player to face the Cyberdemon WITHOUT using the Spear of Destiny, which is a significant thing to be asked to do, since the Spear is an excellent weapon and facing the Cyberdemon with a lesser weapon entails some real risk of getting killed at the end of the game, when you could have won easily (by using the Spear).

Savescumming and various other ways of cheating can be pretty important for playtesting the game and making sure everything works properly, but part of the point of a roguelike is that the balance and pace of the game is very particular and carefully designed; in my experience, any degree of cheating throws off the balance and pace, and makes the game completely unfun (for me, at least).

How about some weirder, sillier requirements along the way?

* Destroy 100,000 barrels.
* Kill 1 Baron...with your fists.
* Kill 1 Archvile...with the combat knife.
* Kill 1 Cyberdemon...with the chainsaw.
* Kill 7 enemies with one shot.
* Use 3,000 levers.
* Reach level 19 in 10 games.
* Reach level 20.

...and so on.

And, especially now that accuracy has been made more important, EE is amazingly useful. What's the point of all the SoBs in the world if you never hit? Unless you're going entirely shotgun, I suppose.

For a chaingun character, I think it's a matter of taste whether you take 2 levels or 3 levels of EE. Anything less than 2 levels of EE will be a problem, though.

With 3 levels of Son of a Bitch, at least 2 levels of Eagle Eye, a few levels of Finesse and a plasma gun with 3 damage mods--in other words, a character kitted out to use rapidfire weapons--you can kill the Cyberdemon about as easily as with a BFG.

Check out rec.games.roguelike.development , there might be some mention of Game Maker there.

I am not sure, though, that it makes sense to use something like Game Maker to write a roguelike; if you don't use Game Maker, the variants on the curses library (which has versions usable in C++, Java, Common Lisp, Javascript, Python, Ruby, ...) will handle screen output functions, leaving you to program the actual game mechanics, and I think this is probably preferable to the slowness, hard-coded limitations, and sometimes unpredictable behavior that can come from using someone else's generic game-making system for your roguelike.

I agree that a global high score list would be a fun idea, players who didn't like it could ignore it or not submit scores to it. It would take a little work to keep it from being very easy to cheat at, though, by manipulating save files or variables in local memory; the only fair way to do it might be to keep everything on a remote server, and have players telnet in to play, like how Crawl runs on crawl.akrasiac.org.

I do not think your math is quite right; if each large medpack effectively nets you one hit against the Angel (assuming it gives you two turns, one to attack, one to use the next large medpack), and the chainsaw does 13 damage per hit (14 average base damage + 9 Brute damage - 10 due to the Angel's armor), 20 large medpacks is enough to do 260 damage and kill the Angel. That's a lot of assumptions, though--but the biggest and most questionable assumption is the claim that "If (Killing the boss of UD is impossible without being berserk) AND (Being berserk during the fight requries luck, and that amount of luck is rediculously high) is true THEN UD is too difficult." I do not think it is true that the Unholy Cathedral is too difficult; it is meant to be unplayable for all but very strong melee characters, and a challenge even for them. The reward is tremendous for a melee character that finishes it, but no character has to go to the Cathedral to finish the game.

I would enjoy seeing an alternate way to beat the Cathedral than just running in and beating the Angel to death while berserk, like some kind of hidden "back door" to the Cathedral that would put you on a platform where you could shoot across some chasm at the Angel without actually being in the Cathedral; but this would only fit in a version of DoomRL much more like Crawl, with complicated interlocking dungeon branches. It wouldn't make much sense in DoomRL as it is.

DoomRL is balanced so perfectly.
Useless shotguns ?
Being able to miss 6 times in a row at point-blank range, whereas sergeants always hit ?
Dying on level 2 because you just "happen" to appear in the middle of lost souls pack ?

Doesnt seem that balanced to me. Not yet, anyway.

You are complaining that shotguns are "useless" and then complaining that shotguns, carried by sergeants (and permitting them to always hit), are too good?

I was playing in the crawl.akrasiac.org Crawl tournament all through August!
I should try akrasiac again. Last time, it ran too slowly.
How'd you do?

Better than I expected--won the game, which I hadn't done before, and took 38th place in the tournament, overall.

The special reload of Trigun is "Angel Arm," which nukes the level. It's on the DoomRL wiki.
