Century Lounge / [M|Ao100|99%|YAVP] Oh COME ON!
« on: December 04, 2016, 17:16 »
Hey kids, it's been a while. I've not been playing DoomRL much (high hopes for Jupiter Hell), and... well.
Okay there's one thing that's been bugging me for-fucking-ever. The secret of the Dragonslayer. Anyways, I'm going along, and there's apparently a hint about it if you complete Ao100.
So you know what, why not? That said, it didn't feel as long as I thought it would be... I was getting somewhat bored near the end, but I still wanted to shoot everything. If it moves, it's dead. I don't like leaving things alive. So uh, why isn't it 100%?
About 20 levels or so in there was a lava fort level, only the bridges to one of the rooms didn't spawn. Two demons, far out of my sight, and me lacking the armament to kill them properly. Such a shame. I might have to retry this.
So, some thoughts.
I'm still a chain whore. MAc has yet to do me wrong like ever, so I saw no real reason to change my playstyle now. My plan was fairly simple. Get MAc, get Whizkid, get Badass, work things out from there.
Equipment-wise I didn't really have much of a plan. I found duelist armor, so that became my early armor (I actually found THREE what the hell), and found an energy-shielded vest. Decided to make that into cybernano armor.
I also found acid-proof boots early on, which was nice, but I was fairly set on getting cerberus boots once I had full Whizkid.
Finding Malek's armor was interesting, I decided to make it my backup armor when my Duelist's and backup Red got too banged up, but seven levels later I found the Boots and quickly *didn't need anything else*. Late game, there's some plasma and acid, sure, and the rare bullet, but most of the dangerous late enemies do fire, and ignoring lava was a lovely too. Between that and badass, I pretty much never used a med kit. When I finally assembled the Cybernano armor though... okay, the Power Cybernano Energy-Shielded Vest was neat, but after spending most of the game pretty much immune to about 60% of what I dealt with, it felt like a downgrade. Great armor, great assembly, and I was very lucky throughout. But man, it felt like a letdown after Malek's + Nyarlahotep's. I have no idea why. Fortunately I had my cerb boots.
I'm also annoyed that the gothic boots spawned.... some 20 levels after I ditched the gothic armor. Oh well, the RNG was lovely to me anyways so I'll forgive it.
As I'm going MAc, I naturally want a plasma rifle. I found one, started to the high-powered rifle, then found the laser rifle. After some thought I decided that was better, and ran with it. Eventually, I just decided not to bother with anything else: any other weapon I got after ditching my gatling gun and double shotty was basically something to mess with.
All said... it was mostly grindy really. Early worries yes, but after getting set up (AKA about Badass 2) there were a few tense moments but mostly grindy. Still I think I'll do this again, if only because of the MOTHER FUCKERS WHO GOT AWAY.
So any thoughts?

Post Mortem / [M|AoMr|YAAM|YAFW] How did I manage that?
« on: March 23, 2013, 05:43 »
I would like to start by saying that I made a few mistakes with this run, one which worked out fairly well and the other that... didn't, but worked out by sheer luck. My first was that forgetting that Whizkid was a Basic trait for Technicians (as I usually play Marines) and my second... well, it made for my most epic fight with JC yet.
I chose Technician on the thought that a max damage pistols would be useful, and as my first AoMr run involved a rather unwise choice with Dualgunner and twin high-powered pistols, I wasn't interested in running Dualgunner again.
Prior to this game, I did AoB, and it forced me to understand that sometimes I REALLY SHOULD skip special levels: not doing the Arena was a wrench, but I was able to appreciate the changes to the Court sans Arena. I took that lesson to heart, although not immediately.
The Arena was surprisingly easy: two levels of SoaG make picking off demons easy with double pistols, as long as they started at range. Cacodemons were easier than I thought they would be (the demons were bigger threats), I just kept dodging around pillars to create space when they stopped to shoot at me. The Chained Court was a bit harder, but that was mostly due to the Arena Master being able to soak up a lot of damage. Once I got MSs, I built my high-powered pistol: the ability to oneshot formers and imps was greatly appreciated, and the reliable knockback moreso (especially when I started running into revenants and mancubi).
