Requests For Features / Whizkid isn't consistently practical
« on: April 07, 2010, 12:54 »
Check my discussion in my latest mortem to see most of my points:

http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2988.msg25587.html#new

In short, in a run which I wanted to experiment with whizkid, I never even got the chance because I never got enough mods to sanely consider choosing it upon each level up.

Now, I don't think Whizkid is a bad trait. It's a good trait, in theory. It's just that, in practice, you're at the mercy of the RNG due to mods being rare enough that you can't get enough of them to justify Whizkid's existence.

What I mean is: Whizkid has trouble standing up by itself. Traits like badass and dodgemaster are good traits in-and-of themselves, while whizkid requires that you have enough mods to justify it's existence, which is only seldomly the case. Ammochain (which has whizkid as a prerequisite) helps this a tiny bit, as one can sanely overspecialize with a tricked out plasma rifle and just neglect other weapons entirely, but if this is not the case, then it's a alot tougher to consider whizkid as being a real good choice in one's planned trait progression.

So, what I'm suggesting is any number of things:

1) That mods be made more plentiful in RNG generation of a level.
2) That whizkid be made more accessible in the trait list. As it being a third level trait means you have to consciously plan to get it, and then hope to god you get enough mods to justify it's existence.
3) That modding be altered in some other way that I haven't thought of.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This was a really good run. I got more more exotics than I normally do, and I was able to use them to great effect. Completed Mortuary, something I'm not able to do very often, which was alot of fun. I like that there's two guaranteed exotics in there, but it's unfortunate that the game is almost done by the time you get them, so you can't get their maximum usefulness.

I usually employ an extremely tanky build with TaN and ironman maxed out, complemented with some EE and Intuition for good measure. However, I thought I'd go a slightly different path today, the path of whizkid. Picking up some finesse and juggler, I position myself with only needing one level to get whizkid. I put it off though, thinking "Oh, I'll wait until I pick up some mod packs, and THEN I'll get whizkid so I don't go wasting a level on something that isn't immediately useful", and so I progress along my usual tanky build. Levels upon levels pass, and I can't find ANY mod packs. It's only until levels 24 and 25 that I find a couple, but by that time I HARDLY care.

So, in short, I never get whizkid because I never deem it useful. So while whizkid might be a good trait in theory, in practice it seems that it enjoys very little practical use due to the component that it's based around, the mod packs, are too rare to warrant building a strategy around. Now, I'm something of an experienced player, and if memory serves this pattern isn't exclusive to this run, and so I take this assumption to be accurate.

Does anyone else have any imput on the matter?

0.9.9.1 / [H|77%|YAVP] Lotsa badges in the new version!
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:31 »
As none of you might know, I'm a college student has a very limited amount of free time. However, I still feel that it's worthwhile to spend some of this valuable free time in order to try out the new Doomrl version. This was nice, and I completed a personal goal of mine to get enough badges in a single run to unlock challenge mode. To give an opinion of the new version, I like exotics. I especially like the fact that I get the missile launcher for completing the wall, WAY more useful than an advanced rocket launcher. However, I somewhat doubt the exotics. I doubt them because in their transition from uniques to exotics, they've lost the level feeling. This forces me to look all over every level if I want to see if there is one, while with a unique, I don't need to bother if I didn't get a level feeling. I think there should be SOME form of level feeling in order to see if their is one.

This is very odd. I have the latest version of Doomrl on a flashdrive which I carry around, and I had no problem playing before, but now it refuses to start. It does show some sort of error briefly before closing, but I don't know what it means:

Could anyone help me out?

Bug Reports / Music doesn't play when loading a saved game
« on: February 22, 2010, 01:47 »
Normally, I never save my game, if only out of the fear that people might accuse me of savescumming, which is something I'd never do. However, the other day I was in a position where I HAD to save and leave my computer, which I did.

When I came back and started my game back up though, the music wouldn't play. The monster sounds and the gun shots could still be heard, but the music was completely gone, and I was left in an eerie silence. I progressed through the game normally, and nothing else was wrong, but the music never came back.

After beating that game, I started a new game, and the music came back just alright. So I'm guessing that there's something wrong with the save feature that accidentally disables the music.

