Title: [VIDEO] DoomRL Tutorials (pre 0.9.9.6)
Post by: Game Hunter on June 08, 2011, 23:01
Welcome to my series of DoomRL videos in which I explain many, many, many things. Despite being a simple game, DoomRL has a vast collection of small details: all of them are important and just by knowing them you can improve your game. However, I understand well that it takes forever to get good at this game, which is why I'm not going to just explain things, I will do them myself. In these tutorial videos, I'll be playing the game in a number of ways for the sake of everyone learning what I do right and what I do wrong.

I will TRY to post about once a week. Given the way this first video came out, they will probably be long videos, so at least it's a good amount of content for being at that rate. We'll see how things go.

This is the OP so it's mostly an index. Whenever I post a new video, it'll be here instead of in the latest post. If, on the other hand, you have questions/comments/etc., definitely post here and I will reply to the best of my ability.

For those of you planning to watch the whole thing, I've created a playlist (http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4C1EFA2D2CEC1FBA). If you're just looking for a specific level, see the (spoiler'd) index below:

Kudos to Game Hunter for sharing his DoomRL wisdom with the rest of us.

That said, folks who have questions/comments on particular parts of the tutorials should state the referenced tutorial number/video part in the post in this thread so that everyone can see where the question is coming from.

Nice, it looks like you got the game sound and voice to co-exist. Bravo on the thorough explanation, even though I know all that stuff I don't think I'd be able to even do half the job you've done conveying it.

The only constructive criticism I can come up with is I don't recall whether or not you went over always coming at the stairs from the north, due to the shotgun angle issues, but I did notice you never came at the stairs from the south. Granted I'm a very negative person, so the fact this is the only thing I can come up is actually a pretty solid endorsement from me. Aren't I pleasant? :)

It figures that I forgot to mention it in this recording. I had to re-record a few times on account of vocal flubs, mis-recording, and some other complications. Annotations have been added at 8:54 in the first video in order to mention it, although for the purposes of this video it's not QUITE important enough to go into detail. When I hit up Hell's Arena, there will be more than enough corner-shooting to go around for the details to become significant. Thanks for the catch, though, I doubt I would have noticed it.

Not bad man.

I really just hate the concept of gift dropping on principle, but seeing it in action forces me to grudgingly accept its utility.

New video's up.

This time we explore the beginning after the beginning: the first random floors after the Phobos Base Entry. Questions and comments are welcome and wanted as always.

Nice stuff. You reminded me running exists and gave me a good idea of when to use it. Saved my ass a few times now.

Added a quick video to help those who are confused with customizing DoomRL via the configuration files.

Yeah, if you're in a tight spot and can afford the accuracy loss (ie, using shotguns) then running is a great way to survive. Sometimes you might even use med-packs and save healing globes for the purpose of running again.

New video's up.

This week's tutorial places us in the most important special floor: Hell's Arena. It is here that you will learn the proper technique, and it is here that many players will become accustomed to completing levels without error. (Not that I do that in any of these, but you'll get the point.)

Awesome videos. Even though I don't always learn anything new, I find that I play a lot more carefully after watching them, so big thanks.

Also, that UV AoMr arena run was hilarious:

New video's up.

Chained Court can be explained very easily. "Lots of zerk, use it to kill everything." In fact, this works for nearly every approach one takes to it, either by the easy or hard layouts. Still, the Arena Master can be unwilling on Ultra-violence, and so it is necessary to learn what to do against it there.

Game Hunter: Maybe I haven't told you how awesome these videos are.  If I haven't, shame on me!

Also, this thread really deserves to be sticky'd.

New video's up.

This week we take a look at The Wall, a very plain but very stressful special floor that can easily wipe you out if you go into it unprepared. Fortunately, there is some strategy that can almost completely flip this viewpoint. (Still gotta hate those Viles on UV though.)

Awesome videos, as always. I can't wait to see you fight shambler. Do you have a reliable strategy to deal with him? For some reason I always have trouble killing him.

Your wall strategy is a little risky and I think it relies too heavily on the tactical armor/boots combo. I used to do it your way, but I lost quite a few guys when an explosion knocked me to the left (which is pretty much an insta-death on higher difficulties).

Maybe I'm just impatient (or I suck :P), but I've found that an alternative strategy works better for me (especially if my speed sucks *cough*AoHu*cough*).

We need more artists for the DoomRL Comic thread.

Incidentally even when playing sloppy, the alternative strategy still held well.  I'm still wondering why I kept on attacking the wall via the north side...