The Armory was a colossal waste of time, I was loaded down with mods (in anticipation of Whizkid) and the special mod inside was a firestorm, which was singularly useless to me. I could have solved so many problems by realizking Whizkid was a basic trait. Sigh.
I skipped most special stages after the Armory: I had no way to deal with the Containment Area, I didn't want to run through the Halls of Carnage, I decided the Mortuary, Spider's Nest and City of Skulls would be a waste of time, and Unholy Cathedral was naturally right the fuck out.
I hit Whizkid once I reached the Vaults, and in the trait selection screen I realized that it was a basic trait, which had me cursing up a little bit. It worked out though, as I had a .1 s firing time. Kind of neat, although not really worth it. I built the storm bolter and energy pistol--I wanted to try the pistol for wallbusting, and promptly forgot about it once I realized it needed cells--only to find the Trigun. Go figure. Trigun replaced my high-powered pistol, and my nuke because I never found one.
I managed to build the Cerberus boots before hitting the Lava Pits, which made that really easy (i dumped all my enviroment suits, and then realized that the boots came with a movespeed penalty), and found the Lava Armor. Between that and the boots, my armor needs were set, it was a shame it came so late in the game!
So, bosses. Bruiser Brothers were, of course, easy with a max damage high powered pistol. Cyberdemon was fairly tense, but I managed to get the timing of his attacks right for some good dodging. Still knocked me around, though. Mastermind got Angel Arm'd.
JC was the interesting one: all said, it was a straightforward shootout until it ran afoul of my one big habit: I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY hate leaving things alive (this is going to make AoRA a royal bitch if I ever take it up). I want 100% kills. By the time I reached him, he already summoned lost souls (I should have put away the boots!), but I managed to shoot him down to almost dead without much trouble. He teleported, but was still in my line of sight, and he left behind two lost souls. I had a .1s firing time and a full Trigun clip, what could go wrong?
JC can summon revenants is what could go wrong. I ended up being a human ping-pong ball for the majority of the fight: if it weren't for the Lava Armor, I would have died easily. As it was, it gave me enough durability to at least try to pick off revenants from my line of sight. I could take out a revenant in one clip, but reloading was the weak point that let JC and his goons bounce me around some more. Eventually I got lucky and he teleported into my sight again, so I basically said screw it and finished the job. It really surprised me to find that I hit 100%: I was honestly afraid I'd have to unload the Angel Arm again.
All said, one hell of a run, and I think I might run AoMr with Technician again.

Post Mortem / [M|YAAM] The cat came back, the very next day~
« on: March 20, 2013, 20:28 »
As is traditional, when a new version of DoomRL comes out, I go to beat it. Nothing complex, honestly, just go through it to try out the changes. As is traditional, this is on HNTR, and a Mac/shotty build.
My first impressions is that I really *REALLY* love the new special levels (finding out that they were replacements for certain levels like the Wall and Armory made me feel better about doing them. However, I did not like the rework of the Halls of Carnage as much, as I used to see it as a bit of a breather level. Finding out that the megahealths have been replaced and the lava was sped up was a bit of a rude awakening for me.
The new level generation algorithms are appreciated as well, some of the levels seemed more appropriately hellish.
I am something of a mod hoarder: I keep thinking about the stuff I could use those mods on and hold onto them in hopes of building them. Not fun for inventory management, especially since mods seem much more common, not to mention rare mods.
Armor was something of a problem in previous attempts: it seems that it was very easy to lose armor, even when modded. I quickly learned that the most important thing I could do with the onyx mod I kept finding is to slap it on a red armor, that solved a lot of armor issues. You'll notice that I didn't go for the tower shield: I did not want one as the onyx red was just fine for my needs, although I got it a little late and never really put it to use.
Finally, the difficulty curve seems different: the first levels are fairly easy, but once you pass the Bruiser Brothers, things ramp up quickly. A definate challenge, I think.
