Title: Deathwatch OOC
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 04, 2011, 08:04
Who would be up for some space marine action?  I'm willing to GM, but I am limited to running premade missions until I am more confident in my GMing ability.

Edit: Although the game has started, I can accept more players between missions.

Name the system, and the setting, and I'll see if I can get involved.

=D

The system is percentile based.  It's the same system that Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader use.  The setting is the Warhammer 40k universe.

Deathwatch... Well, I would love to play Dark Heresy, but I have no books for Deathwatch available, so it would be slightly harder for me.

I have a PDF I can give you if you want.

I don't mind getting into this.  The last PBF died a mysterious death anyway...

(I can only handle one PBF at a time, so let's try this one out.  =P )

PS: PM me a link on how to get the rulebook.

Post by: Gargulec on February 04, 2011, 09:46
I wonder if DH style characters can be mixed with marines- I would love to play as lone human among the Angeles of Death... And yep, I do not really care about power disparity.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 04, 2011, 09:48
A starting marine is equivalent to a 13000 exp DH character if you really want to do it.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 04, 2011, 09:51
Certainly. A badass Black Priest (Or priestess) of Maccabeus Qunitus with no fear and a large evisecrator is preferable to marines!

If you can PM me a rulebook I think I can act in this one.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 04, 2011, 12:10
Book download links sent.

For Gargulec's case, should I do the availability=requisition thing from the book for equipment or try to convert between requisition and thrones?  Also, I'm assuming you're using Ascension, do ascended careers have different starting gear or should I give you a requisition amount to "buy" standard-issue gear?
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 04, 2011, 12:12
Nah, I do not want to use ascension, for I have only core DH and Inquisitor Handbook. I would just want the 13000XP to spend on a pristine character.

(Though I may take a look at ascension, TBH)

And just give me some thrones, I will buy myself everything I need. :P
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 04, 2011, 12:29
Alright, after a little thinking and liking this idea less and less, I've got 2 ideas for gear.  Either you get tons of thrones and are limited to what you can carry to a mission, or you get to buy gear on a per mission basis like the marines have to.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 04, 2011, 12:32
If I may: I envision my character as personal envoy of an Inquisitor, if not an Inquisitor in training him/herself, so I would rather have my own gear.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 04, 2011, 13:04
Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant with the tons of thrones idea.  How much do you think would be appropriate?

Bonus question: generating statistics: how?
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 04, 2011, 14:04
Just do it the standard DH way.  It's slightly different in Deathwatch but you aren't playing a space marine so...

a) Inquisitor in training
or
b) Inquisitor freshly after training?

If Deathwatch has a book, send me a link, as I only have the Dark Heresy Rulebook.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch

I'm thinking you'd need to be a full blown inquisitor to do missions with the Deathwatch.

Looks good so far.  Keep in mind that I only ran one DH session and that consisted of starting characters derailing the plot at every turn, so I don't know what half of these talents and traits are, or the entire SoB faith system for that matter.

ZZ, Xander, how are your characters coming along?  Also, Kashi, you get one reroll for stats.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Xander Morhaime on February 11, 2011, 12:14
I'd been looking over the rulebook, mostly, but I can start work as soon as I've got ruling on one small issue...

What about chapters not covered by the core rulebook? Say, Scythes of the Emperor (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Scythes_of_the_Emperor)?
Also, do you use IRC and the Chaosforge channel? It's usually useful for GMs and players to get in touch quickly...
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 11, 2011, 12:31
I'm not sure if I can access the IRC from school, but I'll try to start going on it after school and on weekends.  Rites of Battle lets you make custom chapters and I have scans of the chapter creation section, but it's rather limited, but that could be due to the fact that I was trying to make the traitor legions and the Angry Marines. :p
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Xander Morhaime on February 11, 2011, 12:39
Well, that's always something... Scythes are more of a Codex-friendly chapter (if a bit low on numbers).

Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 14, 2011, 05:42
Alright, sorry to hear about that, thelaptop.