--------------------------------------------------------------

God! That was close. Like, REALLY CLOSE! As you can see, I was almost dead there when I finished Cybie with my last resort blast from my BFG.

You see, I had been gradually been bled dry of my resources through the last few levels of hell. The severity of the monster spawns NECESSITATED that they be taken out with extreme prejudice, and that lead to me being a little low on plasma cells, and a few mishaps drained me of my health packs.

Really, to let you know, Ultraviolence requires a different strategy than the other modes. You'll see I have quite a few different weapons, and an extra plasma rifle. This was so that I could switch strategies on the fly, while maintaining heavy firepower. I kept the rocket launcher to reshape the levels and create VITAL shortcuts, but I never used it for offensive purposes, as it's too slow. I also kept the combat shotty with a single stack of ammo for scouting purposes, and trust me, scouting is EXTREMELY important when theres the chance of you running into a pack of revenants that instakill you in a single turn. Getting the BFG was a must, because even though they consume plasma like nobody's business, you won't see anything else chew through the hoards of high level monsters like this baby can, and trust me, you WILL need to chew through them to get to the exit eventually. Don't be hesitant to use it either, while the BFG is expensive to use, you'll see that there's some groups of monsters which are simply too big to dispose of in any other way, and learning when it's best to whip it out WILL save your life.

One thing you HAVE to learn is that you should NOT hoard your plasma weaponry, thinking you can save it for a better day. No, you have to discard the impulse to save your best stuff, because that plasma was made to kill monsters, and that's what you should use it for. In fact, ALWAYS keep a plasma rifle as your secondary in case you accidentally find yourself in an uncomfortable position that only gratuitous amounts of violence applied in a very short time-frame can solve. Not kidding, you never know when you will need to kick alot of ass at a moment's notice, so keep your ass-kicker on hand.

Now, I'm not saying to use the plasma rifle all the time, no, because even though plasma cells are made abundant very early on, you should only seriously consider using them on Barons and up. So don't be stingy, health is MUCH more important than plasma cells.

I'm glad I found a good set of uniques, the phaseshift boots gave me some free speed (although it could have been acquired by agility modding a regular pair of boots), the advtech mod gave me an advanced plasma rifle, and the onyx armor helped alot against Cybie, who can normally chew through even really awesome armor like nothing.

My build is a little unusual as it doesn't have a master trait. However, thinking practically, I realized that NO master trait was worth the hardship of bending over backwards for in these conditions, not even Ammochain, especially with how early some monsters would spawn. You'd be facing Hell Knights at level 3, so I decided that every bullet counts, and I got 2 levels of Eagle Eye first, which allowed me to use RUN while holding a rapidfire weapon and maintain an edge of accuracy whlie boosting my evasion and speed. Then I went for two levels of Tough as Nails, and then badass, and then another TaN. Badass is simply awesome, a must have, but more importantly, TaN is important because every level of it makes it seem like you're wearing a higher level of permanent, indestructible armor, which is invaluable. Then I got three levels of Son of a Bitch in a row, as that trait allows me to finish off monsters much more quickly, and with fewer bullets, so I'm essentially conserving both ammo and health with it. After that, I went for finesse, and then juggler, because being able to instantly switch between your weapons is a BIG deal when a single turn can spell life or death. If I hadn't gotten juggler, then Cybie might have been able to finish me off. Then, lastly, I got a level of hellrunner, but in retrospect, maybe I should've gotten Ironman instead.

Also, one trick that I finally got to exploit in this run was the free Mortuary heal. Basically, I got to the stairs to the Mortuary in fairly bad shape, and immediately thought "Yeah, I won't survive if head down there..." and then I looked in my inventory, and remembered that I had a homing phase device. With this in mind, I headed down into it, grabbed some free armor and health, homing phased to the exit and skidaddled out of there!

It was tough, it required patience, planning, and ALOT of firepower, but I beat Ultraviolence! This was definitely the hardest thing I've done yet, as even doing Angel of 100 wasn't this hard. Now, let's see if I can do Nightmare!