All said, I am enjoying the new version!

0.9.9.3 / [M|100%|YAAM] Why did I take Ammochain again?
« on: May 02, 2011, 05:30 »
Answer: Because I'm a plasma whore.
So, with 0.9.9.3 out, I decided to start fresh. First an ITYTD! win, then a HNTR win. I wanted to use the time to try out the new assemblies.
And, naturally, the game was all too happy to help me experiment. It was also quite happy to distract me from experimenting: I go into the Armory and find the Jackhammer.
The Jackhammer really is a such a charming piece of overkill.
So my two main weapons (until my shells ran low... I took Ammochain shortly after so that worked out) ended up the Jackhammer for tough enemies, and the tactical shotgun for most other situations. I won't rave about it like Thomas has, but it really is a good weapon: ideal for taking as a secondary with MAc (especially since Shottyman is only a trait away and the tactical shotty reloads in one move. Lovely!)
The hyperblaster is interesting, it's basically an assault rifle, but with plasma. The accuracy bonus is great without EE, but it seems better suited for games without MAc.
As noted, I also assembled the focused double shotgun, but because I had the Jackhammer and tactical shotty, I tossed it away once I built it. Maybe another game? It is as it is described: it seems to have a much more focused cone, and looks like a better longer range weapon. Maybe along the lines of double+combat shotgun? Not really worth it without Shottyman though.
Although, all the mods I carted around in hopes of making the schematics quickly proved to be extremely annoying. I hope not to do that again.
As a personal note, I'm starting to favor MAc/SM, which requires Reloader 2 but doesn't actually use it at all. Amusing. Still, it makes Shotties a very viable secondary weapon to someone taking MAc.
I could have nuked the Cyberdemon, but I decided I wanted his head more, and I'm fairly sure you can't get his head if you nuke it, so I just unloaded BFG into it until it went away and that worked.
Also, I can't believe I forgot the skulls! I'll have to get them another time.
===
Also, why does it list my first win as standard? The game recognizes it as full (which it was). Maybe because it was in IDWTD!?

0.9.9.2 / [U|98%|19|YASD] An experiment. Also: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF--
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:35 »
Following my AoMr and AoB wins, I decided to either try Ao100 or regular UV. After a few Ao100 attempts (none of which got very deep) I decided to try UV.
The shift upward to UV has been a difficult one, but I've slowly gotten the hang of it, with the skills I gained from my Ao successes.
However, I had not won yet. I managed to get ONE marine into hell, although not very far (an Arachnotron killed me as I had not properly estimated if I could last one more round or not. Sad.)
I did notice that if I was VERY thorough (and if you've not paid attention to my previous mortems, I am extremely thorough) about my demonic extermination, I would have quite a lot of experience by the time I reached the Gate. Possibly enough to have Ammochain AND Berserker.
This intrigued me since once I get Ammochain, I generally do not feel l utilize the second slot, and Juggler allows you to make melee attacks with a weapon equipped in your secondary slot. Now, while melee attacks seem to have little interest to someone who can fire a modded plasma rifle endlessly, I liked the option of Berserk on (almost) command, and I was intrigued with the possibility of gaining the Longinus Spear as well as the Angelic Armor.
So I began an experiment: would it be possible to use Ammochain and Longinus effectively without harming myself? Once you get Ammochain, there's really not much to go from there. Another level of Triggerhappy or Son of a Bitch, sure, but generally you want to move on to defensive traits like Ironman and Hellrunner.
(note to self: possible to get MAc and MBm in a UV game? Worthwhile? Must try this.)
The experiment was more or less a success, I managed to get both Ammochain and Berserker, and managed to finish the Cathedral to claim the Spear. Neat. I kept my double chainsaw as a memento, I certainly didn't need it anymore, but when it helps you get one of the best weapons in the game (and you stick three mods in it that should have probably been used in your armor) you get a little attached.