Gargulec, looking good, just a couple of things.  The Deathwatch will have you covered for standard ammo.  Also, any ideas as to how an Ordo Malleus inquisitor came to work with an Ordo Xenos organization of space marines?  Lastly, this is going to be extremely combat-heavy.  The average Space Marine has 40 T, unnat toughness x2, 20 wounds, 8 armor (10 on the torso) and the inability to bleed out.  Things are going to be a bit harder for you.

Edit:  Unless Ascension or errata says otherwise (haven't had a chance to look at it yet), you can only sanctify primitive or chain weapons.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 14, 2011, 08:33
First: Blood of the Marty specifies that any melee weapon of Good or higher quality may be sanctified. And since there are already sanctified weapons in cannon (deamonhammer)...

Second: The distinctions between Holy Ordos are very loose, and based more on personal interest- Inquisitor of any Ordo has the right to investigate in case of any kind of threat. And given the fact that Pistis Sophia has been elevated to the rank of an Inquisitor only recently, it is even more likely that she will be still unsure to which of the Ordos she wants to belong. She identifies herself as one of the Daemonhunters only because it was the Threat Beyond she has pursued until now.

And I know that it is going to be harder for me... but, on the other hand, Sophia is really, really competent in the hand-to-hand combat, and power sword pretty much negates the armor advantage.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 14, 2011, 09:17
Okay, I will give you that you have the max possible starting WS of a Blood Angel or Black Templar...

My last concern is Squad Mode and Solo Mode abilities.  I'm thinking either give you the codex ones, but reducing cohesion, or just ignoring them completely.  When I did this in person, nobody remembers to use them and they did just fine...until they got shredded by genestealers in Final Sanction.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 14, 2011, 09:21
I would like to also note that this WS should be counted as 65 because of the best quality weapon I have, and I can boost it by further 10 when frenzied :P.

Plus, I have a few of the most powerful combat talents that exist.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 14, 2011, 09:47
We've almost got our battle-brothers (and sister!) ready, ZZ told me he needs a few more days.

One last thing, anyone have any preference for a first mission?  I'm thinking of starting with either Final Sanction/Oblivion's edge (You've been called in to assist an inquisitor in purging a genestealer infestation, and it only gets worse from there) or Extraction (Rescue an AdMech VIP carrying an important datacore.  The moon he is on is about to be overrun by Tyranids)
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 14, 2011, 09:52
I have read Extraction, so it might not be the best idea... sorry.

Also, a question: who is going to become a squad leader? I've read something on squad abilities, and it would appear that my character has all the hallmarks of a good leader...
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 14, 2011, 09:57
Final Sanction/Oblivion's Edge it is!
I was also thinking about the whole squad leader thing.  You have the highest Fel and command +20, but unless we can adapt the oaths, that may be a problem.  There's also the fact that Marines would probably have reservations about a non-marine leader.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 14, 2011, 10:00
But after all, Deathwatch is the Chamber Militant of Ordo Xenos, they should be used to working with Inquisition before. (As for other awesome things I have for command, do not forget the Heroic Leadership paragon talent, which basically means that I have Into the Jaws of Hell, Air of Authority and Master Orator talents)
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 14, 2011, 11:08
I think Deathwatch marines are used to the inquisitor having a less direct role, but it should be fine.  As for oath-taking I'm thinking either take oaths as a tactical marine or pick a couple of oaths that would be most appropriate for a SoB.
Title: Re: Interest Check: Deathwatch
Post by: Gargulec on February 14, 2011, 11:21
Oh, oh no SoB oaths. Pistis may hail from their ranks, but she harbours no love for them at all. So Tactical ones.

Title: Re: Deathwatch OOC

Since some people were bugging me...

/me throws a krak grenade at Gargulec

... I'm here to ask if there is room for one more. If yes, then I should make a character rather swiftly (Notes: I'd like access to Rites of Battle stuff - at very minimum the extended rules for Power Armor versions/history, because I find these amusing ;) Can provide full pdf for that if you haven't got one yet. Also fair warning - it might happen that after end of this month I'll get banished to land with limited net access... again. If that would happen my posts might slow down to once a two-three days most likely :/)
Title: Re: Deathwatch OOC

Title: Re: Deathwatch OOC

Of the Tactical Space Marine, bedrock of his Chapter and paragon to his brothers, I shall tell thee.