7
So I was thinking, plasma guns have an alternate reload that destroys the weapon for a single powerful attack. Fairly useful if you have a group of enemies that you need dead RIGHT NOW... but I was wondering, how come the chaingun doesn't have anything similar?

My suggestion: give the chaingun an alternate reload which can only be used when it has a full clip. This will cause the chaingun to do a 'hot fire', where it will fire it's entire clip of 40 shells with a -2 or -3 to hit in say a couple seconds, and then the chaingun melts and becomes useless.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have yet to use the plasma gun alternate fire for anything, inspite of it's potential usefulness. It just doesn't seem practical to me, and the payoff isn't proportional to risk and sacrifice. Maybe that could be buffed as well, somehow?

It'll be fun, and I'll rack up some kills too", and what transpires is me scoring ANOTHER full win! With the Trigun no less, flippin' sweet.

I didn't use the missile launcher, as I was sure that I was just gonna melee everything, but I learned to pick up Uniques just so they count in the stats screen.

Anyway, I GLADLY abandoned my melee run when I found the Trigun. It's like a rule or something, that you can't find the Trigun and then NOT use it. I mean, come on! Free, fast nukes! Only cast 5 maxHP! Fortunately for me, I found TWO invincibility globes on floor 23 right next to the stairs. I used that fortune to angel arm nuke floors 24, 25, and 26 in a row! Flippin awesome.

Odd though, that the mortem doesn't record using the angel arm as nuking the level. I wonder if that's intentional.

I was wondering, i heard that donators get the latest beta version of the game. However, I'm wondering how much I'd need to donate in order to qualify, and get it. Any insight?

Plus: this forum is surprisingly stagnant for such a great game. It's a pity, really.

I've decided to nuke Cybie whenever possible, even if it'd be more than possible to kill him normally, just because I think the ending you receive is WAY cooler.

Anyway, this run shows me not just using a shotgun build, but extensive use of the plasma shotgun. A damn fine weapon that I've overlooked for far too long apparently. One often overlooked advantage of it is that it can destroy walls, but doesn't destroy items, making it an EXCELLENT alternative to explosive-based weaponry. Plus, with it's ability to pierce armor and hit multiple enemies, I was taking out GROUPS of archviles and mancubi with relative ease. However, there seems to be some aiming discrepancies with the Plasma Shotgun; when trying to aim manually, you can only aim one square in any direction, and can't specify like you can with other shotguns. While you CAN toggle between enemies, you can't manually aim at all when there's an enemy around, stifling it's usefulness somewhat.

I was also fortunate enough to get an Assault Shotgun, which was incredibly useful as well. Getting two of the three unique shotguns on a shotgun build max carnage run is some mighty fine luck.

I wonder if I get different amounts of points for nuking him than fighting him normally?

It's been awhile since I last played, and I can't remember something.

I know that there's only 25 levels, but I can't remember if it's 15 normal and 10 hell, or 10 normal and 15 hell.

I'm not sure where on the wiki this sort of info would be found, so if someone could answer this question quickly, I'd be very appreciative.

Ammochain may seem overpowered, but it's VERY VERY necessary for Ao100. Fighting the hordes of Archviles and Revenants, especially when 2-3 revenants/barons are being revived at a time, necessitates a constant stream of heavy ordinance, and I think that any other build, even shotguns, would run out of ammo with how many non-ammo dropping monsters show up. Also, ammochain lets you use the rest of your inventory to carry med packs, phase devices, and envirosuits, which coming VERY handy.

I mean, groups of 4-5 mancubi/revenants were very commonplace, and archviles were around every corner in every level, so being crazy prepared was a prerequisite to surviving.

(Yeah, I know it's possible to do Ao100 without ammochain, but it sure doesn't seem like it...)

I like that I still get nukes, and that I can just completely bypass levels if I have invincibility going on. Getting to such high levels was neat, but once you hit a certain point, it's just not that useful to level up, since there isn't anything else that can really help you.

Really though, it got really monotonous at the later levels. It was an exciting, turbulent, unpredictable type of monotony, but it was monotony nonetheless.

What I was worried about most was my supply of armor. I had one really good armor, a agility/bulk/power modded red armor, which was my awesome super red, which I relied on mostly. I also had two other bulk and speed modded red armors to supplement my supply. I used every single armor shard I could find to repair my super red, and it pulled me out of alot of tough situations.