Neat little thing. Honestly, I can say I liked how it turned out, running around berserk is always fun, and I still have the plasma rifle if I need something killed from far away.
Afterward came the Spider's Lair. I very rarely get to see that locale, so I had to visit it, at least once. It posed a little trouble for me (as I was starting to really, really dislike Arachnotrons. I had not previously feared them, but in UV they were posing more trouble than I liked.), although teleporting to the side and waiting while arachnotrons teleported to me amused me a bit and saved some trouble. Not to mention spear-whacking those unfortunate enough to enter CLOSE to me.
Unfortunately, after all this, I became rather reckless again. I entered the Vaults, discovered there was a unique there, and went about finding it. The Viles posed a lot of trouble, but I managed to whittle down the ones on the left, while approching the center vault from an odd angle.
Then I stepped out into what I thought was an okay space and got ANOTHER Revenant Out Of Nowhere (tm).
Seriously. Where the fuck do I find these things?
This one didn't blast me through two walls. It just gibbed me. Sad. I probably should have used one of the large medkits.
Oh well. The sad thing? Well, besides getting plastered by a RooN(tm)? I never found out what that Unique was. At least I got the Arachno Silver Badge.
Notes:
1) The Bulk mod on the Plasma Rifle was a mistake, I meant to stick that on my 6-point red armor (the one with the agility mod) and hit the wrong key.

« on: April 08, 2011, 01:52 »
Things achieved:
Achieved 1st Lieutenant rank.
First AoB success.
First AoB JC kill. (Gotta start the game off right <3)
First AoB 100% game. (How I managed this, I do not know.)
Got the Longinus Spear for the first time.
Destroyed my first Tactical Boots. (Whoops.)
If it's not obvious by now, I don't do this shit half-assed.
Obviously, this run went *insanely well*.
So, thoughts on Angel of Berserk.
1) It is indeed as hard as advertised, I easily had... oh maybe close to 100 false starts and screwups. As mentioned, it's psychotically hard until you get the chainsaw, after which it becomes easier. I think I will do this again!
2) One of the BIG things that Angel of Berserk forced me to do is consider "gift giving". That is probably THE tactical concept that I had the most trouble with. I started trying to keep at least a small medkit with me so I could lure in troublesome sergeants. AoB forced me to understand it and use it, and this will make me a much better player.
Note to self: Ammo isn't worthless as bait, but armor and medkits are not.
3) There are a few things I really regret doing. The first was easily trying to run the Halls of Carnage. This is where my "gotta kill everything" bit me in the ass. I blew through a lot medkits trying to handle the first part. Once I got cleared out the sergeants, it was much easier. The next was trying to run the Lava Pits... although, that is something that got more tolerable as time past, until it was downright easy. See, I didn't have any envirosuits and wasn't berserked, so I blew a lot of medkits trying to stay alive until I got berserk. Then my boots melted. Still, once I reached that point, it was really really easy. Berserk until I got a suit, then it's just another pit run. Still, the resources required and stress means that I'll probably avoid them when I run AoB again.
4) I thought I would regret visiting the City of Skulls and Mortuary. I didn't. The City of Skulls essentially gave me a berserk that would last for the next 3-4 levels. The Mortuary was much the same, fairly easy once berserk kicked in, just chase down the viles and build more berserk off of their buddies.
That said, the run through hell itself was surprisingly easy, although tense at points. Between the spear (and later the armor) and the longest berserk I've ever had, it was considerably less painful than the beginning.
5) Again, I'm surprised JC didn't summon. I couldn't resist going after JC since I had the lava element. A berserk later meant that he went down easily, although it was good to remember the alt fire on the spear. Just in case.
All in all, after so many false starts and so much frustration, it is INCREDIBLY satisfying to have such an epic run. I want to imagine how lucky I have been, but right now I'd rather just exult in the success.
This run replaced my AoMr run as the fourth best (the top three being HMP runs and thus naturally scoring higher). It seems that between all the attempts I've manged to get the melee kill and general kill requirements for Arch-Vile rank. Now I just need to murder 358 more AVs. This should be fun!