I should probably mention that this panel is from Hyperbole and a Half (http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/06/this-is-why-ill-never-be-adult.html) - I only changed the text ;)

I took a look at the alternative strategy and yeah, it's definitely better in terms of avoiding death. On UV it may end up taking a lot of extra ammo (especially with rapid-fire), but it's certainly safer. I will try to make an extra video showing up this tutorial and accredit the two of you for independently discovering it for yourselves.

Note that the usefulness of attacking the center directly (albeit carefully) may become less effective once we see AI changes following the next version's release. Obviously I'll be making videos regarding changes in strategy if any issues do, in fact, arise.

EDIT: New video's up. This week is a look into Hell's Armory, a quaint little lava-side village populated by hellish monsters and loads of gear. The tenant won't be happy if you try to wake him up! (It's a pretty easy floor though.)

Copied-and-pasted from my video comment.

I've got another shotgun strategy, but it's only valid in the beta and probably the next version. Double shotgun (focused or super shotty if possible) with a shell box for dramatically reduced reload time. Wait in the northeastern-most room, in the south middle tile, with the door closed. When he eventually does teleport in, you will have to take at most 1 step to be in melee range (less damage and not plasma) and have a wall preventing knockback. From that range, you only need a few shots.

I won't be able to get a new tutorial video out today, but I WILL try to do something, so look for a video nonetheless. Expect the tutorial sometime Friday.

EDIT: New videos are up.

This week is a lesson in TWO different floors: Halls of Carnage and Phobos Hellgate. Neither are particularly challenging, so they both go by pretty quickly, but that doesn't mean you can't learn anything from them.

New video's up.

Finally reaching Phobos Hell, this week is a peek at the Unholy Cathedral. Pretty sweet level with a sweet layout and sweet music and a super sweet reward, but it's pretty much impossible unless you know what to expect. All the more reason to watch these tutorials, I guess!

New video's up (or rather, it was ~12 hours ago, but I feel asleep but posting here). This week, we take a look at the City of Skulls, filled to the BRIM with those skull-like enemies: Lost Souls. Plenty of spawners for those souls, too, and even a spawner for the spawners!

Yo dawg, I heard you like spawners so we put spawners in your spawner so you can spawn enemies while spawning enemies.

New video's up.

This week we look at Spider's Lair. It is a lair full of spiders. GODDAMN SPIDERS. (It's not a very difficult level if you specially prepare for it though.)

EDIT: New video again!

Today is a look inside the Vaults. Nasty group of rooms they are! Also, apparently I'm not as good at this game as people would think.

In case you didn't notice it at the end, I will be posting tutorials EVERY DAY until I finish up all the special floors, save the Hell Fortress. That means new tutorials all weekend long!

Bump for mortuary vid in the first post.

And a note on killing arch-viles with the bfg: Game Hunter takes 4 shots to kill the arch-vile with the bfg. That seems like way to much! The bfg has 45 average damage! Well, this is a result of impact knockback (which is considered a bug - won't be fixed in 994). To avoid this bug, target the bfg next to the arch-vile instead. They will take full damage and go down in 2.

For those of you who were looking forward to the final tutorial last night, I apologize that I did not put it up. It'll be added by tonight, at which point I'll make a YouTube playlist for the entire tutorial set. (EDIT: Here's the playlist. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tazYIRH5ko&list=PL4C1EFA2D2CEC1FBA&index=1) Hopefully that link works without issues!)

After that, however, the only video idea I'm considering right now is to demonstrate a .994 Conqueror run (obviously once it's publicly released) in order to explain changes here-and-there that make the game easier or harder for a particular level (I'm gonna guess it'll be a little harder on average). If anyone has ideas for videos for me to do, stuff like badges, medals, old-fashioned runs (although even I have my limits for reasonable challenges) post here and I will take any suggestions into consideration.

I'm going to be reviving this thread by creating updated tutorials for 0.9.9.6. This will include not only revised tutorials for the existing videos, but a number of other videos detailing other parts of the game that require some explanation. If you have anything in particular you want to see in this format, just reply here and I will try my best to incorporate it.

Things I expect to have completed when the tutorial series is finished:

Things I don't expect or want to do for this are as follows:
I'm willing to consider everything else right now, although I'm reserving myself the privilege to add to the exclusion list if necessary.

In addition, if a video comes out and you think I missed something important, lemme know and I'll try to fix it up, either through annotation corrections or a video addendum.

EDIT: Specifically, since there's no particular order I need to do these in, let me know what you'd like to see ASAP and I can prioritize them.

I think that if you are still doing this, it should be in a new thread.  I'm going to seal this as the older version instead to avoid confusion.