Damn barons though, their acid ball attack drains armor strength like crazy. It shaved off like 25% from my super red with every hit, it was crazy to just get hit once and need to repair it.

The various uniques I picked up weren't really useful. The only one I really used were the phaseshift boots. I carried the Onyx armor and hell staff around with me in case of an emergency, but I never used them.

What I'm very grateful for is that I found an advanced plasma rifle, which, as you can see, I modded quite a bit. I couldn't find any power mods for it though, which was very odd. I find a crapload of advanced combat shotguns, which were always a disappointment since I had no intention of using them.

Though, as the difficulty escalates, you learn to grow out of the habit of "Saving globes for when you really need them". Like, say, if things were easier, and I saw a supercharge, I'd go "I'll save it till the end of the level, when I go down", but when you're on level 80, you see that globe and go "GIMME GIMME GIMME! Even if there's nothing killing me right now, there's bound to be something killing me in a couple seconds!". Serious, that stuff never lasted long.

I had a respectable store of Homing Phase Devices, which I used sparingly and only in emergencies. They got me out of QUITE A FEW tight spots that might have ended in tragedy otherwise. however, in the last few levels, I shot them off one after the other to skip straight to the end, which was, ironically, an arachnotron cave. Arachnotron caves are really hard in normal games, but are actually a step-down in difficulty when a normal Ao100 level entails fighting 4-5+ archviles and 5-7+ revenants.

Jesus Christ, that took awhile, I'm glad I have so much free time.

Also, I wish it gave you a better message than "You were killed by something...". It just doesn't seem appropriate considering the epic accomplishment it entails.

Requests For Features / Change "It" to "Him" in Mortem display.
« on: December 30, 2009, 17:21 »
So I noticed when you kill the cyberdemon by sacrificing youself, aka suicidal Thermie explosion, the game recounts this every mortem by saying "1 sacrificed itself for the greater good" or somesuch. This seems grammatically awkward since the line is supposed to be an extension of "Is he immortal? X souls claimed to have killed him".

Now, I know it's supposed to be referring to the player, and the game can't know the gender of who's playing, but this just seems like a heavy-handed way of dealing with that. I'd appreciate it if the mortem display just went by the gender of the player character, which I'm presuming is male, and just change "It" to "Him".

What do you guys think?

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 18 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 7 of those were killed.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 10 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
5 killed the bastard and survived.
4 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

So, after just becoming a Sergeant Major, I thought I'd try out one of the new challenge modes and just have fun with Ammochain. After gaining a whole new respect for my shotgun, I get ammochain, mod out my new plasma gun, and then go to town on everything.

I had the fortune of finding 2 homing phase devices (items I like to hoard more than any other), I found a Thermie on hell level 8 along with an invulnerability globe right next to the stairs. Destiny was DEMANDING that I kill JC again, a request that I'm happy to oblige.

Needless to say, I take the orb, head down, zip to the next exit with my HPD, and then nuke Cybie.

I then discover that homing phase devices don't work in the phobos arena, but I head down to JC's lair regardless.

Armed with one modded out BFG, and a less impressive second BFG I got from the Mortuary, I wait for JC to summon barons, then fire into the dark, hoping that it'll it one in the crowd. It sure does, and EXPLOSIONS! I rinse and repeat and JC never gets a shot off. I got lucky though, I was nearly out of cells!

THIRD Full Win!

Also, is it just me, or does the BFG work MUCH MUCH better against groups of enemies than it does against solitary ones?

Requests For Features / Combined Challenges!
« on: December 30, 2009, 02:28 »
After completing 3 challenge modes (one with a full win), I got to thinking, you know what would make these really interesting? Combined Challenges.

By that, I mean that there could be an option somewhere in the main menu, and selecting it would allow you to choose 2 different challenges, and then you'd play a game with BOTH challenge's rules enforced.

I think it'd be really fun, and would provide for more interesting Mortems to see from the community. There probably wouldn't be any special badges for combined challenges, but there could probably be a score modifier or something.

What do you guys think?