0.9.9.2 / [M|AoMR|YAAM] In which a pissed off cat stabs Cybie in the face. WITH BULLETS.
« on: April 05, 2011, 17:35 »
So, after my awesome little run in AoMC, I decided to do an AoMr run. Didn't send me into as much of an adrenaline high.
Things achieved:
First AoMr success.
First AoMr 100% game.
So, thoughts.
1) I never found any of the pistol Exotics or Uniques, but I had not expected to. Instead, I wanted to build a pair of high-powered pistols and run from there. Startscumming for a power mod didn't work, I finally gave up, took the tech mod, and worked with that until I found enough power and bulk mods to build the pistols. I found exactly TWO bulk mods. Irritating. I wish the Armory had shown up.
In retrospect, it was a really stupid idea. The knockback effect I experienced during my AoMC game was much better, as I did not expect to kill with the first shot but the occasional knockbacks were a great help, especially when facing archviles. However, having a pair of pistols I can only fire three times before reloading? That caused more problems than it solved.
Next time, I think I will run one high powered pistol (for knock back), and keep one with just a power mod. Reloading one gun after three shots then dualreloading after three more is better than dualreloading after every three shots. Gun Kata helped, to an extent, although it was hardly reliable considering I had such a harsh limit on my offence.
In any case, it forced me to think a bit more tactically. Particularly in the fight with the Cyberdemon. I went into the fight berserked and with the Lava Element, and naturally the Element's invulnerability wasn't long enough to pump Cybie full of lead. Fortunately, I managed to get to the pillar before he sent me a few rockets, and used that to reload.
TL;DR: dual high-powered pistols? REALLY bad idea.
2) I was going for Eagle Eye in the hopes of Intuition, but there really wasn't enough time to get it. I wish I had gone for Finesse instead, I was curious as to how fast I'd shoot with 3 SoaG and 2 Fin. Something to think about when I play another pistol game.
3) The Mortuary was more or less a lark, I figured I'd have enough ammo, armor, and first aid kits to take it on, and it all worked out. Unlike the last game, I decided to play a far more aggressive game. One AV spawned next to me and died pretty fast, finding the other three were a bit of a pain considering I only really had the center pillars for cover. That and having to shoot through a whole bunch of crap just to get to the bastards. In retrospect, it was not my brightest move, and it was a far tougher fight than my AoMC run. Still, I am exhilarated to have finished it, it impressed me.
Even then, I figured that taking JC on might not be the best of ideas, discretion being the better part of valor and all that. Maybe if I'm better equipped next time.
AoMr took me several attempts, but all in all, an interesting experience. I am starting to feel more confident, and I am debating on moving to UV or trying an AoSg run.

0.9.9.2 / [M|AoMC|YAAM] Aw HELL yeah!
« on: April 03, 2011, 11:03 »
As I have been having an INORDINATE amount of trouble moving on to UV difficulty, I decided to try for a challenge, and figured that my best shot was the Angel of Mass Carnage. I went through several bad attempts. Easily, the most frustrating was getting killed by a commando by accidentally striking the movement key an extra time. The funny part is that I was looking for a plasma rifle.
I sure got it, huh? I should post that mortem. But moving on...
Things achieved:
First challenge success.
First AoMC success.
First challenge JC kill.
First AoMC JC kill.
First challenge 100% game.
First AoMC 100% game.
Second Lieutenant Rank.
So, a few notes on the AoMC experience:
1) Being able to one-shot enemies is incredibly important. I normally go Finesse first, but I found that getting two levels of SoaB (like SoaG, which ended a few runs when I realized I picked the wrong damn trait and I was going for Ammochain). The pistol will oneshot any formers that come up, barring armor. This was very important to my early game. Killing in one shot is better than two fast shots.
