Title: Status Update : November 2015
Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on November 30, 2015, 10:14
Status Update November 2015: We got a bit stuck on the animation engine overhaul, but in the meantime we present some of the basic weaponry - concept on top, rendered model on bottom. Present are the basic pistol, the shotgun and assault rifle.

As usual comments and queries welcome :).

WHERE'S THE CHAINSAW?

=P

That said, are these the models used for the itty-bitty in-game size when DoomGuy (short of a better name for the protagonist) wields said weapon to thwack at things?

I didn't notice this topic was in the locked part of the forum!

DoomGuy (short of a better name for the protagonist)

More like JupiterGuy, or HellGuy, I'd say. But there is a distinct lack of melee weapons there, indeed.

Don't worry, I cannot imagine the game leaving Alpha without a chainsaw.

JoveGuy.  I'm calling 'im that from now on.  Join me if you want?

I don't know...  I like the ancient Roman influence of the name Joveguy, but it doesn't roll off the tongue as well as Doomguy.  Maybe a new nickname will develop naturally as we learn more about the game.  :)

Also, I have a question, (since it came up before about DoomRL) will there be female playable characters in Jupiter Hell?

Under the plated armour, you can be anyone you want to be.  I think the primary issue we had earlier in DoomRL was that the verb "to be" was hard coded to the extent that it was unsuitable/breaks the illusion of choice for using a female character.  Maybe if that is looked into and supported code-wise (with the whole i18n stuff which I'm sure Kornel is working on, right?) it would be easy to support this.

And yes, i18n is important.  I think there was a group trying to do a russian translation of DoomRL and were faced with major roadblocks and what-not since that was never taken into account.

You mean like DoomGirl?

(at last I have a reason to post this image xP)

On a more serious note - probably so, although in a later stage of development. The visual differences will be a lot more subtle than the above image though :P

Haha, no gratuitous butt-shots, then?  :P  I guess I can get behind that.  ;)

(I'm embarrassed to admit that that's the best joke I could come up with)  :P

Anyway, I figured it would be best to ask while we're still earlyish in development.  I'm eager to see what you come up with, even if it's subtle.  :)

One extra cannister slot along the tool-belt for the stuff needed when the lady is on her period?  That's pretty damn subtle, if you ask me...

Okay, time for me to go back into lurking.  My fun quota has been hit.  =(

-50% health and constant berserk each 7th level, I'd say.

Sure, and the male characters have less accuracy because they're distracted by thinking about sex six times a minute.  :)

Seriously, though, it makes sense from a logical standpoint for the visual differences between the genders to be subtle.  I read somewhere that research into real-life combat shows that, to be blunt, boobs get in the way.  The most effective armour for women flatten the breasts and they've got some impressive military-grade binders that can completely flatten D-cups.  (Seriously!)  So armour that emphasizes the breasts like in the above Doomgirl pic is actually rather impractical.

Anyway, I mostly wanted to speak up for the women on this site (who are mostly absent just like everyone else) who play this game and who I know would want some representation.

We could actually get away with such an armor in our Doom-inspired game. You know why? Because it is even more impractical for the male marine to expose the most deadly place -- the belly :P

As one of those few women, I wholeheartedly second this. I mean, just look up modern female combat gear, it's pretty much the same as the male versions. In video games, Dark Souls has some really good examples of how to do armour for women. Captain Phasma from the latest Star Wars film is another example of how to do female armour well. If Jupiter Hell had stuff like that, that would be awesome!

Do females like the film, "Starship Troopers" . . . people that choose to be soldiers are all the same and treated equally.

The first thing I think of when I see that shotgun art is a drum-less Pancor Jackhammer...