He shall be steeped in the lore of battle and schooled in all manner of weapon and strategy. With combat blade, boltgun and grenade he shall assail the foe. But these are mere tools: a Tactical Space Marine's true weapons are his courage, his wits and his dedication to his brothers.

He will bring his foe to battle in a manner and time of his choosing, never caught himself unready or ill-prepared for the task at hand. In defence he shall be as stalwart as the mountain, a bulwark stood firm against the enemies of Man. In attack he shall strike with the wrath of the Immortal Emperor, felling the foe without mercy, remorse or fear.

From teachings of Roboute Guiliman as laid down in the Apocrypha of Skaros

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So yeah, I've made a Tactical Marine. I think I haven't forgot anything important. Since I'm not sure how are you going to introduce late comers I'm going to state my gear requisitions here:
- One magazine of Hellfire Bolter Shells (free due to being a Tactical Marine)
- One magazine of Metal Storm Bolter Shells (15 requisition)
- One incedinary grenade (15 requisition)

...
...
...

Damn it Guiliman, that's some description to live up to...
Title: Re: Deathwatch OOC
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 19, 2011, 13:25
Any nades beyond 3 frag and 3 krak are excessive, also Kraken has been errata'd to cost 15.
Title: Re: Deathwatch OOC
Post by: Xander Morhaime on February 19, 2011, 13:56
So no extra grenades, but between the heavy flamer, bolter, and pack of Kraken magazines I should have neatly spent all the assigned requisition.

Or was the 3 mags rule only for standard ammo? Either way I'm keeping the Kraken bolter shells.
Title: Re: Deathwatch OOC
Post by: Xander Morhaime on February 19, 2011, 14:09
On second thought... maybe scrap the regular bolter and use the extra req to get a supply of kraken rounds for the heavy bolter.
Title: Re: Deathwatch OOC
Post by: Kamikaze14 on February 19, 2011, 14:31
Yeah, 3 clips is standard ammo only.  For +5 you can get a 60 round HB clip, for +15 you can get a whole backpack.

Yeah, 3 clips is standard ammo only.  For +5 you can get a 60 round HB clip, for +15 you can get a whole backpack.

If that's the case, I'll just toss out the whole selection and take a box of hellfire HB rounds instead for my whole budget.

Consacrators chapter (rules in Rites of Battle, successor chapter of Dark Angels) have one of their gear master crafted. Drawback is that Mark 6 Power Armor is the highest I can have on start AND that master crafted item counts as a relic (so I will be shunned and all if I loose/destroy it)

I think we must have had something stuck to the fronts of our helmets.

Oh thank god, I was starting to think I'd have to make you all burn a fate point...

Hey Kashi, you still there?

Also sorry about the slowness, been pretty busy lately.

On a semi-related note I came up for an idea for Gargulec's character to get more gear between missions.  Your influence goes up by however much renown the rest of the team gets and you can make a number of acquisition rolls before each mission equal to the mission's requisition/10.

Also, everyone still alive?

I am here but frankly the game looks quite dead from here...

I'm pretty sure we lost Kashi, Gargulec's around but hasn't posted here.  I'm personally waiting on Gargulec.  If we have to, I can have Kashi land conveniently off-target and have him rejoin you if he shows up again.  I found out yesterday that this mission is doable with 3.

Oh good, so the fleshy unarmoured one is expendable...

Oh whoops, forgot you were there since you didn't reply as quickly, but yeah, pretty much although I doubt the inquisition would be happy.

One inquisitor for the fate of a planet, that's a pretty fair trade.

Might I recommend correcting it to be four grav chutes, though? Drawing lots when the craft is going down hardly seems fitting for Space Marines, much less Deathwatch, and as you said yourself, Kashi can be carried off-target during the drop if he gets a chute as well.

And we can have the psyker or the tactical carry the squishy one...

Alright, since somebody has to do it - I withdraw my interest from this game. Nothing personal, but I don't see this session going anywhere, sorry.

Yes, I'm afraid it's got less chance of pulling through than our Thunderhawk.

Count me out as well, sorry.