2) The plasma rifle, as always, was a beast. I was going for a high powered plasma rifle (power first) which meant I was carting around a bulk mod for the majority of the game. However, I found one slight (if hilarious) problem with said weapon: it now does enough damage to knock back enemies, often out of my line of fire. Funny as hell, but not helpful. I will not use high powered plasma next time, and instead go for tech mods, as the weapon is already powerful enough to kill most enemies outright. I have an EXTREMELY aggressive playstyle, and I HATE being forced to disengage and leave an enemy alone.
3) Proper healing is incredibly important, and I had to be more cautious about my health, which offset the fact that I generally output enough damage to kill most enemies, which only made my aggressive playstyle WORSE. I got low a few times, the one thing that sticks out in my mind was yet ANOTHER Revenant Out Of Nowhere which sent me through two walls and blew up like three napalm barrels. Fortunately, I was close enough to cover to escape, heal, and reengage.
4) At the endgame, I usually go Hellrunner as being able to dodge and move quickly is important to me, especially when engaging/disengaging. Ironman was taken because I figured that with the high chance to be hit, being able to withstand more damage was far more important, and it worked out very well.
5) I had a bit of difficulty with the Mortuary, which I attribute to trying to play defensively. I killed two Arch-Viles, but one of them got a shot in and destroyed the supercharges in the center, so I ran to the left to restock. That allowed the archviles to the right to raise a nasty little army that made me VERY glad I stocked up on cells and modded my BFG. I think I should have went after the archviles right after to stop them from raising corpses. I will keep that in mind next time.
That said, this was an awesome run, and I'm pleasantly surprised to find out that I made Second Lieutenant. This run currently stands as my fourth best, under three HMP successes.
I sure got it, huh? I should post that mortem. But moving on...

--------------------------------------------------------------
You will have to forgive me, this is my first post. I've been playing quite a bit since I found DoomRL.
Recently, I've finished my first HMP game, and I've been practicing on that to move up to UV. Eventually.
In any case, I was having an exceptionally good run. Shotty focused to start since I started with Finesse, then going into ammochain once I got a good rapidfire weapon.
My goal was the assault cannon. You see, I had obtained the assault cannon from my first HMP success, but I had not used it extensively because I was running a Cateye build (note, the Mortuary was pretty damn easy with Int 2) and was more or less focused on using the assault rifle.
The idea would be that I would get lucky and snag a firestorm mod from the Armory. The armory didn't show up. The firestorm mod did.
The Assault Cannon is not a gun. It is an instrument of fully automatic murder.
Funnily enough, I used the modded plasma rifle more, but hell if that thing wasn't fun.
So, of course, since I finished the Arena and Chained Court, I had to pay a visit to the vaults. When I entered, I was notified of a unique. Of course, I didn't think too much of it, I was pretty well set for weaponry, the only thing I really wanted was a Nano Pack for Power Armor.
"Oh, but you should be interested," the RNG said to me. And then it sent angels down to hand me... the BFG10K. Who said the RNG doesn't love me?
So, that is now my new primary weapon, and I get to run around with it in joyful glee, cackling madly as I proceed to RUIN the shit out of everything that got in my way. My last victory was, sadly, not 100%. After all, I had gotten lucky with invulnerability and had chosen to nuke the Cyberdemon. What better way to celebrate my first victory at that level? Unfortunately, his boss summoned a few too many minions to achieve 100%. How irritating.
As such, I was resolute in making sure EVERY LAST demonic beastie had turned into a vague reddish smear, and focused myself upon this task.
"Ah, but what makes you think I liked you?" the RNG coyly asked, "Besides, in your glee to slaughter everything in your path, you had forgotten an important detail."
And then I got a Revenant rocket from out of nowhere, and I had a sad.
So, notes to self:
1) Even when you think you're doing awesome, be cautious and radar shoot if you are under doubt.
2) There is no excuse for not being fully healed. Ever. ESPECIALLY when you're dicking with revenants and mancubi.
3) The Assault Cannon is an instrument of fully automatic murder and I must treat it as such. By firing it with full chainfire upon anything that so much as twitches or looks like it might look at me in a vaguely funny way sometime in the future.
